Mother's Day is coming. And if you've had a few Mother's Days that end with you getting into bed feeling totally wiped out and resentful, this podcast episode is for you. I'm talking all about how to enjoy Mother's Day. Mother's Day has a way of ending up the OPPOSITE of ideal for most moms. A lot of times moms spend Mother's Day cleaning up the kitchen after a messy breakfast in bed, followed by a lunch that's focused on their mother or mother-in-law, and then capped off by a rushed take-out dinner with all the regular bedtime routine shenanigans. It's time to take back Mother's Day! I'm just going to say it - Mother's Day is FOR moms! I want to help you design a Mother's Day that actually feels good to you. One where you get what you truly want from the day. How do you get what you want on Mother's Day? Usually, two things keep moms from creating their ideal day: guilt and not asking for what they want. I'm sharing tips to get past them both. You also need to get clear on what your ideal day looks like and make a plan for it. This will look very different based on your daily life, family structure and what feels right to you. I also know that some of us are sitting with feelings of grief and loss on Mother's Day. If this is you, give yourself a little tenderness and consider this when designing your day. This Mother's Day, I send my love to all the mothers. For the first mothers, the forever mothers, the motherless mothers, the childless mothers, and the not-yet mothers. I love you. I see you. And I'm wishing you YOUR most ideal Mother's Day yet. You'll Learn:Steps for creating your ideal Mother's Day How to process the “Mother's Day Hangover” of disappointment, resentment or sadness on Monday morning Previous Episodes Mentioned:https://www.calmmamacoaching.com/blog/pause-reset-your-emotions (Episode 9: Pause and Reset Your Emotions) Connect With Me:Follow me on https://www.instagram.com/darlynnchildress/ (Instagram )@darlynnchildress or https://www.facebook.com/calmmamacoaching (Facebook )@calmmamacoaching Join http://www.calmmamacoaching/school (Calm Mama School) https://www.calmmamacoaching.com/site/workwithme (Book a call) In a few weeks I'm teaching a free workshop called “Plan a Summer With Kids You Actually Enjoy” It's 3 days of LIVE teaching and coaching where you will learn exactly how to turn a moment around when everyone is hot, grumpy, tired, underslept, and oversugared, so you can enjoy your kids this summer!! How can you practically slow down without opting out during the holidays? What does it look like to create a sustainable pace, and where do you even start? I'm so glad you asked. In this interview, Jodi shares with us: What stands in our way as we move toward slow living A simple process to help you figure out what's important to you And -- my personal favorite -- how to say “no” without actually saying “no.” I love how Jodi said that checklists are okay and we can add slowing down to them and how she reminded us to invite people into the slowing down process so we're not doing it alone. Do you ever feel fleh? “Fleh” is a completely made-up word in our house used to describe when Ryan or I feel off. We use it when there's nothing big going on, no major life changes, but there's still a sadness that's settled over our souls. What do we do when all doesn't feel merry and bright? In this episode, we're walking through: Where we typically look to determine what's rumbling in our souls causing us to feel off The “if only” statements we beat ourselves up with And where God is in the midst of all our mess. When we feel off, we look for the source, and there are two places we typically look. We look internally. We look externally. But in our looking and reflecting, we may fall into one of these three “if only” traps. We tell ourselves: If only, I could name what's troubling me. We tell ourselves: If only, I had more faith. We tell ourselves: If only, I was more grateful. Here are two truths to remember when you don't feel merry and bright: We are humans, and God is God. God doesn't expect humans to hold themselves together. That's His job. Key Quotes The God we love loves us back. He is always with us. He is One of mystery. And He alone holds all things together…even our hurting hearts. Even a weak faith rests on a mighty Savior who holds us in His strong hands. Perhaps our lack of feeling like ourselves is our unsettled soul's way of speaking to us. Our blessings do not negate the sadness we feel. Join Angela in this solo episode: Ahimsa, Ayurveda, Veganism and the Gray Space. This episode comes from countless conversations with yoga students, fellow practitioners, those on social media, in person classes, etc. It's something Angela has been curious about in her own life since beginning to practice Ayurveda 14 years ago, and she has been learning and getting to the root of what the teachings do say. There is some pushback from those who view Ayurveda and yoga through a particular lens. This is a hot topic for many people. Wherever you stand, this is the Gray Space: where Angela chooses to live without being rigid and black & white in her thinking no matter what it is. It's important to her to zoom out and see things from all perspectives and empathize. This conversation was a former place of shame for Angela, and why she feels like she HAS to talk about it. This episode encourages you to look at context when you're in conversations with people about Ayurveda, and ask things such as: Who are you talking to? Where are they at in their life? How can you offer empathy to those who see masks + vaccines differently than you do as well as how to teach your kids empathy in this craziness? If you've ever felt judged, defensive, or misunderstood because of your COVID choices, OR if you've ever wondered why we're all so hateful to each other online and in-person about masks and vaccines and wonder how we can treat others with kindness, OR if you've never felt more polarized from your family, friends, church, school district, or nation than at this moment in history, you're in the right place. In this episode, we'll break down: What it's like be a human right now What's going on beneath the surface And practical ways to offer and teach empathy in an unkind world. How to practice empathy in your real life Practice self-compassion. Before you react to a hurtful comment or passive-aggressive remark, ask yourself if what you're about to say is true, kind, and helpful. Challenge yourself to be kind twice a day. Talk with people who have a different perspective than you do. Pray. Pray for those with whom you disagree, that they will be blessed. Ask for forgiveness when you start going into self-righteous, judgy mode. How to teach empathy to your kids Your kids need to know emotions. They should be able to identify their own emotions and the emotions of others. Your child needs to know who she is. Give your kids a good empathetic role model to follow. Talk to your kids about what's going on. Share the reasons why your family has made the decisions you have. Help your kids look for similarities in others who disagree with them. We must ask God for the strength to serve, the power to listen, and the grace to understand the life of another. Key Quotes Do not discount your weariness or the fact that your brain hurts or that you feel a bit more on edge. We are angry because we are fearful, and our fear wants to be heard and acknowledged, but we have no outlet for it. We are Kingdom people. Not anti-maskers or pro-vaxx-ers, but Kingdom people who live in the unshakable kingdom of God. We need Jesus to fill in the gaps when we feel angry and misunderstood. Loving others means listening without judgment. Mentioned in the Podcast The FCC requires that I tell you that I'm an Amazon Affiliate, which means I earn a bit of commission on each sale. To Coach or Not to Coach Your KidIn this episode we talk about Daddy Ball (or Mommy Ball), which is one of the most controversial topics in the youth baseball world! Daddy Ball occurs when the coach favors their own kid (or is perceived to favor their kid) over others at the detriment of the team.We share thoughts from a few listeners who have coached their own kids, and talk about our own brushes with Daddy Ball as parents, coaches' wives, and even as an umpire. We discuss our opinions about what it takes to successfully coach your own child (and why it may be a disaster) and mention our favorite qualities in good coaches.Keep up with Moms and Baseball on our website: https://momsandbaseball.comFollow us on Facebook, Instagram, and TwitterJoin our Facebook group, Parents and BaseballOn Deck: We will talk to Derek Hurley, a former Division 1 and Minor League baseball player, about his baseball career as well as what he is up to now--including a brand new company specializing in one-of-a-kind batting glove protection technology.Previous Episodes Mentioned:025: Semi-Pro Pitcher Lennon Gwizdala012: Lale Esquivel - Coach of the Best 12u Team in the Nation020: From 10u to the Big Ten: MI Select Coach on 2020 College Commits for Entire Team021 DadsTakeover - College Recruiting008: Moms and Politics in Youth BaseballUpdate on Mitch Jebb (020: From 10u to the Big Ten: MI Select Coach on 2020 College Commits for Entire Team):https://msuspartans.com/sports/baseball/roster/mitch-jebb/10933https://twitter.com/d1baseball/status/1370132696765173765?s=20

Ep. 84 of the Grace Enough Podcast, Sandy Cullum joins me to talk about cultivating a prayer life through thanksgiving, quiet and Scripture prayers. We also discuss her journey of doubt and darkness and how she has learned God never left her. www.graceenoughpodcast.com Questions Sandy and I Discussed: (4:19) Tell us a little bit about your childhood and how you came to know Jesus. (836) Fast forward to being a young mom living back in Florida. What were your days like and how were you involved in ministry during that time? (15:03) Something I have said time and time again is, "I believe your prayers for me and Sam long before I was a part of your family literally changed my life and continues to do so." Share with our listeners a few tips on cultivating a prayer life. (30:22) You were in the middle of your "dark night of the soul" when Sam and I got married, but what I have heard about the Sandy prior to that season in your life is Jesus was truly your best friend and it was obvious. Share a little about what happened that led to your season of wrestling with all that you believed to be true. (1:03:50) What does your relationship with Jesus look like today? Quotes to Remember: "People have asked me how did you become such a woman of prayer? And I was like, because I couldn't handle life. I couldn't handle life. I was desperate." "I had an advantage then, because we didn't have much money. And even though I have this full library now, I had almost no books, then. I had no internet and having the internet alone makes is this huge resource that's there that you can turn to first. Instead of turning to God first." "I would say that practicing daily Thanksgiving, although people see it as a separate spiritual practice, is a huge part of prayer." "I needed to keep my mind on what I did have, instead of what I didn't have and thought I needed. I needed that practice of writing down in journals every day, things I was thankful for, and being able to see it in front of my eyes. You might think that's not prayer, but if you're keeping any kind of a thanksgiving paper on your wall or a log of some sort, or you have it as a daily practice, that's prayer." "Cultivate quiet. That's what I see as by far the biggest challenge for people today in our culture, social media, all the streaming that's available, our phones constantly going off. Prayer is as much listening and hearing what God is saying to us, as it is what we're saying to God. And if our phone is constantly going off, then we don't have...enough quiet space in our life, to let Him speak to us." "When you pray those kinds of prayers for people, God changes your heart, and you're able to then accept things that may come into your life or their life that you wouldn't have asked for." "If you just get in the habit of reading Scripture out loud, then you'll find yourself more easily moving into the Scripture prayers that God's Spirit is directing you to." "One night when I was coming home from the Bible study, I remember it was raining and I remember I just started almost shouting, 'God, I want them to know you. I want them to know you like I know you. And I was praying for my husband. I was praying for Kyle and his wife, Michelle, and I was praying for Sam and I was praying for his future wife. And when I prayed that prayer, I knew that reality was changing and that my whole family as a result of that prayer was stepping into or through a different door." "I was writing Father, I need you to show me the Scriptures I need now. I feel so lost, so unable to hear you or help my family through my intercession for them. Father, Who can I talk with about this? Who will understand and point me and push me in the right direction? Save me, save us, Lord, save us from ourselves." "Prayers that I prayed back in 2003 and 2004 and 5, in 2006 God was holding in that bowl. You know that bowl of incense, which is the prayers of the saints, to release them later in my life, I wrote as late as March 29, 2006, 'I wonder if I will ever wholeheartedly believe in the God I used to know again? If my thoughts about God will ever again resonate with certainty rather than sound hollow and empty, like a whisper of a long ago dream? Oh, God have mercy on me. And so those prayers that I had prayed for Sam and his wife, I couldn't pray during this time. But God was holding them from the time when I had been able to pray them, and He was working them in your lives, because He's not bound by time and He's at the center of all time and sees it all." "God was so faithfully patient with me...David asked me..., 'Sandy, are you a Christian?' I would think about it, I would answer him, 'I don't know if I'm a Christian, but I know that God hasn't left me' and I couldn't make rational sense of that with Scripture." "I was having a fresh look at the cross from within the lens of Isaiah 53. Not just that our sin that He took upon Himself, but our suffering that He took upon Himself, and that the suffering took upon Himself was largely the result of God's respecting our free will." Scripture References: Revelation 21: The River of Life Ephesians 6: Spiritual Warfare Ephesians 3:14-21 "...may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ" (18) Psalm 103 Nehemiah 1 John 17Jesus prays for His disciples and all believers. Isaiah 50: 4 The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed. Today, we are celebrating our return from spending time with our children for the summer and so much has happened since we were last with you in real-time! So, in this show, we are going to recap some of our topics from our previous episodes, and also catch you up on our summers! We’re also going to be sharing some of the exciting things we have in store for you this fall. So, sit back, relax and join us for this conversation so we can catch up! Show Highlights: There are vast discrepancies in state education standards for teaching about slavery. We discussed this in episode 18 as it relates to who controls history. Our societal structures have been impacted by slavery, whether schools want to teach about it or not. Texas now teaches more than 5 million students that the Civil War wasn’t just about slavery, but rather it was more about economics and sectionalism. It doesn’t make sense that social studies is required for all students, but it doesn’t have the same national standards for what is taught as math and science do. Kids in the US learn about slavery differently depending on where they grow up. Most schools begin talking about African Americans in US history at the point that they are already slaves. When you begin at the point that someone is already dehumanized, you really never see them through a different lens. In order to see them as human beings, you have to start the journey before they were dehumanized. As a country, we still struggle with issues such as kneeling athletes, criminal justice reform, birthright citizenship, and Confederate statutes because we haven’t been taught the context of how those things tie directly into slavery. Plantation tours have taken on the task of educating the public about slavery, but the public is pushing back and saying they don’t want to have to see the impact of slavery included in the plantation tours. We don’t need to take slavery personally and get offended that it is an ugly part of our history. There are some books that you can use to help teach your children about equality. We’ve linked to the ones we recommend below. In Ep 11 and 12, we shared the real history of the KKK. Those shows are definitely worth listening to if you haven’t had a chance to catch those yet. It took Paypal six days to suspend an account raising money for a branch of the KKK. Even after it was flagged by an anti-bigotry campaigner, it still took almost a week for Paypal to take action. Your right to freedom of speech as laid out in the US Constitution ends when it infringes on others. Private companies, like Facebook, Paypal, Instagram, etc. have terms and conditions for the use of their platforms, but they can’t always catch everything that’s inappropriate. Remember the discussion we had about Stapleton, CO wanting change their name because even though Stapleton was a former Mayor of the town, he was also a KKK member, and used that fact to help him get elected. The town voted overwhelmingly (65% to 35%) NOT to change the name. Our first listener suggested guest, Caster Semenya, has lost her appeal to participate in her sport without taking drugs to alter her body’s natural hormonal state. You can learn more about her story by listening to episode 22. We had an episode about the citizenship question possibly being added to the census, and while that did not happen, we now have the Trump administration making it more difficult to obtain birthright citizenship. It’s been estimated that the changes to the birthright citizenship rule would affect only about 100 people annually, but for such a small impact why go down this slippery slope? We talked about the separation of migrant children at the border, and while that issue hasn’t completely resolved, the administration is now ending protection for migrant children getting lifesaving medical treatment in the US. It’s hard to understand how we can send sick children back to their home country and deny them medical treatment, knowing that decision will be a death sentence for them. It’s really heartbreaking. Find out our individual lessons learned and takeaways from spending this summer with our children. This includes the impact of visiting Hiroshima and the kid’s reaction to it and how taking kids to countries where they didn’t speak the language impacted them. This Fall, we have so many exciting plans for the show! You’ll have to listen to get a sneak peek! Blue Ocean Faith is known for many things. But its take on M. Scott Peck's theory of spiritual and emotional development is right up there. Is it helpful to think about spiritual/emotional growth through the lens of stages? Is it--as is sometimes charged--elitist? Dave Schmelzer, Christina Roberts and Ryan Bauers have a lively discussion about how this continues to have leverage in their lives and those of their friends. If you would like to continue the conversation about the stages theory, email mail@blueoceanfaith.org and we will follow up with an online format to continue chatting.
