People often assume they're hydrated just because they're drinking water all day... but that's not always the case. If you're feeling tired, foggy, or just off, dehydration could be the reason. On today's show, I break down what dehydration really looks like at the cellular level. The truth is, simply drinking more water isn't enough. Without the right balance of electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium, your body may not properly absorb the fluids you're taking in. I'll also cover the 5 key signs your body is dehydrated and share simple, practical strategies to improve hydration, from optimizing your morning routine to adding electrolytes and avoiding common mistakes that can actually make things worse.

Show Notes:Emilie is a an AMGA/IFMGA Mountain Guide but she likes lots of things that have nothing to do with mountains: cats, true crime podcasts, and books about early Arctic exploration to name a few. When she is guiding, she's a generalist and finds equal enjoyment on sunny rock climbs, steep ice, and snowy slopes. If she's not home in Salt Lake City, UT, she likes traveling the world….the more unusual the place, the better!Emilie's Links:http://www.emiliedrinkwater.comEpisode Intro:Dear listeners of the Female Guides Requested Podcast, welcome back. This is your host Ting Ting from Las Vegas. Today I am joined by a veteran of the guiding world, Emilie Drinkwater. With over 25 years of experience, Emilie's career has taken her from the rugged ice of the Adirondacks to pioneering leadership programs for women in Afghanistan. As an IFMGA-certified guide and a member of the AMGA instructor team, she brings a wealth of knowledge on what it means to make guiding a lifelong profession. In this episode, we dive into her transition from the Northeast to the West, the cultural complexities of guiding abroad, and a recent, harrowing health scare that changed her perspective on the risks we take in the mountains. Let's get into the conversation with Emilie Drinkwater.Quotes:On her start in guiding: “I literally begged my way into a job guiding people… Guiding's kind of my only marketable skill at this point. So luckily I like it and I have no plans of stopping anytime soon.”On being a female guide: “I love the title of your podcast because my whole career is like I have these opportunities because a female guide has been requested. And I'm often in a place where I'm… a bit of a rarity.”On the reality of the profession: “Guiding it's a good career for extroverted people, which I'm not. And so, yeah, any job, it's most of the time it's great, but there's definitely times where I'm tired or stressed or have a little feeling of burnout.”On the value of instruction: “I always learn from students… every single program I learned something new and I'm like, ‘Wow, I can't believe I've never seen or heard that before.'”On guiding in Afghanistan: “When we think of terrorists and Taliban… the majority of people in Afghanistan are just generous and kind and they're poor. They don't have money, it's a tough place to live.”On the guide's mindset during a health crisis: “As guides we are really used to being uncomfortable all the time… our tolerance level may be dangerously high. And that is something I've learned is I need to say something sooner if I'm not feeling good.”On finding the right partner: “A perfect partner is somebody who compliments you… somebody that you're on the same page with—they'll support you, but also you have a similar enough skill set.”On the definition of success: “Success begins with a willingness to try… because I think if you tried something you probably learned a lot from it… the success comes in trying and learning from each bit of it.”

Then we talk life updates. In the news, we cover Seattle Seahawks vs. New England Patriots Super Bowl 60 excitement, why Harry Styles' new song isn't doing it for me, and Brooklyn Beckham airing out his family drama via Instagram Stories. We close with a serious conversation about ICE protests, including the Minneapolis fatal shootings of Alex Pretti and Renée Good, federal agent violence, leadership failures, and why two things can be true at once. Jenn talks about how difficult it is trying to convince Presley to drink more water.
In this conversation, we talk about how staying hydrated in the winter is way harder than it should be, because apparently when it's cold, our bodies just forget how thirst works. We also remind ourselves not to panic over normal weight fluctuations (because the scale loves drama), and we dig into why boring, consistent healthy habits actually matter more than quick fixes. We nerd out a bit on the science of hydration, including sneaky signs of dehydration and the very rude reality of a dull thirst response. (Yes, your body can be dehydrated and still say, “Nah, I'm fine.”)Along the way, we share creative (and slightly ridiculous) ways to drink more water, and we wrap it up by talking about setting realistic, doable health goals for the new year, because we're aiming for progress, not a personality transplant.Basically: more water, less panic, better habits, and a lot more grace for ourselves.Products mentioned: Nordic Naturals Algae Omega

There are at least 3 reasons why you should avoid drinking water before going to sleep: you'll be running to the bathroom throughout the night, you might notice some facial and limb swelling in the morning, and the volume of your blood increases dangerously. Experts say that excessive water intake while exercising can have several negative side effects. Completely clear urine is a sign of over-hydration. If you have colorless urine, you're probably drinking too much water during the day, even when you don't feel thirsty. You should never drink water after eating something spicy like chili peppers. Having too much water with your meal often leads to indigestion. This happens because your mouth produces saliva, which has enzymes that are essential for a healthy digestive process. It may seem like a great idea to refresh yourself on a hot summer day by drinking some water from the garden hose. But even if the hose is connected to a pipe with a clean water system, the pipe itself contains elements that can be really dangerous for your health. If you accidentally get some water in your mouth while swimming in the sea, you should spit it out immediately. Not unless you want to spend your whole vacation suffering from rotavirus and all its nasty symptoms. It's important to remember that drinking excessive amounts of water leads to low sodium levels and unpleasant side effects. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
