The Taliban in Afghanistan are to be taken to the International Court of Justice for gender discrimination by Canada, Australia, Germany and the Netherlands. This is the first time that the ICJ has been used by one country to take another to court over women's rights. Krupa Padhy is joined by the BBC's Chief International Correspondent, Lyse Doucet. Two weeks of paternity leave isn't enough, according to the Dad Shift, a campaign group which is calling for more affordable paternity leave. Last week, they made headlines by attaching life-size model babies in slings to statues of men across London, in a bid to raise awareness of the issue. Research suggests that a third of eligible parents don't take up the two weeks of statutory paid leave. George Gabriel from the Dad Shift; Scott Inglis, a parent and trade union rep for the University and College Union; and Dr Sarah Forbes, Director of the Equal Parenting Project at the University of York, join Krupa to discuss how current policies are working for parents. What would happen if a mysterious woman on a flight began predicting the deaths of her fellow passengers? This is the premise of Australian writer Liane Moriarty's latest book, Here One Moment. Liane joins Krupa to discuss her novels, which include the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning Big Little Lies. Since the end of April, the University and College Union in the UK has been on a marking strike to demand fair pay and working conditions that have deteriorated significantly. This week, we talk to Dr. Lucy Mayblin a Political Sociologist at the University of Sheffield, about what has been happening in UK academia, including how universities are transforming from institutions of public good to private institutions, and where university professors and staff are increasingly being made to act effectively as border guards with international students to create, quite explicitly, a hostile environment. In our conversation, we talk about the rise of neoliberalism in British academia, about how bordering practices are taking hold in UK universities, and ways for academics to take back their time.Related LinksUniversity and College Union Marking and assessment boycott 2023Backgrounder on the Hostile Environment PolicyThanks for listening! Join Haymarket and Spectre Journal for a launch of Kim Moody's new book, Breaking the Impasse. Unlike most countries, the US has no labor party, let alone a mass socialist party. In an effort to overcome this predicament, a new generation of militants hope to transform the Democratic Party or use its ballot to build forces inside it for an eventual “dirty break.” In his new book, Moody argues this electoral orientation is a trap and that socialists should instead build class and social struggle and galvanize a militant minority as the preconditions for the formation of a working class party. Get the book, Breaking the Impasse: https://www.haymarketbooks.org/books/1873-breaking-the-impasse Speakers: Kim Moody was a founder of Labor Notes in the US and the author of several books on labour and politics including Breaking the Impasse: Electoral Politics, Mass Action & the New Socialist Movement in the United States (2022); Tramps & Trade Union Travelers: Internal Migration and Organized Labor in Gilded Age America (2017); and On New Terrain: How Capital Is Reshaping The Battleground Of Class War; all from Haymarket. He has a PhD from the University of Nottingham and is currently a Visiting Scholar at the University of Westminster in London. Lois Weiner, Professor Emerita, New Jersey City University, is a career teacher, education researcher, and teacher union activist. Her new book, as yet untitled, takes up what the Left can learn about defending social justice and workers' rights by examining capitalism's latest project to deprofessionalize teaching, undercut teachers' labor activism, and destroy public education. In February 2020, 74 universities affiliated to the UCU (University and College Union) began 14 days of industrial action, launching ‘Four Fights’ over casualisation of labour, unsafe workloads, falling pay, and gender and ethnicity pay gaps. The strikes became national news, supported by staff and students alike, with vibrant picket lines at many “art schools” across the country speaking out against exorbitant tuition fees, massive pay gaps between vice chancellors and lecturers, the punitive and racist Prevent programme introduced to stop student ‘radicalisation’, the digitalisation of courses and much more. Juliet Jacques – herself a visiting lecturer at the Royal College of Art, where 90% of staff are casualised – spoke to artist and researcher Dr Annie Goh, a lecturer in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins and an Associate Lecturer in Sound Arts at London College of Communication, and Kyran Joughin, lecturer in film and critical practice at Wimbledon College of Art (part of the University of the Arts London) about the recent strikes, how the coronavirus crisis might lead to further digitalisation and casualisation, and how staff and students might organise against it. They also discussed the legacy of Thatcher’s assault on the idea of cultural democracy, the marketisation of education and privatisation of knowledge under the New Labour government, and the student protests after the Liberal Democrats broke their promise to abolish tuition fees on joining the Conservative-led coalition in 2010. On today's show we dissect the moments from yesterday's impeachment hearing Democrats in and out of the media don't want people to hear. Plus, the media drops the ball with another fake news story on immigration, a Democratic mayor gets arrested for allegedly taking a bribe and the New York Times buries his party affiliation, and a university lecturer's union declares it ok and normal for people to identify as another race. Day 1 of week 2 of the impeachment hearings didn't go any better than week 1 for Democrats. Adam Schiff and Lt. Colonel Alexander Vindman were both outed as likely being less than truthful, so to speak, when it comes to their claims of not knowing who the so-called whistleblower is. The audio is hilarious and needs to be heard to be believed, which means both men really can't be believed at all. News outlets had themselves a big scoop: the Trump administration was detaining 100,000 illegal alien children. Liberals scrambled to spread the story in an attempt to use it to attack President Trump, only there was one big problem: the numbers were from 2015, when Barack Obama was president. Suddenly, all "news" value in the story was gone and it was retracted. Weird, right? We get into it. The Democratic Mayor of Muncie, Indiana was indicted on charges of bribery Monday, but you'd have to read well down into the New York Times story on the subject to discover which political party he belongs to. It's good to be a Democrat. We have the story. And the University and College Union, representing more than 100,000 university lecturers, has declared that people can identify and transition to other races. This is going over as well as you'd expect, but in a world where men can claim to be women and dominate women's sports, is there really any argument against the next level of insanity?

In this episode, we take a deep dive into questions of class composition and labour movement strategy via an interview with Kim Moody. Kim is a labour movement writer and activist, who co-founded Labor Notes in the USA (www.labornotes.org). His new book, ‘On New Terrain: How Capital is Reshaping the Battleground of Class War’ is published by Haymarket, and is available to buy here: https://www.haymarketbooks.org/books/1106-on-new-terrain We begin the episode with a rattle through some recent labour movement news, including: “An Open Letter to Fellow Aslef Drivers”, looking at questions of industrial unionism and class solidarity in railway workers’ strikes against the imposition of “Driver Only Operation”: www.workersliberty.org/blogs/2018-01-19/open-letter-fellow-aslef-drivers-which-side-are-we The latest with the Picturehouse Cinema workers’ strikes. The role of British universities as places for building and nurturing multicultural communities might be at a risk as a result of Brexit. Canada has recently overtaken the UK as the most desirable destination for EU students, and the number of those applying for early deadline courses via UCAS has dropped by nine per cent. And it doesn’t look much different for the teaching staff as the University and College Union found that 76 per cent of EU academics working in Britain are now more likely to consider leaving the country and a third of them already know of fellow academics leaving the UK. To get some insight into how universities, their students and staff are feeling about this we brought on Sally Hunt, who’s the general secretary of the UCU. We discuss what a multicultural campus offers its students and what is needed, especially from Theresa May in her government, to sustain this. #Podcast #Brexit #BrexitPodcast #Referendum #EUReferendum #VoteLeave #VoteRemain #VoteIn #EU #UK #TimHeming #JenniferHahn #News #Politics #highereducation #university #college #sallyhunt #universityandcollegeunion #ucu #erasmus #students #student #internationalstudent #semesterabroad #academics #teachingstaff #lecturers #researchstudents #phd #master #bachelor
