Macon and Walter talk with people on the front lines of the world's largest protest taking place in the world's largest democracy. Why are India's farmers protesting? How are they organizing? DJ KP on The DJ Sessions presents Silent Disco Sunday's 9/26/20 About DJ KP - The Story of DJ KP 2007-2008 DJ KP moved to San Diego and that is when he was first exposed to West Coast music; especially remixes. He began to mess around with basic mixing software in his dorm room and started making mixes of his own. 2009 He moved back to Kansas City and had the opportunity to study abroad in Barcelona, Spain. He was overwhelmed with the dance music scene out there. He fully embraced it and submerged himself in it. The time spent there changed his life forever. Unfortunately, when he came back from Barcelona he contracted Mono and was out of commission for a month. His sister bought him a very basic audio mixer to help pass the time. Little did she know, her actions lit an internal fire that would drive KP to pursue music and never look back. 2009-2010 At this point, he had gotten the hang of basic mixing and his roommate at the time Deep Singh was mastering the Dholi (Indian Drum). With the help of parental investors, they got together and decided to form DK Productions. They had the equipment and they hit the streets to market the brand. Soon after, they started getting their first gigs, and from there the rest was history. This was the time when DJ KP first chose the name Dj eKleCtic. 2011-2013 (More with DK Productions) With each event, they got better and better. Together Deep and DJ KP would bounce ideas off each other and integrate them into their sets. At this time, DJ KP started working his own own club gig/events and started really getting his eKleCtic name and brand out there. 2014-2017 He decided to leave Kansas City and move to Seattle. That first year in Seattle he was going to concerts left and right: hip hop, edm, trap, etc. You name it and he was there. He was taking it all in, gaining influence on how to build a set and captivate a crowd. These years were spent mainly in the studio perfecting his craft and working on mixes to share with the world. During this time he was doing a lot of pre-made mixes for friends and old customers back in KC. 2018-Present He decided to retire Dj eKleCtic and rebrand as DJ KP. He is a different person with a much different approach to how he djs now. He has been influenced by so many artists in the last 9 years and has used those experiences to help nurture his own fusion style. You can find DJ KP playing all over Seattle, whether it be a silent disco, a private Indian event, or late nights at The Monkey Loft. About The DJ Sessions - We go LIVE every Wednesday at 6 p.m. PST. The images that accompany this podcast may be found here: https://blogs.bl.uk/asian-and-african/2019/03/musicians-and-dancers-in-the-india-office-records.html In 1818, the East India Company signed a treaty with the autonomous Rajput states of Jaipur and Jodhpur, offering British political and military protection in exchange for heavy cash tribute. By the early 1830s, these states were swimming in debt and increasingly resisting the Company's influence. So in 1835 the Company took direct control over the revenue of the salt lake at Sambhar, still one of India’s largest sources of that most precious of commodities, salt. Sambhar Lake was returned to Jaipur's and Jodhpur’s control in 1842 when, having been brought to the brink of ruin by the Company’s protection racket, their arrears were written off by the Government in Calcutta. Short-lived and little-studied, the Sambhar Lake affair left behind a set of financial accounts in the East India Company records that are alive with details of musicians and dancers, the cycle of Sambhar's festival year, and the economics of such cultural production. One musician in particular stands forth from Jaipur's accounts as exceptional, Mayalee “dancing girl”. As well as being paid a monthly cash stipend, she received 25 maunds of salt annually, and was clearly one of Sambhar’s chief courtesans. Little exculpatory notes in the margins of successive Company accounts reveal that Mayalee successfully resisted the Company’s attempt to force her to give up her salt stipend in exchange for cash. Was she merely protecting a nice little sideline selling salt? Or did the more lofty ideal of “faithfulness to the salt” (namak-halali) underpin her resistance? In this podcast I consider why Indian musicians and especially courtesans appear at all in the official records of the East India Company, and what this tells us about relations between the British colonial state and the Indian peoples whose worlds it was increasingly encroaching upon during the 1830s and 40s. The images that accompany this podcast may be found here: http://blogs.bl.uk/asian-and-african/2018/06/sophia-plowden-khanum-jan-and-hindustani-airs.html Khanum Jan was a celebrity courtesan in the cantonment of Kanpur and the court of Asafuddaula of Lucknow in 1780s North India. Famed then for her virtuosic singing, dancing, and speaking eyes, Khanum became famous again in the twentieth century because of her close musical interactions with a remarkable Englishwoman, Sophia Plowden. Through Plowden’s papers and extraordinary collection of Khanum’s repertoire, it is possible to reconstruct songs from the Lucknow court as they may have been performed 200 years ago, in both Indian and European versions. In this podcast, Katherine Butler Schofield tells the story of these two women, and harpsichordist Jane Chapman joins her to perform some of Khanum’s “Hindustani Airs”. The intertwined stories of Khanum and Sophia show that using Indian sources of the time to read between the lines of European papers and collections gives us a much richer view of this sadly short-lived moment of intercultural accord in late Mughal India. In the next of our chats with members of the cast and creative team of the very first production of The Merchant of Venice to be staged in the Venice Ghetto itself, Judi Herman talks to Frank London, composer and musician. The Grammy-winning trumpeter and composer, founder of the Klezmatics and leader of bhangra/Yiddish group Sharabi (with Deep Singh), Shekhinah Big Band, and his Klezmer Brass Allstars is no stranger to large-scale collaborative projects, or of course to Jewish-themed work. Here he talks about the musicians who are working with him on this project and his inspirations for the music that will be heard in the Ghetto.
Cochin, or Kochi is the second largest Westcoast Indian city after Mumbai with a total population of just over 2 million. Ernakulum District encompassing the townships and total urban area has the highest percentage of Christians in all of India. It’s not surprising to see so many churches and a strong Christian local culture and why it’s so busy in the village of Fort Cochin on a Sunday. Syrian Orthodoxy originally made up the Christian community before Europeans arrived in the 15th century. Historically Cochin had a large Jewish community arriving here as early as 7th century BC with spice traders. Hindus still make up the largest portion of the population. After Christians, Muslims are the third biggest group in Cochin, many living in Matancherry township. With the diverse mix of beliefs, spirituality and cultures Cochin is also known as a very tolerant community with harmony like nowhere else in India.Fort Kochi was a simple fishing village before the Portuguese were handed over control in 1503. It was named after the fort built by the Portuguese later to be destroyed by the Dutch who in 1683 captured the territory. Today the town is literally a history book of architecture. A mix of Dutch, Portuguese and British buildings make this one of the most unique communities in India.Matancherry right next door to Fort Cochin is a tourist center for the curious interested in visiting historic Jew Town. Antique and rug shops line the streets but you can still find atmospheric lanes with a rich history of spice trade. It was here that the first trade link for pepper and tumeric was established. Derek’s current project is monumental, rebuilding Thangpalkot 1 village in the Sindhupalchowk District of Nepal and all of it’s 86 homes destroyed by the earthquakes of 2015. This was the worst hit region in Nepal with almost 97% of all of the over 66,000 homes in Sindhupalchowk completely destroyed.I first met Derek in Kathmandu in November 2015 just as he was beginning his work in Nepal. I spoke with him recently while he was back in Kathmandu replenishing building supplies for Thangpalkot 1.You can help Derek Cowan rebuild Thankpalkot 1 village in Nepal by donation or as a volunteer.
