The word ‘church' was not used to describe hundreds of new Church of England congregations, initiatives and community groups set up over the last decade. Research by the Centre for Church Planting Theology and Research, at Cranmer Hall, Durham, found that in the past ten years, around 900 so-called “new things” have been started in 11 dioceses. But none of the dioceses used the term “church” as its main description of those ‘things'. Rev Canon Professor Alison Milbank, theologian and author of The Once and Future Parish (2023), and Rev Canon Dave Male, the Church of England's co-director for vision and strategy, discuss if this is simply about the choice of language or something deeper? In light of the government's emergency measures put in place in prisons, we're joined by the lead bishop for prisons, the Right Reverend Rachel Treweek, and David Spencer, Head of Crime and Justice at Policy Exchange, to explore the sentencing of young people and whether custodial sentences are helpful in the long term.Following Kamala Harris' acceptance of the Democratic nomination for president, we speak to theologian Brad Onishi, Professor of Religion at The University of San Francisco and co-host of the ‘Straight White American Jesus' podcast, to get his view on how the two candidates appeal to the US religious electorate. On this week's show, I'm excited to be joined for the third time by DSP (David Spencer-Percival!).The founder of Life Science People, a global life science people provider based in the UK with offices in the US and soon to be opening in Europe. They are just under three years old with 100 staff. The first time David was on the show, they were on their way to a hundred people - they were flying. The second time, earlier this year, David talked about how they'd lost a lot of money in the downturn at the end of last year - £800,000 in three months. The market just wasn't great. Now, he's back on the show to share that they've just secured £4 million in investment funding by Silchester Partners. This discreet, private hedge fund now owns 20% of his business and the £4 million is going to fuel their growth for the next 10 years to help them get to 1000 people. On this week's show, I am delighted to welcome back a previous guest, David Spencer Percival, known as DSP. His last episode was one of most listened to episodes I ever recorded!David is the founder of Life Science People, a specialist life science people recruitment firm headquartered in London with offices in LA. They've got over 85 heads and they're only two and a half years old!I interviewed David in November 2021, where he'd grown to 65 staff in 11 months. We'd also talked about his story. Before he was the founder he was part of a number of businesses. He's most famous for Spencer Ogden but he was also involved in two other businesses that grew to a £100 million in growth and over 500 staff. The reason we brought him on this week was to talk about the reality of the recession right now. When we interviewed in 2021, the market was going mad. There were deals going in for fun and it was an easy place to make money. Life science people were growing super fast! But by September 2022, the whole market changed. In this episode David explained how perm recruitment literally ‘fell off a cliff', and it was only because of contract revenue that the business was able to stay afloat. He lost £800,000 in three months at the end of 2022. They're now seeing a change as there's some positive signs. In this episode, we cover:Launching the US office just before the recession hit and the impact of that. How he kept himself sane, focused and positive despite confidence dropping all over the placeHow he's managed to work with a whole team of rookies, bearing in mind, his whole model is based on academy graduates - training and keeping a lot of these guysWhat he sees happening and predictions for the future. If you are suffering and you're feeling that the market's a little bit turbulent, listen to David. You'll get some real quality information that you can action.__________________________________________HoxoWe're on a mission to help brand recruitment agencies, giving them the means to stand out in the most competitive markets in the world. Here's how we can help:- Recruitment Agency branding- Personal Brand Academy for recruiters- Personal Brand ManagementCheck out our website and social profile for examples of our work in action and to hear what our clients have to say about us. It's NOT ON DISNEY+ MONTH on Escape From Vault Disney, in which this podcast ventures outside the confines of Disney+ for the first and only time! And for our first of five episodes of Not On Disney+ Month, say, did you know that in 1981, Disney made a movie where Bill Cosby played a demon from Hell? Cuz it's true! In 1981, Disney made a movie where Bill Cosby played a demon from Hell. Now, for some unknowable reason, Disney has seen fit to exclude their 1981 Disney movie where Bill Cosby played a demon from Hell from Disney+, which of course made the 1981 Disney movie where Bill Cosby played a demon from Hell eligible for our Not On Disney+ Month shortlist! And when our randomizer perused that shortlist, which, to reiterate, included the 1981 Disney movie where Bill Cosby played a demon from Hell, that randomizer saw fit to make us watch none other than the feature film released by the Walt Disney company in 1981 in which infamous comedian/TV star/convicted rapist/Jell-O commercial spokesman William Henry Cosby Jr. portrayed an unholy demon who came from what can only be described as Hell. December 26, 1996. Chelmsley Wood, England. 13-year old David Spencer and 11-year old Patrick Warren tell their families that they are planning to spend the night with Patrick's brother, but they never arrive and are subsequently reported missing. It turns out that the last confirmed sighting of the boys took place at a petrol station and Patrick's abandoned bicycle is found there next to some rubbish bins. Years later, Brian Field, a sex offender serving time in prison for the murder of another teenage boy, is looked at as a potential suspect in this case, but there is no conclusive evidence to implicate him and the two boys are never found. On this week's holiday-themed episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a unsolved mystery from the United Kingdom known as the “Milk Carton Kids” case, as this was the first British missing children's case in which the victim's faces were featured on milk cartons. This week, for our first of two Halloween episodes of the year, the randomizer goes all the way back to 1980 to cover a made-for-TV movie that has absolutely nothing to do with Halloween and barely even has all that much to do with ghosts. In fact, if anything, the titular ghosts are just interrupting an already way too convoluted story about a rich kid, his evil gold-digging relatives and the newly gender-integrated military academy he attends for some reason. Also there's a zipline competition, an awkward sex ed class scene and the most Italian man in the world. And did I mention the ghosts are Civil War veterans? Cuz the ghosts are Civil War veterans. I know it doesn't seem possible, but the film is even less coherent than I'm making it sound. Join Tony Goldmark, Mat Brunet (aka AniMat!), Kyle A.
