Helping you plan and implement strategies to prepare for your transition into civilian life. In this episode of the Transition Drill Podcast, Michael Smiley shares his extraordinary journey from a small-town upbringing on California's Central Coast to a distinguished career as a first responder and police officer. He candidly reflects on his entry into public safety, starting as a paramedic and firefighter before transitioning into law enforcement, where he served for over two decades, including as a member of a multi-agency SWAT team. Smiley recounts the harrowing 2020 incident in which he was shot during a SWAT operation, the challenges of recovery, and the unexpected struggles with his agency that led to his forced retirement. He dives into the personal and professional toll of leaving a career that defined his identity and shares how he rebuilt his life through advocacy, founding the nonprofit Behind the Public Safety Development Group to support first responders . Today, Smiley combines his lived experiences with his passion for service, empowering others to overcome adversity and find purpose in life after service. Steve Stamp lays out his journey of Kurupt FM's humble webisode beginnings to being picked by the BBC for 5 series. He details how he approached the writing, being scared when he had to actually act, and how it felt collecting his BAFTA. He also covers working on the excellent The Curse with comedy powerhouse Tom Davis and 'sweetheart' Michael Smiley, and which actor would shout at the floor to get into the right frame of mind. And then his other baby, Peacock, and it's inception and development of story and characters from season 1 to the recently released season 2. This week we are discussing The Lobster! From the delightfully demented mind of Yorgos Lanthimos, this black comedy follows a new bachelor who has 45 days to find a romantic partner, else he will be turned into a lobster. Starring Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Jessica Barden, Olivia Colman, Ashley Jensen, Ariane Labed, Angeliki Papoulia, John C. Reilly, Léa Seydoux, Michael Smiley, and Ben Whishaw, this film examines the social laws we create for ourselves and their consequences in our search for love in the world... Ben Wheatley's films are back in the hot seat (third time this year!) as two of our usual three hosts sit down and draw some comparisons to last episode's Midsommar and folk/weird horror in general. next ep: John Hyams' Alone

I honestly don't know what's wrong with Rich Wilson. By which I mean that he is a joyous artist and, having fallen prey to the trope of the "tortured artist" so many times in my life, I find his persistent good cheer hard to understand. I also feel an incredibly deep kinship with this man on the other side of the ocean who I think I've actually only hung out with in person twice. Rich's podcast, Insane in the Men Brain is brilliant enough that I consider it canon for my own podcast, by which I mean that I intend to rip it off as mercilessly as possible. As soon as I broke down and finally decided to do this silly thing, I knew I had to get Rich on as one of my first guests. Rich Wilson is a multi award winning comedian and podcast host. For the first 10 years of his comedy career, Rich cut his comedic teeth at all of the UK's major comedy clubs and has remained a steadfast presence on the British comedy circuit ever since. This has taken him around the world, culminating in multi award winning, sell out shows at the biggest comedy festivals such as Melbourne, Perth and New Zealand. In 2017 Rich won “Best International Act” at the New Zealand Comedy Festival and was nominated for the same award the following year. In 2019 he won another comedy award for “Best show of the Festival” with Just Be Botanicals at the Edinburgh Fringe festival. Rich Wilson is a multi award winning comedian and podcast host of Insane In The Men Brain and Insane In The Fem Brain where he talks to funny and interesting people about their experiences with mental health featuring interviews with Heston Blumenthal, Felicity Hayward, Nicholas Pinnock, Michael Smiley, Jessica Fostekew, Scroobius Pip and many more. He has earned himself an award for “Best Podcast” with JOE and gained a nomination for “Best Social Conscience Podcast” at the Podbible Poll Winners Awards. Rich is also an indemand podcast guest and has been featured on: BBC Radio 4's You'll Do, Global Radio's Job's A Goodun, Scroobius Pip's Distraction Pieces and Dave's Conversations Against Living Miserably.

I'm back with another review, this time of the 'West Walian Western' The Toll. On the Pembrokeshire border, a man (Smiley) working solo shifts in the quietest toll booth in Wales, hides from a criminal past where nobody would ever look. As his past actions catch up with him and his peace is shattered, he enlists the help of local ne'er-do-wells and oddballs, including a female Elvis impersonator, rampaging triplets and disgruntled sheep farmers, while village police officer Catrin (Elwy) grows increasingly suspicious… With an all-star cast of British talent, The Toll is a deliciously dark journey into the wild west of Wales from debut director Ryan Andrew Hooper. The Toll stars Michael Smiley, Iwan Rheon, Paul Kaye, Annes Elwy, Steve Oram (Sightseers) and Julian Glover (The Empire Strikes Back, For Your Eyes Only).

The best (and only) character actor podcast in the world returns! For their first episode back Andrew and Stephen head north to talk the career of Michael Smiley. A Northern Irishman, Smiley got his start as the rave-obsessed bike courier Tyres O'Flaherty in Edgar Wright's sitcom Spaced. His first major supporting film role came in 2008's Outpost. From there he began a series of collaborations with Ben Wheatley including Down Terrace, Kill List, A Field in England and Free Fire. Well known for his musical accent, cutting line deliveries and glowering menace, Smiley has put all three to use in the thrillers Black Sea and Come to Daddy, the Irish folk horror The Hallow and the RTÉ TV comedy Dead Still. He is set to appear in Censor and Gunpowder Milkshake later this year.
