On the previous episode of this podcast, I spoke with Jason Morgan, editor of Fleet Equipment, about the EV advancements we can expect to see in the next few years, the solutions to the biggest issues facing electrification today and what an evolving supply chain means for the consumer world. We had a great time – we laughed, we cried, we sang (at least one of those definitely happened) – and after that episode's debut we decided we wanted to take things a step further. So... welcome to the first taping of the Amped EV Video Podcast!Jason is now this podcast's co-host, here to bring a fresh perspective on what electrification means for trucking and logistics, the yin to the consumer world's yang, if you will. And, there's more where this came from beginning in 2022. Double, actually, as we're bumping up our volume to produce two video podcasts a month. In this episode, we discuss some of the latest electrification research from NACFE, as well as some of the fun EV-focused vehicles and products found at the 2021 SEMA Show in Las Vegas (including Jeep, Electra Meccanica, Hypercraft and Redline Detection).

Aaron Gold is a veteran automobile writer who has contributed to many print and online publications. He's as enthusiastic about his work as anyone in the industry, and it shows in his articles and in conversation. A staff writer for Automobile, Gold is our guest on this week's episode of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia discuss the automotive industry with the journalist, with a particular interest in several of his recent articles. Automobile writer Aaron Gold discusses the Bricklin and many other Canadian cars on this episode of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Canada isn't an automotive powerhouse, but Gold recently wrote: "Who Knew Canadian Cars Were a Thing? Well, They Are." The article detailed Bricklin Motors to Conquest Vehicles, Felino to Magnum, Electra Meccanica to McLaughlin and several unique offerings. We hadn't heard of several of the vehicles, which made Gold's article all the more interesting. Aaron Gold: Automobile Writer Has Fun Gold recently wrote: "Far Out and Funky Forgotten Cars of the 1970s Worth Remembering" and "The All-New 2021 Rolls-Royce Ghost Releases You From Sorrow." Automobile was founded in 1986 with the working motto: "No Boring Cars." The publication ceased its print edition in early 2020, but the online edition remains true to the publication's mission. Among other recent articles, Gold's has written: "How I Met Your Mother: Chevrolet's Bad-Ass Monte Carlo" and "Bugging Out: We Take a 1949 VW Beetle on a Fascinating 1949 Architectural Tour." And we couldn't help ourselves. We thoroughly enjoyed talking about another article: "Far Out and Funky: 12 Forgotten Cars of the 1970s That Are Worth Remembering." Cars are serious business. Show #875 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 25th August 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Unplugged Performance Tesla Climbs Pikes Peak https://twitter.com/UnpluggedTesla https://twitter.com/Out_of_Spec HOW MCLAREN PLANS TO GO HYBRID "McLaren has revealed a new platform that’ll provide the basis for a new generation of electrified supercars. It’s essentially a new, lighter carbonfibre-based platform that’s made with hybrid powertrains in mind. If McLaren’s own Formula 1 activities are anything to go by, that means downsized, turbo-powered engines coupled to a raft of batteries" writes CAR magazine: "McLaren hasn’t announced what the hybrid platform will make its debut, but we do know Woking is working on a hybrid cars. Our spy photographers snapped pictures of hybrid 72S mule late last year, but we’ve also got exclusive pictures of an all-new Sports Series McLaren testing – once again with a hybrid badge." https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/hybrid/mclaren/ ELECTRAMECCANICA ENDS ODD GESTATION OF THE SOLO EV "Better late than never is the perfect statement for what is going on with Canadian sustainable mobility company ElectraMeccanica and its long, awfully long, preparation to produce the single-seat, three-wheeled Solo EV." says Autoevolution: "The ElectraMeccanica Solo EV has a fully enclosed concept akin to a car and just three wheels, as well as a single-seat cockpit. he “purpose-built, all-electric, three-wheeled vehicle for the modern urban environment” has been developed for a range of more than 100 miles on a single charge and a maximum speed of 80 mph." Whereas LA Magazine has an interesting take on linking the Solo to the pandemic: "The makers of a single-seat, all-electric vehicle are doubling down on the concept that driving alone may be the ultimate in social distancing. They’re hoping people will embrace this latest eco-friendly mode of transportation, both during and after the pandemic. “It just so happens that it’s a perfect vehicle for COVID even though it wasn’t designed for that purpose,” explains Paul Riviera, CEO of Electra Meccanica. the three-wheeled electric vehicle drives like a car, complete with doors that open on both sides, air conditioning, a backup camera, an integrated roll bar, and a seatbelt, and can hit the highway at speeds of 80 mph. Still, it doesn’t have to go through the same kind of strict crash safety testing as vehicles on four wheels." https://www.autoevolution.com/news/electrameccanica-ends-odd-gestation-of-the-solo-ev-ready-to-start-production-147813.html https://www.lamag.com/lalifeandstyle/this-single-seat-electric-vehicle-is-positioning-itself-as-the-perfect-pandemic-ride/ TESLA BATTERY DAY AMPING UP AS NANOWIRE TECH CO MOVES NEXT DOOR TO "ROADRUNNER" SITE "After Tesla announced the upcoming Battery Day and Annual Shareholders Meeting, speculation immediately began. Tesla chose a very interesting background image for the announcement. If we enlarge the background and enhance the contrast, there are some hints of battery chemistry, or possibly nanowires." according to TEsmanian: "Now there is new information that points to possible collaboration between Tesla and Amprius Technologies. Amprius manufactures and distributes batteries, and their research and development is dedicated to the silicon nanowire anode. At the end of June, Tesla applied for the redevelopment of two buildings at 47700 Kato Road and 1055 Page. Kato Road will be used to host additional production and R&D operations supporting ROADRUNNER, including a portion of cathode electrode manufacturing and the final process step in battery cell manufacturing." And guess where Amprius has moved to? The building next door to Tesla. This is more than just a Twitter conspiracy theory says Teslarati: "Amprius notes that it is working on creating silicon nanowires for battery anodes that dramatically improve battery weight and density. The company’s website notes that silicon generally has about 10x the capacity of graphite (carbon), but it has a big drawback in the way that it swells when it’s charged, causing the silicon to fracture. To address this, Amprius utilizes silicon nanowires, which keeps the silicon from fracturing and breaking apart even when it swells." https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-battery-day-spice-up-with-a-nanowire-tech-co-moved-in-right-next-to-the-roadrunner-site https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-roadrunner-facility-amprius-acquisition-million-mile-battery/ TESLA MODEL 3'S NEW FRUNK DESIGN LIKELY MEANS MORE RANGE IMPROVEMENTS "One of the critical differences between the Tesla Model Y and the Tesla Model 3 it’s built upon was the redesigned front end that made room for a new heat pump, which the 3 didn’t have at the time, and still apparently doesn’t." reports Jalopnik: "a new Tesla Model 3 with a redesigned frunk space was delivered to a Canadian customer recently, and the DriveTeslaCanada forums, via Roadshow, have since speculated this could mean the Model 3 will soon be getting upgraded to have the Model Y’s traditional heat pump. That would mean more energy from the battery for range and other fun. While the effect on the car’s performance would ultimately likely be minimal for most drivers, the true benefit of a heat pump on an electric vehicle is evident in cold weather." https://jalopnik.com/the-tesla-model-3s-new-frunk-design-likely-means-more-r-1844830938 RECORD BREAKING ALL-ELECTRIC DRIVE TO SWITZERLAND The new Volkswagen ID.3¹ has set its first range record: The electric car covered the 531 kilometers (329 miles) from Zwickau to Schaffhausen (Switzerland) on a single charge. Officially, the model has a range of up to 420 kilometers (WLTP). This mark was topped by more than 100 kilometers – an increase of 26 percent. The vehicle was a series production ID.3 1st Pro Performance with a 58 kWh battery built at the Zwickau electric car factory. The route to Switzerland consisted entirely of public roads and highways, passing cities such as Bayreuth and Ulm. The record-breaking vehicle was driven by “hypermiler” Felix Egolf, a native of Switzerland. The term “hypermiling” originated in the USA and refers to driving a series production vehicle with techniques that maximize efficiency and minimize consumption. https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/stories/2020/08/record-breaking-all-electric-drive-to-switzerland.html JEEP WRANGLER 4XE PLUG-IN HYBRID WILL DEBUT THIS DECEMBER "Jeep’s plan to electrify its lineup by 2022 is well underway. In July, the brand revealed the Renegade and Compass 4xe PHEVs. Soon, they’ll be joined by another – the Wrangler 4xe. We first heard about Jeep’s electrified boxy off-roader in January with the automaker promising to share more information later this year. Time is running out, but it appears Jeep will fulfill its promise, announcing today it’ll reveal the Wrangler 4xe this December." reports Motor1: "Jeep uses a turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder to power its other PEHVs, but rumors persist the automaker will pair the Wrangler’s existing 3.6-liter V6 mill with the electrified components." https://www.motor1.com/news/440835/2021-jeep-wrangler-4xe-december-debut/ GREENE KING TO INSTALL CHARGING POINTS "Brewery and pub company Greene King is to install charging points for electric vehicles across all of its suitable pubs as the UK approaches the deadline for the sale of new petrol and diesel cars." writes The Independent: "The company has a portfolio of 2,700 managed and tenanted pubs, and the first phase of the roll out will see charging stations installed at 900 premises by the end of 2020. The company has signed an agreement with firms Raw Charging and Drive Energi to install the charging points. The first one was made available to customers earlier this month at The Churchill, in Royal Wootton Bassett." https://www.independent.co.uk/environment/electric-vehicle-charging-greene-king-pubs-a9686356.html FORD STARTS CONSTRUCTION ON NEW FACTORY FOR ELECTRIC F-150 PICKUP TRUCK "Ford has started construction on a new factory to build the upcoming electric F-150 pickup truck next to its current pickup factory in Dearborn, Michigan." says Electrek: "Ford sold about 900,000 F-Series pickup trucks last year, bringing in around $42 billion in revenue. The US automaker has a plan to bring an electric F-150 to market, but not much is known about it." And Bloomberg said: "Ford will temporarily shut a factory in Michigan next month to install machinery for the redesigned F-150 pickup going on sale next year. The automaker also is constructing a new facility adjacent to its Dearborn, Michigan, truck plant to build an electric version of the F-150, according to people familiar with the project. Prototype production is expected to start next year, said the people, who asked not to be identified revealing internal plans." https://electrek.co/2020/08/25/ford-construction-new-factory-electric-f-150-pickup-truck/ You can listen to all 874 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Thanks to an entrepreneurial itch, Bal Bhullar will never be a conventional CFO. In fact, her CFO resume may be the only one ever to include three-wheel electric cars alongside vitamin supplements. However, when it comes to finance milestones such as the $12 million in new financing on which Electra Meccanica closed last March, Bhullar is clearly marching in step with her professional peers. This being said, when your CEO is a former race car driver and you’re building three-wheel vehicles using Chinese parts in western Canada, a CFO would be more likely to attract the interest of People magazine than Wall Street investors. Nevertheless, Wall Street has been listening, and, as for many CFOs along the front lines, Bhullar has found that communication and relationship-building remain top-of-mind. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Monday 25th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. TESLA EMPLOYEE TWEETS ABOUT PRODUCTION RATES Elon Musk tweets about Tesla's production rates, the challenges, the successes. Dave from accounts does NOT. Linda from HR does NOT. John from the Gigafactory does NOT. Except, John Totah did exactly that yesterday. John Totah is the Lead Material Flow for Model 3 at Gigafactory 1 and a Twitter account using his name, so we're assuming it is really him, make some bold claims before they were swiftly deleted. John said: "Our original goal was 2,500/wk and we didn't hit it. Now we just hit 5,000/wk throughput in June. Insanely hard work by @Tesla team." If you didn't know that’s exactly the kind of language and tweet we would get from Elon. You know, the CEO. One of a handful of people on the planet who can comment publicly on Tesla. And not just because they're being precious but because the Q2 production and deliveries, whether batteries or completed cars, is potentially the most important announcement in the history of the company. This is the last week of the quarter. On the bright side that's a doubling in two months so understandably he's proud. He even had time to send a follow up, before he found the delete button: "We want to sustain over 5k/wk since current capacity of the lines are built for a max 6k/wk. It was incredibly difficult to hit 2500 in March. We revised many processes and built new systems that worked better. Incredible work and brain power." As you may have heard before on the podcast, when I was talking about the production lines heading from Tesla Grohmann Engineering in Germany to Nevada, to fix one of the four zones, that was when Elon replied directly to me to confirm it. Super exciting, so we knew they had a shutdown to speed up Gigafactory. And once JB Straubel was tasked with sorting out Zone 4 at Giga, and it would amazing new if true before batteries were a bottleneck at one point. He wasn't clear on his tweet whether the throughput was specifically about his area of responsibility, or overall Model 3 production rates at Giga. And remember none of this means Freemont is on target for 5,000 Model 3's week. The twitter account has now been protected. The news was reported on Reddit, Electrek etc, so I feel it can be reported on. ANOTHER TESLA INTERIOR UPDATE InternetDude: "So I finally got my 2018 Tesla Model S P100D. I ordered it with cream interior but it was supposed to have figured ash dark wood. Tesla made a production change just about 10 days after I ordered and changed almost all of the aluminium accents to dark graphite colour instead. They also changed to the wood to a natural oak decor finish, more like the Model 3." MAD MAX MODE FOR AUTOPILOT LANE CHANGE Elon has tweeted a picture of the centre display with the car running in 'development mode'. Within Feature Settings you can now enable Mad Max mode in the 'Blind Spot Threshold'. He also joked: "We considered going beyond Mad Max to “LA Freeway” level, but that’s too loco". It follows his retweeting of an old post from 2017 from a twitter user which photoshopped a Tesla Semi into a Mad Max type future. The current options you can see in Dev Mode are Standard, Aggressive and Mad Max. He also talked about how a self-driving car is programmed to yield in the event of a conflict: "It’s a tough call. Reality is that it will be pretty easy to bully a self-driving car, as it will always yield. Will prob have a manual override that requires continuous press for hardcore lane changes." Surely this will be part of Version 9 software coming this Autumn with self-driving features. So whereas currently you initiate a lane change with the blinker, it's your call to ensure the road is clear, this is a hint towards more autonomy. The other options you can see now are “Follow Nav,” “Blinker to Fork,” “Enable ULC,” and “Vision Stops." CAR MAGAZINE - MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV REVIEW: A STRONG CASE FOR HYBRIDS CAR Magazine UK: "we headed out to Provence, France, for a spin to see how the changes stack up. This engine revision plus work on the battery – which gets 10% more power output and total capacity of 13.8kWh thanks to new cells and better management - has allowed Mitsubishi to recalculate maximum electric range, fuel economy and CO2 emissions for new-age, more realistic WLTP testing, and the results are more impressive for that reason. We’re talking 30 miles on electric power, 141mpg and 46g/km. You’re also able to drive faster on electric power – now 84 rather than 78mph. ts PHEV tech is so effective, in fact, that it’s set to be rolled out to larger Renault and Nissan models in the coming years as that new alliance comes to fruition. In return, pure EV bits from the Leaf will go the other way and be used on smaller Mitsubishis." https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/mitsubishi/outlander-phev/ FIRST 350KW CHARGER OPENS IN GERMANY Fastned are a charging network here in Europe with 73 stations in and they just posted a Twitter video of their first station opening in Germany. That's the first of 18 in Germany this year but goal is in the hundreds. They say it's in the A3 at Limburg an der Lahn and if you have a car which can take advantage of slightly faster speeds like a Hyundai IONIQ or Jaguar I-PACE you'll be pleased to hear they're 350 kW DC chargers. The charging station is covered in solar panels too, and all of the energy they source is renewable. Bart Lubbers is the co-founder of Fastned and said: "In the next few years, German car manufacturers such as Porsche, Audi, Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes will introduce fully electric models that can charge at high power. This is a great challenge and opportunity for the automotive industry and charging companies like Fastned.” We heard recently Fastned also have plans for the UK and Belgium. ITALY AIMS TO PASS NORWAY AS EUROPE'S NO. 1 EV MARKET Bloomberg broke the news yesterday: "The populist government in Italy, Europe’s most sluggish market for electric cars, has a big-bang plan to put 1 million of the vehicles on the nation’s roads. Getting anywhere near that target could cost the state $10 billion in incentives." com: "Italy’s new populist government has a plan to put 1 million electric vehicles on the nation's roads by 2022 in an effort to go from being the region's weakest EV market to replacing Norway as its strongest. Italians last year bought just some 2,600 full-electric cars, out of a total of about 2 million vehicles sold, and the number rises only to around 4,800 if plug-in hybrid models are included, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. Fewer than 5,000 full-electric models are estimated to be on the country's roads today. And that's the problem, critics say. To go from being an EV backwater to Europe's biggest market, the Italian government would need to roll out incentives at least at the level of Norway's, which could cost several billion euros, analysts say. Even that might not be enough." JAGUAR LAND ROVER'S £13.5BN INVESTMENT Times Of India report: "Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover has lined up investment worth 13.5 billion pounds in the next three years on new models, technology development and capacity addition. The investments will be on new models, technology, capacity with significant amount of it on electrification and on a new platform" JLR said: "Our roll out to MLA will be fully complete by 2025, at which point every product can cater for an ICE (internal combustion engine), BEV (battery electric vehicle) or PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) derivative." NEW PEUGEOT 308 PHEV COMING IN GTI FORM French motoring site Caradisiac says the next gen Peugeot 308, which you'll be able to buy in 2020, will rely on electric power for GT and GTi status. The GT model most likely to couple up a gas engine with electric motor both driving 220 hp to the front wheels. Whilst the GTi will add an electric motor to the rear axle for AWD and 300hp.
