How can the U.S. sustain for the long term what has been a massive increase in infrastructure investment since 2021, following the passage of the Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act and Inflation Reduction Act? That has been the question at the heart of this year's Infrastructure Week in Washington D.C., where the ASCE published its appropriately titled report ‘Bridging the Gap', warning that the Federal Government must maintain the same baseline of funding after these two giant infrastructure bills expire in 2026. And that all levels of government must collaborate with the private sector to further support the country's vital needs. Jon Phillips, chief executive of GIIA, met up with Marsia Geldert-Murphey, president of the ASCE,  in Washington D.C. to talk about progress so far, and what needs to happen next.

May in Washington D.C., means United For Infrastructure Week. ASCE marked the occasion by releasing a new economic study called Bridging the Gap, analyzing the additional potential costs to both the U.S. GDP and the American taxpayer if IIJA levels of infrastructure investment aren't continued beyond 2026. Infrastructure Week also is a great opportunity for collaboration. Case in point: ASCE and the Global Infrastructure Investor Association, an organization representing the private sector on a global scale. is the most underutilized space 0:27 in the home 0:28 now I use my garage to put my cars in I 0:31 use it for storage 0:33 I use it to hide stuff 0:37 so tell us about what that means it's 0:40 the most underutilized space in the home 0:43 yeah so whenever it comes to the square 0:45 footage of a home the garage isn't 0:48 included unless it's been permissed to 0:51 be a livable space so whenever you go 0:54 into a home and it says it's 1500 square 0:56 feet uh 2 000 square feet a thousand 0:59 square feet whatever it is that's not 1:01 including the garage so when people want 1:05 to consider this I mean the average 1:06 one-car garage is around three to four 1:09 hundred square feet and then a two-car 1:11 garage it's like 720 1:14 that's a lot of square footage that's a 1:17 lot of square footage that you didn't 1:18 consider in your home and a lot of 1:21 people they just got a Pandora they just 1:24 park their cars in there they use it as 1:25 storage but there's so many options now 1:27 to where I mean if you want to go to the 1:30 city and get it all done up and make it 1:33 to a livable face yeah you can do that 1:34 but 1:36 with the storage options and the options 1:39 that we have with doors and epoxy floors 1:42 that we have in like the Las Vegas and 1:43 Phoenix markets you can make that 720 1:47 square foot of dead space into something 1:50 that actually adds value and adds space 1:53 to your home to utilize 1:56 yeah you know one could argue it is 1:58 livable for the guy who wants to go out 2:00 in his garage with the epoxy floor and 2:03 his little workshop and there's 2:05 something at least for a guy I think the 2:08 garage right it's it's their space so 2:12 you know they've got the pegboard up on 2:14 the wall with the tools and they've got 2:16 the cabinets and they've got the floor 2:17 they have a TV probably so the game is 2:19 on they put the lighting up and it's 2:22 really kind of their man cave outside 2:24 isn't it yeah and probably whenever it 2:27 comes to man caves probably my favorite 2:29 type of garage door makeover or redo is 2:34 a lot of people you have a seven foot 2:36 door well a lot of people have vaulted 2:38 ceilings where these ceilings go up 10 2:40 12 feet and then you have a door that 2:42 kicks over but when it's up in the open 2:44 position it's just kind of 2:46 right there in the center of the garage 2:48 because the ceiling's so high so then we 2:51 have high lift conversions and high lift 2:53 doors so instead of going up only about 2:55 seven and a half eight feet we can get 2:57 that thing as close to the ceiling as 3:00 possible and back to the man cave a lot 3:02 of people like to do this because they 3:04 want to make it into a home gym or golf 3:06 simulator or any one of those things and 3:08 now the door goes up high enough to 3:10 where they can fit all that in there and 3:12 then turn it into the dream man cave 3:13 that they've always wanted because they 3:15 have all the space now 3:16 you know that's fantastic so A1 started 3:19 with Tommy mellow years ago as really a 3:22 garage door repair company replacement 3:25 and now you guys just are the garage 3:29 yeah the entirety of it because now we 3:31 we know how to make as much space as 3:33 possible with your door but also with 3:36 the epoxy floors we're also super big 3:39 into overhead and wall mount storage so 3:42 in that storage we're able to do ceiling 3:44 mounts there are traditional things 3:46 you've seen you know nice and clean 3:47 hanging down from the ceiling but we're 3:49 also working on motorized versions to 3:51 where you don't even have to get up on a 3:53 ladder or load anything up you can just 3:55 have it come down to the ground all 3:57 controlled by your phone you load up the 3:59 Christmas decorations or maybe the 4:01 memorabilia that you want to keep nice 4:02 and then just click of a button it goes 4:04 all the way back up to the ceiling and 4:06 then instead of just the old khaki 4:08 particle board shelves on the metal 4:12 framing that looks industrial now we got 4:14 these super Sleek wall mount ones where 4:16 you can slide shelves and hooks off and 4:18 it just anything that's involved with 4:21 the garage from the floor to the walls 4:22 to the overhead storage to the garage 4:24 door A1 does it all 4:27 yeah that's I'm doing good Check pro how you been? I'm living the dream. Thank you so much. So I understand that you can help people homeowners find the perfect spring for their garage door. And you tell me that there's this newer technology today. It's not just some math that you guys used years ago or the real good guys, just take a look and say, hey, I know what spring you need and they pull out of the truck and put it in. You actually have uh an app for this. Yeah. Uh before getting to the app to kind of kind of explain. So springs are rated in, in IP P T and you can imagine that a door comes in a bunch of different weights and sizes and that weight is contributed to the type of rollers, the hinges, the struts door supports the type of track that it's in the type of drums that carry the cable. There's a lot of variables and then when it comes to the spring, springs are essentially the coiled wire and there's a lot of variables, but there's the wire size, the internal diameter And the overall length. Now you can do a bunch of math to find this out. This is how I was trained when I first started. So figuring out the wire size, counting 20 coils over, maybe you get a spring ruler like this. So you put this in there, you count 20 coils over, then it gives you the wire size. That's a quick way. Or you can do it in an old school method way to where you measure 10 coils, do a little bit of math. And then you can find out the wire size and then we gotta somehow on a spring when it's broken, it's very easy to find the inside diameter, right? But whenever a spring just isn't holding tension anymore from the outside. Well, I want to find the inside diameter, not the outside. So then we gotta do math again to figure out the outside diameter. Take that minus the actual spring gauge itself. So then we'll be able to find the ID. Well, and then we got to find out the weight of the door, right. So we gotta weigh the door. So when doing this, we gotta get a bathroom scale or a livestock scale. And then what we gotta do is we gotta take the tension and put it back off the spring and let all the weight sit there and, and by the way to use this. You also have to have a winning bar and actual tools to do this and you gotta make sure that you don't throw the cable and completely throw the door sideways whenever you do this. And, but that here's a public service announcement. Homeowners do not do this yourself. No, no, not at all. This is, should only be done by a professional, but there's a, there's a lot of steps in this and then you gotta take length divided by the wire size. So you'll find the total active coils. You take the total active coils minus the unused coils to find the active ones. And then you take the constant when, then you take that divided by the active coils and then you'll figure out the IP P T and then you need to find that M IP, which is the max inch pounds, you know, divided by the IP P T. So you can figure out how many turns are on. It gets complicated. Well, now it's on an app. Wow. Now it's all in an app from service Spring Corp. Uh, they have the S S C app to where we can just put in door data and it tells us exactly. So no more writing it on paper in the human error. It tells us exactly the total IP P T needed for that door. Now, here's where it benefits the client. I come to a lot of doors And I weigh every door that I go to, every, everyone at a one does, the door should weigh less than £5 on the ground. Typically, we don't want, the motor can maybe pull up to 10. But once we start getting above that, your motor's life is gonna go down from the wear and tear on it. So I go to the door, it weighs about 20-40 lbs on the ground. And then I'm like, hey, we might want to take a look at these springs and they say, oh no, we just had those springs replaced a year ago. Ok. So I look at it and it's the wrong spring. So now as a homeowner, we're in this awkward situation to where I know because I can do the math and I have the app and I have to look at you and I have to tell you it's the wrong spring, but you just had it replaced a year ago. So, how are you supposed to trust me? So, how about instead of trying to break down everything it takes to find the IP P T that your door needs and the IP P T that the spring is capable of. I have it in this app where I can show you really quick to put in your specific door data and show you that, that spring is wrong and the correct springs that should be on the door. So it doesn't, don't take my word for it. Anymore. I'm gonna show you in this app. So that's why I can take technicians from this company and we're right. Every single time there's no guessing game, there's no double work and then you can check our work to make sure that the right springs are on the door every time. And I didn't, really can't think of anything more valuable than that and transparent. I agree. It's kind of like a navigation app today. You don't have to pull out the map or say, let me draw you the map because that's what you guys used to do. When you had to figure the size of the spring. You had to basically use your own experience and so forth. Like drawing a map or pulling a map out. Now, we don't use maps, we don't draw diagrams. We use apps. So if someone says, how do you get from point A to point B and you pull out a navigation app, people are gonna believe it because it's like it's there. Yeah, same thing right there. There's no guessing game anymore. Uh A lot of human error, uh labor hours are cut down completely because it's one shot. And at a one garage door, we're kind of in the business of fixing a door one time. Yeah. Do it right. The first time we don't like to piece it together, we don't like to play the guessing game. We just want it done to where you don't have to see us ever again. Unless you want to, maybe you like the technician so much. You want them to come over for dinner or the holidays, which is completely fine. That's what we like. Yeah, a one garage door service. Fantastic company Jon. good so 0:59 tell us what happens when we hit these 1:01 extremes 1:02 right so Springs metal uh hot oil 1:05 tempered there's galvanized but at the 1:07 end of the day the base is metal and 1:10 you'll have a spring and maybe it's a 1:12 little bit out of its cycle life it's a 1:13 little bit older and just that that last 1:16 straw that broke the camel's back is 1:18 that fluctuation in weather whether it 1:20 goes from hot to cold or cold to hot 1:22 that's just the last piece that it takes 1:24 and then bang hear that loud noise in 1:27 the garage you don't know what it was 1:29 until you can't open the door you know 1:32 that's just it that's a Telltale sign if 1:34 you hear a bang in your garage and your 1:37 kids aren't playing with firecrackers 1:38 and your husband's not in there with the 1:39 gun it's likely right it's likely the 1:44 spring because it makes a big bang and 1:46 when that happens please do not try to 1:48 move your door you really can't it's 1:50 very heavy isn't it yeah it's super 1:52 heavy especially if you're on like a 1:54 single spring system then we don't have 1:57 anything to lift up that door so 1:59 whenever you get the opportunity always 2:01 put two Springs on a door when you can 2:04 so let's talk about ways of keeping the 2:08 cool air out in the winter time and the 2:10 hot air out in the summertime with 2:13 weather seal and also kind of keeps the 2:15 critters out too right so whenever 2:17 starting with the spring snapping you're 2:20 going to get a garage door Tech out 2:21 there and it's going to come to a point 2:24 where yes it does it's the 3:55 number one curb appeal I mean I've had 3:58 I've installed new garage doors before 4:01 and then the Neighbors come home and 4:03 then they come up to me they see my van 4:05 it says garage door guy on it and they 4:08 come up to me and the house looks so 4:10 different they'll come up and be like 4:11 hey can I get your business card do you 4:13 paint paint houses did you just paint 4:14 their entire home it looks so different 4:16 I'm like no we just replaced the garage 4:19 door it's a huge huge deal 4:21 and John you know that can be done in a 4:24 matter of hours versus actually painting 4:28 a home which doesn't give you that brand 4:30 new garage door it doesn't give you that 4:32 feature so let's say that you just have 4:33 a builder grade garage door but now you 4:36 want some Dimension to it maybe you want 4:38 those external looking hinges like a 4:40 carriage house look maybe you want some 4:42 windows in it maybe you want an 4:43 insulated door let's talk a little bit 4:45 about that yeah so if we're going to 4:48 talk about reinvesting in your home and 4:50 giving your home like a facelift and it 4:53 comes upon insulation so some people you 4:55 have a Pandora which is just sheet metal 4:58 essentially that's stamped uh you have 5:00 vinyl backed uh which is just styrofoam 5:03 so it has this thing called polystyrene 5:05 it looks like this it's like the packing 5:08 foam for all your old Christmas stuff 5:10 that you keep in the garage that makes a 5:12 little snow globe every year when you 5:13 break it out to decorate these holidays 5:15 and then it's just got this nice little 5:18 glue that's it so this is just sitting 5:20 inside of a Pandora and the insulation 5:23 is is minimal it's not really do 5:25 anything because the typical exterior 5:27 wall if you got 2x4 exterior walls it's 5:30 going to range in between 13 to 15 R 5:33 value 5:34 but then you got two by six walls and 5:36 then that ranges from 19 to 21. so 5:39 just average home we're going to say is 5:41 around 13 on an exterior wall so that's 5:44 where we should start so that's going to 5:46 happen and polyurethane doors and you 5:49 can see in a polyurethane door it's an 5:51 injected foam and it fills all the 5:53 cracks and crevices in there and it 5:55 expands the structural rigidity the 5:57 insulation value the quietness because 6:00 it's heavy so if you get some nice nylon 6:02 rollers you get some good hinges we get 6:04 it up on a maintenance plan you're never 6:06 even going to hear that thing so 6:08 whenever you're picking do you want to 6:10 spend a little bit of money on something 6:12 that you're going to have to spend more 6:15 money down the line because you're just 6:18 getting a product that warps and shapes 6:20 and doesn't do anything and your water 6:23 heater you got a washer to dryer out in 6:25 the garage or do you want to invest a 6:27 little bit more and have like a 6:28 bulletproof door and essentially if your 6:31 garage is sealed and you have a good 6:33 insulated door we have a good trim and 6:36 weather seal and bottom rubber because 6:37 it doesn't matter how thick the door is 6:39 if I got all four corners of it exposed 6:42 to the outside it's not doing anything 6:44 but if I have good seal good 6:45 polyurethane 6:47 you should be able to open your man 6:49 dwarf to your kitchen or whatever you 6:51 have it and have it the same temperature 6:52 as your house 6:54 yeah it's uh really makes a big 6:57 difference I have a three-car garage and 6:59 both of my garage doors I've got a 7:01 double garage and a single and 7:04 years ago I replaced my 18 year old 7:08 garage doors that were barely working 7:11 with insulated doors that have the glass 7:15 in it the windows it with the camera hook up so you 4:21 don't have to get a whole new garage 4:22 door operator if you're not in the 4:24 market for that we can just get a simple 4:25 camera fix that you can set anywhere in 4:28 your garage and I've even seen people 4:29 use this by their front door instead of 4:31 a ring camera it just depends on what 4:32 you want to do and you can get multiple 4:34 ones and set them throughout the house 4:35 and it's all conveniently in one portion 4:38 of my Q app lighting's a big issue that 4:41 some people have especially if you have 4:43 an older model that doesn't take LEDs 4:45 that might interfere with the remotes so 4:47 we have these portable lights that we 4:49 can sit around it's about 1500 lumens in 4:52 it and you can hook it up and you can do 4:53 light control and everything like that 4:55 so when you get that camera we can light 4:57 up the garage you know lights camera 4:59 action so we can actually see what's 5:00 going on in there and it's kind of 5:02 Limitless on the number that you can put 5:04 it on these and one of my favorite 5:06 things is that LiftMaster is actually 5:08 partnered with Yale uh they're kind of 5:10 an auto lock company and they do a lot 5:12 of security well now they have an auto 5:14 smart for your man door whether it's to 5:16 your garage or your front door and then 5:19 that's included in the MyQ app as well 5:21 so you can even set to your own front 5:22 door not just the garage so it's not 5:24 just homeowners with garages right if 5:26 you've got a detached garage and that 5:28 doesn't really pertain to your house we 5:29 can also get this set up so this is a 5:32 big big player when it comes to WalMart 5:34 delivery for those groceries 5:36 everything's integrated it all works 5:39 well 5:40 the delivery guy can drop off your 5:43 package and you can see it on video it's 5:46 it's all recorded so you don't have to 5:48 worry about anything and it's just so 5:50 much easier we're all from A1 Garage Door Service to join me on the program today to talk about something that we just don't think a lot about and that's the garage door opener also called the garage door operator and John is going to Enlighten us about the differences the importance of the balance door and so forth John welcome to the program Hey Joe how's it going thanks for having me back on it's great to have you here so the garage door operator or what some people call the garage door opener it's an important piece isn't it yes it is it's uh it's the the brain of the operations it's what automates your door to make it convenient from you from your car and nowadays even your phone to 1:04 where you don't have to get out and open 1:05 it manually you can just do it all at 1:07 the push of a button a lot of changes in 1:09 technology before we dive into that tell 1:12 everybody who's listening the importance 1:14 of the door being balanced first before 1:17 that garage door operator does its job 1:21 so a lot of people are under the 1:23 impression that the the operator is what 1:26 lifts the entire door and we've covered 1:29 this in other sections as well but it 1:31 just automates it that's all it does it 1:33 just tells the door to open and close a 1:37 good functioning door with good parts on 1:39 it that's balanced with springs at 1:40 proper tension good bearings drums 1:43 cables hinges rollers making sure the 1:46 door is installed Plumbing straight and 1:48 perfectly aligned if these things aren't 1:50 done then the operator is kind of 1:52 useless and people spend good money on 1:54 operators and to to have a door that's 1:57 lacking or faulty in any of these 1:59 mechanical functions uh you could be 2:02 just wasting your money and ruining the 2:03 motor 2:04 yeah absolutely I encourage people all 2:06 the time to get their doors maintained 2:09 on a regular basis to make sure 2:11 everything is bolted down properly 2:13 literally screwed down because things 2:14 can loosen up and to make sure that that 2:16 spring is wound properly that it's in 2:19 good shape everything's lubricated and 2:21 the balance is so key and this is 2:23 something we talk about John and the 2:25 average person can't really figure out 2:27 the proper balance you guys use 2:29 equipment to determine whether or not 2:31 any given door is properly imbalanced 2:33 and then once it is everything is nice 2:36 and straight and square and everything's 2:39 in balance that garage door without the 2:41 operator without it engaged should 2:44 simply go up and down with just your 2:45 finger it should just move nice and 2:47 easily because we don't want a lot of 2:49 wear and tear on that garage door 2:51 operator so once it's all balanced the 2:54 garage door operator does its job so 2:57 there's a lot of new technology today 2:59 you want to talk about the differences 3:01 and and the great options there are 3:03 right without nerding out too much the 3:05 most basic function now is obviously 3:07 moving up and down and those motors used 3:10 to be AC Motors so alternating current 3:12 the motors were a little bit big a 3:14 little bit louder and then slowly but 3:17 surely we're progressing over to DC 3:19 motors so that's direct current it's a 3:22 smaller motor but in the garage door 3:24 application it's actually more powerful 3:25 and the coolest thing about it is with a 3:27 DC motor you have higher speed function 3:31 and what that does for your garage doors 3:33 so when the door goes to lay on the 3:35 ground and shut as the speed option 3:37 where it slows down and Feathers the 3:39 door down and that's the same thing when 3:40 coming up so it's not this abrupt 3:43 stopped where the doors hit in the 3:44 ground so anytime that you can hear the 3:46 door closing and hitting the ground 3:48 that's not good that's a jolt to the 3:50 entire system and it's a wear on the 3:52 doors with these DC motors that are 3:54 coming out now it's nice and gentle 3:56 pulls the door gradually gets up to 3:58 speed so it still opens it just as fast 4:00 it's just at the very end of that 4:02 closing and the very end of that opening 4:04 it feathers it nice and neat and so your 4:07 door is going to last a lot longer 4:08 sounds a lot safer too for some reason 4:10 it just sounds safer is there any safety 4:13 benefits to this as well yeah so with 4:15 the slow start and stop without geeking 4:17 out too much so the travel modules and 4:20 the RPMs whenever they go into an AC 4:23 motor they're hard set they slip they 4:25 wear out over time with the DC motor 4:27 it's all plugged in and it's all 4:29 electronic so it's a lot more sensitive 4:31 and safe so things such as forces which 4:33 is what the door is wanting to push or 4:35 pull through that's a lot more 4:37 fine-tuned which is the biggest part 4:38 that can be the difference in between 4:40 hurting things that are at the bottom of 4:42 the door or the operator pulling the 4:44 door apart on the way up so it is 4:46 significantly safer times have changed 4:48 from when I was a young boy and I would 4:50 have my friend go over to the button 4:52 inside the garage and say okay press it 4:55 and as that door opened up I would rise 4:57 off the ground I was six seven years old 4:59 and I don't encourage Us by the way okay 5:02 so do not do this the reason why I bring 5:04 this up is back in the day for whatever 5:08 reason that garage door was able to lift 5:09 me up those garage doors were pretty 5:11 heavy too they were all wood today a lot 5:13 of the garage doors are actually a lot 5:14 lighter made of a metal type material so 5:16 things have changed a lot so do not grab 5:18 the garage door I don't have anything in 5:21 the way don't attach anything to it let 5:23 it go up and down easily and have it 5:25 balanced I recommend that you have a one 5:28 garage door service on a regular basis 5:31 come out to your home 5:33 regardless whether you have one or three 5:35 or four garage doors have them maintain 5:37 it on a regular basis because when they 5:39 come out and they lubricate it and they 5:41 tighten everything up and they basically 5:43 look at everything your garage door is 5:44 not only going to last longer but it's 5:46 going to be a lot safer you guys have a 5:51 great program that's not that expensive 5:52 for people to plug into where you guys 5:55 come out on a regular basis can you talk 5:57 a little bit about that yeah so we have 5:59 our worry-free membership and what that 6:01 is is garage doors need a maintenance 6:04 plan and we need experts to come out and 6:06 look at the door make sure everything's 6:07 okay we want it to be hassle-free for 6:09 our clients so we get on the membership 6:12 you get perks and discounts and safety 6:15 features such as surge protectors for 6:17 your operator maintenance plans as well 6:19 to keep it up to date and then also you 6:22 get discounts on any future work and 6:24 whether you have one door on your home 6:26 or 20 Doors which I haven't seen yet at 6:28 one single home we're going to take care 6:30 of all of them for 8.95 a month well you 6:32 apparently haven't been to Jay Leno home 6:34 so I don't know how many garage doors he 6:36 has but he's got a lot of cars I I do 6:39 know that 6:40 technology my cue that's a big thing 6:43 that people are getting involved with 6:44 now can you touch upon the MyQ system 6:47 yeah so the my queue is a Bluetooth and 6:51 Wi-Fi compatibility to where your 6:53 operator is hooked up to the Internet or 6:55 Wi-Fi of your home and then now you 6:57 control your garage door from anywhere 6:59 and it also has sensory on it to where 7:02 it can tell you if it's open or closed 7:03 and timed and stamped and the MyQ app is 7:06 perfect so you don't have to worry 7:08 anymore did I close the garage door 7:09 there's timers for that but you can 7:11 always check on it it'll give you alerts 7:13 you can know when your kids got home 7:15 from school if you're still working they 7:17 have camera options as well so you can 7:19 get a live video feed and a two-way 7:22 radio into the garage so that's super 7:24 fun and then also backup batteries as 7:28 well for in case the power goes out and 7:30 then probably my favorite feature is 7:33 probably the Amazon key that is so 7:36 Amazon can hook up to that one time they 7:39 don't step into your garage or anything 7:41 like that and they're able to drop off 7:43 packages straight into your garage and 7:46 then close the garage door and it's 7:47 complete secure no porch Pirates no 7:50 packages getting ruined from weather 7:52 your package is completely safe and a 7:54 secure dry place and who could ask for 7:57 anything better as far as Amazon 7:58 delivery what a complete package no pun 8:01 intended with the Amazon thing I'm 8:02 talking about the MyQ technology it's a 8:05 fantastic package all together even if 8:08 you have a garage door operator garage 8:10 door opener that's not that old it might 8:13 be a good time to swap it out because 8:15 you may have kind of a simple garage 8:18 door opener where you have a remote 8:19 control and yes you were able to sync it 8:22 into your automobile so you can just 8:24 press the button on the roof of your car 8:25 as you drive in some of us just have 8:28 that I mean that's it but when we can 8:30 talk back and forth when we can let the 8:33 package guy in from Amazon when we've 8:35 got cameras and we've got more safety 8:37 features it doesn't cost that much to 8:40 get a system like this installed uh John 8:43 could you share any of the costs at all 8:44 roughly of what it would cost to have a 8:47 system like MyQ installed in general 8:49 well the beautiful thing is my queue is 8:52 actually becoming the standard so you 8:55 can get it on the more economical grade 8:56 Motors or you can get it on a motor 8:59 that's going to last you for years to 9:01 come 9:03 so it doesn't really matter the budget 9:05 or the cost my queue is available 9:06 probably the coolest thing about MyQ as 9:09 well is also another problem is people 9:12 with security in their homes so people 9:14 don't like having remotes just out in 9:17 their garages in their cars they say 9:19 that that's a security risk and I agree 9:21 with them so if you have all of your 9:23 remotes just attached directly to your 9:25 phone which is attached at the hip you 9:28 don't have any remotes wandering around 9:29 you don't have to worry about losing 9:31 them you don't have to worry about 9:31 people stealing him and having access to 9:34 your home anymore it's all safe and 9:36 within your phone that's a good point I 9:39 control my thermostat and my lights and 9:41 a lot of other things with my phone may 9:43 as well do my garage door as well right 9:45 sync it up and John thank you so much 9:47 for joining me today here on the program 9:48 I really Episode 018 of *The Upful LIFE Podcast* returns with very special guest JON PHILLIPS, founder of Silverback Music, a management company based in Southern California. Jon is the former manager of Sublime- going back to the early 90's - and currently works with George Porter Jr., Fishbone, Dumpstaphunk, The Grouch and Eligh, Slightly Stoopid, among other successful contemporary artists. Jon and I have a little bit of a personal friendship and professional relationship over the past few years, but I don't really know him well at all. As such, it was like a class in session, as Jon took me back to the beginning of his long, strange trip in the music industry. Jon tells the tale of how he has carved his own lane in the game, doing so based on super-solid relationships, an ear for what's next, his penchant for putting the artist first, and he reflects on a humble and efficient approach to managing his eclectic roster at Silverback. Episode 018 begins with a short tribute to JamBase.com on the occasion of their 20th anniversary. Just wanted to take a few minutes to reflect on the impact that JamBase had on my life, my career, the culture, and so many other fantastic individuals who were crucial to La Costa Nostra for many moons. JamBase remains a crucial part of chronicling the culture and it was an absolute joy to celebrate their two decades of covering various jam scenes. JON PHILLIPS INTERVIEW STARTS AT 17:00 We begin with a bit about the city of New Orleans, and Jazz Fest, as that was where and when this interview was taking place. In addition to his personal history going to NOLA, Jon touches on the cosmic connection between Grateful Dead culture and New Orleans, from the Neville Brothers to getting busted on Bourbon and many points between. We also spoke a bit of the evolution of Jazz Fest as an event, and a culture unto itself. This was an interesting launching off point that connected our talk to Fest culture and NOLA funk, but allowed us to branch out as the conversation rolled on. We would return to NOLA a few times throughout the convo. Jon's experience in the music business had humble and serendipitous beginnings in SoCal, as he first connected with Bradley Nowell and Sublime. Jon was a major cog in the young band's operation as they rocketed towards success. He was personally asked by Bradley to be their manager, and he made it his personal mission to get Sublime signed, after much effort they made it happen at Gasoline Alley. Phillips was somebody who helped light the fuse for Sublime's meteoric rise to stardom, a gargantuan level of success, not just unprecedented but also something that Bradley sadly didn't live to enjoy. From the magic of the early days, to the special nature of his relationship with Nowell, to the warning signs and demon fears, when KROC first played “Date Rape” to Sublime trying to refuse to play the song at the KROC Weenie Roast, Jon takes us all down an emotional memory lane. Inevitably we discuss Bradley's tragic death from an overdose in May of 1996, and Jon is brutally honest about the way it all unfolded. Jon keeps it classy and places a focus on the triumph of the music that cannot and will not ever be denied. This is a powerful segment from someone who saw it all from the front lines. He pulls no punches yet at the same time shows such reverence for his fallen friend and his musical legacy. This is some of the realest shit this show has ever spoken. Rest in Power Bradley Nowell. From there he embarks on his life's work with Silverback Music, creating the company, signing the legendary Fishbone, and then setting out to develop another young band's career, this time with Slightly Stoopid, who came out of the Sublime diaspora. What Jon has overseen with the evolution of Stoopid is remarkable, and he explains a little bit of the grassroots nature of how the band built an empire, while the rest of the music industry chased it's tail in changing times. Stoopid has stayed ahead of the curve in developing their scene, their brand, and their culture, by staying true to themselves as fads come and go. Jon pulls back the curtain a little bit on how this band has set the bar for independent music, in so many creative ways.   We also discuss his NOLA clients like Dumpstaphunk, and his long-standing relationship with Ian and Ivan Neville. And of course we had to touch on George Porter Jr, who Jon has been working with for several years as well. Jon takes us through the blow-by-blow of how Foundation of Funk with Eric Krasno beckoned Phil Lesh to jam at the House of Blues in NOLA, and what Phil was like to hang with late night at Jazz Fest.
