Ep. 133: we're joined by Paul Sampson, CEO and founder of Lickd, the licensing startup that supplies music to creators on YouTube and other platforms. We seem to be shifting into an era where a new and widespread use of music is emerging – where music is a component of a wider experience: for instance in the background of short/long videos, live streams of gaming, or as part of users building interactive experiences - almost “music as Lego”. We chat to Paul about the future of music usage and whether the current system of licensing is up to the task of recovering the correct money for music creators. Creators of online content are eager to use recognisable hit songs in what they make. And Paul Samson has an interesting perspective on these creators needs – whether they are zillion-streaming superstars like MrBeast, or more modestly-successful creators. So we ask him about what they actually want from music, and also how they view music in terms of its use and its value, when they are perhaps only using it as a component of something bigger that they're piecing together. My guest on this episode is Paul Sampson, who's the founder and CEO of the music licensing service for creators, Lickd. Paul started in the entertainment business working for a small television production company, where he encountered difficulties licensing music multiple times, which made him want to understand the nuances and problems of music licensing that needed solving. That led to a job with the stock music company Extreme Music, where he rose through the ranks to become head of its U.S. operation. After a stint focusing more on commercial music and unsigned independent acts, Paul launched Lickd to help YouTube and Instagram creators legally license music for their videos. Lickd currently works with over 10,000 labels and publishers to help pre-clear their music for social platforms, games, and even the various metaverses. It's the only licensing platform in the world where you can get over 1 million chart tracks for your videos without fear of copyright claims. During the interview we talked about the problem that creators can have with YouTube's Content ID and music licenses, the nuances of music in the metaverse, how AI will affect production music, and much more. I spoke with Paul via Zoom from his office in London. On the intro I'll take a look at Spotify DIY successes shrink, and famous guitar collectible prices soar.
Did you know that in the United States, 29% of teenagers cite being a YouTuber as their chosen profession, or intended profession. The youth of today are discovering a way to create content, and become influencers. But along the way, there's been a few stumbling blocks, and one of those is the music they use of other artists on the videos they've created being cleared (approved) for playing. Four or five years ago, we didn't know what Tik Tok was. Now it's the largest social platform in the world. In place of the traditional licensing that doesn't fit this dynamic, there needs to be a micro licensing solution that makes sense for the DIY content creator. YouTube in its own right has 60 million active channels. If you're an individual content creator, and you're a fan of a particular artist whose music you want to incorporate into your project, finding out who their label is, is probably the easiest part. But searching and locating the copyright holder and publisher(s) can be mind numbing, let alone attempting to get the proper clearances and approval. This is where LICKD comes into play. Paul Sampson is a former professional and international rugby player for Wasps, Bath, London Welsh, England & England 7s. Before his rugby career took off he was a successful sprinter, winning the 100m school boy championship at 17 years of age and once even beat famous sprinter Dwain Chambers in a race. His life after rugby has led him to become a successful wellbeing and transformative coach and he is also on the advisory board for looseheadz a mental health charity. He has recently started a new company Beacon Global Sports Welfare to support athletes with their well-being and human performance drawing on his vast experience as a sportsman and now coach. In this conversation we talk about Paul's career in the game and his life since retirement as a coach. We discuss the difference between Personal Training and Coaching and also how to tap into the deeper aspect of what drives people and how they can tap into their potential.
