Rose and Doug Phillips asked: “how can we spend every day, together, doing what we love?” Their answer was Conscious Clothing. For two decades they built their business on this premise - even building the gorgeous, sun-filled Michigan studio where their team of ten designs and makes each piece of organic and natural fiber clothing. Things haven't always been dreamy, though. As the brand grew, work started to creep into the weekends. The pandemic hit. Then Doug lost his life and business partner. But, the heartfelt vision for Conscious Clothing remained. In this interview, Doug and General Manager Liz DeBraber share how they're intentionally restructuring the business for the sake of themselves, their team, and their customers. Doug Phillips is the owner of Conscious Clothing, an organic and natural fiber clothing company based in the Grand Rapids Michigan area. While navigating the challenges of designing and manufacturing in the US for over 23 years against a flood of cheap clothing imports, a mission was born. Exemplifying how a better way is possible by supporting local and organic is better for people and the planet. Doug hopes everyone realizes their power to create change with the purchase power they have and the brands they choose to support. This episode explores: Fitting the customer How Liz is completely revamping Conscious Clothing's pattern library to better fit their customers The process behind extending their sizing from XS-XL to XS-6X. How their small team things about customer service Fitting the lifestyle How founders Doug and Rose built the business from the ground up to realize the life they wanted together What they changed to keep the growing business from taking over their life How a years-long season of grief forced Doug to make big changes in the business Why sustainability is just as much about the lifestyle of the team than it is about the products they are making How they are balancing R&D with production Fitting the values Why organic and natural fibers and made-in-USA production are important to Conscious Clothing How the industry and consumer values about organic clothing has changed over the 20+ years they've been in business Why Doug is happy that Conscious Clothing is not as unique as it once was People and resources mentioned in this episode: Conscious Clothing website Conscious Clothing Instagram Fox fiber® - breeder and grower of organic, naturally colored cotton Do you want fashion business tips and resources like this sent straight to your inbox? The Wear Who You Are team is back with an Industry Insider episode, featuring Doug Phillips of Conscious Clothing. Host Natalie Tincher is tapping into her Midwest upbringing for this conversation with the co-founder and owner of this sustainably and ethically made company, based out of Michigan. Conscious Clothing is notable for its commitment to using eco-friendly materials and low-impact dyes, as well as being completely American designed, sourced, and made. As if all of that wasn't enough, Conscious Clothing also has a profoundly moving story.Doug has also experienced a great deal of personal loss. So we talk about it. What's it like building a business with the love of your life, and then how does that business have to change when you lose your partner to a brutal cancer battle? How can you possibly keep going? How does your business evolve? How do you evolve?Natalie and Doug also talk about what it was like during COVID and the importance of keeping your staff employed, and even now how challenging it is on a day-to-day basis to stay in business as an American-made, organic clothing manufacturer with deeply held convictions. We cover it all: made to order, staying lean, small batch, athletic wear fabrics, how there's so much collateral damage from the fashion industry, how we can vote with our dollars, and why FoxFibre® is so completely amazing. Natalie also walks Doug through his Style Six Assessment results and puts Doug through the wringer with our new "10 in 2" segment!Pull up a seat! Give to help Chris make Truce RJ Rushdoony is not a household name. But he influenced a lot of interesting people, from members of the New Right to the Christian homeschooling movement. His books and lectures inspired people to pull their kids out of public schools and teach them at home. But who was RJ Rushdoony? He was deeply impacted by his time doing missionary work on a Native American reservation. There he saw how difficult it was to get anything done and to give people proper access to their government. He went on to work with libertarian organizations like Spiritual Mobilization and the Volker Fund. His mentor Cornelius Van Til taught him to see the triad of government, church, and family in a new way. In Rushdoony's mind, those three spheres should not interfere with each other. BUT, he did want Christians to run the government. Instead of doing a top-down change, he wanted change to begin with families, then rise to the church, eventually taking over the political sphere. Howard Phillips, one of the founders of the New Right, was a disciple of Rushdoony. So was his son, Doug Phillips, who founded the homeschooling movement known as Vision Forum. In this episode, Chris interviews Paul Hastings of the Compelled podcast about how they met at a Vision Forum film festival. The special guest for today is Michael McVicar, author of "Christian Reconstruction: R.J. Rushdoony and American Religious Conservatism." Sources: Christian Reconstruction: R.J. Rushdoony and American Religious Conservatism by Michael McVicar Reaganland by Rick Perlstein The Evangelicals by Frances Fitzgerald Helpful article about libertarian philosophy One Nation Under God by Kevin Kruse Discussion Questions: How do you think Rushdoony was impacted by his experiences on the reservation? What is libertarianism? What do you think about it? In what ways have you seen libertarianism presented in evangelical culture? What did Rushdoony think about public schools? How was this a departure from progressive-era Christian thinkers? How does Christian homeschooling differ from other forms of homeschooling? Why did homeschooling take off in the 1980s and 1990s? What role, if any, should Christians play in public schools? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

A good pair of polasrised sunglasses is almost as important as a rod and reel, especially if you're in a high-glare situation like coral flats, bluewater, whit sandy beaches or...... let's face it just about any situation. Apart from protecting your eyes from UV, quality sunglasses enhance your comfort and enjoyment of time spent fishing. It's no secret that after wearing numerous sunglass brands over the years I have fallen in love with Tonic sunglasses. For me, they're at the top end of quality without the high price ticket. So today I've brought Tonic Director Doug Phillips onto the podcast to talk about eyewear for anglers generally, but the Tonic offering in particular. And for those wanting to support the ALF podcast AND get into a great pair of Tonic sunglasses at an awesome price, I've put a special deal together. Sunnies, plus $120 of gifts for less than the retail price of the sunniws alone! You can check it out here: https://doclures.com/tonic

One of the hardest things for a man to do just might be to show how strong they really are by allowing themselves to be vulnerable, let their guard down and talk about their own fears and weaknesses. By allowing ourselves to be vulnerable, we give permission for others to talk openly about the things that are usually too uncomfortable to talk about. In part two of my conversation with Doug Phillips, we're going to dig into that theme and talk about the things we can accomplish if we can just let go of our pride and be honest with ourselves so that we can learn and grow to be better husbands and fathers to our families. You'll hear how the pandemic forced Doug's hand to find a new way to provide for his family and how a band of brothers were able to help him get over his fears and take that first step in his entrepreneurial journey. We also talk about how it's so important, maybe even more than ever, to check in on our friends and family because you never really know how someone is doing. Just because someone's life seems bright and near-perfect from the outside, that doesn't mean that they don't feel alone in the darkness with their own thoughts. And if you haven't listened to part one of my conversation with Doug, I highly recommend that you go back and check that out here. Hearing about the affirmation traditions that his family uses was awesome, and I know you'll get a lot of value from hearing him talk about it. Doug Phillips Podcast Highlights How Covid impacted Doug's livelihood and how he found a new path to provide for his family. Having a support system to challenge you and help to overcome the fear of the unknown can lead to huge successes. Why being in a band with the right mix of people makes a big difference and can lead to deeper conversations. Being vulnerable gives permission to others to join the conversation and talk about the things that are usually too uncomfortable to open up about. How we need to check in with each other, because you never know if someone is having dark moments even though their life looks very bright on the outside. If we're willing to be honest and open with each other with our dark thoughts, oftentimes we quickly realize that we're not alone. When was the last time somebody wrote you a letter? Not a text message, or a quick email, but something that was a complete surprise to tell you how much they care about you, and how much you mean to them. I'm sure most of us do our very best to tell the ones we love how much we appreciate them. But there's just something about having that message written or typed out on paper that makes it really special. On that note, I want to talk about creating a culture of encouragement. And how we can get better at celebrating the big moments in our kids' lives to make sure that on their day, it's all about them. In this conversation, I'm joined by my good friend and fellow Front Row Dad, Doug Phillips. I can't wait for you to hear about the awesome tradition that he has with his family. I won't even lie, I am totally going to use this concept with my family and I'm sure a lot of you out there listening probably will too. To give you a quick glimpse, when Doug was planning for his son's 13th birthday, he reached out to a bunch of people who were influential in his son's life with the goal of getting 13 responses. And he asked them if they would write a letter (or email) to his son. In the letter, each person was asked to answer two very simple questions: What character qualities do you appreciate about him? Since you know what it's like to be a 13 year old, what advice would you give him? And to hear about his son reading these letters from teachers, friends, coaches and other parents was beyond profound. It's such an amazing and unique gift. And the best part is that it's something that everyone can do with their family. So join me, as we dig in for part one of my chat with Doug as we talk about how we can find and create mentors for our kids, how this tradition has created deeper connections with the people in his life, and the impact that these affirmation traditions are having in their lives. One last thing, we are a few weeks away from our next online summit which is happening on March 24th. The next pillar that we'll be talking about is on the topic of Vibrant Health. If you want some more information on this, go to FrontRowDads.com/Summit. Doug Phillips Podcast Highlights The incredible tradition that Doug's family has created by asking for letters from other people who were influential in his kids' lives. How these letters created such a unique, personalized and impactful gift. What advice would you give to a 13 year old that you wished you had when you were their age? How children with divorced parents often struggle to find mentors. The importance of celebrating your child's birthdays, and making sure they feel loved, appreciated and experience gratitude. The weekly tradition that Doug's family has with other parents at their kids school where they meet and plan an activity for the whole group. How the family affirmation traditions help to not only send, but receive gratitude from others. It's great to have these routines and rituals, but it's very easy to get away from them. As an artist and a creative, one of the most valuable skills you can learn is how to engage people with storytelling. Stories are the way we process information and make sense of the world around us. I'm excited today to bring you this conversation with a friend who helps us learn from the greatest storyteller of all time: Jesus. Today I'm thrilled to be talking with Doug Phillips, who is the Professor of New Testament and Greek Studies, and the Chair of the Biblical Education Division at St. Louis Christian College, where I am also a Professor. Doug has multiple advanced degrees and is also working on a PhD in New Testament from Asbury Theological Seminary. On this episode, we're going to do a deep dive into the topic of storytelling in the Bible. Doug shares his journey to becoming a professor and helps us understand why Jesus' parables were so powerful. You'll learn what makes an effective story, the key components of Jesus' parables, and how to start applying those lessons to your own communication. Episode Highlights In this episode, you'll discover: How Doug became a Christian college professor. Why Doug had to learn 5 languages for his Ph.D program. What draws particular people to Old Testament or New Testament studies. What a parable is, and why Jesus used them. Why Jesus' stories have a shock value (and why your stories should have it also). The value of reading your Bible slowly and carefully. Why the story of Esther is so dramatically satisfying. Keys to understanding parables, including: time elements, characters (clothing, speech, etc.), storyline, rising and falling tension, and narrative foils. Practical steps for becoming a more effective communicator, no matter what your field. Key takeaways: 1. Understand your audience. It's vital that we speak to our listeners or readers in a way where they can relate. Jesus knew his audience and used stories that spoke to their needs and concerns. Take time to identify your ideal audience member or customer and think about how to communicate to them in a way they understand. 2. Use an inductive approach in your communication. It doesn't work to just say, “Here's what you should think, believe, or do.” A much better approach is to lead people in a way where they come to a conclusion on their own. Help people process the information you want them to know. As the saying goes, “You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.” Good storytelling can help us lead people instead of pushing them. 3. Study the Bible to improve your communication. It's easy to separate your spiritual life from your business or creative work. But you can learn a lot by studying the communication techniques and the literary genres of the Bible. Today's audiences have a short attention span. Whether you're a writer, speaker, podcaster, pastor, or other type of communicator, there is a lot you can learn from Jesus' short, punchy style of storytelling. In addition, a large percentage of the Bible is some form of narrative—40% of the Old Testament, and much of the New Testament (the Gospels, Acts, and most of Revelation.) So, there are a lot of stories that not only teach us on a spiritual and historical level, they also help us to become better storytellers if we are willing to pay attention and learn from this ancient book that is living and active in our lives today.
