JB Straubel was Elon Musk's battery guy. Now he's trying to turn what some see as trash into power for the electric vehicle revolution. Straubel was there at the earliest days of Tesla, and in his 15 years with the electric vehicle company, he played an integral role: he developed the battery pack used in the first Tesla vehicle, was the company's Chief Technology Officer, and now sits on the board of directors. But his day job is running the battery-recycling startup Redwood Materials, and he envisions a future where recycled batteries power our cars, cell phones and power tools. So could companies like his one day replace the oil giants who fueled the last century? Why does he think humans have room to work harder? And can the Tesla board manage Musk as he takes on a growing role in U.S. politics, including advising the Trump administration? Demand for lithium-ion batteries is estimated to grow 500% in the next 10 years. With such an intense surge on the horizon, there is a need to ramp up the supply chain quickly and sustainably to support this growth. . Enter Redwood Materials. Founded by JB Straubel, co-founder and former CTO of Tesla, Redwood is transforming the EV battery supply chain by producing anode copper foil and cathode active materials in the US at scale for the first time—and using an increasing amount of recycled content to build those components. . Currently, EV battery materials move 50,000+ miles before they reach a battery cell factory. By offering large-scale sources of domestic anode and cathode materials produced from an increasing number of recycled batteries that directly go back to U.S. cell manufacturers, Redwood is creating a closed-loop, domestic supply chain for lithium-ion batteries. . We sat down with Alexis Georgeson, VP Government Relations & Communications, to discuss Redwood Materials circular supply chain and how the company is recycling, refining, and remanufacturing battery materials for a clean energy future. . We'd love to hear from you. Share your comments, questions and ideas for future topics and guests to podcast@sae.org. Saturday, 19 February 2022 from 10:00-16:00 UTC https://www.facebook.com/events/608101480274676/ GENERAL MOTORS EARNINGS Q4 2021 General Motors said it expects to generate an operating profit this year of between $13 billion and $15 billion as a semiconductor shortage that marred vehicle production and sales for most of last year shows signs of improving. Net income this year is expected to be between $9.4 billion and $10.8 billion, also in line with its $10 billion profit in 2021, GM said. Barra said the company is not reinstating its dividend, which the automaker cut during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic in April 2020. She said the company plans to use the saved capital for accelerating, even increasing, its $35 billion in investments in electric and autonomous vehicles through 2025. “We are pulling ahead significant investment into the 2022-to-2025 time frame, and we will share more details as we further refine our plan,” Barra told analysts during a call Tuesday. the company will announce a third plant to produce battery-electric trucks in the foreseeable future as well as the location of a fourth production facility for battery cells with LG https://www.cnbc.com/2022/02/01/general-motors-gm-earnings-q4-2021.html 2021 FULL-YEAR AND Q4 LETTER TO SHAREHOLDERS Since 2020, we have announced investments totaling more than $14 billion in 10 sites across North America to increase our manufacturing capacity in the region to more than 1 million EVs annually by the end of 2025. In late 2021, we opened Factory ZERO in Detroit and Hamtramck, our first plant dedicated to Ultium products, including the GMC HUMMER EV We are converting a plant in Orion Township, Michigan, to EV truck production to help provide us with a total of 600,000 units of EV truck capacity in North America by the end of 2025. Ultium Cells, our joint venture with LG Energy Solution, announced its third U.S. cell plant More than 110,000 Silverado EVs are reserved so far, including reservations from more than 240 fleet operators, and the numbers keep growing. FedEx Express, Merchants Fleet and Walmart, are adopting BrightDrop's electric vehicles and technology to make their delivery operations more efficient. All told, we have more than 25,000 production reservations for BrightDrop cargo vans. Customer interest in the LYRIQ is now so strong that we will forgo a new round of reservations and begin taking customer orders soon after the Debut Edition launches in March. Equinox EV is compellingly new, and it's affordable, with an estimated starting MSRP of $30,000. The efficiencies created by the Ultium Platform are a key reason why we can deliver truly affordable EVs like the Equinox. https://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/home.detail.html/content/Pages/news/emergency_news/2022/shareholders/q4-21-ceo-letter-to-shareholders.html FORD WILL SPEND UP TO $20 BILLION MORE IN SHIFT TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES Ford will spend as much as $20 billion to reorganize its business for the electric future, according to Bloomberg. The automaker is also mulling whether to spin off some of its EV business as a special acquisition company (SPAC) in order to attract more investment. Ford has previously stated that it would spend $30 billion on electric and autonomous vehicle development by 2025. Ford is reportedly putting former Apple and Tesla executive Doug Field in charge of the reorganization, which will include converting its factories from gas-powered to electric vehicle production and hiring more engineers. Ford recently announced that it was doubling production of its upcoming electric pickup truck, the F-150 Lightning, and tripling production for the Mustang Mach-E, with the expectation that it will reach over 200,000 units per year by 2023. Ford's electric delivery van, the E-Transit, also goes on sale early this year. The group tested chargers by Volkswagen's (VOWG_p.DE) Electrify America, ChargePoint (CHPT.N), EVgo (EVGO.O), Blink Charging (BLNK.O), EVconnect, Greenlots and Tesla's (TSLA.O) Superchargers across seven U.S. states in September. Electrify America reached the highest score in the ranking, followed by Tesla's Supercharger and ChargePoint, said umlaut, which was acquired by Accenture (ACN.N) in October. The ranking considered the technical performance of chargers, as well as the charging station environment, such as lighting, roofing and nearby amenities. It also took into account the performance of charging networks' apps The group used a Tesla Model 3 and a Ford (F.N) Mach-E for its 2021 tests Last year, EVs accounted for around 2% of all new car sales https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/us-ev-charging-network-is-more-robust-provider-differences-remain-2022-01-31/ MAGNA EDRIVES HIT THE MARKET ON VOLKSWAGEN MEB PLATFORM The HASCO Magna Electric Drive Systems Co., Ltd. Welcome to a new Patreon Producer JAMES FEJEDELEM APPLE CAR RUMORS INSPIRE KOREAN BATTERY MANUFACTURERS TO FORM TASK FORCE - a report published on Wednesday by 9 to 5 Mac, which claims that South Korean battery manufacturers have formed an Apple Car task force. The idea of a multicorporation task force being formed to court Apple's business is gutsy, but it may not be without its merits. - Apple has had visits with several battery suppliers in the last month, presumably with the goal of locking down a supplier for a pack of its own design. - Apple is rumored to be looking to South Korea for a number of its components, but it's not clear how many of those will be off-the-shelf, and how many will be custom. (Nasdaq: EVGO) family since mid-2021, today announced that its platform has reached over two million registered users globally. - comes on the heels of the platform surpassing over one million new app downloads over the course of 2021, - In 2021, PlugShare drivers provided over 1.3 million ratings of their charging experiences. Original Source : https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20220113005197/en/ BMW INVESTS IN HEYCHARGE, FOR ACCESS TO A WIDER RANGE OF EV CHARGERS - BMW recently announced another important investment in the field of green mobility. This time, the BMW i Ventures investment arm focused on the charging infrastructure, an area that was criticized by the BMW Group CEO, Oliver Zipse not long ago. The company invested in HeyCharge, a German start-up that aims to open access to private charging locations for its users. - Usually, in order to start using an EV charger, you'll need an app or an RFID card, as well as an internet connection. However, most subterranean garages lack an internet access point or the ability to install such devices at this time. - HeyCharge's patent-pending technology, removes the requirement for an on-site internet connection by allowing the app and chargers to interact directly over bluetooth with the HeyCharge App or SDK. This increases system availability while reducing delay between the phone and the charger. Total costs in buildings can be lowered by up to 80% when combined with HeyCharge's simple and effective hardware component, Access Point. The collaboration will enable more emission-free transportation and support EV adoption as EV charging infrastructure is enhanced within some of America's most popular national parks. - Under the collaboration between Rivian and Adopt a Charger, Rivian will pay for the equipment and fund 10 years of operation and maintenance by the two organizations. Adopt a Charger, which celebrated its tenth anniversary last year, has installed over 400 chargers in 10 states, including in 26 California state parks and at major cultural institutions such as the Getty Center.

Sam and Emma hosts Tim Higgins, Wall Street Journal reporter and CNBC contributor, to discuss his recent book Power Play: Tesla, Elon Musk, and the Bet of the Century, on how Elon Musk sells the future, and how much of that vision can actually be guaranteed. They jump off from JB Straubel's invention that helped Elon popularize high-end electric vehicles (EVs), reflecting on the 20th-century EV attempts by GM and Toyota, and why they fell apart, before touching on why Tesla's focus on the high-end price points was central to their success. Next, they dive into where Tesla's production has been lacking, particularly with Elon's self-driving cars and other fantastical promises, and Tim looks into the validity of Theranos comparisons. He, Sam, and Emma also touch on the biggest threats to Tesla in the EV market, at what age a startup truly matures into a real company, and what it means that such a long-shot investment has a massive financial backing in the industry, before Sam explores what shorting the stock would take, and the crew talks the dangers of letting a single man shape the future of an entire industry. Sam and Emma also touch on SCOTUS letting Roe v. Wade slip through the cracks in Texas with SB-8, setting the road for a massive fight for reproductive rights ahead, as well as the (hopefully) official end of fighting in Afghanistan, and the importance of the Courts moving forwards. And in the Fun Half: The MR Crew walks through Dave Rubin's legal expertise (mostly based on big-word usage), D from NYC calls in to defend Elon Musks' many classic talents, including engineering and following through on his own previous claims, and DJ Cold Case gets Sam into the social security zone on the recent fear-mongering on the well running dry. They also touch on the ever-increasing role the Supreme Court has begun to play in making drastically consequential political decisions. They round it out with some classic Fox out-foxing of other journalists as Jeanine Pirro employs the classic “ignore and walk away” tactic, and they discuss the incredibly racist scandal around a Texas school board, CRT, and a Black principal, plus, your calls and IMs!

Nico Rosberg Drives VW ID.R "Here’s my Hot Lap surprise for you: Racing the VW ID.R at the Nürburgring F1 track before the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix! I’m looking forward to your feedback on my Hot Lap video in this electric missile!" LG CHEM FORECASTS RECORD THIRD-QUARTER PROFIT "South Korea’s LG Chem Ltd, an electric vehicle (EV) battery supplier for Tesla and a petrochemicals maker, said on Monday its third-quarter operating profit likely jumped to a record high, beating analysts’ estimates." says Reutrers: "Analysts attributed it to orders from Tesla. LG Chem, along with China’s CATL, supplies batteries for Tesla’s electric cars made in Shanghai. Tesla posted record quarterly deliveries in the third quarter. Analysts expect LG Chem’s battery business to remain profitable in the third quarter and its mainstay petrochemicals business to post solid profits. Tesla’s long-term plan to produce its own cells have hurt LG Chem shares, which had rallied this year due to EV expectations." TESLA UPDATE LETS YOU LOCK SENTRY MODE/TESLACAM STORAGE IN GLOVEBOX "Tesla is updating the interior of the Model 3 to let owners lock their Sentry Mode/TeslaCam storage device in the glovebox. Tesla owners have to plug a storage device in one of the USB ports in the center console and footage recorded by Sentry Mode and TeslaCam, the automaker’s dashcam feature, will be stored on it." says electrek: "Now we learn that Tesla is introducing a solution with the new Model 3 2021 refresh that we have been reporting on over the last few days. Tesla has updated the glovebox to now get a USB port on the top left corner of it, according to a picture of the updated design seen by Electrek. The new port is going to connect to Tesla’s MCU and enable Tesla owners to use with a storage device, like a portable SSD, in order to record Sentry Mode and TeslaCam events." PAN-AMERICAN ELECTRIC-VEHICLE ROAD TRIP NOW POSSIBLE "hanks to Enel X, electric vehicle drivers now have a way to drive from North America all the way down to Ushuaia in southern Argentina. Enel X recently installed 220 of its JuiceBox charging points in 11 South and Central American countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico (including down to Ensenada, on the Baja California peninsula), Nicaragua, Panama, and Peru." reports Car and Driver: "The new "100% Electric Pan-American Charging Corridor" takes EV drivers along the Andes mountains, allowing them to follow along the 13,000-mile route that actor Ewan McGregor and his friend Charley Boorman took using electric motorcycles in the new Apple TV+ series Long Way Up. The two men drove electric Harley-Davidson bikes from Ushuaia to Los Angeles, and Ener X's Pan-American Charging Corridor is featured in the documentary program. While LiveWire electric motorcycles, the first Harley‑Davidson electric motorcycles, are the EV stars of the show, the film crew rode along in electric Rivian pick-up trucks, making the entire operation a tough test bed for new electric vehicles." FRANCE: PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CAR SALES DOUBLED "In September, more than one in 10 new passenger car in France was a plug-in. Despite the overall passenger car sales in France decreasing a few percent in September, the plug-in electric car segment grew significantly to one of its highest results ever. The total number of registrations more than doubled to 18,588 (up 207% year-over-year). Passenger cars noted a market share of about 10.6%." according to InsideEVs: "The model rank is getting more interesting this Fall, although the dominance of Renault ZOE (2,878 in September and some 26,000 YTD) remains not threatened. The next two best were Peugeot e-208 (1,230) and Tesla Model 3 (1,083), but in fourth we saw the all-new Volkswagen ID.3 with 616 registrations." DAIMLER'S LABOR CHIEF URGES EUROPEAN LAWMAKERS TO PROMOTE EV CHARGING "European lawmakers should promote electric car charging infrastructure as aggressively as they seek to lower CO2 emissions, Daimler's labor boss, Michael Brecht, said." reportsd Automotive News Europe; "Overall demand for cars could suffer if ownership of electric vehicles was not made more attractive with more readily available charging networks, Brecht said. Brecht said Daimler has reviewed its strategy to free up resources to retool its factories and retrain workers to build low emission cars." CHINA PASSES PLAN TO BOOST NEW ENERGY VEHICLE INDUSTRY "China on Friday passed a development plan for the country's new energy vehicle (NEV) industry to foster new growth areas of green development, according to a statement issued after a State Council executive meeting" says CGTN: "Starting from 2021, at least 80 percent of public transportation, taxi and logistics vehicles in the national ecological civilization pilot zones in Fujian, Jiangxi, Guizhou and Hainan should be new energy vehicles." XPENG SCORES RECORD DELIVERIES IN SEPTEMBER, 3RD QUARTER "Xpeng’s September deliveries amounted to 3,478 units, which is a new record for the company, and 8,578 was the quarterly total. The company’s new(ish), affordable sedan (the P7) dominated the company’s sales in September, totaling 2,573. The slightly older (but still quite young) small crossover/SUV, the G3, landed 905 sales." writes Zach at Cleantechnica: "Production of 40,000–50,000 electric cars a year is still a pretty niche amount, about what Tesla was doing with just the Model S and Model X. However, Xpeng is quickly working to go beyond this capacity. " BYD NEW-ENERGY VEHICLE SALES UP 45% IN SEPTEMBER "China's leading new-energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturer BYD reported a strong rebound in its NEV sales in September, company data showed. In a filing to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, the Shenzhen-based company said it sold 19,881 NEVs last month, up 45.3 percent year-on-year and up 30.1 percent month-on-month." according to China Daily: "In the January-September period, BYD sold 110,941 NEVs, down 42.4 percent year-on-year. The slump, however, narrowed from 49.1 percent in the January-August period with the help of the rebound in September." https://global.chinadaily.com.cn/a/202010/10/WS5f8145b0a31024ad0ba7ddb0.html ELECTRIC CAR SALES TRIPLE IN RACE TO MEET EUROPE CO2 RULES "One in 10 new cars sold across Europe this year will be electric or plug-in hybrid, triple last year’s sales levels after automakers launched new models to meet emissions rules, according to group projections Green Transport and Environment policy. The market share for most electric cars will rise to 15 percent next year, the group predicts" says The Financial Times: "According to the rules, automakers must reduce the average emissions of their vehicles to 95g of CO2 per km or face fines that can reach billions of euros. In the first six months of the year, average emissions fell from 122g to 111g, the biggest drop in six months in more than a decade. Toyota, which partners with Mazda, is very close to meeting its goals due to the widespread use of traditional hybrids, which run on both the engine and the battery. BMW, which has plug-in hybrids as well as its all-electric i3 model, met its targets for this year, as did Renault, which sells the Zoe electric. Renault’s alliance partner, Nissan, which sells the Leaf electric car, is also close to its goals." https://www.ft.com/content/f3f7d99a-34a4-4650-a529-3731bd8bc17c WHY AMAZON AND PANASONIC ARE BETTING ON THIS BATTERY RECYCLING STARTUP "[JB Straubel's] understated delivery obfuscates his ambitions and plans for Redwood Materials, the recycling startup that he co-founded in 2017. Straubel envisions and is actively working to make Redwood one of the world’s major battery recycling companies, with numerous facilities strategically scattered throughout the globe." says TechCrunch: "The company has a business-to-business strategy, recycling the scrap from battery cell production as well as consumer electronics like cell phone batteries, laptop computers, power tools, power banks, scooters and electric bicycles. Redwood collects the scrap from consumer electronics companies and battery cell manufacturers like Panasonic. It then processes these discarded goods, extracting materials like cobalt, nickel and lithium that are typically mined, and then supplies those back to Panasonic and other customers." JB Straubel said: “As the world electrifies transportation it needs so many different materials and the supply chain upstream of the factory is, I think, often under appreciated. The Gigafactory is a little bit like an iceberg — there’s so much of it that’s kind of below the surface, in the suppliers and in the mines and refineries and all the different things that need to feed into it that you don’t typically see.”" INSIDE CHILE'S STRUGGLE TO MAKE LITHIUM MINING 'GREENER' "Mining companies have descended on Chile to meet the demands of everything from phones to cars, but the environmental damage of water-heavy extraction processes has become a serious issue. Salt flat extraction is comparatively non-destructive to the landscape on a surface level but requires huge quantities of water to be pumped in from elsewhere or up from groundwater supplies, which is then evaporated in a series of pools to extract the lithium, removing it from the local ecosystem. " reportd The Drive: "The tension between needing lithium to mitigate climate change and actually causing it by desertifying a region would be ironic if it wasn’t so typically horrible."

Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Monday 25th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. TESLA EMPLOYEE TWEETS ABOUT PRODUCTION RATES Elon Musk tweets about Tesla's production rates, the challenges, the successes. Dave from accounts does NOT. Linda from HR does NOT. John from the Gigafactory does NOT. Except, John Totah did exactly that yesterday. John Totah is the Lead Material Flow for Model 3 at Gigafactory 1 and a Twitter account using his name, so we're assuming it is really him, make some bold claims before they were swiftly deleted. John said: "Our original goal was 2,500/wk and we didn't hit it. Now we just hit 5,000/wk throughput in June. Insanely hard work by @Tesla team." If you didn't know that’s exactly the kind of language and tweet we would get from Elon. You know, the CEO. One of a handful of people on the planet who can comment publicly on Tesla. And not just because they're being precious but because the Q2 production and deliveries, whether batteries or completed cars, is potentially the most important announcement in the history of the company. This is the last week of the quarter. On the bright side that's a doubling in two months so understandably he's proud. He even had time to send a follow up, before he found the delete button: "We want to sustain over 5k/wk since current capacity of the lines are built for a max 6k/wk. It was incredibly difficult to hit 2500 in March. We revised many processes and built new systems that worked better. Incredible work and brain power." As you may have heard before on the podcast, when I was talking about the production lines heading from Tesla Grohmann Engineering in Germany to Nevada, to fix one of the four zones, that was when Elon replied directly to me to confirm it. Super exciting, so we knew they had a shutdown to speed up Gigafactory. And once JB Straubel was tasked with sorting out Zone 4 at Giga, and it would amazing new if true before batteries were a bottleneck at one point. He wasn't clear on his tweet whether the throughput was specifically about his area of responsibility, or overall Model 3 production rates at Giga. And remember none of this means Freemont is on target for 5,000 Model 3's week. The twitter account has now been protected. The news was reported on Reddit, Electrek etc, so I feel it can be reported on. ANOTHER TESLA INTERIOR UPDATE InternetDude: "So I finally got my 2018 Tesla Model S P100D. I ordered it with cream interior but it was supposed to have figured ash dark wood. Tesla made a production change just about 10 days after I ordered and changed almost all of the aluminium accents to dark graphite colour instead. They also changed to the wood to a natural oak decor finish, more like the Model 3." MAD MAX MODE FOR AUTOPILOT LANE CHANGE Elon has tweeted a picture of the centre display with the car running in 'development mode'. Within Feature Settings you can now enable Mad Max mode in the 'Blind Spot Threshold'. He also joked: "We considered going beyond Mad Max to “LA Freeway” level, but that’s too loco". It follows his retweeting of an old post from 2017 from a twitter user which photoshopped a Tesla Semi into a Mad Max type future. The current options you can see in Dev Mode are Standard, Aggressive and Mad Max. He also talked about how a self-driving car is programmed to yield in the event of a conflict: "It’s a tough call. Reality is that it will be pretty easy to bully a self-driving car, as it will always yield. Will prob have a manual override that requires continuous press for hardcore lane changes." Surely this will be part of Version 9 software coming this Autumn with self-driving features. So whereas currently you initiate a lane change with the blinker, it's your call to ensure the road is clear, this is a hint towards more autonomy. The other options you can see now are “Follow Nav,” “Blinker to Fork,” “Enable ULC,” and “Vision Stops." CAR MAGAZINE - MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV REVIEW: A STRONG CASE FOR HYBRIDS CAR Magazine UK: "we headed out to Provence, France, for a spin to see how the changes stack up. This engine revision plus work on the battery – which gets 10% more power output and total capacity of 13.8kWh thanks to new cells and better management - has allowed Mitsubishi to recalculate maximum electric range, fuel economy and CO2 emissions for new-age, more realistic WLTP testing, and the results are more impressive for that reason. We’re talking 30 miles on electric power, 141mpg and 46g/km. You’re also able to drive faster on electric power – now 84 rather than 78mph. ts PHEV tech is so effective, in fact, that it’s set to be rolled out to larger Renault and Nissan models in the coming years as that new alliance comes to fruition. In return, pure EV bits from the Leaf will go the other way and be used on smaller Mitsubishis." https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/mitsubishi/outlander-phev/ FIRST 350KW CHARGER OPENS IN GERMANY Fastned are a charging network here in Europe with 73 stations in and they just posted a Twitter video of their first station opening in Germany. That's the first of 18 in Germany this year but goal is in the hundreds. They say it's in the A3 at Limburg an der Lahn and if you have a car which can take advantage of slightly faster speeds like a Hyundai IONIQ or Jaguar I-PACE you'll be pleased to hear they're 350 kW DC chargers. The charging station is covered in solar panels too, and all of the energy they source is renewable. Bart Lubbers is the co-founder of Fastned and said: "In the next few years, German car manufacturers such as Porsche, Audi, Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes will introduce fully electric models that can charge at high power. This is a great challenge and opportunity for the automotive industry and charging companies like Fastned.” We heard recently Fastned also have plans for the UK and Belgium. ITALY AIMS TO PASS NORWAY AS EUROPE'S NO. 1 EV MARKET Bloomberg broke the news yesterday: "The populist government in Italy, Europe’s most sluggish market for electric cars, has a big-bang plan to put 1 million of the vehicles on the nation’s roads. Getting anywhere near that target could cost the state $10 billion in incentives." com: "Italy’s new populist government has a plan to put 1 million electric vehicles on the nation's roads by 2022 in an effort to go from being the region's weakest EV market to replacing Norway as its strongest. Italians last year bought just some 2,600 full-electric cars, out of a total of about 2 million vehicles sold, and the number rises only to around 4,800 if plug-in hybrid models are included, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. Fewer than 5,000 full-electric models are estimated to be on the country's roads today. And that's the problem, critics say. To go from being an EV backwater to Europe's biggest market, the Italian government would need to roll out incentives at least at the level of Norway's, which could cost several billion euros, analysts say. Even that might not be enough." JAGUAR LAND ROVER'S £13.5BN INVESTMENT Times Of India report: "Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover has lined up investment worth 13.5 billion pounds in the next three years on new models, technology development and capacity addition. The investments will be on new models, technology, capacity with significant amount of it on electrification and on a new platform" JLR said: "Our roll out to MLA will be fully complete by 2025, at which point every product can cater for an ICE (internal combustion engine), BEV (battery electric vehicle) or PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) derivative." NEW PEUGEOT 308 PHEV COMING IN GTI FORM French motoring site Caradisiac says the next gen Peugeot 308, which you'll be able to buy in 2020, will rely on electric power for GT and GTi status. The GT model most likely to couple up a gas engine with electric motor both driving 220 hp to the front wheels. Whilst the GTi will add an electric motor to the rear axle for AWD and 300hp. Hello and welcome to the Sunday 17th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. NEW MODEL 3 ASSEMBLEY LINE JUST PRODUCED IT'S FIRST CAR It was only a month ago we heard the details of the dual motor, and much more expensive Performance versions, of the Model 3. Or as they seem to be called these days the 3D and P3D! And yesterday Elon Musk revealed the very first Model 3 just rolled off the new assembly line at the Fremont factory. And when I say factory, it's more like a semi-permanent tent. He tweeted a pic of a Performance model, and we know that because we can see the red brake callipers, and whilst it's not totally clear you can make out the white interior. Both are only appearing for now on the P3D. Range: 310 miles 0 to 60 mph acceleration: 3.5 seconds Top speed: 155 mph Price: $78,000 (without autopilot) https://electrek.co/2018/06/16/tesla-model-3-dual-motor-performance-new-assembly-line/ ELON MUSK WILL BE ‘ALMOST 24/7’ AT FACTORY TO HELP FIX A FEW BOTTLENECKS "An e-mail sent to all Tesla staff from Elon Musk on Friday night congratulated employees for the progress they've made on Model 3 vehicle production recently — but also said "radical improvements" are still needed in manufacturing to hit the company's quarterly targets." according to CNBC: "It also references a man named Omead, presumably Omead Afshar, a project manager in the office of the CEO at Tesla" It's getting very exciting! All parts of the Model 3 production system are now above 500 and some are almost at 700 cars already. Congratulations to all on making so much progress! That said, radical improvements are still needed in paint shop output, GA3, bringing up the new GA4, End of Line and Module Zone 4 at Giga. We also need to achieve sustained, 700+ per week on the body line. Wherever you are in the company, if you feel you can help out in any of those areas, please check in with Jat Dhillon on GA3, Jerome Guillen on GA4 and Omead on EoL and JB Straubel or Christ Lister on Module Zone 4. I will be at our Fremont factory almost 24/7 for the next several days checking in with those groups to make sure they have as many resources as they can handle. Thanks, Elon https://electrek.co/2018/06/16/tesla-model-3-production-update-elon-musk-factory/ https://www.cnbc.com/2018/06/16/elon-musk-e-mail-to-tesla-employees-says-radical-improvements-needed.html CHADEMO 2.0 ALLOWS FOR CHARGING UP TO 400 KW A while ago on the podcast I was talking with you about the new specs for CHAdeMO and now it looks like those draft specifications have been ratified for CHAdeMO 2.0. Electrive reports: "The system allows for charging capacities up to 400 kW, and allows for charging up to 1,000 volts with liquid-cooled cables without changing plugs or via current collectors. CHAdeMO 2.0 also opens the door to fast charging for larger electric vehicles, such as trucks and buses. The main benefit compared to the CCS system remains: The Japanese DC charging system will remain V2G capable. Furthermore, the new CHAdeMO technology is compatible with Plug-and-Charge functionalities, allowing for automated authentication and payment." https://www.electrive.com/2018/06/16/chademo-2-0-allows-for-charging-up-to-400-kw/ PRINCE CHARLES WANTS LUXURY ELECTRIC CAR FOR ROYAL FLEET "The Prince of Wales is preparing to add an electric car to the royal fleet after making friends with the brother of Elon Musk, founder of Tesla." according to the Mail in the UK: "While hosting the multinational's board member Kimbal Musk and his fiancée at Dumfries House in Scotland, Charles test drove a £73,350 black Tesla Model S. And he now wants to make the Royal Family's car collection more eco-friendly by including an electric vehicle. Clarence House told The Daily Telegraph: 'There is definitely a plan for us to incorporate electric cars into the royal fleet." NEW HIGH-TECH 2020 NISSAN QASHQAI SET TO GO HYBRID "The next-generation Nissan Qashqai, due in showrooms in 2020, will feature two new hybrid systems plus a sleek design makeover, Auto Express can exclusively reveal. However, there won’t be a pure-electric version, while Nissan is also considering ditching diesel from what is currently the UK’s third best-selling car." co.uk reports: "Full electric power will be reserved for a separate SUV model based on an all-new platform. It’s likely to underpin a whole family of electric cars spanning B, C and D segments (everything from Juke to X-Trail) for Nissan and its Alliance partners Renault and Mitsubishi." http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/nissan/qashqai/103735/new-high-tech-2020-nissan-qashqai-set-to-go-hybrid NISSAN JOINS FORCES WITH E.ON FOR V2G AND RENEWABLE ENERGY Mark Kane at InsideEVs has picked up on a story: "Nissan announced a new partnership concerning electric vehicle-to-grid services and renewable energy projects with energy supplier E.ON" Nissan look like they want to be an energy company and not just an auto maker, with business units around renewable energy generation, energy storage systems, vehicle-to-grid systems, grid integration for Nissan EV customers Nissan say "Nissan uses its Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology to achieve this. It’s a key element of Intelligent Integration – one of the three central pillars of the Nissan Intelligent Mobility vision. The partnership with E.ON will utilise a V2G infrastructure and Nissan’s advanced bi-directional charging technology. It will allow customers to draw energy from the electricity grid to power their electric vehicle. They can also ‘sell’ that energy back to the grid for others to use. This could represent no fuel costs for the customer – just free power for their EV." https://insideevs.com/nissan-joins-forces-with-e-on-for-v2g-and-renewable-energy/ SOFTWARE FIX FOR 2016-17 NISSAN LEAFS MAY IMPROVE BATTERY RANGE Green Car Reports has an update on 30kWh Nissan LEAF battery issue: "In March we told you about a study of a small group of 2016 and 2017 Nissan Leaf models equipped with the larger, 30kWh battery pack that had abnormal battery degradation. That study concluded that nearly four out of five of the larger battery packs examined lost cell capacity three times faster than earlier 24kWh battery packs that were studied. This week, Nissan said it would issue a software update for the battery controllers to help stem the power loss. The software fix was reported by Clean Fleet Report. According to the report, the software fix addresses a known issue about the controller miscalculating the available range and charge from the battery. Initially, some suspected that the Leaf's air cooling for its batteries—rather than liquid cooling—was to blame for reduced capacity and higher degradation. The study in March didn't observe the redesigned 2018 Nissan Leaf's battery pack, which was upgraded further to 40 kWh." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1117247_software-fix-for-2016-17-nissan-leafs-may-improve-battery-range COMMUNITY Let’s get onto the topic of chargers being in use when YOU need to use them. It’s Thursday 7th June 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK. Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to. The background to the shareholder meeting was a $785million loss in the first quarter of this year alone. Model 3 production is good, and behind expectations. Mission: "To accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. Thank you to everyone who I follow who attended and posted pictures, from a few thousand miles away I felt very close. Thank you Dennis Pascual who had great pics of the white Roadster on show, albeit without an interior so not a working model. A reminder to those with a spare $250,000 kicking around, you can put you deposit down now. The deposit being the full amount! 1.ELON GETS EMOTIONAL Elon started off emotional, almost walking on stage with tears in his eyes and steadying his voice. It was quite personal anything with some shareholders wanting him removed as Chairman, which was never a realistic proposal. Shareholders gave Elon and the board a full vote of confidence. It was visceral how much he cares, and how deeply invested he is on a personal level. Invested in the financial success, the quality of cars and above all, the safety of his workforce. "At Tesla, we build our cars with love. At a lot of other companies, they're built by marketing or the finance department, and there's no soul. We're not perfect, but we pour our heart and soul into it and we really care." WORKER INJURY RATE REDUCED Safer Employees was the title of this slide. Zach from Clean Technica says: "Tesla’s factory worker injury rate is now approximately 6% below the auto industry average and 50% what it was when GM and Toyota were last building cars in the NUMMI factory. Last year, Tesla’s factory worker injury rate was a bit above the auto industry average. Tesla’s long-term goal is to get it to 50% of the industry average, or 25% of what it was when GM and Toyota were running the factory." TESLA ARE IMPROVING QUALITY Tesla Model 3 repairs reduced rapidly from Sep 17 to January 18, and have stabilised now at a much lower level. BATTERY PACK AND CELL COST REDUCTIONS In the Q&A section, I thought some of the most interesting comments came when Elon and JB were chatting about battery cell prices. Below $100/kWh is the holy grail for cost parity with combustion engines and some analysts put that at 2020, others I’ve seen only last week said if couldn't be done before 2023. BNEF, hugely respected and knowing a lot more than I do, say 2025. Elon said...by the end of this year at cell level. That took my breath away to be honest. He said it depends on commodity prices, and it's cell level not pack level, but $100 by the end of the year? Even if you account for ElonTime and add 6 months (make it 12!) and it would be huge news. Pack level $100/kWh within two years, and even Elon joked that wasn't ElonTime, that was realistic time. He specifically talked about improvements to the chemistry, vertical integration at Giga, and production of anodes and cathodes. If i was an analyst today or at BNEF I’d be going back the calculator sharpish and revising my estimates so not to seem out of touch. As the battery pack is always the most expensive part of an EV, which reduces Tesla's costs and increases their margins. MODEL 3 IS TOP SELLING PREMIUM SEDAN It's hard with Tesla to focus on the stories that matter, such can be the chaos of media attention around them. Partly brought on by their own success, the half a million Model 3 reservations, and the bold claims they make about their ability to produce them. But they ARE making a lot of cars, and rates are improving. So much so that Model 3 is now the best-selling mid-sized premium sedan in the U.S. on a monthly basis, now outselling Daimler's popular Mercedes-Benz C-Class, according to Tesla. More than the Audi A4, more than the BMW 3Series, more than the Lexus IS. GIGAFACTORY OVERDRIVE Tesla expects to produce more than half of the world’s EV batteries in Q3 2018, including Chinese production. Without any sort of fact check, that was the stat which struck me as intriguing. There are a LOT of Chinese cars, trucks and buses being produced with rates on the rise, from the likes of BYD, BAIC etc. Oh and don't try to take a quick trip around the Gigafactory, Elon says it takes 2 hours if you don't stop, to see it all. And he & JB said it was only one third built. When finished it will easily be the biggest building on planet earth. That won't be complete for another 4 or 5 years. 1GWh OF ENERGY STORAGE As I talked about on yesterday’s podcast, if you missed it you might want to download that one we discussed more in detail the JB Straubel quotes, but Tesla didn't miss the chance to reiterate the news Tesla’s energy storage production has now reached 1 GWh worldwide. And they want to deploy the next 1GWh within a year, more of that phrase 'exponential growth' from EM. And talking energy, Elon dropped in how he happened to have bought a house opposite where he lives - not sure whether that's to live in or whether that's what you do as a billionaire - but that he had the Solar Roof put on it, and he's so happy with how it looks and works. It doesn't get the headlines but you could see how much Elon wants the Solar Roof to be the default choice of roof covering in the future, and he talked about it wanting to last 50 years. MODEL Y This was never meant to be the forum for major announcements about any of those things but inevitably we heard snippets of info. There was a new silhouette image of the Model Y, just the front, but the fanboys and fangirls loved it. He reiterated Twitter claims of a model Y reveal date of March 2019, with production commencing in H1 2020. ROADSTER The surprise of the Roadster unveil at the Semi event took the air out of the room at the time, but it gets better. There was laughter when Elon called the car he revealed last year the "base Roadster" and said “it’s gonna have a SpaceX options package.” So that's an improvement on 0-60mph in 1.9 seconds, Top Speed of 250mph and 620 mile range. I also thought it was interesting, and this doesn't get reported because Elon often says a 'thing' which gets all the headlines, but the sentence he says next can be more powerful. He said combustion technology has a halo effect on all ICE cars because it still owns the records, but he wants the Roadster to be the best, full stop. The fastest accelerating, the quickest, the best on the track, and the longest range between adding fuel. He said once an electric car bests combustion for everything then it's game on. Or rather, game over for gas. SEMI RE-DESIGN Elon did say the semi would get a redesign, where in Europe we have to use the cab-over-engine design to meet regulations on total length of truck. He also said the range would be beyond what anyone thinks is possible. He confirmed the finalised, single design would work in North America, Europe, China, and the rest of the world. MODEL 3 TEST DRIVES If you're lucking enough to live in an area with a Model 3 on display, you're already doing better than most, and certainly better than here in Europe. But Elon announced he wanted a Model 3 at every Tesla store, and next some cars for test drives. That's in the next two months. What model do you think they would put out for test drives? A basic 35k model, a fully spec'd model, a dual motor (let's call it the 3D) or the full beans performance P3D model? Either way I don't think just anyone will get a test drive, either existing S and X owners, or even just Model 3 reservation holders, to dissuade them from cancelling. COMPACT TESLA I love how an innocent question can be huge news. Will there be a compact-sized Tesla? One to take on the VW ID range, the Golf buying market? Oh yes says Elon, within 5 years. So watch out Golf, or Ford Focus, or Vauxhall Astra, or Audi A3. ELON WANTS TO GET BETTER AT 'TIME' “I do think I have an issue with time. This is something I’m trying to get better at. I’m a naturally optimistic person. I’m trying to recalibrate these estimates as much as possible.” AUTOPILOT He said he has been up until 1am last night testing Autopilot. Isn't that a fascinating insight? Autopilot features were said to “exponentially” improve over the next six-twelve months. He even confirmed that Tesla plans to bring back free Autopilot trials. TESLA BODYSHOP Domenick at InsideEV's described it best when he pointed out: "Tesla service centres will double over the next year, Musk mentioned that they will be adding Tesla body shop repair locations. These would be attached, mostly, to existing service centres, with the top 10 metro areas in the US getting one by the end of the month. Saying that this would create a huge improvement in both time and cost of body repair claiming, incredibly, that they would be able to achieve same-day repair in a lot of cases." 35K MODEL 3 DELIVERED FIRST QUARTER OF 2019 We will honor that obligation” to deliver at that price, he said, “and we would do so now if it was physically possible.” MODEL 3 AND THIRD ASSEMBLEY LINE He said the third general assembly line in its Fremont, California, plant will come online soon, ensuring production will hit 5,000 cars per week by the end of June. "All Model 3 production lines have demonstrated capability of producing 500 cars per day". If you remember 5,000/week was the target for end of 2017 but it's now looking like it might actually happen by the end of Q2, the end of June is 23 days time. Line 3 was confirmed to be more efficient than Lines 1 and 2. SUPERCHARGER EXPANSION 9,969 Superchargers Globally Today, a whisker away from 10,000. The Supercharger V3 will be ready by the end of the year, and when ready, the expansion rate will be increased to get more of the V3's out there. Elon said the plan is to put them at all the right places so you can drive around the world only on Superchargers. Long term they're working on charging ratios, which was a new term to me, with a charging time ratio on long trips of 6:1, later 8 or 10:1 (currently around 4.5:1). On the earnings call, but not in my notes from yesterday, was the charge rate of 200-250kW. CASH FLOW POSITIVE I was watching the live stream, which was super late here, on Ben Sullins YouTube channel, he was live streaming it but also had himself picture-in-picture in the corner of the screen offering some commentary. And when this came up, i think he punched the air. Or at least clapped. Cash. Flow. Positive. Something Tesla has claimed in the past would happen but never did, however Elon carefully chose his words to say they'd be cash flow positive and GAAP net income positive in Q3 & Q4 of 2018. He was careful to say "expecting" which backed off the word "definitely" he's used previously. Elon also said he doesn't expect to raise any capital during the year through debt or equity. CHINESE PRESENCE I got the feeling they weren't meant to talk about China, but it happened! They confirmed Shanghai as the rumours suggested for Giga there, and all operations under one roof. From raw materials in, to complete cars out. It follows the very recent news that China is now allowing EV makers to build facilities there without needed a joint venture with a domestic company. Tesla's revenue in China has risen from $319 million annually in 2016 to over $2 billion in 2017, with a presence there they will soon avoid import tariffs. Oh and not to forget Europe, they're deciding the location. And in total, they see a need for 12 worldwide Gigafactgories. I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to. TESLA SHAREHOLDER MEETING Nuggets of information about the Model 3 production ramp and a potential capital raise for the Silicon Valley car maker. Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif., will start at 5:30 p.m. Eastern and it will be webcast. Elon Musk usually peppers his introduction with updates on company deadlines and goals TESLA DENIES REPORT CLAIMING THAT 23 PERCENT OF MODEL 3 DEPOSITS WERE REFUNDED You may have heard or read reports that 23% of Model 3 deposits were being refunded, and whilst i was tempted to report it, I have been looking into the company which made the claims, any validity and just checking this wasn’t more of an attempt for them to get their name out for a product or service, and using the power of Tesla to generate headlines. There's no doubt more people have now heard of Second Measure since they issued their claim, which is based on credit card transaction data. Well before I could finish digging into them, Tesla denied Second Measure's figures, with a spokesperson stating, "this does not line up with our data." According to The Drive: "The spokesperson pointed to Tesla's own first quarter shareholder letter for semi-current reservation figures, which were then in excess of 450,000. In its production press release for the same period, Tesla stated that its net reservations "remained stable," attributing any customer refunds to "delays in production in general and delays in availability of certain planned options, particularly dual motor AWD and the smaller battery pack." TESLA HAS INSTALLED A TRULY HUGE AMOUNT OF ENERGY STORAGE Another milestone reached in Solar according to Tesla: "Since 2015, it has installed a worldwide total of a gigawatt-hour of energy storage–technology that is critical for using renewable energy at scale. For comparison, that’s nearly half of the entire amount of energy storage installed globally last year. As the company’s electric car business quickly grows, the energy side of its business is growing even faster" says Fast Company in what they call an exclusive report: "The cost of battery storage keeps falling; between 2010 and 2016, the price across the industry fell 73%, from $1,000 a kilowatt-hour to $273 a kilowatt-hour. By 2020, it may drop to $145 a kilowatt-hour, and by 2025, to $69.5 a kilowatt-hour." CTO JB Straubel said: "It’s at a scale now where it’s undeniably making an impact. We see it as absolutely core to our mission as a company of accelerating sustainability. Electric vehicles, where we started, are one key piece of that puzzle. They’re an enabler for using sustainable energy and transportation, but they need to be linked to an energy generation source . . . We really want to solve this all the way, with a big-picture mind-set of truly solving the problem, not just providing someone a piece of the [solution] and then they have to go and figure out how to charge their car sustainably. The economy of scale that we can derive, and have derived, from building the Model S and the Model X, or now the Model 3 at scale, is what has allowed us to bring down the cost of energy storage for all these different applications." SALES OF HYBRID CARS SOAR AS DIESELS PLUNGE BY NEARLY A QUARTER Adam Vaughan, writing in yesterday's Guardian newspaper here in the UK, says "Sales of plug-in hybrid cars soared by nearly three-quarters year on year in May, dramatically outstripping the 3.4% overall growth in new car registrations." Adam's article continues: "Nearly 4,000 plug-in hybrids, which typically run for about 50 miles on a battery before a combustion engine kicks in, were bought last month, up from 2,301 in May 2017. Registrations of purely battery-powered cars, such as the Nissan Leaf, were up by nearly a fifth, to 1,099. The numbers are still a small fraction of the total 192,649 cars bought in the month but all electrified vehicles combined, including hybrids such as the Toyota Prius, took a record market share of 5.8%." EUROPE UP AGAINST ASIAN JUGGERNAUT IN ELECTRIC CAR BATTERY DRIVE "Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD is looking at launching battery production in Europe, joining Asian rivals aiming to cash in on a green car revolution and threatening attempts by Brussels to nurture a home-grown industry." according to a Reuters report: only Sweden's Northvolt and Germany's TerraE www.terrae.com have plans for large lithium-ion battery factories in Europe so far and some leading European carmakers have already struck deals with Asian suppliers setting up in Hungary and Poland. South Korea’s LG Chem, Samsung SDI both have European factories due to open soon while China’s GSR Capital already produces battery cells at a UK plant it bought from Nissan." However auto makers have had to get on with signing battery or cell supply contracts before they could invest in their electric plans: "German’s BMW said it was not involved in the European alliance while Europe’s biggest automaker, Volkswagen , said it plans to get batteries from LG Chem’s Polish factory due to open this year. Mercedes maker Daimler has awarded a contract to CATL." DAIMLER SAYS ELECTRIC CARS ON TARGET AFTER REPORT OF LAUNCH DELAYS Yesterday Daimler had to issue a rejection of stories circulating that they were struggling with delivering on planned launches for their electric EQ sub brands. Germany’s Handelsblatt said that they were facing delays because of battery shortages and other technical problems. They claimed the delays would mean the EQC isn't even in showrooms until June 2019, however Daimler said they had never specified a launch date for the EQC. Daimler said: "We are on target, there are no delays" BUILDERS WILL BE FORCED TO PUT IN ELECTRIC CAR CHARGERS In Ireland, "New petrol stations, supermarkets and car parks could be forced to install charging points for electric vehicles under proposals being considered by the government." according to the Times. Denis Naughten, the climate and environment minister: "Charging at home at night is the most cost-efficient and eco-friendly way of charging an electric vehicle. Given the high proportion of homes with driveways and dedicated parking spaces, Ireland has greater capacity for home charging than other countries.” GM CHINA TO LAUNCH 10 NEV MODELS BY 2020 General Motors plans to launch 10 heavily electrified vehicle models in China by 2020, and another 10 in the three years between 2021 and 2023 according to GM’s China chief Matt Tsien who was speaking yesterday, June 5th. In China, New energy vehicles is the catch-all term used for pure BEV vehicles, PHEV's and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. KESKO TO DOUBLE NUMBER OF ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING POINTS IN FINLAND Heading to Finland next and earlier this week, on Monday, Kesko announced it will build a nationwide network of charging points for electric vehicles in 2018–2019. According to the Helsinki Times: "The retail conglomerate also revealed it will launch a series of projects to develop new mobility services, starting with a car-sharing trial on its premises in seven cities in Finland. Kesko’s charging point network will double the number of electric vehicle charging points, as well as make the retail conglomerate one of the leading charging point operators, in Finland. The network will also account for a fifth of the national target of building 2,000 charging points by 2020. The charging points will be powered by solar panels on the roofs of the retailer’s stores." SWITCH TO ELECTRIC CARS THREATENS 75,000 GERMAN AUTO INDUSTRY JOBS And finally, 75,000 jobs in the engine and gearbox industry could be at risk according to German trade unions. The auto industry itself is a pillar of the German economy with 840,000 jobs in the sector, and EV's are far more simple to construct. Whilst new jobs will be created in battery assembly, they say more will be lost. The report by Reuters quotes Volkswagen's top labour representative Bernd Osterloh: "electric car powertrains have only a sixth of the components when compared to combustion-engined variants, which means electric cars can be assembled more quickly. Electric cars take 30 percent less time to assemble than current passenger vehicles, Osterloh said. A battery factory requires only a fifth of the workforce when compared with an engine plant” Osterloh said. I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Friday 4th May 2018. VW BATTERY ANNOUNCEMENT GOES UNDER THE RADAR There was another big auto event and it wasn’t Tesla’s Q1 results. It was VW’s AGM. Tesla has a market capitalisation of $48.2bn. Shortly after the Q1 results and a strange earning call you and I will get onto later, VW signed battery contracts. And let me put this out there. Every single article I read today talked about Tesla losing value due to Elon Musk’s attitude on the investor call. Let me throw something your way, which might not be the whole reason, but I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere. Just after the Tesla announcement, VW Group said they have contracts on their battery supply and associated technology worth way more than previously announced. Worth DOUBLE previously announced. VW Group said they have contracts worth 40bn Euros, that’s $48bn. What did I just say Tesla was worth? That’s right, VW signed purchase contracts for just one part of their electric cars worth the whole of Tesla – autos and energy combined. My mind is a little blown. By 2025 VW will sell 3 million pure electric cars every single year, Chief Executive Officer Herbert Diess told investors Thursday at the annual shareholder meeting in Berlin. VW currently makes more cars in four days than Tesla does in a year and has enormous firepower. “By 2020 we will offer our customers more than 25 new electric models and more than 20 plug-in hybrids,” Diess said. “In just a few years’ time, then, across all brands and regions, we aim to put the world’s largest fleet of electric vehicles on the road.” KIA UNVEILS NIRO EV IN JEJU Kia Motors took us by surprise yesterday by unveiling the pure BEV version of its Niro crossover, at the fifth "Electric Vehicle Expo" on the resort island of Jeju. Korea’s second largest carmaker showed off its Niro alongside the Niro PHEV and the Soul EV. The Niro is interesting because many people went gaga for the Hyundai Kona earlier this year, particularly the long range version with a 64kWh LGChem pack, with thermal management, and although the price isn’t known it won’t be Tesla prices. And now it's sister company Kia to take the spotlight. The Niro has the same parts, so can do 380 kilometres on a single charge of the 64kWh pack or 240 km on the smaller 39.2 kWh battery. Also, for Kia prices you get front collision avoidance, lane keeping assist and highway driving assist systems. Last year Kia sold 23,647 Niro hybrids and plug-in hybrid models. Kia plans to begin selling the Niro EV in the domestic market sometime soon after July, having received more than 5,000 pre-orders for the Niro EVs in February. Both Hyundai and Kia models will be supply restricted for a long time. GO INSIDE THE RIMAC FACTORY FOR A CLOSER LOOK CNET has posted a video of the Rimac factory. They say: "The Rimac C Two promises to make 1,914 horsepower and 1,696 pound-feet of torque, which should propel the car to 60 miles per hour in 1.85 seconds. Rimac estimates that the C Two's top speed will be around 258 miles per hour. While the preproduction car debuted at Geneva this year, Rimac estimates that it will be over a year before they start getting delivered to customers." I'll post a link to CNET in the show notes. they say the video offers a look into the Rimac factory and "explains how a Croatian electric hypercar startup came to source the wheels for its 2,000 hp car from a relatively small bespoke wheel company in sunny Vista, California." The video is 6mins long and if you like close up super slo-motions, you’re in for a treat. FAREWELL FLUFFERBOT & EARNINGS CALL REACTION The Tesla earnings call was very entertaining for someone not invested in the company. Elon was tolerant at best of some of the questions, especially things he thought were dumb to ask. Some highlights… Supercharger V3 network - something along the lines of 200-250kW is ultimate for pack size and C rating. Elon is open to other car makers using the network, for a fee. Share Price - The company’s share price dropped 5% on Wednesday and slid further on Thursday, wiping more than $3.4bn off the value of the company Model Y production - set to start within 24 months, 2020 being later than a Reuters report suggested, and it won't be at Fremont. That new facility’s location hasn’t been decided yet. Semi - 2,000 reserved. They're not actively selling. Musk said they could build a 500mile truck today, and by the time it launches, they'll have 600miles cracked. Is that because all these road tests are showing the letting regen do it's work on a heavy truck is giving them more range? Or platooning? Or better battery tech we don't know about? One thing JB Straubel said, when it was pointed out Daimler said the Semi was against the laws of physics, he didn't feel Daimler understood exactly what Tesla could do with batteries. China - He also mentioned that a Gigafactory for China would also be announced soon. And every future Giga factory would have car production and battery production under one roof. Cells - Cells used in Model 3 are the highest energy density cells used in any electric vehicle. “We have achieved this by significantly reducing cobalt content per battery pack while increasing nickel content and still maintaining superior thermal stability.” He gave us an insight into why the robots had held up production of the Model 3, including a machine which was trying to automate the process of bonding some fluff on top of the battery pack to deaden the sound, which is turns out wasn’t needed anyway. And the machine couldn’t match it up in the right place, a machine Elon dubbed Flufferbot. Sadly, it had to go. In a moment of pure internet, a Flufferbot now has it’s own twitter account. And in a moment which reminded me of pure Steve Jobs, when he wanted Apple to be a private company which didn't answer to bozo analysts (although I think analysts are a fine bunch of folk) Elon let rip. He cut off one question and then, after another, took a 14 second pause and went to a young YouTuber who seems to have found his way onto the call by way of a campaign to ask one question for retail investors. Elon kept him on for TWELVE questions. So established media and analysts got upset because their exclusive club had been gate-crashed and they had a good moan online today. Bernstein: "Beneath the bizarre theatrics, however, we see Tesla's Q1 as in-line with expectations on most metrics, including revenues, gross margins, and free cash flow." Morgan Stanley: "Irrespective of the Tesla CEO's annoyance with the genre of questions he was receiving from the analyst community, we note that an important part of Tesla's success has been its relationship with the capital markets in funding its ambitious plans." JP Morgan: "We expect TSLA to fall today after CEO Elon Musk dismissed multiple analyst questions as 'dry' and 'boring' (including questions probing what we feel are key topics, such as profitability of the Model 3 and the company's capital requirements)." Piper Jaffray: " The unorthodox behaviour sparked an after-hours sell-off. We still recommend TSLA, but in the next few months especially, we would expect significant volatility." Baird: "Ignore the noise and focus on metrics. TSLA reported solid results and is successfully ramping Model 3 vehicle and battery production" Nomura: "No shareholder wants to see a CEO lose his patience over important, albeit mundane questions" Evercore ISI: ""'Wow' is the only way to describe the Tesla Q1 call which was unlike anything we have heard before." NEW SWEDISH CAR POLICIES EXPECTED TO BOOST ELECTRIC CAR MARKET SHARE IN SWEDEN Zachary at Clean Technica has picked up on a story about new tax in Sweden from July which will penalise gas and diesel, whilst plug ins get a boost. In the first three years of owning an ICE car based on CO2 emissions. Sweden has 6.1% of new vehicle registrations being plug ins, and previous 5 year exemption to vehicle tax is now completely removed and zero emission vehicles get a bonus up to 25% of the list price, which is up to $6,700, for something like a Nissan LEAF. Whereas buying a BMW i3 REX gets you $5,600 bonus. ENPHASE REPORTS ‘DECENT’ Q1 2018 EARNINGS AS CFO RESIGNS And the last story today, a bit of solar. First up Enphase, makers of micro-inverters. Which particularly interest me, I don't have solar at the moment and really want to start adding some. However I also want to cashflow it, and also want to build up with some on the garage roof before any on the house. So micro-inverters would be an interesting way to scale up if i get some solar this year. I like that each panel can generate grid-ready AC power. Their latest results were $70m of revenue in Q1 18 and their cash balance was almost double, largely due to private equity investment in the quarter. They shipped 611,000 micro inverters last year. The IQ7, their latest model now available in the US and UK, soon Germany and Austria. "Unlike the rest of its inverters, the IQ 8 platform is designed to support both grid-tied and off-grid applications, supported by the company’s Ensemble software" say GreenTechMedia.
