His father played the drums, guitar and tenor sax and his brother and sister were heavily into the folk scene in the 1960s. By the time he was seven he was playing the ukulele and as he grew older his brother gave him his old guitar. After the arrival of the Beach Boys on the music scene he would start borrowing electric guitars until he finally managed to get one of his own in 1967. He began playing with local bands at school dances and a local college junior jazz band, and when he was 17 he moved to Los Angeles and shortly after toured with a rock band. In 1974 he began working with David Schecter of Schecter Guitar Research and was involved with the development of parts of guitars that are still in use today. He became in demand as a bass player and in 1978 landed a record deal with his band Pieces. He moved bands to collaborate with the drummer Gary Mallaber and after being requested for material by Steve Miller and having all the songs taken and appearing on the album Abracadabra, he was asked to sign up for the group. He became credited as “one of the songwriters who gave Steve Miller ‘personality'”. He still performs with the band but has continued to write for and perform with many other artists and groups such as David Mason, Meatloaf, Boz Scaggs, Steven Stills, Quincy Jones, B.B. King and Billy Preston as well as underscoring for motion pictures and television with film credits including Protocol, Iron Eagle, Night of the Comet, Pump Up the Volume and Spring Break. Albums he has appeared on during the course of his career include his own Get 2D Point and Music of The Steve Miller Band as well as Playing for Keeps by Eddie Money, Two Hearts by David Mason, Taj by Taj Mahal, Tracker by Tracker, Italian X-Rays. We've only mentioned him before, but today we go all out with our love for that mysterious and dangerous, yet misunderstood, monster from the depths - the Creature from the Black Lagoon! If you've been listening to Planet 8 for any length of time, you've probably heard us heap praises on Creech, but now we have a whole episode devoted to the Gill-Man.Engineer Bob with Creech in Bob Burn's placeWhat is it about the Creature that makes him so appealing? Certainly he has a fantastic look. His design was ahead of his time, and so has become a classic. Your Planet 8 crew discusses that amazing suit, and some differences in the design for the water scenes versus land. There's been a lot of awareness of Millicent Patrick's role in designing the Creature lately, and we touch on that, as well as the work of Jack Kevan, Chris Mueller, and Bud Westmore. And of course, the men who wore the suit on land and underwater, Ben Chapman and Ricou Browning, must be recognized. We'll take a look at each of the films (Creature from the Black Lagoon, Revenge of the Creature , The Creature Walks Among Us), and which is our favorite -and you might be surprised! And what would a fourth Creature film have been like? It's hard to discuss the Creature without talking about his desire for human ladies -of course in the first film, it was Julie Adams, and the sequence with the Creature swimming below her has become iconic. This leads into a discussion of Shape of Water...We all have our Creature Collectibles -Bob has a whole basement devoted to the Creature. His favorite Creature item though, is his Bally pinball machine. Karen's favorite (which she's mentioned many times before) is the Sideshow premium format figure of the Creature swimming. Last but not least, Larry's favorite is his Anchor Hocking Creature glass. Bob's Creature basementKaren's Creech bustAll this, and so much more! It's a Creature-palooza this time on Planet 8!For our Sensor Sweep, Karen shares an appropriate item: a wonderful book called The Creature Chronicles, by Tom Weaver, friend of the show David Schecter, and Steve Kronenberg. It's from McFarland Books, and you can order it from McFarland or Amazon. It has a wealth of info on the Creature, including overviews and inside info on each film, but also background on the music, other underwater monster films, and the Creature films that were never made. It would be a great addition to anyone's library. That's it for us! As the late, great Julie Adams used to say, Stay out of dark water!Hit us up in the comments section or at these other spots:Twitter: https://twitter.com/Planet8CastFacebook: www.Facebook.com/Planet8PodcastThanks for Listening!

Welcome to episode 4 of Season 2 of Real Democracy Now! A podcast. Today’s episode is about non-Western democracy. I’d like to thank David Schecter for bringing this area of democratic thinking and practice to my attention and for introducing me to my two guests: Associate Professor Benjamin Isakhan and PhD scholar Zelalem Sirna from Ethiopia. Both guests highlight the Eurocentric nature of much of the discourse on democracy and introduce us to some non-western examples of democratic practice. Benjamin Isakhan is Associate Professor of Politics and Policy Studies and Founding Director of POLIS, a research network for Politics and International Relations in the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalization at Deakin University, Australia. He is also Adjunct Senior Research Associate, in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa and an Associate of the Sydney Democracy Network at the University of Sydney, Australia. Ben is the author of Democracy in Iraq: History, Politics, Discourse (Routledge, 2012 HB, 2016 PB) and the editor of 6 books including The Secret History of Democracy (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011 HB, 2012 PB – translated into Japanese 2012, and Arabic 2014), and The Edinburgh Companion to the History of Democracy: From Pre-History to Future Possibilities (Edinburgh University Press & Oxford University Press, 2012 HB, 2015 PB). He is a leading expert and regular commentator on Middle Eastern Politics, Democracy and Democratization across the Middle East, and Heritage Destruction in the Middle East. Zelalem Sirna is a PhD scholar at the University of Coimbra in Portugal in the programme of Democracy in 21sy Century. He earned his LL.B degree in law from the Haramaya University Ethiopia and his MPhil in Indigenous Studies from University of Tromso, Norway. For his Masters, he undertook a comparative study of Gadaa, the traditional system of governance in Ethiopia and liberal democracy. For his Ph, he is looking at deliberative democracy, deliberative systems and the Gadaa system. As a sociology-legal researcher, is main works are focused on normative pluralism and the challenges it poses in 21st century. The next episode will consider what my guests think is the one change they would like to see in our system of democracy. I ask all of my guests the same two questions: what for you is the essence of a real democracy and if you could change one thing about our current system of democracy what would it be. I’d love to hear your answers to these two questions and include your perspectives in future episodes. You can send your perspectives to me by email to essence@realdemocracynow.com.au or via Twitter or Facebook.
