Steve answers a question on whether he has ever been part of a team that played Daddy Ball and whether he would ever coach his own team. We also discuss the impact of Cooperstown requiring vaccinations and teams promoting fake championships. A lot of good stuff in this one.
We need to stop using this term "Daddy Ball." We dive into why it doesn't matter your background. What matters is your ability to learn and study the game. To Coach or Not to Coach Your KidIn this episode we talk about Daddy Ball (or Mommy Ball), which is one of the most controversial topics in the youth baseball world! Daddy Ball occurs when the coach favors their own kid (or is perceived to favor their kid) over others at the detriment of the team.We share thoughts from a few listeners who have coached their own kids, and talk about our own brushes with Daddy Ball as parents, coaches' wives, and even as an umpire. We discuss our opinions about what it takes to successfully coach your own child (and why it may be a disaster) and mention our favorite qualities in good coaches.Keep up with Moms and Baseball on our website: https://momsandbaseball.comFollow us on Facebook, Instagram, and TwitterJoin our Facebook group, Parents and BaseballOn Deck: We will talk to Derek Hurley, a former Division 1 and Minor League baseball player, about his baseball career as well as what he is up to now--including a brand new company specializing in one-of-a-kind batting glove protection technology.Previous Episodes Mentioned:025: Semi-Pro Pitcher Lennon Gwizdala012: Lale Esquivel - Coach of the Best 12u Team in the Nation020: From 10u to the Big Ten: MI Select Coach on 2020 College Commits for Entire Team021 DadsTakeover - College Recruiting008: Moms and Politics in Youth BaseballUpdate on Mitch Jebb (020: From 10u to the Big Ten: MI Select Coach on 2020 College Commits for Entire Team):https://msuspartans.com/sports/baseball/roster/mitch-jebb/10933https://twitter.com/d1baseball/status/1370132696765173765?s=20

It is that time of year, but not the politics you were thinking. This topic was suggested by one of our listeners, because she thought that newbie parents may be surprised to learn about all the politics that can be involved in even a small town youth baseball team. In this episode, we discuss the politics in rec and travel baseball, daddy ball, and how adults get in the way of kids just wanting to play ball and have fun. We have two guest interviews, one by Jo Ignatius from Mississippi, and the other is Amy Keim from Texas. We also have one baseball mom who wrote in her story for us to read but wanted to stay anonymous. Thanks for listening!momsandbaseball.weebly.com

Episode 1 of what we hope to be many more. This is the start to the Bennie Baseball podcast. In this episode we sit down with our good friend/ Stateline Baseball President, Ryan Rydell, to discuss the differences between being a dad who coaches vs. being Daddy Ball.
This was a really insightful talk with Raymond who is a parent who is also a coach. Raymond talks about setting expectations from day one and establishing himself as a coach first and parent second. Listen as he gives some great advice as to how to have that conversation with the rest of the parents, but also goes into a situation where there was an issue with another parent coach on the team and what he did to remedy the situation. Tom grew up playing baseball and has undoubtedly passed along his passion for the game to his sons. We chat about the teams he does coach and what he brings to the team and what other players can learn from athletes who have a real passion for the game. Listen as we get into who coaches his sons' travel baseball teams and why he feels this is a great situation, even though they are also parent coaches. It is estimated that 85% of youth baseball coaches have their own child on their teams. Everyone is familiar of the term ‘Daddy-Ball’. Dave talks about several items that can help coaches successfully maneuver the coach/parent-child/player scenario and avoid the ‘Daddy-Ball’ label. Want to have a healthy relationship while coaching your child? Here arr some ideas to make it work. Dave talks about playing for his own Dad while in college and how he made it work.
In the third episode of Daddy Ball we speak with Bob who also coached his son up until a point, and then stepped back from coaching to let a paid coach take the reigns. Bob wanted to spend some time as a parent enjoying the game, and allowing another coach to step into his previous role helped him enjoy the game with his son more. Bob gives some great advice about letting your child in on the decision making process of trying out and joining a team. At the end of the day a very small percentage of players progress to College or Pro baseball, so if they are comfortable and having fun that is the most important part of the decision. If you want to be a part of a future episode email sean@sport-travel.com with contact information i.e., phone, email, social media, etc.. and what topic you'd like to discuss. In the second episode of Daddy Ball, we sit down with Robbie who offers his views from both sides of this topic. On one hand his son plays for a paid coach team in a relatively new organization, and after some evaluations and tryouts trusted his gut and went with this particular coach with this new organization. Robbie also coaches a league team, and is hyper aware of the potential issues that could come up, so in all likelihood is too hard on his son to avoid any conflicts. This is a fantastic situation where we get to know a coach who is aware of what is being said out there and does his very best to help everyone on the field develop a love for the game, rather than worrying about who is playing where and how much playing time they are getting. Welcome to Daddy Ball, an in depth look at the issue of parent coaches in youth sports. There are a ton of warnings from fellow parents regarding parent coaches and the problems that can arise from this situation, but I wanted to see how much of an issue this really was and if it was something to really be concerned about. In this episode, Martin raises a lot of good points and examines the situation from multiple angles. He has two sons who play baseball at different levels and discusses each of their situations and why a parent coach, even if they are biased, may not be an issue for you at all. Nothing kills a team faster than playing DADDY BALL leaders must not succumb to the pressure of having people placed in their organizations. Promotions must be earned and teammates must be placed in positions by capability. When leaders start playing DADDY BALL and place individuals in positions that they are not qualified for the team will revolt. I don't know how many times i have seen it in sports. A coach has a kid that stinks, but places him is the most prominent position because his daddy wants him there. The team suffers, the coach loses credibility and the team fails. The same thing happens in organizations. Be careful and don't fall for DADDY BALL LEADERSHIP. BE BOLD Dave
