Encore: What Does it Mean to be Childless in a Child-Centered Society?

In our premiere episode, we will discuss the experience of being involuntarily childless in a pronatalist world, through personal experiences, and the need for change. Our guest for this episode is Hilary Fennell.   Hilary is an award-winning programme maker and journalist with extensive experience of working in television and radio as a series producer and director.  In her ground-breaking radio documentary, Childless, Hilary Fennell explores the realities and dynamics of being involuntarily childless in a child-centered society.   Her voice as a childless not by choice woman, is interwoven with the stories of six other women. Each of the women speak to their diverse journeys in coming to terms with living a life without children.   Currently, it is estimated that one in five women in Ireland will not have a child, by the time they reach age 45. It is further estimated that only 10% of these women are childless by choice (child free). Childless, focuses on the other 90% of women, who represent an often less represented group.    This group is often silenced by the taboo nature of this topic, which remains today, despite the number of women living without children, not by choice. Further, these statistics do not include other genders. A majority of countries primarily track the parental status of women only.   Societies have become obsessed with motherhood and the idealization of human reproduction, supported by pronatalist rhetoric, which is reinforced through policy, in the workplace and socially.   Hilary navigates the social, physical and emotional impact of childlessness throughout her documentary, with skillful artistry and a full heart, amidst the shadows of grief, a call for social change, and the lightness of learning to live a full and meaningful life.   Please join us to learn more about her incredible radio documentary, and the issues that matter most to those who are living without children, involuntarily.     Hilary Fennell is an award-winning programme maker and journalist with extensive experience of working in television and radio as a series producer and director. Her work runs the gamut from current affairs to arts and human interest and has been in competition at many festivals worldwide. Hilary has worked in both the Irish State Broadcaster RTÉ and the independent sector. As a journalist, she been interviewing and writing for various national media for over twenty years.  She is also a recognised fiction writer, recent prizes include The Sean O'Faolain Short Story Competition.  Hilary also lectures in Broadcast Production at the National Film School at IADT and does presenting and voiceover work.  She originally graduated from Trinity College Dublin with an honours law degree (LL.B, Bachelor in Laws) and qualified as a barrister from The Kings Inns Dublin (BL, Barrister-at-Law). The Australian Government has introduced new legislation which would put a social media ban in place for those under 16 years of age. The legislation would give the likes of X, Facebook and Instagram a year to put in place methods to restrict younger users – is this the correct solution to the harms of social media? And should Ireland follow suit?Joining Kieran to discuss is Broadcaster, Wendy Grace and Cyberpsychology Lecturer in IADT, Nicola Fox Hamilton.

Threadsuns - Sophie BéhalThreadsuns, a new body of work from Sophie Béhal, comes as the result of the Tipperary Artist Residency Award with STAC, supported by Tipperary Arts Office. This body of work comes from a period of engagement with new materials in a new place. Situated in a rural landscape in County Tipperary, it searches for a new way of being in this world and uses repetition, ritual and process to investigate this. The sun and circles are used as a rhythmic refrain and repeated throughout. The most reassuring of shapes, the circle, and its transcendental properties associated with infinity and certainty are questioned. The turmeric-dyed cotton sunprints hanging throughout the gallery will act as a balm in a dark winter, but like the shifting cycles of the sun, they will not last. Created by sunlight, they are a measure of light and time and space. In the gallery the weak winter light will cause them to fade and change over the duration of the exhibition, and as spring arrives they will leave. This exhibition is the result of a sustained period of research, experimentation and learning for the artist in new sculptural materials : glass, slip cast ceramics, large-scale natural dyeing and printing, and welded steel. The different timescales of these materials and their sometimes contradictory properties of heaviness and lightness, movement and stillness, permanency and ephemerality are explored. This exhibition offers the viewer moments of hope and transformation whilst acknowledging the darkness of our time. It reflects on a human need for ritual, repetition and communication and strives to find these things in our everyday life.Sophie Béhal is a visual artist, from Kilkenny and living in Co. Tipperary. Her work usually manifests itself as sculptural installation, often combining traditional sculptural materials of steel, clay and plaster with more ephemeral aspects of light and sound. Recent exhibitions: Awards Show, 2023, MART Dublin, With a View, Chocolate Factory, Dublin 2022, Dublin Art Book Fair, TBG+S, 2022 +2021; Projects: The Postal Project,Carlow Arts Festival 2021, Firestation Artists Sculpture Awardee 2022; Publications: Firestation FileNotes 2023. William Butler Yeats is widely considered to be one of the greatest poets of the 20th century. He was born in Dublin. His father was a lawyer and a well-known portrait painter. Yeats was educated in London and in Dublin, but he spent his summers in the west of Ireland in the family's summer house at Connaught. The young Yeats was very much part of the fin de siècle in London; at the same time he was active in societies that attempted an Irish literary revival. His first volume of verse appeared in 1887, but in his earlier period his dramatic production outweighed his poetry both in bulk and in import. Together with Lady Gregory he founded the Irish Theatre, which was to become the Abbey Theatre, and served as its chief playwright until the movement was joined by John Synge. His plays usually treat Irish legends; they also reflect his fascination with mysticism and spiritualism. The Countess Cathleen (1892), The Land of Heart's Desire (1894), Cathleen ni Houlihan (1902), The King's Threshold (1904), and Deirdre (1907) are among the best known. After 1910, Yeats's dramatic art took a sharp turn toward a highly poetical, static, and esoteric style. His later plays were written for small audiences; they experiment with masks, dance, and music, and were profoundly influenced by the Japanese Noh plays. Although a convinced patriot, Yeats deplored the hatred and the bigotry of the Nationalist movement, and his poetry is full of moving protests against it. He was appointed to the Irish Senate in 1922. Yeats is one of the few writers whose greatest works were written after the award of the Nobel Prize. Whereas he received the Prize chiefly for his dramatic works, his significance today rests on his lyric achievement. His poetry, especially the volumes The Wild Swans at Coole (1919), Michael Robartes and the Dancer (1921), The Tower (1928), The Winding Stair and Other Poems (1933), and Last Poems and Plays (1940), made him one of the outstanding and most influential twentieth-century poets writing in English. His recurrent themes are the contrast of art and life, masks, cyclical theories of life (the symbol of the winding stairs), and the ideal of beauty and ceremony contrasting with the hubbub of modern life. Relationships matter – more than money, more than status, more than material things. ~ Arlan Hamilton, It’s About Damn TimeFounders have characteristics that are not based on gender or race – they are extreme problem solvers with the ability to withstand high levels of uncertainty. They have tenacity, grit, resilience, and a high AQ! Adaptability Quotient. They follow their North Star, and they love the process. One does not need a degree or pedigree to be a funder, but when you’re underrepresented and underestimated, you have to watch out for unconscious bias. Our guest, Arlan Hamilton, is the founder and managing partner of Backstage Capital, a venture capital firm that exclusively invests in companies founded by women, people of color and LGBTQ entrepreneurs. Her journey from Tour Manager for music groups to founder of a VC firm, is extraordinary. She had a backpack, a laptop and a dream of becoming the Robin Hood of venture capital. In her recently published book, It's About Damn Time (https://amzn.to/2SGKn2u), Arlan shares how she turned her big, hairy, audacious vision of launching her own investment firm into reality despite all the evidence that shouted "oh hell no!" Arlan was so committed to her mission, that she was homeless when Backstage Capital's raise was finalized! From the opening line to the final piece of advice, I was consumed by Arlan’s stories, strategies, solutions, insights and inspiration for founders and for anyone pursuing a dream. As a founder of 4 businesses and a mentor/coach to newbie founders, I was delighted to find terrific reminders and new ways of viewing the startup journey. Given my deep knowledge of and experience with Venture Capital, it is JAW-DROPPING to read how Arlan built Backstage Capital! Throughout It’s About Damn Time (https://amzn.to/2SGKn2u ) she shares strategies, tactics and mindset hacks that helped her persevere without a smidgen of “traditional” experience, connections, and let’s be honest “the VC look.”The chapter on Resilience helped me go even deeper into accepting a painful, scary time in my life that required a lot of forgiveness. This period absolutely prepared me for my work in the world, as nothing else could prepare me. Thank you Arlan for reminding me these were “experiences built just for me.”Being a founder is hard work, and in moments of profound discouragement, we need reminders of why we're building a business, and why we are uniquely qualified to build our business for our customers. We need role models like Arlan Hamilton who share their struggles and stories so we can forge forward under enormous levels of uncertainty and constraints.Dear Founders - I gratefully share this interview with Arlan and It's About Damn Time so you may be reminded and inspired to continue bringing your gifts to the world. ♥Grab your copy of It's About Damn Time here: https://amzn.to/2SGKn2u To learn more about Backstage Capital, please visit: https://backstagecapital.com/Please follow Arlan Hamilton and Backstage Capital everywhere they GLOW:Twitter: https://twitter.com/ArlanWasHere and https://twitter.com/Backstage_CapInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/arlanwashere/ and https://www.instagram.com/backstagecapital/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/arlanhamilton/ and https://www.linkedin.com/company/backstage-capital/If you’d like to receive an alert whenever I post a new episode, please follow the Startup Life Show wherever you listen to podcasts, including: Stitcher, Spotify or Apple/Google Podcasts… and let’s connect on social media! Recently, Jessa attended a fascinating exhibition of mysticism and art at the IMMA in Dublin called “As Above, So Below: Portals, Visions, Spirits & Mystics.” Pádraic E Moore, writer/curator/art historian from Ireland based in Brussels, was a curatorial advisor for the exhibition. He joins Jessa via Skype to discuss the secret history of the occult and modernism and the role it played in art, writing, and revolution. Pádraic E. Moore (b. 1982) is a writer, curator, and art historian. He holds a BA in History of Art and English Literature from University College Dublin (2004), an MA in Visual Art Practices from IADT, Dublin (2007), and completed CuratorLab, the postgraduate programme at Konstfack University, Stockholm (2010). Moore's practice is shaped by the belief that visual art enables alternative modes of interaction in a world increasingly led by technological rationality. Moore's curatorial methodology is meticulous but subjective, and is informed by an acute awareness of the artist's individual position. Moore's research interests focus on the influence of esoteric philosophies upon the literary and visual arts. Deana is an aspiring costume designer currently going into her final year in IADT, originally from Wicklow but based in Dublin, she has a passion for sustainable fashion and incorporates that at the core of her work. Deana developed alopecia around the age of 14 and from that began her own personal journey with hair loss. Through this she experienced her own battles with "insecurities" and "body image issues" and it took her a long time to overcome her mindset at that difficult time and embrace her own natural beauty. Deana's goal is to promote and normalise the beauty of alopecia and all non conforming beauty to show that beauty has no limitations and there is not one set standard. Thank you to Depop for facilitating these brilliant conversations. My depop shop of the week this week is Deana's recommendation: @essiistore for incredible vintage and re worked clothing with streetwear labels for a fraction of the price than the high street.

The digital divide has been discussed as a limiting factor in social cohesion, since the early 2000s (Korupp & Szydlik, 2005). Authors suggested that the digital divide was a new form of social inequality, and therefore the term digital exclusion would better reflect the unequal access to digital resources among low socio-economic and ethnic minority groups (Cushman & Klecun, 2006). With the emergence of the smartphone as a relatively cheap and ubiquitous gateway to the digital world, access has somewhat widened for many people. However, a recent study (2018) by OFCOM in the UK reveals that there still is a distinct digital divide: non-users of the internet are more likely to be aged over 65 than users. Knowles & Hanson (2018) propose that despite being more proficient than previous generations, some older people may be rejecting digital technology in protest of an increasingly digital society that they do not trust. Whether rejection, digital exclusion or a myriad of factors, low participation in digital technology may be contributing to social isolation and exclusion among this age group in Ireland, especially in rural areas. Ethnographic methods have the potential to reveal how older people interact with digital technology, and socially, in their everyday lives and thus illuminate any issues of social isolation and exclusion. This paper explores digital exclusion as a social process and discusses preliminary findings from my research into the social lives of older people in the rural South East of Ireland, and their daily use of technology. Jessica Douglas is a first year PhD student at Waterford Institute of Technology and part of the Research Group of Design and Social Innovation (DASI). Her research is an interdisciplinary study of the social lives of older people in rural South East Ireland and their interaction with technology. She is also Assistant Digital Editor of the Irish Journal of Anthropology. She gained her MA Public Cultures & Society, First Class Honours, from IADT in 2016 and she previously graduated from the University of Liverpool and The University of Sheffield with a BSc and MSc.

Recently, Jessa attended a fascinating exhibition of mysticism and art at the IMMA in Dublin called As Above, So Below: Portals, Visions, Spirits & Mystics. Pdraic E Moore, writer/curator/art historian from Ireland based in Brussels, was a curatorial advisor for the exhibition. He joins Jessa via Skype to discuss the secret history of the occult and modernism and the role it played in art, writing, and revolution. Pdraic E. Moores practice is shaped by the belief that visual art enables alternative modes of interaction in a world increasingly led by technological rationality. Moores curatorial methodology is meticulous but subjective, and is informed by an acute awareness of the artists individual position. Moores research interests focus on the influence of esoteric philosophies upon the literary and visual arts. Recent study considers how occult organisations, such as the Theosophical Society, offered a vital catalyst for change in late 19th and early 20th century art.
