I'm planning on doing a bunch of Star Wars coverage in 2025, so I figured why not kick off the year by re-releasing our Holiday Special episode, which Kieran, Paul and I recorded back in 2018 for the sister podcast Easy Riders Raging Podcast, as part of its 1970s series.

An adventure 65 million years in the making!!! So, today I finally sat down and edited the conversation Kieran and I had about about Steven Spielberg's 'West Side Story' that we recorded way way back in May 2022. Apologies for taking so long to get to this but I hope you enjoy the conversation. (I'm going to get to 'The Fablemans' too- I promise!) Oh, and if you want to check out our conversation on the original 'West Side Story', this is available on the sister podcast- Easy Riders Raging Podcast- and was one of our earliest episodes.
Chris Johnston (Easy Riders Raging Podcast) and Em (Verbal Diorama: A Film History Podcast) join Flixwatcher to review Chris' choice Parasite. Parasite (2019) is a South Korean black comedy thriller directed by Bong (Snowpiercer)Joon-ho. It tells the story of the working class Kim family who infiltrate the wealthy Park household. The Kim family live in a basement flat, steal their neighbours WiFi and make money doing low paid jobs, like folding pizza boxes. When Ki-woo is given an in teaching English by his university friend in the Park house the Kim family work together to find jobs for all the family members. In this pursuit they force out the Park's long serving maid who is hiding a secret in a hidden basement under the Park house. Parasite became the first South Korean film to win the Palme d'Or. It also became the first non-English language film in Academy Awards history to win Best Picture and it ended up winning four Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film. Unsurprisingly recommendability scores for Parasite were extremely high, Flixwatcher and guests calling it a masterpiece. Strong scores for Parasite across the other categories give an overall score of 4.56. Okay, when I open this episode with "Recorded a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away" it turns out I'm a 1000% correct as this episode- where Paul, Kieran and I discuss Ron Howard's 'Solo: A Star Wars Story'- was recorded allllllllll the way back in May 2020. Yep, this was one of our early pandemic recordings, recorded during the very first lockdown. So expect a couple of references (both Star Wars and otherwise) to be more than a little dated, but it's a fun conversation between three Star Wars fans who have lots of thoughts on this movie. Oh, and 'the sister podcast' mentioned early on- Easy Riders Raging Podcast- is now (in 2023) on it's 4th series, where we are talking about 1980s films, TV and music videos. Obviously our 1950s run is still available from all good podcast places.
Happy New Year listeners! Season 4 of the podcast is coming soon but we here at Easy Riders Raging Podcast want to start your 2023 with a bang and so here's our episode on Sergio Leone's 'A Fistful of Dollars'. This episode was recorded as a Patreon exclusive episode (over at https://www.patreon.com/ErrP) but now it's free to listen to, for your audio entertainment. Enjoy!
Liam H Dempsey (Spocklight podcast) and Chris Johnston (Easy Riders Raging Podcast, The Spielberg pod) return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Liam's choice Jack Reacher. Jack Reacher is the 2012 action thriller based on Lee Child's novel One Shot starring Tom Cruise as Reacher and directed by Christopher McQuarrie. Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, Jai Courtney, Robert Duvall and Werner Herzog also star. A former US Army sniper James Barr is accused of killing five seemingly random people in broad daylight. Evidence would indicate a clear cut case but under interrogation Barr writes "Get Jack Reacher" and it becomes apparent all is not what it would seem. Highlights of Jack Reacher are undoubtedly Werner Herzog's Zek, who manages to steal every scene he is in and has the best lines “I chewed these fingers off before the frostbite could turn to gangrene.” The action is fairly solid but doesn't quite hit the same as the Cruise - McQuarrie Mission Impossibles. Scores for Jack Reacher were firmly in the threes, not great but not bad, regardless of whether Cruise was too short to play Reacher and it scores a very solid 3.25 overall. Chris Johnston (Easy Riders Raging Podcast) and Liam H Dempsey (Spocklight podcast) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Chris' choice The Mitchells vs. the Machines. The Mitchells vs. the Machines is a 2021 animated family comedy produced by Sony Pictures Animation and Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie). It was scheduled for a cinema release but due to Covid restrictions was released on Netflix in April 2021. The Mitchells are outdoors loving, tech hating dad Rick and peacemaker and baking enthusiast mum Linda. They live in a small town in Michigan with their children Katie (aspiring filmmaker) and Aaron (dinosaur fanatic) and their pug dog Monchi. On the evening before Katie leaves for college to start her dream course in filmmaking she falls out with dad Rick. To try and save their relationship he cancels her flight to instead drive her there in a last chance attempt at a family bonding adventure. At the same time, a highly intelligent AI PAL launches an attack against the human race and orders an army of robots to capture humans. It is left to the Mitchells to stop them and save humanity. Benefiting from fast-paced and frenetic storytelling with pop culture memes and viral videos this was a huge lockdown hit for adults and children last year. Sadly, despite the enthusiasm for The Mitchells vs. the Machines from Flixwatcher and guests, it did not win Best Animated film at the Oscars but it did however score a very respectable 3.84 overall. In this episode we discuss supernatural horror 'Night of the Demon' (AKA 'Curse of the Demon'). Expect discussion of Snakes and Ladders, some train talk and also comparisons to the X-Files and The Omen. NOTE- This ep was recorded prior to the death of Christopher Plummer, which is why we talk about him being alive. He is sadly missed by all at Easy Riders Raging Podcast.
In this episode- recorded back in the pre-COVID times- Kieran and I sat down to discuss 'On the Waterfront' from director Elia Kazan. And this is a lively episode, not least because of my Scarlett Johansson impression/ a fun impromptu game where we look at the career of Julia Roberts. NOTE- This ep was recorded prior to the death of Sir Sean Connery, which is why we talk about him being alive. He is sadly missed by all at Easy Riders Raging Podcast.
In this episode- our second Ealing Comedies episode- we discuss one of the most beloved British films of all-time, 'The Ladykillers'. She is sadly missed by all at Easy Riders Raging Podcast.

We've talked about manic pixie dream girls (and boys!) this summer and the wasted talents of Blake Lively as a damsel in distress from SAVAGES... so now it's time for something good. GREAT, even. Of course that can't be lowly MARK AS PLAYED but what we can do is watch and talk about something great in Steven Spielberg's SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. Tom Hanks saving the damsel in distress Matt Damon. State of the Sitcom continues... The miniseries takes a break from stateside sitcoms & brings the focus to a little flat in North London. In our fourth adventure we're joined by @Chris Johnston, the superbly prolific host of Easy Riders Raging Podcast and The Spielberg Pod to discuss the UK cult classic, Spaced. Quoting the show as if we're its main characters, our passion for this unsung slice of comedy fried gold is evident from the start as we break down why it was so important to us, how it transformed the landscape of British comedy and what the wider cultural impact of Edgar Wright, Jessica Hynes & Simon Pegg's homage-o-meter truly is. Tune in next week for more special guests who seek to pop 'Inside' the deeper moments in sitcom history! Happy Sitcom-ing, JoJ x
It's the whip-smart cult comedy that revived Robert Downey Jr.'s career and rescued us from the prospect of Johnny Knoxville headlining the Iron Man Franchise. Shane Black's Kiss Kiss Bang Bang combines classic Neo Noir references with a distinctly 21st century sensibility, making it just the kind of curious genre-crossover we love to sink our teeth into... With the invaluable assistance of our special guest Chris Johnston of Easy Riders Raging Podcast, we attempt to wrap our heads around the insanely convoluted plot of this movie, debate whether it's OK to shamelessly objectify your female lead if you make a point of being self aware about it and question just what exactly the root cause might be of Val Kilmer's increasingly alarming facial dimensions... Naturally we also get down to some sequel ideas, which this week include a Rush Hour-inspired location switch, a deconstruction of the original movie's obsession with gay panic jokes and a lot of really terrible plays on the title. Kiss Kiss Cillit Bang, anyone? ------ Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we take a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. We've covered everything from timeless blockbusters to beloved cult classics, and quite possibly ruined them all with our sacreligious and frequently unfilmable reboot concepts. Back with a bang, Easy Riders Raging Podcast returns to tackle a new decade - the 1970s. Considered by many to be THE decade, when it comes to quality filmmaking. We begin with a discussion between Jev and I on a solid gold horror classic.... 'The Exorcist'.
Its Episode 35 and Kobi and Helen are joined by Chris (Easy Riders, Raging Podcasts) and Adam (Little White Lies/LWL Truth & Movies) and we’re reviewing the Al Pacino classic, Serpico, Adam’s choice. Frank Serpico is a honest, by the book New York City cop in the 1970’s not content with fighting crime on the streets he turns his attention to bringing down corrupt cops. Largely considered a classic, this Sidney Lumet film marks the beginning of what would become the defining period in his career, he earned his first Best Actor Oscar nomination for this and went on to make The Godfather Part II, Dog Day Afternoon and And Justice for All (which all earned other Oscar nominations). Serpico himself is a loner, aloof and a bit odd, subject to regular outbursts of anger its a perfect vehicle for the what we know now as the trademark Pacino performance and New York is the gritty, shady backdrop and supporting character. Scores [supsystic-tables id=37] It doesn’t quite live up to its classic status for Helen and Chris but still scores slightly over a respectable 3, boosted by Adam and Kobi’s more favourable points. It does however feature some outstanding fashion statements from Pacino and solid dog performance, so if you’re into THAT this film is for you. What do you guys think? Have you seen Serpico? What did you think? Please let us know in the comments below!
