This week, Justin and John Michael Heath from "EAP Society" discuss some recent Elvis news including the discovery of a longer, extended clip of behind the scenes footage from the making of Love Me Tender, confirmation from Disney of more Elvis songs returning in the Lilo & Stitch remake (review coming next week!), and then the guys talk about their recent adventures having their attention drawn to two artists Elvis openly acknowledged as influences but are only infrequently discussed: vocalists Arthur Prysock and John Gary, the former a semi-operatic soul singer whose dulcet tones blurred genre lines between jazz, R&B, pop and country, and the latter a remarkable tenor whose strong, controlled and nuanced voice clearly resonated with Elvis. Then for Song of the Week, John highlights Elvis's recitation of Hank Williams's "Men with Broken Hearts" and explores the way Elvis seemed to draw from music to explore and articulate his feelings about real life. Meanwhile, Justin tries his best to make amends with the 1961 minor hit ballad, "I'm Yours," a track laden with Floyd Cramer's heavy organ, after learning where songwriters Don Robertson and Hal Blair intended the song to be used. Gurdip was really feeling the season, so in between prepping for next week's meaty episode with Ryan on "On Stage 1970", Justin and Gurdip had a breezy little classic TCBCast-style discussion about the Elvis songs that evoke memories or give them vibes of warm summer days. The guys also quickly tackle two Songs of the Week, with Gurdip giving "Once is Enough" from "Kissin' Cousins" the second chance he feels it deserves, and Justin simmering with the understated (and oft-overlooked) Don Robertson-penned ballad "Love Me Tonight" from the early 1963 sessions that should have led to a studio album (later known as The Lost Album or For the Asking), but instead the song was buried as a bonus on the soundtrack for "Fun in Acapulco." After 5 1/2 years, TCBCast returns to the subject of books about Elvis as a full episode! Gurdip and Justin did an early episode of the show about some of their favorite reads on the life, career and phenomenon of Elvis, but this time Bec gets to open up her extensive Elvis library to talk about her favorites, and Justin gets to talk about some of the ones he's read and appreciated most in the intervening years. These aren't necessarily recommendations to rush out and buy immediately after listening, as a few that are referenced are quite difficult to find nowadays (especially the FTD books) but there are definitely a few that you may want to pick up afterwards. For Song of the Week, Bec picks "I'm Falling in Love Tonight", the Don Robertson ballad that the songwriter himself got to play on for the "It Happened At the World's Fair" soundtrack, while Justin highlights "Take Good Care of Her," which Elvis had a Top 10 country hit with in 1974. One of the news items we reference at the top of the show: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/graceland-elvis-presley-scam-naussany-branson-missouri-rcna157155 If you enjoy TCBCast, please consider supporting us with a donation at Patreon.com/TCBCast. “We wanted to make sure that there were slates, they were diverse and had all the groups represented. It isn't a case of trying to stop someone from getting something they deserve. What you're trying to do is make sure these other groups get the opportunities they deserve", says Don."I'm not a believer that we favor one group or another. I'm just a believer that everyone should have an opportunity. Because we're just human beings and we follow patterns of behavior, we're not necessarily inclined to give everyone an opportunity. Most of what we focused on was really just creating a more holistic opportunistic environment.” On the Insurance Coffee House Podcast this week, Don talks about: his journey from CFO and Sales to CHRO and the 4 key factors that attracted him in to the insurance industry creating an institutionally consistent employee experience with opportunities for alldriving DEI change based on the evidence of data to create hope and purposemeeting, coaching and exposing underrepresented groups to development and promotion opportunitiesbalancing beautiful traditions with a need to be modernize and not being able to town hall your way to change the importance of understanding and representing clients' cultures and communitiesthe scope of his role, covering HR, people and operations, as well as managing a team of 500-600 his advice for leaders at interview and why he believes we're going to become a skills-based economy “The most important thing people need to do, whether it's my HR colleagues or people interviewing for roles, is to make sure you understand the relevant experiences and skill sets that are needed. Justin and Bec explore Elvis' "marathon" sessions from June 1970, starting with laying the groundwork for the return to Nashville's RCA Studio B, pondering why Elvis may not have chosen to return to Chips Moman's American Sound in Memphis. Instead Elvis is joined this time by a new band led by his live guitarist James Burton but otherwise comprised largely of country-soul players who had worked alongside producer Felton Jarvis in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, including Chip Young, Jerry Carrigan, David Briggs, Norbert Putnam and Charlie McCoy, and rather than a meticulous planned session with Chips' guiding vision... they tear through dozens of songs across four nights, with a follow-up session later that September. Part 1 focuses on the establishing information and the first two nights, June 4-5 and June 5-6, 1970. For Song of the Week, Bec highlights "I Met Her Today," the understated Don Robertson ballad that was cut in 1961's Pot Luck sessions but held until the hodgepodge Elvis For Everyone album four years later. Meanwhile, Justin goes way back to the Sun era, selecting the middle child single "Milkcow Blues Boogie" - couched between Good Rockin' Tonight and Baby Let's Play House, yet containing that same genius melding of blues (it was written and originated by Kokomo Arnold) and country (also highly popularized by western swing artists like Bob and Johnnie Lee Wills) in a new rockabilly style as anything else he did at Sun. Human resources — and the role of the chief HR officer with it — has been seeking a proverbial "seat at the table" for years now. The difference now is, more of them are not only gaining that seat, they are "helping design the table." In this episode of Get Reworked, we speak with Don Robertson, EVP and CHRO of Northwestern Mutual about his approach to employee experience and how his previous experience on the business side informs how he operates — namely, with a business-first mindset. "Many of the things that we have to do require you to put together business cases to look at the financials, to look at budgets, all these things and if you don't have strong financial skills, if you don't have strong ability to really put together business cases, just like you would if you're the investments team, and you're putting together a business case, to go do an investment to buy a building or do something, you have to have those kinds of skill sets. I can't just go in there and say, hey, we should invest $10 million in a new HR system, because our people will like it better and will have better engagement," said Don. "No, I have to be able to show: if we do this, we'll get more adoption. If we get more adoption, then people leaders will do what we need them to do. And they'll ultimately develop their people better. And therefore you'll have the talent you need. And these are the kinds of investments you need to make so that you know our engagement goes up or attrition goes down or we get better adoption. And you just start talking about the actual attribution things that you benefit from by doing these things. And I can tell you in a zero sum game and the world we live in with budgets and everything else, you have to be able to make those cases." Highlights of the conversation include: Why data is a modern CHRO's best friend. How Northwestern went from employee engagement in the low 40s to over 80%. The role HR business partners play in Don's work. How Northwestern approaches the employee expectation-business need balancing act. The role he sees HR playing with AI adoption. Plus, hosts Nidhi Madhavan and Siobhan Fagan talk with Don about why he thinks rolling back on EX efforts is a mistake, how he's consciously developing the skills of his potential successor and why he thinks anyone working in HR would benefit by spending time on the business side. Listen in for more. Have a suggestion, comment or topic for a future episode? Send it to editors@reworked.co.

Sigma Alpha Iota's (SAI) All Campus Sing has showcased the musical talents, dance skills, wardrobe creativity and often, the wicked sense of humor, of Racers across many of the campus's student organizations for 65 years. And nearly every April since 1958, students, faculty, staff, locals and alumni have crowded the lawn in front of Lovett Auditorium, along with thousands of Racers around the globe tuned-in online, to watch the highly-choreographed musical numbers on Murray State's most beloved steps. This year's event is Wednesday, April 12, beginning at 3 p.m. Apart from, maybe, longtime Student Organization Advisor Jeanie Morgan and a handful of others, few Racers have participated in more consecutive All Campus Sings than Murray State Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Dr. Don Robertson, or to those in the know, Dr. R. Dr. Robertson is joined by Logan Stout ('11, '15), the ACS Master of Ceremonies who first participated as a student, himself, to chat about some of their favorite ACS memories. Racer Men's Basketball fans will also recognize Logan as the P.A. announcer during games in the CFSB Center. This year's All Campus Sing event chairs, Addi Bussen, Aidan Schweitzer and Gena Parker join us to share all of the ways alumni near and far can support the participating student organizations, as well as SAI's annual philanthropy, People to People, a non-profit organization that provides instruments, music and music accessories to those without access. The greatest thing since sliced bread by Don Robertson (1965) vs Downtown Owl by Chuck Klosterman (2008).
Guest Darin Evans joins Gurdip and Justin for an in-depth look at Elvis's 1961-1962 output which eventually led to the release of the album Pot Luck in May 1962. What starts with a Blue Hawaii reject and several sessions simply held for the purpose of recording singles eventually begins to take shape as the severely overlooked followup to 1961's "Something for Everybody." Top songwriters like Doc Pomus, Mort Shuman and Don Robertson dominate the material recorded in June and October 1961 and we get to be a fly on the wall as we hear Elvis, alongside key members of the Nashville A-team at the top of their A-game, working steadily away to create products with commercial and creative viability. Was Pot Luck truly a disappointment, or simply misjudged? We'll try to find out across this two-parter. If you enjoy TCBCast, please consider supporting us with a donation at Patreon.com/TCBCast! Your support allows us to continue to provide thoughtful, provocative, challenging and well-researched perspectives on Elvis's career, his peers and influences, and his cultural impact and legacy.
