He also pointed to the new risks the construction industry is facing, the challenges of explaining how the industry works to those not versed in its intricacies and how technology should be approached on a case-by-case basis depending on its return on investment.  This week Daily Commercial News staff writers Don Wall, Angela Gismondi and digital media editor Warren Frey attended the Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships conference in Toronto and our news roundup includes a discussion between CCPPP president and CEO Lisa Mitchell and Peter Fragiskatos the parliamentary secretary to the minister of housing, infrastructure and communities about the ongoing housing crisis, another session about Ontario's nuclear ambitions, and coverage of a panel analyzing why America's moves into the P3 space may be more of a learning opportunity than a threat for Canada. In Hailing the State: Indian Democracy Between Elections (Duke UP, 2023), Lisa Mitchell explores the methods of collective assembly that people in India use to hold elected officials and government administrators accountable, demand inclusion in decision making, and stage informal referendums. Mitchell traces the colonial and postcolonial lineages of collective forms of assembly, in which—rather than rejecting state authority—participants mobilize with expectations that officials will uphold the law and fulfill electoral promises.  She shows how assembly, which ranges from sit-ins, hunger strikes, and demands for meetings with officials to massive general strikes and road and rail blockades, is fundamental to the functioning of democracy in India. These techniques are particularly useful for historically marginalized groups and others whose voices may not be easily heard. Moving beyond an exclusive focus on electoral processes, Mitchell argues that to understand democracy—both in India and beyond—we must also pay attention to what occurs between elections, thereby revising understanding of what is possible for democratic action around the world. The Empowerment Dynamic with several clients, both individuals and large groups.   These clients were falling into the drama roles and staying there too long.  Knowing this framework provides a powerful and practical mental model that can help you become more self-aware and more able to shift OUT of unhelpful stories and behaviours and INTO empowering antidote roles. So it occurred to me that, since my clients love it, and so do I, I should share it with YOU here on the podcast. In this episode of Talent Management Truths, you'll discover:

The Long Thread Podcast

After decades as an art therapist in suburban Sacramento, Lisa Mitchell and her husband, Greg Hudson, were ready for a radical life change. In her rewarding but exhausting career, Lisa spent her days harnessing the power of art and handwork to heal others, but she had little time to do it herself. Their concrete-jungle surroundings felt stifling. It was time for a radical, meaningful life change, one that would bring them more in touch with real materials, real experiences, real presence. They found a farm property in Whidbey Island, Washington, a fiber nexus for weavers, spinners, small mills, and small farms. And they set out in search of the right animals for their fiber farm. At the Lambtown Festival in Dixon, Greg found them: a mother guanaco and chulengo (baby). Guanacos are probably the least known camelid, the wild ancestor of llamas domesticated in the Andes thousands of years ago. Llamas are not uncommon in North America as pack, fiber, and guard animals, and although not cuddly, they have been bred for generations to be handled and interact with humans. Guanacos have not. Even the descendants of guanacos brought to United States zoos in the 1960s retain the wild nature of their Andean relatives. And unlike their cousins the vicuñas, who have similar huge dark eyes and coat distribution, guanacos are big. Greg and Lisa found themselves with a herd of animals tall enough to look them straight in the eye... but who really don't want to, thank you very much. Raising guanacos has challenged the couple in more ways than they could have expected, but the lessons learned in the barn and on the farm have brought Greg and Lisa the very real and present life they had hoped to create. Besides the guanacos, they raise pygora goats and angora rabbits on the farm, and a friend raises a small flock of colored Merinos on their behalf. "So, now we raise animals for their fiber and make things with what they grow," Lisa says. "And I write about the discoveries we make along the way." We'll be talking about his latest #1 New York Times bestselling young adult novel, Two Degrees and the controversy over the Kutztown Area School District's canceling their "One Book, Once School" middle school program that was set to read Two Degrees. Why did they cancel reading his book? It's a familiar story of right-wing extremism infecting our schools. Right-wing members on the school board and in the community objected to reading a book that accepted the reality and the threats posed by climate change.  On April 15th, Gratz will be one of the Featured Speakers at the 25th Annual Kutztown University Children's Literature Conference. In the wake of the decision by the Kutztown Area School District to cancel their "One School, One Book" program, he made extra time to meet with the community while in town. He will be doing two events at Firefly Bookstore in Kutztown on April 15th as well. At the evening event, he will be interviewed by Joslyn Diffenbaugh, founder of the local Teen Banned Book Club. Details for the events can be found on Firefly Bookstore's Facebook page and through the links in the show notes.  Alan Gratz is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of nineteen novels and graphic novels for young readers, including Two Degrees, Captain America: The Ghost Army, Ground Zero, Refugee, Allies, Prisoner B-3087, and Ban This Book. 91. The Slow Living Shift: From Striving to Savoring with Fiber Farmer Lisa Mitchell

The Good Dirt

Fiber farmer Lisa Mitchell encourages listeners to embrace a beginner's mindset and connect to the earth through handwork and making as she tells us the story of her major life shift,  from striving for success as an art therapist in the suburbs, to slow living on a guanaco farm in the Pacific Northwest. Guanacos, the undomesticated ancestors of the alpaca, produce a unique and high-quality wool, but are often challenging to work with, and are not commonly farmed in the United States. In the absence of mentors and educational resources, Lisa and her husband set about spending significant time learning how to care for these special animals through experience, trial, and error, resulting in a fiber farm producing the highest quality wool on the market. Lisa seeks to “live with her hands” as she creates, and to practice making as an act of love - for the animals she lives alongside, for other people, and for the earth. Topics Covered: Seeking a different life Guanacos and Guanaco Wool Learning to Work with Natural Fibers Working with Natural Dye Embracing Beginner's Mind Creating as an Act of Love Connecting with Reality Through Hand Work Resources Mentioned:  http://www.blacksheepgathering.org/ (Black Sheep Gathering) Guest Info: https://afiberlife.com/shop/ (Lisa Mitchell's Website and Online Store, A Fiber Life) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/afiberlife/?hl=en (@afiberlife) Podcast: https://afiberlife.com/podcast/ (https://afiberlife.com/podcast/) Follow Us: https://lady-farmer.com/blogs/the-good-dirt-podcast (Our Website) @weareladyfarmer on Instagram http://almanac.lady-farmer.com/ (The Lady Farmer ALMANAC) Original music by John Kingsley @jkingsley1026 Statements in this podcast have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration and are not to be considered as medical or nutritional advice.
