Today we'll finish up our week on living poor in spirit by exploring how spiritual freedom is tied to spiritual poverty. May you be stirred up today to live free as you hold tightly to the truths of God's kingdom. Abundant life is available to us now as we seek to live low and abide in Jesus. Our Scripture for today comes from 1 Peter 2:16. Today's worship is Freedom Song by Christy Nockels. – We are so excited to announce our very first First15 Kid's Devotional book, My Time With God. Get your copy of First15's first ever devotional book for kids today! My Time with God is a 20 day devotional written for young readers, ages 6-12, to help encourage and equip them to establish a lifetime of learning and walking with God through daily scripture reading and reflection. Each day of this 20 day devotional includes scriptures, activities, and prayers to help growing believers learn how to connect more deeply with God and about how spending time with God helps us live the life he's called us to. This resource is foundational, answering questions such as, What is a devotional? What is prayer? Why spend time with God? What does it mean to enjoy God's presence? “When we choose to love God and let ourselves experience his love, he also teaches us how to love others. Living for love means living like Jesus did. He was always thinking of others.” Request your copy of First15's new kids devotional, My Time With God, today by clicking here, and help your kids explore spending time with God each and every day!
In our second day looking at what it means to be the child of God, we're going to take time today to look at a new bloodline of freedom we've inherited as God's children. May we live unchained to the terrible effects of sin today as we learn to walk out our new identity in Christ. Our Scripture for today comes from 1 John 3:2-3, and today's worship is Freedom Song by Christy Nockles. -- Thanks for listening to today's First15 Podcast. My name is Ryn, and I'm a part of the First15 Team. If you haven't downloaded our brand new First15 app, make sure to click the link in today's show notes to check it out! One of the new features that you can enjoy when you download the app is our Guided Prayers. We are adding new prayers to our library every month, so if you need a moment of peace with God, let these prayers be your guide! In a world where confusion has the potential to be as pervasive as it is contagious, centering ourselves around God's truth is essential if we are to maintain clarity of thought in any regard. In this prayer, Dr. Jerome Van Kuiken helps us not only seek a lack of confusion, but a deep and abiding relationship with God through acknowledgement and confession of our need for him and adoration for who he is. He is the God who offers peace and direction freely to all who ask for it. May this prayer be a guide to you as you learn to trust in the God who has made a way for us.

Hey, friends, it's our 100th Episode!!!! We are so excited to have reached this mark! We are also very excited to have our guest for today….Christy Nockels! Can you even believe it?!? Christy has been a worship leader, singer, and songwriter for several decades. She also has her own podcast, Glorious in the Mundane. If that's not enough, she has a book she's written called, The Life You Long For, and has a new album close to release. Christy shared with us about her scary season of being faced with hearing loss after a virus. This hearing loss was thought to be permanent; however, God is still the God of miracles! She shares her journey with us today, and we are so thankful for her heart for the Lord and how He has used her gifts for His glory. Christy Nockels Biography: As a worship leader for over 25 years, Christy Nockels would tell you that her heart is to simply lead others to connect and communicate with the living God. Christy began writing music and singing in the church at a young age, as the daughter of a pastor in Oklahoma. She met musician, Nathan Nockels, in 1993 at the Christian Artist Seminar in Estes Park, Colorado and the two married in 1995. The couple would form the Christian music duo, Watermark, touring nationwide and recording five acclaimed albums, including seven number one radio singles from 1998 to 2005, before laying down their Watermark journey for the sake of their family. Christy and Nathan were also among those invited by Louie and Shelley Giglio to be a part of the very first Passion Conference in Austin, TX, in 1997, which flourished into a fruitful twenty years of the couple songwriting and leading for the Passion Movement. Christy's voice and heart can be heard on songs like, “Waiting Here For You,” as well as her songwriting featured on church anthems like, “Lord, I Need You,” and “Healing is in Your Hands.” Christy now records for Keeper's Branch Records, the couple's independent record label, where they've enjoyed releasing fan-favorites like Be Held; Lullabies for the Beloved. Christy also launched a podcast in 2016 called, “The Glorious in the Mundane,” which is intentionally focused on helping women in any season of life, find the wonder and awe of God in the moments of the here and now. Christy and Nathan live in Franklin, TN where they love to gather around the farm table and even make music with their three children, Noah, Elliana and Annie Rose. They also love to spend time making their home, affectionally called Keeper's Branch, a place of rest for all who gather there. Today we're tackling another difficult topic: the criminal justice system. But before we get to that and other important issues, like what's been going on in Ukraine, we have something positive to celebrate! Last weekend, hosts Jasmine Clark, Amanda Weinstein and Rachel Vindman finally all met each other in person! Amanda and Rachel attended a fundraiser for Jasmine's re-election campaign but they also all made time for meaningful conversations and just getting a tour of Jasmine's neck of the woods. After discussing the prison system amongst themselves, the hosts are joined by Barbara Gaskins, a mom in North Carolina who founded a non-profit dedicated to incarceration re-entry. And on top of that, she's also running for Congress! Amanda, Jasmine and Rachel talk to Barbara about her own experience with the criminal justice system and how difficult it is to move on with a clean slate, even decades later. They also discuss the overall injustice of the system, from the paltry charges given to the January 6th insurrectionists to the constant fear Jasmine and Barbara have for their sons interacting with the police. After that, Rachel interviews Marlon Peterson, the author of Bird Uncaged: An Abolitionist's Freedom Song. Marlon faced a difficult childhood as an immigrant in Brooklyn and ended up spending over 10 years in prison. He has since become a speaker, an author, and an activist, fighting for incarceration reform. Marlon and Rachel discuss his book, his work, and the connections he sees between the “skin-peeling work” he had to do to face his own past and the bans on Critical Race Theory that stop us as a nation from facing our past together. Finally, Rachel, Amanda and Jasmine raise a glass to their fun weekend together in Atlanta in this week's “Toast to Joy.”If you want to join the conversation, head over to theswppod.com! Marlon Peterson grew up in 1980s and 90s Crown Heights, raised by Trinidadian immigrants. Amid the routine violence and crack epidemic that would come to shape the perception of his neighborhood, Peterson spent his childhood preaching the good word alongside his father, a devout Jehovah's Witness. The specter of the American Dream loomed large, and with his achievement of 6th grade valedictorian, it seemed within reach. But in the aftermath of physical and sexual trauma, Peterson made a series of choices that led to his first arrest, getting shot, and his participation in a robbery that resulted in two murders. At 19, Peterson was charged and later convicted; he served ten years in prison. During his incarceration, Peterson immersed himself in anti-violence activism, education, and prison abolition. He continues this work today, and he joined us now to recount his coming of age story, contained in his book Bird Uncaged: An Abolitionist's Freedom Song. With his own story, Peterson challenged the typical “redemption” narrative and our assumptions about who deserves justice. With vulnerability and insight, he exposed what he sees as the hollowness of the American Dream; the daily violence and trauma of poverty, policing, and enforced masculinity; and the brutality of incarceration. Don't miss this powerful 21st century abolitionist story, that demands a shift from punishment to healing, an end to mass incarceration, and a new vision of justice. Marlon Peterson is the principal of The Precedential Group, a social justice consulting firm. He is host of the Decarcerated Podcast, a Senior Atlantic Fellow for Racial Equity, a member of the ASpen Global Leadership Network, and a 2015 recipient of the Soros Justice Fellowship. He contributed to Kiese Laymon's How to Kill Yourself and Others in America and Akiba Solomon and Kenrya Rankin's How We Fight White Supremacy. His writing has appeared in Ebony, THe Nation, USA Today, Colorlines, and more. Welcome to another incredible story from At the End of the Tunnel! You might be wondering: what tunnel is Light always referring to? Well, your tunnel is that darkest moment in your life when you think all hope is lost. If you haven’t had your dark tunnel moment yet or you are currently working your way through one, these stories serve as reminders that, while these tunnels signal the end of a part of your life, they also signify the beginning of another. This next phase is often when the real you has an opportunity to shine through.Today’s guest had his dark tunnel moment when he got caught up in an attempted robbery as a teenager and was facing life in the New York State prison system. Marlon Peterson also saw the light at the end of the tunnel, however, and struck up a letter correspondence with a teacher from his old neighborhood and her students. Because of everything he had been through in his life, he became uniquely qualified to offer these kids insight and wisdom into their issues, traumas, and “brokenness.” With a renewed sense of purpose, Marlon went on to earn an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice with Honors. He also spent the last five years of his incarceration as the head of the Transitional Services Center, where he created programming and curricula for men nearing release from incarceration and spearheaded and designed an experiential work-shop for incarcerated men and college students.Since then, Marlon has been named him one of America's 100 Most Influential and Inspiring Leaders in the Black Community by Ebony magazine, is an Aspen Ideas Festival Scholar, a Fall 2016 TED Resident, and a 2015 recipient of the prestigious Soros Justice Fellowship. His TED Talk, ‘Am I not human? A call for criminal justice reform’ has over 1 million views and he is the best-selling author of Bird Uncaged: An Abolitionist's Freedom Song. He is also the host of the Decarcerated Podcast, an Atlantic Fellow for Racial Equity, and the founder and chief re-imaginator of The Precedential Group, a social justice consulting firm. Marlon’s story proves that there is hope at the end of any dark tunnel if you have the honesty and resolve to let your inner light shine. Tune in today for a candid, challenging, inspiring and, ultimately, uplifting conversation with Marlon Peterson!
Everything we were taught to believe about crime, justice, race, and gender needs to be criticized, says Marlon Peterson: We need to recenter humanity in accountability measures; we must allow room for various identities in criminal justice discourse. Formerly incarcerated author and activist Marlon Peterson is one of the many vanguards in changing the world we live in, and he documents it all in his new memoir Bird Uncaged. Born and raised by Trinidadian parents in Brooklyn, NY, Peterson spent his childhood adjacent to ongoing city violence while simultaneously preaching the good word alongside his father, a devout Jehovah's Witness. His parents immigrated to the United States to achieve the long-desired American Dream, and Peterson too believed it was possible. But in the aftermath of physical and sexual trauma, Peterson made a series of choices that led to his participation in a robbery that resulted in two murders, granting him 10 years in prison at the age of 19. Spending his twenties incarcerated, Peterson completed his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice with Honors and immersed himself in anti-violence activism, education and prison abolition. In Bird Uncaged, Peterson exposes the brutality of incarceration and the hollowness of the American Dream. He encourages us all to reveal and break from the many cages — both physical and metaphorical — created and maintained by American society. Join us as Marlon Peterson envisions a new world that focuses on healing instead of punishment, an end to mass incarceration, and a new vision of justice. (4/12/21) Marlon Peterson grew up in 1980s Crown Heights, raised by Trinidadian immigrants. In the aftermath of childhood trauma, he participated in a robbery that resulted in two murders. At the age of 19, Marlon served a 10-year prison sentence. While incarcerated, he immersed himself in anti-violence activism, education and prison abolition work. In his new memoir Bird Uncaged: An Abolitionist's Freedom Song, Marlon challenges the typical “redemption” narrative and our assumptions about what real justice is. Join us for a dramatic rethinking of the prison industrial complex in this installment of Leonard Lopate at Large on WBAI.

200 years ago, on the 25th of March 1821, Greeks started a revolution against 400 years of Ottoman rule, and regained their freedom. In 2020, Hellenes the world over, are commemorating this very significant milestone of our history and planning special initiatives to celebrate. The Hellenic Federation of SA has been working on a Freedom Song with original music to commemorate this occasion. Kyrio Babi Pappas, from the Saheti School Bouzouki Music department, assisted us in completing the song and Youla Pandazi spoke to him on Hellenic Radio about the song.

Food is super important, and so are the farmer's that grow it, but the ag business is manipulated and floated by big government so much so, it's hard to understand some of the real costs. PART OF OUR BLACK HISTORY MONTH SERIESA choir of ex-slaves, raising funds to build their University, toured America from 1871, suffering discrimination and hardship. They came to England, were treated with respect and sang to Queen Victoria and Gladstone. Spiritual songs are folk music and belong to us all, but because they came out of such horrific suffering it's hard to know how to sing them. This lecture tells the tale of the singers whose courage and enterprise brought them to the world. The songs they sang include Steal Away to Jesus, Go Down, Moses and Deep River.A lecture by Professor Harvey Brough with Emily Dankworth, Christina Gill, Wills Morgan and Michael Henry, Vox Holloway Choir 24 OctoberThe transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/freedom-songGresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597.
