We kick off this week's Friday news roundup with a recap of City Cast Las Vegas's collaboration with ProPublica: An investigation into the so-called Tesla Tunnels that Elon Musk's Boring Company is building under Las Vegas, and how little oversight they've received. But there's even more to discuss this week: Co-hosts Sarah Lohman and Dayvid Figler are joined by Nevada Current deputy editor April Corbin Girnus, who discusses her article about the list of Nevada companies with the most employees on Medicaid, and why so many of them are in Southern Nevada. Next, the team tackles the impacts of the L.A. fires on Las Vegas — of note, yesterday, the City of Las Vegas asked residents to reconsider heavy driving, since the fires have impacted the main pipeline bringing gas to Las Vegas from California. And lastly, a beloved tourist attraction closes after 40 years — can we convince Dayvid to try indoor skydiving before it shutters for good? Want to get in touch? City Cast's new investigation, co-published with ProPublica, reveals new details about the so-called "Tesla tunnels" running under our city: When Elon Musk's Boring Company came to Las Vegas in 2019, its tunneling projects in other cities had already fizzled out after environmental reviews and public outcry. But here, with the backing of the powerful Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, the Boring Co. won a bid to build the Vegas Loop, a tunnel system for ferrying convention-goers around in underground Teslas — and it's since won approval from local government entities for 68 miles of tunnels. City Cast Las Vegas co-host Dayvid Figler and journalist Daniel Rothberg co-authored a new investigation for ProPublica about how the Boring Co. has advanced a sprawling transit system with little public oversight and input, despite the fines and environmental incidents it's racked up since the project began. City Cast Las Vegas co-host Sarah Lohman interviews Dayvid and Daniel in today's episode. Make sure to read the investigation in full here. ProPublica and City Cast Las Vegas made multiple attempts to reach the Boring Company for comment on this investigation, but have received no response as of the publication date. Kamala Harris was back in Las Vegas this week for a visit that many had anticipated would be an audition of sorts — would she sound, well, presidential? Today, co-hosts Sarah Lohman and Dayvid Figler are joined by TheList.Vegas creator Andrew Kiraly to talk about the womp-womp careful neutrality of the event, but also how Harris might fare with Vegas voters. Next up, Dayvid explains why the Mirage's $1.6 million “giveaway” isn't exactly a giveaway — but also shares details from his visit and how you can get it on the action. And lastly, the team discusses the curious lawsuit an Arkansas man is bringing against a local dancer who, he claims, “hoodwinked” him into thinking they were exclusive and out of millions of dollars. For a city that stays up late, we sure don't have too many coffee shops open past 4 p.m. But it wasn't always this way: Lifelong Las Vegan and co-host Dayvid Figler remembers the 90s as a golden era of late-night coffee shops that hosted poetry readings and musical performances. So where did they go? Co-host Sarah Lohman sits down with Dayvid and writer Kim Foster to talk about why late-night coffee shops are so important, and what's filling this “third space” gap in Las Vegas today. The news this week about a “missing murderer” conjured images of a guy with a knife creeping through backyards. But the truth is a lot more paperwork-related than the headlines might have you believe. Co-hosts Dayvid Figler and Sarah Lohman sit down with producer Layla Muhammad to discuss. They also get into the protests over our rising gas bills, which have even Summerlin residents up in arms, and the swanky new Las Vegas Airbnb experience hosted by Christina Aguilera that you can apply for here (yes, Sarah applied, and yes, we'll keep you posted!). Lastly, if you love this podcast, show us some love and help us win “Best Podcast” in the Las Vegas Weekly's annual Best of Vegas Awards. At the Oakland A's “fireside chat” this Wednesday, owner John Fisher's light-on-substance responses were overshadowed by a mortifying moment: When the emcee attempted to elicit cheers for “the Las Vegas A's,” she was met with crickets. So what does this event tell us about the A's efforts, and how successful their community inroads have been? Co-hosts Sarah Lohman and Dayvid Figler sit down with Nevada Independent reporter Jacob Solis to hash it out. Then, they discuss Trump's sole caucus challenger in Nevada, and if we're still the “we matter” state. And last but certainly not least, we give you the latest on the Fontainbleau's Nachogate debacle (and Dayvid reports back from his nacho-ventures last night). We're on social media! The Culinary Union's recent contract negotiations with the “Big Three” casino companies on the Strip were by all accounts historic. So what exactly did they win — and how? Today, co-host Dayvid Figler sits down with Culinary 226 Secretary-Treasurer Ted Pappageorge to discuss the inner workings of those negotiations. Why do they last until 6am, who has to pay for the food, and was it all (as some commentators have suggested) for show? Plus, Dayvid and Ted get into a spirited conversation about Culinary's arrest tactics, and look ahead at what's next for Nevada's biggest union. We're on social media! The 2023 legislative session saw over 900 new bills introduced that ranged from serious to seriously curious. So how do the legislators make time to discuss all of them? Well, the wackiest ones don't usually get a chance for debate on the floor, but Nevada Current reporter April Corbin Girnus tells co-host Dayvid Figler that there might be more to these “stunt” bills than you think. April and Dayvid discuss the wackiest bills proposed this session, and why they might serve a purpose, even if they're dead on arrival. The days of the dirt-cheap buffet and the 99 cent shrimp cocktail are long gone — and with inflation on the rise, cheap eats are harder to find than ever in Las Vegas. But being on a tight budget doesn't mean you can't (or shouldn't) enjoy a meal out, says contributor Brent Holmes. Today on the podcast, Brent tells co-host Dayvid Figler all about their philosophy on cheap eats, and where to find the best ones in town, from falafel to food markets. Yes, Las Vegas lights are visible from space and yes, you aren't going to see much of the night sky from the middle of town. But, as David Blanchette, vice president of special events at the Las Vegas Astronomical Society, tells co-host Dayvid Figler, the open desert just beyond the light dome of our city is a fantastic place to view the night sky. He spills the beans on some great out-of-the-way spots to stargaze, and explains how humidity in the air and proteins in the human eye can change your viewing experience. David and Dayvid also touch on the new development out at Red Rock Canyon, and how a simple change in light fixtures could help cut back on light pollution. Don't miss the LV Astronomical Society's next community event on March 25th. Do you have a special spot to go look up at the stars? More tips for getting a good night sky show? Las Vegas is one of the most well-known destinations in the world, yet the best known works about the city are mainly from visitors who don't always get things right. Co-Hosts Vogue Robinson and Dayvid Figler are both accomplished writers living in Las Vegas who struggle with biases and expectations about how Las Vegas can or should be depicted. At this very special live taping at the brand new Beverly Theater, Vogue and Dayvid sit down with accomplished Las Vegas-based writers Kim Foster and Veeda Bybee in front of an engaged, live audience, to discuss the balance between being protective of your home town but also writing true, intriguing accounts of a city as unique as Las Vegas. Kim and Veeda also discuss pushback in presenting Las Vegas stories to editors and publishers and making sure Las Vegas is given its fair due. Want to hear the full panel plus audience Q&A? You know we're not done complaining about the internet — we've definitely got some quality issues here in Southern Nevada, especially for the price. Yesterday, we talked about how two companies, Cox and CenturyLink, got their stranglehold on the Las Vegas broadband market, and why treating the internet like a publicly-owned utility might be the answer — even though municipal internet is actually illegal in Nevada. Today, we get another take: Dayvid sits down with Brian Mitchell, Director of the NV Office of Science, Innovation & Technology. Brian oversees High Speed Nevada, a new initiative that just got $55 million in federal funding. Brian talks about his solutions for better broadband in Nevada, but also says that municipal networks might not be the panacea they're touted as. Join the broadband conversation: OSIT wants your input! You can complete this form to join the process as a community partner. You can also take a speed test here to help OSIT see how fast internet speeds are in different parts of the state. And you can also submit a challenge to the FCC's map of speeds at your address here. Look, it's no secret that the internet options in Las Vegas aren't great. We pay more than the rest of the country for slower speeds, and it's worse if you're in lower-income and less white parts of town. But why?? How did we get here? Today, Dayvid talks with Sean Gonsalves, senior reporter, editor and researcher at the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, who explains how Cox and CenturyLink established control here (hint: there's a state law involved) and why treating the internet like a locally-owned utility could make all the difference. Don't miss out on tomorrow's episode, too: We're talking with a Nevada state official about the big federal money headed our way for broadband investment — and why he doesn't necessarily think that locally-owned municipal broadband is the answer. Hey, did you know that Henderson is the second-largest city in Nevada? Yep, the sister “suburb” of Las Vegas, so often overlooked, has more people than Reno — and as proud Henderson resident (and CCLV producer) Layla Muhammad tells Dayvid, it's actually not so very sleepy anymore. With the recent influx of sports facilities like the Raiders headquarters and the ongoing renovation of all those restaurants, breweries and bars on Water Street, Hendo is HAPPENING. Layla clues us into her favorite hikes, the best shopping, and great places to eat out in H-Town (and maybe, just maybe, we can all stop calling it Hender-tucky). Learn more about your ad choices. This week, Vogue, Dayvid and Sonja look at a wild week of news: First up, journalist Jeff German's murder investigation is back in the news, because his former employer, the Review-Journal, is locked in a battle with the LVMPD over German's cellphone. So: Is a deceased journalist's cellphone still protected under Nevada's shield laws? And what happens now? Next, we cover the wild tale of Golden Knights goalie Robin Lehner's bankruptcy, and the murdered owner of an exotic reptile breeding business that Lehner invested in. And if that wasn't enough news to make your head spin, it looks like some contaminated cannabis has been making its way around the state… since 2021. But how contaminated is it, exactly? And what should we be worried about? For a list of the affected cannabis products and dispensaries where they were sold, you can download the product list spreadsheet here. To no one's surprise, Baz Luhrmann's blockbuster hit “Elvis” got several Oscar nods yesterday, including nominations for Best Picture and Best Actor. So should you add “Elvis” to your lineup of pre-Academy Awards movie nights? The City Cast Las Vegas team watched the film together last fall — and we've got mixed feelings. Last week, the Artisan Hotel near the Strip made national news when its owners announced their plans to re-invent the venue as a “cannabis-friendly” resort. Why? Well, while weed might be legal in Nevada, Vegas isn't exactly tourist-friendly when it comes to consumption — there's a ban on public use, and so far, that includes hotels. With other state-level regulations in place, how likely is the Artisan to succeed? Today, Dayvid talks with Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom, whose district the Artisan is located in. Tick is well-known as an advocate for not only legalizing cannabis consumption, but also promoting Las Vegas as a cannabis destination — and he's probably the only elected official currently serving in the U.S. with a strain of cannabis named after him. Tick talks about his high hopes for the Artisan, and why cannabis tourism projects have faced an uphill battle. Should Las Vegas allow cannabis-friendly resorts? What would you like to see in one? If you're like me, sometimes you get obsessed by a band and find out that they broke up several years earlier. You think to yourself, “Where the hell was I”? Well, that happened with my guest, Steven Dayvid McKellar. His first and only band was Civil Twilight. Steven formed the band in Cape Town, South Africa, with his brother Andrew and their friend Richard Wouters just when the country started to open up from Apartheid. Their career got off to a quick start when they were offered a gig before the band even actually formed. After hitting a ceiling in South Africa, the group packed up and moved to Los Angeles with absolutely NO plan! After recording an album and receiving zero label support, the band caught a break in Texas and toured the US with bands like Jimmy Eat World, Silversun Pickups, Florence + The Machine, and Smashing Pumpkins. After years of touring, recording, and drinking, things finally caught up with Steven when he suffered back to back seizures from alcohol withdrawal. The band broke up and he took some time to regroup. Eventually music drew him back. He started writing music again and built up the courage to share it. In addition to a few EP's, he's finally released his full album, NAMA. It's a departure from Civil Twilight and sounds more experimental. Steven also talks about what the future may hold. Arguably the biggest story out of Vegas this year was the murder of veteran Review-Journal investigative reporter Jeff German. German was found stabbed outside his home in September. Police found DNA at the scene matching Robert Telles, a Clark County public administrator who was the subject of German's reporting. Lead producer Sonja Cho Swanson gets an update from our resident lawyer, co-host Dayvid Figler, before we revisit an episode where Sonja, Dayvid, and newsletter editor Scott Dickensheets remember German and discuss the increasingly hostile attitudes towards journalists in America. There's a new sports team in town, Las Vegas — the Desert Dogs!!! So, are we all about to become huge lacrosse fans? Today, Dayvid chats with News 3's main sports anchor, Bryan Salmond, about why the answer is YES, and how the wild success of our five-year-old hockey team, the Golden Knights, may have primed us to love the shockingly similar game of box lacrosse. Starting on January 1, a whole bunch of minor traffic offenses (like broken tail lights and expired vehicle registrations) will become decriminalized — so what does that mean for Nevadans? Dayvid sits down with Leisa Moseley, Nevada State Director at the Fines and Fees Justice Center, to talk about how criminal punishments for small traffic offenses can snowball into bigger (and much more expensive) issues, and how the passage of AB 116 could actually make our streets safer. This is a special episode from the podcast City Cast Las Vegas that was originally released in October. The federal Equal Rights Amendment was a simple thing: An amendment to the Constitution to guarantee equal rights regardless of gender, for both men and women. But the bill languished in 1977 without enough state support... Until Nevada (yes, our very own Silver State) brought it back from the dead and ratified it in 2017 — thanks to NV, the federal ERA is back in play. And then, we took it one step further: A state-level ERA that's even more expansive than the federal ERA is on the ballot as Question 1 this November. To help us parse out just why Question 1 is so confusing and what voters can expect if it passes, Dayvid sits down with Kate Kelly, an attorney and advocate for the ERA who's currently campaigning for “Yes on 1” in Las Vegas right now. Kate answers all your ERA questions, like: Will the ERA be the end of girls' sports? (No.) Will kids be able to buy beer?(Again, no.) And will the ERA protect abortion rights? (A resounding yes.)How are you planning to vote on Question 1? Or what questions do you have about it? We had the pleasure of interviewing Steven Dayvid McKellar over Zoom video.South African-born but Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Steven Dayvid McKellar recently his new EP One and Zero. A product of the last two pandemic years, this EP proved to be a cathartic creative outlet for him. Bringing together introspective and personal observations of the intrinsic world of isolation with the larger cultural context that the polarized socio/political environment has bred in this country, One and Zero is at once an individual reflection and a social commentary. “It's both the times we're in and then the questions I'm asking myself. I think the intimacy comes from the desire to be more vulnerable and honest with myself and with others,” he continues. Minimalistic and introspective without pretense or artifice, One and Zero explores the isolation that the pandemic brought on. The former lead singer and primary songwriter for popular rock band Civil Twilight, McKellar dives deep into the subconscious and unearths melodies that strike the gut, eliciting deep seated emotions of heartbreak in his minimalistic electronic style. The title track tackles the stasis and stillness of being that the quarantine brought. The EP is rounded out by the contemplative “Fading In, Fading Out” and a live version of “The Promise?” from his previous album ETHIO. “I am in the middle of my life (most likely) and so the natural question that pops up is, am I fading in or am I fading out,” he asks in reference to the aforementioned track. “I'm both, at the same time, all the time.” Regarding the live take on “The Promise?” and why he opted to revisit that track from his 2020 album, he replies, “That song, and ETHIO as a whole, never really got heard or liked. And I'm really proud of that record and wanted to show another angle. My dear friend Daniel Shepherd filmed me while I played songs from that album outside in a parking lot on the bed of my truck. You can hear birds chirping in the background and I like that.” With Civil Twilight, McKellar had seen life on the big stage, having led the South African rock band through a very successful run, sharing stages with Jimmy Eat World, Silversun Pickups, Smashing Pumpkins and Florence + the Machine amongst others. Civil Twilight's songs were placed on TV shows such as One Tree Hill, House, and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Now solo and focusing on releasing music on his own terms, he's thankful to continue being creative. We want to hear from you!
