The prescribed way of doing things - climbing, climbing, climbing, until you were Johnny Big Balls, as she put it, was not for her. She, like so many women at this life stage, wanted to find a new way, to build her own decks.Since then Annie, now 45, has written two novels, the latest of which is The mess we're in, out now in paperback, helmed two hit podcasts and launched the so-fabulous-I-can't-believe-nobody-thought of it-before club night, Before Midnight. Aimed at those of us who love to dance but don't want to stay up til 3am to do it.Annie joined me for one of those conversations that goes to all the places. My guest today is a true trailblazer. If you've ever been a clubber, DJ Paulette will need zero introduction. If you haven't, well, all you really need to know is she has been breaking barriers since day one. One of the Hacienda's first female DJs, she became a stalwart of the Manchester music scene in the 90s, before being catapulted to stardom playing crowds of tens of thousands all over the world. All this in a world that's a notorious boys club; where women famously have to do it backwards in high heels. And as a black queer woman she's had to do triple back flips as well, just to get a fraction of the recognition. In November 2022 she became the first female of colour to win DJ Magazine's lifetime achievement award, amongst an all-male roll-call. (Surprise!)Now she's reliving those years in her first book. Welcome to The Club - the life and lessons of a black woman DJ, discusses the highs and lows, the sexism, racism and ageism, she's navigated throughout her 30 year career.Paulette joined me from Manchester to talk about how perimenopause knocked her sideways at 39. 39! Being told no-one would book her bc she was too old at 41. The career-kids conundrum. Back fat, underarm vaginas & a kangaroo pouch. Being older at 24 than 54. And why she will never stop sticking her neck out. This week we're looking at the theme of Responsibility, how we feel about it, and how its meaning might change for us over time. Whether it begins with a badge on our blazers or a ticket to teenage independence, being given responsibility might not always be such a gift, when it later brings with it the added pressures of work, or the task of emotionally regulating the people we live alongside. We suggest that it might be wiser to take responsibility in our lives, rather than be given it, and for our sense of duty to deliver on the values that lie within ourselves, rather than be employed to meet the needs of others. We talk about the dangers of outsourcing responsibility to others and how gaslighting and toxic relationships can get set up, and we discuss the impact of an outdated and patriarchal sense of responsibility for others, when all we can ever usefully offer is a sense of responsibility to the people we care about.---Elizabeth references the Changes podcast, hosted by Annie Macmanus, in which she interviews Zadie Smith: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/zadie-smith/id1465937091?i=1000626637952 And she generously crowbars in a reference to Emma's new book, called “What Am I Missing: The Four Blind Spots that are Holding You Back, and How to Overcome Them” - out in April 2024 and available to pre-order now: https://amzn.eu/d/6yuHeXV Oh, and she also takes us back to Aristotle, because she's a historian at heart.Emma shares her most wholesome of weekends and, should you find yourself in Hampshire and keen to become more “manipulate”, you too can check out the wonderful workshops hosted by @alicecrowe_ceramics, @nicepearceramics and @rushmerefarm. ---Best Friend Therapy is hosted by Elizabeth Day and Emma Reed Turrell, produced by Chris Sharp. --- Social Media: Elizabeth Day @elizabday Emma Reed Turrell @emmareedturrellBest Friend Therapy @best.friend.therapy

It's fascinating to see how much of what we talked about has since come to pass.My guest this week is a business woman, broadcaster, curator, tastemaker and DJ. She headlines festivals, hosts one of BBC Radio 1's flagship shows, was Europe's biggest female DJ and has her own hit podcast Changes with Annie Macmanus. And now, as if that wasn't e-bloody-nough (bc let's not forget the two kids), Annie has written her first novel, Mother Mother. Oh and she's cool. And nice. (In the best possible way. Not in the I'm too lazy to think of a proper adjective kind of way.)Over the next 45 minutes, Annie talks about the unexpected impact of turning 40, growing up with her fans and why middle aged women are a force to be reckoned with. Although this was recorded before she resigned from her job hosting Radio 1's flagship show, she's candid about saying goodbye to DJing and how it feels to start again professionally, why she's a control-fan and how she learnt to be comfortable in her own skin. Plus she gives me a lesson in radical no-ness!You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at Bookshop.org, including the book that accompanies this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too by Sam Baker and Mother Mother by Annie Macmanus. The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Emily Sandford. Annie's new novel, which is out now, is laced into her own life experience and changes. It's a coming-of-age story with themes about moving from Ireland to London. So, the interviewer had to be someone who can relate, someone who is Irish, a fellow Dubliner who also currently lives in London; enter one of Ireland's best, a former guest on Changes, the wonderful comedian and host of the podcast My Therapist Ghosted me, Joanne McNally. It's the first interview Joanne has ever done and we thought she nailed it. Our guest this week is DJ, podcaster and author Annie MacManus - more widely known as Annie Mac - who came on to talk about her second book The Mess We're In. The London-based Dubliner's debut novel Mother, Mother was set in Belfast but her latest is about Orla, a young woman who moves to London at the turn of the millennium and her chaotic adventures as she tries to make it in the music industry and find home in a brand new place. MacManus talked to podcast host Roisin Ingle about the concept of home, her life and work in London, leaving BBC Radio 1 after 17 years and “politely” turning down an MBE last summer. Nick and Angela welcome DJ, broadcaster, author and one of Nick's superstar friends, Annie MacManus. Annie is a force in the music industry. For seventeen years, she was a pillar of BBC Radio, dedicating each show to championing the best in new music on programmes like Radio 1's Future Sounds, Dance Party and, of course, her Sunday evening show with Grimmy - simply called Nick Grimshaw and Annie Mac. She runs the festival Lost & Found in Malta, and in early 2022, Annie launched her Before Midnight club night, with the aim of providing a more accessible clubbing experience for those who prefer an early night. In 2021, she released her debut novel, the Sunday Times Bestseller Mother Mother, to critical acclaim. Her next novel, The Mess We're in is out in May 2023, and has roots in her own life story. Annie produces her own podcast, Changes with Annie Macmanus, which provides a perfect platform for the trio to discuss their 2023 resolutions. Grimmy serves vodka martinis and Angela prepares a recipe from Nathan Outlaw: scallops with ginger-spiced lemon butter and a side of pickled carrots, paired with a Waitrose Blanc de Noirs Champagne. Nick and Annie reminisce about their wild radio days, Angela exposes Annie's questionable culinary skills and Annie shares what it's like to be a mum to two small boys - doing all of the above... Just so you know, our podcast might contain the occasional mild swear word or adult theme. All recipes from this podcast can be found at waitrose.com/dishrecipes A transcript for this episode can be found at waitrose.com/dish We can't all have a Michelin star chef in the kitchen, but you can ask Angela for help.  Send your questions to dish@waitrose.co.uk and she'll try to answer in a future episode. Dish is a Somethin:Else Creative Studio production for Waitrose & Partners.

Annie Macmanus is a voice we've been hearing for twenty years. First as a presenter and tastemaker for the UK's biggest dance music radio show, as a festival headlining DJ, as host of her podcast ‘Changes with Annie Macmanus', and now as an author of her best-selling novel ‘Mother Mother'. Reaching the pinnacle of success with a relentless schedule headlining a 2am show in Ibiza every week before flying back in the morning to present her daily radio show, it took the pandemic lockdowns for Annie to realise she wanted something completely different from her life. So she started again. This conversation explores her decision to check in with herself and walk away from a 17 year career at the BBC to explore her passions of writing and podcasts. She presents the challenging notion that your life needs to have a revolution every 20 years for it to remain meaningful and fulfilling. One Saturday morning, TJ McConnell wakes up to find his mother, Mary, gone. He doesn't know where - or why - but he's the only one who can help find her. Mary grew up longing for information about the mother she never knew. Her brother could barely remember her, and their father numbed his pain with drink. Now aged thirty-seven, Mary has lived in the same house her whole life. She's never left Belfast. TJ, who's about to turn eighteen, is itching to see more of the world. But when his mother disappears, TJ begins to realise what he's been taking for granted. MOTHER MOTHER takes us down the challenging road of Mary's life while following TJ's increasingly desperate search for her, as he begins to discover what has led her to this point. This is a story about family, grief, addiction and motherhood, and it asks an important question - if you spend your life giving everything to the ones you love, do you risk losing yourself along the way?

My guest this week is a business woman, broadcaster, curator, tastemaker and DJ. She headlines festivals, hosts one of BBC Radio 1's flagship shows, was Europe's biggest female DJ and has her own hit podcast Changes with Annie Mac. And now, as if that wasn't e-bloody-nough (bc let's not forget the two kids), Annie Macmanus has written her first novel, Mother Mother.
