DJ Paulette comes to the MRL to speak about her book "Welcome to the Club: The Life and Lessons of a Black Woman DJ" and her career in the industry Date : 14 Mars 2024 With : DJ Paulette, Nora Zufferey
DJ Paulette is a legend of the UK's dance music scene. She's one of the nation's first black female DJs, revered for her unmatched charisma behind the decks. Her memoir, Welcome To The Club, launched earlier this year, and lifts the lid on the misogyny and racism of the music industry, whilst honouring the frequently unseen women ensuring the turntable stays spinning. In this episode, Paulette discusses the need to speak up, and her feelings about the pressure to do so. She talks of the childhood which both equipped and didn't equip her for the fight which lay ahead, the paths not travelled, and the importance of a fabulous lipstick. DJ Paulette. We salute you. Welcome to episode 182 with DJ Paulette, who is a renowned DJ, radio broadcaster and author who has spent more than three decades entertaining crowds all over world and breaking down racial and gender barriers along the way. She was the first female DJ to hold residency at The Hacienda, playing weekly at the ground-breaking LGBTQ+ club night ‘FLESH' in the early nighties, and went on to have residencies at Heaven and Ministry of Sound, before serving successful stints in Paris and Ibiza. In 2022 she was the first woman to win the prestigious DJ Mag Lifetime Achievement Award. Her debut book ‘Welcome to The Club: The life and lessons of a black woman DJ' was published earlier this year to huge acclaim. In this episode I chat to DJ Paulette about the mental health challenges she has faced throughout her life. We chat about dance music, hedonism and burnout and we chat about breaking down, breaking through, asking for help and just how vital music and community are to mental wellbeing. This month, my guest is a true icon in the UK dance music scene, and that is Manchester's own DJ Paulette. A club kid from her earliest days, Paulette cut her teeth at Manchester's number one club, before earning her first residency at Flesh, the beloved queer party at the infamous nightclub Hacienda. She helped forge the electronic music scene in the UK as one of country's first and best-loved black female DJs, celebrated for her expert selection and her inimitable charisma behind the decks. She continues to carry the torch for the next generation of young artists — a journey explored at length in her new memoir. In this conversation, Paulette and I discuss her book Welcome to the Club, her vital and pioneering role in music, and what it means to be trailblazer. ++ Music: "Sheroes" - Massey & DJ Paulette (2018) "And I'm Telling You" - Donna Giles (Stonebridge Poppers Full Delight Remix) (1994) "Violins & Things" - Massey & DJ Paulette (2018) ++ Follow AIR Insta: https://www.instagram.com/_airpodcast/ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/airpodcast

Last time Annie Macmanus came on The Shift she was about to make a MASSIVE change. Then, in her early 40s, one of the country's biggest female DJs was on the brink of walking away. The prescribed way of doing things - climbing, climbing, climbing, until you were Johnny Big Balls, as she put it, was not for her. She, like so many women at this life stage, wanted to find a new way, to build her own decks.Since then Annie, now 45, has written two novels, the latest of which is The mess we're in, out now in paperback, helmed two hit podcasts and launched the so-fabulous-I-can't-believe-nobody-thought of it-before club night, Before Midnight. Aimed at those of us who love to dance but don't want to stay up til 3am to do it.Annie joined me for one of those conversations that goes to all the places. We discussed the emotional upheaval of leaving a big job after 17 years and how she rediscovered who she was when she wasn't on the radio. Plus the loneliness of working from home, the hormonal chaos of perimenopause, the scary urge to “set fire to something”, making new friends in your 40s, getting back on the football pitch and leaning into who she really is now she no longer has to waste time getting manicures! You can read Annie's piece on the shock of realising she was lonely here. • If you loved this episode, you might also like my earlier conversation with Annie where she talks about reaching the decision to leave Radio 1, and my chats with Jo Whiley and DJ Paulette.* You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Annie's new book, The Mess We're In and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me.* If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com• And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com• The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. This episode features a bonafide legend! If you've heard of one UK club it's probably the Hacienda. DJ Paulette was one of the only female residents at legendary queer night Flesh, kicking off a multi-decade-spanning career that's taken in residencies in Ibiza, London and Paris and regularly playing alongside the likes of David Guetta and Bob Sinclair. Her journey hasn't always been smooth; in her new book 'Welcome To The Club' she discusses the sexism, racism, ageism and homophobia that she's had to overcome. Despite this Paulette remains as optimistic and passionate about the power of DJing as ever and talks about the new generation of black female DJs like Jamz Supernova, Jaguar, Anz and our very own Erica McKoy have inspired her.A must-listen for anyone in music wanting to build a long-term career, Paulette reveals how to read a room, how to overcome quiet periods and why sometimes it's problematic to have an identical twin to step in for you...Thanks for listening to Dances For Buildings. My guest today is a true trailblazer. If you've ever been a clubber, DJ Paulette will need zero introduction. If you haven't, well, all you really need to know is she has been breaking barriers since day one. One of the Hacienda's first female DJs, she became a stalwart of the Manchester music scene in the 90s, before being catapulted to stardom playing crowds of tens of thousands all over the world. All this in a world that's a notorious boys club; where women famously have to do it backwards in high heels. And as a black queer woman she's had to do triple back flips as well, just to get a fraction of the recognition. In November 2022 she became the first female of colour to win DJ Magazine's lifetime achievement award, amongst an all-male roll-call. (Surprise!)Now she's reliving those years in her first book. Welcome to The Club - the life and lessons of a black woman DJ, discusses the highs and lows, the sexism, racism and ageism, she's navigated throughout her 30 year career.Paulette joined me from Manchester to talk about how perimenopause knocked her sideways at 39. 39! Being told no-one would book her bc she was too old at 41. The career-kids conundrum. Back fat, underarm vaginas & a kangaroo pouch. Being older at 24 than 54. And why she will never stop sticking her neck out. If you loved this episode, you might also like my conversations with Annie Macmanus and Karen Arthur.* You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Welcome to the Club by DJ Paulette and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me.* And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com• The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. Our guest today is a trail blazing DJ, presenter and author who has carved herself a position of love and respect in the music industry that climaxed with a Lifetime Achievement Award from DJ magazine. Ever since she found her way into the DJ booth she has honed her own style, listening, learning and leading. DJ Paulette started her career in her home City of Manchester playing some of the most influential clubs in the history of house. She played the infamous 'Flesh' night at the Hacienda and began to create ripples that became waves that she surfed out to London, Brighton, Paris, Ibiza and the world. Her new book 'Welcome to the club' is a frank and funny look at club culture and the myth of the glamorous DJ lifestyle. We also take a look at a fabulous new book about Robert Smith and The Cure by Simon Price called 'Curepedia'. It's a monumental coffee table companion for the Lovecats of this world which compiles the A-Z of this most enduring band. But before we find The Cure and slip into the booth with Paulette, Deb and Eamon catch up with each other and compare their favourite gigs and festivals of the last year. It's basically Iron Maiden Vs Aphex Twin which is an unexpected heavy weight clash that leaves everyone stunned. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

“Don't accept it's over, because it's really not!” DJ Paulette has spun records and societal expectations into a legacy of empowerment and beats. If you've ever been a clubber, you'll know that the dance floor can be the background to personal, societal and cultural revolutions. DJ Paulette is testament to that, as a true pioneer of the Manchester music scene. She started her career in early 90s Manchester, against the backdrop of Section 28, the AIDS crisis, and the Poll Tax riots. One of the Hacienda's first female DJs, she catapulted to global superstar status, living and performing in countries the world over. DJing is still a pretty white, male industry, but when this week's guest, DJ Paulette, first began spinning vinyl in Manchester's nightclubs in the 90s, black women DJs were few and far between. Winner of the DJ Mag's Top 100 Lifetime Achievement Award, DJ Paulette's career has spanned over two decades and multiple locations. But inside this candid conversation, Paulette also shares the personal path she's trodden along the way.Paulette shares the real sense of threat she felt DJing as a black woman in the clubs in 90's Manchester, her time doing PR for some of the 90s and 00s most influential dance music artists and setting Paris on fire with her iconic flavour of House music selections. But perhaps just as interesting is Paulette's experience of losing her mojo with DJing, packing it all in and moving back to Manchester and how she's rebuilt her career and reconnected with the DJ artform.
