Today's guest is very much a member of the Damon Runyon school of characters. Charles Farrell is not only an accomplished jazz pianist, he has also been a key player in the boxing world for decades. From Floyd Patterson to Don King and scores of managers, promoters and celebrities to the fighters – both champs and bums – he knows as much about the “game” as anyone. Charles shares his insights in his new pseudo-memoir entitled, “The Legend of ‘Mitch Blood Green' and Other Boxing Essays.” One doesn't have to be a boxing fan or know much about pugilism to appreciate and enjoy his story!

A pacifist vegan with ties to the mob who fight-fixes, but also would never hurt a fly? Sounds like one big oxymoron, but in fact all of this (and more) is embodied in jazz musician and longtime animal advocate Charles Farrell. Charles shares how he would often take boxing and musician friends and clients to Buddha's Delight, a vegan restaurant in Boston's Chinatown, to share animal-free cooking with unlikely customers who were always won over by the delicious food. He mentions how he moved tarantulas safely out of his path while walking barefoot through the rainforests of Puerto Rico, and how he often came up against the classic “You don't eat meat?” incredulous question from hard-boiled Boston and New York mobsters. On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with our colleague, correspondent, and the award-winning boxing writer, Charles Farrell. We spoke with him by phone Sunday. While the coronavirus pandemic is still raging in many parts of the world, there nevertheless have been many notable fights involving top boxers in recent weeks. Among those fights we discussed were: Juan Francisco Estrada vs. Carlos Cuadras 2 and Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez vs. Israel Gonzalez on October 23, and Naoya Inoue vs. Jason Moloney, Gervonta Davis vs. Leo Santa Cruz, and Oleksandr Usyk vs. Derek Chisora, which were all on October 31. Estrada, he said, "may be the best technical fighter fighting today. He does everything beautifully." His opponent in their rematch, Cuadras, "is brilliantly talented." This exciting, even matchup, where the outcome was in doubt until the very end, made this "the best fight I've seen in the last couple of years," he said. The impressive knockouts on the same night by Naoya Inoue and Gervonta Davis have invited comparisons between the performances of these two boxers. "I thought Inoue was the fighter of the night," said Charles Farrell. "I'm impressed with Davis's performance, but I was impressed with Santa Cruz's performance, too." He added, "We already know that Davis can punch." But he cautioned, "I would say that, anybody that size who is hit with a punch like that, it would have the same effect. He'd knock them out cold. But I do think that some questions opened up that maybe we didn't have before." After discussing more on all these fights and the current state of boxing, we moved on to Charles Farrell's memoir, which is due out in June 2021. It is entitled "(Low)life: A Memoir of Jazz, Fight-Fixing, and The Mob". That led us into examining the connections between boxing, jazz, and the mob, and how boxing can only be understood as part of culture and not just a sport. All this discussion of these fight of the year and knockout of the year candidates, as well as what might happen in 2021 in boxing especially with the heavyweights, makes this lengthy show the boxing podcast of the year.

Best In Wealth - Best Practices for Real People, Investments, Retirement Planning, Money Management, Wealth Building, Financi

Are you on track for retirement? Do you have enough money saved at this point in your life to retire or reach financial freedom by 65? One of the biggest questions I hear is: How much money do I need to save for retirement? In this episode of Best in Wealth, I do my best to answer that question using the formula Charles Farrell outlines in his book, (https://www.amazon.com/Your-Money-Ratios-Financial-Security/dp/1583334165). You need to take actionable steps now to be prepared for your future. Outline of This Episode[0:35] What do you dream about doing? [3:58] Are you on track for retirement? [11:15] Why you need 80% of your current income [13:51] How do you come up with the $60,000? [17:37] What’s your job now? Get retirement ready with Charles Farrell’s formulaYou need to create a detailed retirement plan to really zero in on your goals and get the right steps in place to prepare. In his book, Charles Farrell shares a simplified version of how much savings you’ll need. I’ll give you some simple guidelines from this book that demonstrate where you should be at each stage of life. The goal is to hit at least 12x your household income in order to retire, so you can live off of 80% of that of your household income in retirement. Charles developed the Capital to Income Ratio. You can use it to find out if you’re on track to get to 12x your income by the time you retire. If your household income is $100,000 annually, you need to save $1.2 million for retirement. So where do you need to be at each age? Here are the income ratios by age, with the approximate amount you should have saved if your household income is $100,000 annually: Age Income Ratio Savings Required 25 0.1 $10,000 30 0.6 $60,000 35 1.4 $140,000 40 2.4 $240,000 45 3.7 $370,000 50 5.2 $520,000 55 7.1 $710,000 60 9.4 $940,000 65 12 $1.2 million So are you on track for retirement?Based on the table above—are you on track for retirement? Here’s how to calculate it: Take your household income and multiply that by the income ratio that correlates with your age to see if you’re currently on track. It’s easy to calculate if you’re paid a salary. If you aren’t, count the average of your pay for the last 4 years as your income. By the way, by money saved, we’re talking about things such as your 401k, IRA, annuities, CDs, life insurance, checking and savings, real estate, etc. Please note that your home is NOT a capital investment. How do you live on 80% of your current income? How do you live on 80% of your current income in retirement if you need 100% of it now? Where did Charles come up with that number? If you’re going to get to 12x your income by retirement age, you have to be saving 12–15% of your $100,000 annual income to get there. If you’re saving 12% now, you really only need 88% of your income to live off of. In retirement, you won’t be saving for your retirement anymore. Plus, your mortgage should be paid off by the time you retire. If your mortgage accounts for 20% of what you pay and we take off another 12% for savings, 7.65% for social security taxes, that brings you down to $60,000. So you really only need $60,000 to live off what you’re making right now. Social security will play a role—it typically replaces 20% of your income. If you’re making around $100,000 a year, it will make up the other $20,000 to bring you to the projected $80,000 a year in retirement. You want that extra $20,000 cushion to account for things like yearly inflation, medical expenses, or perhaps even vacations. Keep listening to find out why I think the 5% rule can be dangerous—and what I think you should do instead. What is your job now?But Scott, what if I’m not on track? Are you anywhere close? What if you’ve fallen behind? If you’re not on track for retirement, your job is to get on track. Once you figure out what you should have saved at your current age, there are some things you can do: If you’re 50 years old and you don’t have half a...

Born in 1932, Mickey began to add to the family income at age 2 when, by chance, he was cast by Fox Studios for the movie “Change of Heart” (1934) starring the preeminent movie couple at the time, Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell. In 1939, Mickey appeared as Crown Prince Augustin in  “Juarez” starring  Bette Davis and, most notably, as Olivia de Havilland and Leslie Howard’s son Beau in “Gone with the Wind.” “One-Take Mickey” proved quite dependable and was actively involved in several prestigious pictures during the 1940s and 50s including “One Foot in Heaven” (1941), “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” (1945), “Red River” (1948), “Broken Arrow” (1950) and “A Streetcar Named Desire” (1951). After a four-year term of duty, he returned to films and TV in 1955 and attended L.A. Valley College and Cal State Northridge on his G.I. Bill and majored in Theater Arts. Our main topic was the biggest fight of the year so far, the heavyweight title unification fight taking place this Saturday, March 31, between the two undefeated belt holders Anthony Joshua of the U.K. and Joseph Parker of New Zealand. The 28-year-old Joshua is the IBF and WBA champ and has a record of 20-0 with 20 KOs. The 26-year-old Parker is the WBO champ and has a record of 24-0 with 18 KOs. This fight takes place at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. It will be televised live on Sky Sports Box Office in the U.K., Showtime in the U.S., and many other networks around the world. We discussed how we see this fight going, why Joshua is deservedly a big favorite, what is likely to happen in the series of events which may lead to the crowning of an undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, the many options in the heavyweight division and business-wise for Joshua should he defeat Parker, the music of Marvin Gaye, and much more. On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with our colleague, correspondent, and award-winning boxing writer, Charles Farrell. He is also one of the writers featured in the new book The Bittersweet Science. Our main topic was the April 29 heavyweight title unification fight between the 27-year-old IBF champion Anthony Joshua (18-0, 18 KOs) and the 41-year-old former champion Wladimir Klitschko (64-4, 53 KOs). This fight, which is also for a vacant WBA title, takes place at the sold-out 90,000-seat Wembley Stadium in London. It will be shown live in the U.K. on Sky Sports Box Office and in Germany on RTL, with record viewership likely on each. In the U.S., Showtime will telecast it live, with HBO later showing a replay. We spoke with Charles Farrell by phone Thursday. While both of us expect Joshua to defeat Klitschko by knockout, we see this fight as having far more significance than just a heavyweight title bout. "For one thing, it establishes the next dominant heavyweight champion of the world, at a time when there really hasn't been one for a period of time," Charles Farrell said. "But maybe more importantly than that, it will serve I think as the kind of coming out party for a fighter who has all of the attributes necessary to become one of the, certainly one of the most famous fighters in history, very conceivably the highest paid fighter in history. "And a guy who if he's promoted -- he barely has to be promoted in the U.K. They're waiting for him. This is a coronation of sorts. "But this is a kind of celebrity that can easily translate worldwide. "So I think that this fight, if it goes the way most people expect that it will go, heralds not only a new heavyweight champion, a significant new heavyweight champion, but a new era in terms of money-making possibility." We discussed how the U.K. has once again become a major place for boxing; why we expect this fight to be a decisive and likely quick knockout victory for Joshua; Klitschko's awful performance in his last fight in November 2015 against Tyson Fury; how Joshua is well-schooled as a fighter and has been prepared for his role as an international superstar; potential future opponents for Joshua including WBC heavyweight champ Deontay Wilder of the U.S. and a possible huge fight between them in New York or Las Vegas; what should happen if Tyson Fury returns to fighting; why Anthony Joshua is reminiscent of Joe Louis; the parochialism of much of the American boxing media and fan base in not recognizing Joshua's full potential; and much, much more. This week we have a change of tack, a complete break from the Donald and that jazz. We delve into the shady of world of Professional Boxing, with the former Boxing Manager, Gambler, Gangster, Jazz Pianist, Writer, and Fight-Fixer, Charles Farrell. Boxing is a sport that has always fascinated me. It’s much more than a mere sport - it’s a metaphor for life itself, full of light and shadow, failure and redemption. Charles has led a life of a pulp-fiction novel character, from living on the streets of Boston from the age of 12, and playing piano in the hotels and brothels of Boston, to managing former heavyweight champion of the world, Leon Spinks. Charles is also starring in a new documentary, Ditry Games, about the corruption and fixing in the world of sport, and is appearing in the new book ‘The Bittersweet Science’, a collection of essays from some of the greatest writers on boxing, which is due out early next year from the University of Chicago Press. A story of hustles and gambles within lowlife culture. Charles Farrell could be labeled a number of things: pianist, writer, boxing manager, and hustler. As a teenager, Farrell lived in the streets of Boston, playing piano in mafia-owned clubs. With a love for boxing, he started gambling on high-profile matches while also managing fighters. He fixed an array of professional fights by using code-talk with trainers, foolproof matchmaking, and buying referees and judges. In this story, the highs and lows of gangster culture are explored as Charles Farrell describes the ease of taking advantage of society’s vulnerable parts.  Produced by Brendan Baker, Garrett Crowe, Mike Martinez, Nick van der Kolk, and Tyler Wray Information on Charles Farrell at worldtriberecords.com.
