Was passiert, wenn der Gipfel zum Greifen nah ist – und du trotzdem umdrehst?In dieser Folge spricht Benjamin mit David Göttler, einem der bekanntesten deutschen Profi-Bergsteiger. David hat den Mount Everest ohne zusätzlichen Sauerstoff bestiegen, war mehrfach am Nanga Parbat unterwegs und zählt zu den Menschen, die sich bewusst für einen besonders puristischen Stil im Höhenbergsteigen entscheiden: ohne Flaschensauerstoff, ohne Sherpa-Unterstützung, ohne den leichtesten Weg.Dabei geht es in dieser Episode nicht nur ums Bergsteigen. The Toscanini Conspiracy – Arturo Toscanini, Fascism, and the Italian Resistance with Filippo IannaroneIn this episode of the Explaining History Podcast, we are joined by Italian author Filippo Iannarone to discuss his acclaimed crime novel, The Toscanini Conspiracy – a story that weaves together a real‑life cold case, the anti‑fascist resistance of conductor Arturo Toscanini, and the author's own family history of heroic opposition to Mussolini and Hitler.The novel began with a chance encounter. While travelling in Val d'Orcia, Filippo discovered a small inn called Locanda Toscanini and asked the host why it bore the name of the legendary conductor. The answer opened a door to a forgotten story: the murder of Dr. Rinaldi, a physician and friend of Toscanini, in 1935 – the same year Mussolini invaded Ethiopia. The case was never solved. But as Filippo dug through newspaper archives and court documents, he found that it exposed a hidden world of anti‑fascist activity in a small Tuscan village.That village became a gathering place for intellectuals, artists, and dissidents – including the explorer Umberto Nobile, fashion designer Salvatore Ferragamo, and Anita Garibaldi – all resisting the tightening grip of Mussolini's regime. At the centre of it all was Arturo Toscanini, the most famous conductor in the world, who had already been beaten by fascist thugs for refusing to play the regime's anthem. Later, he would reject a personal invitation from Adolf Hitler to conduct at Bayreuth – a decision that carried immense symbolic weight.But Filippo's story is also deeply personal. His uncle, Major General Michele Iannarone, was a hero of the Italian Resistance. A monarchist officer who served on the Eastern Front and developed contacts with German officers opposed to Hitler, he became one of the commanders of Rome's clandestine military resistance after the fall of Mussolini in July 1943. When Rome was occupied by the Nazis, his network of thousands of partisans coordinated with the Allies, saved Jewish families, and kept the German army occupied until the Americans arrived.We discuss the brutal civil war that raged in Italy from 1943 until well after the war's end, the forgotten role of monarchist partisans, the trauma of the "years of lead" in the 1970s, and the uncomfortable continuities between fascism and today's far‑right movements across Europe and America. Anne Haug aus Bayreuth hat Triathlon-Geschichte geschrieben: 2019 hat sie als erste Deutsche den legendären Ironman auf Hawaii gewonnen. Als Leistungssportlerin war sie eine Spätstarterin, hat erst mit 20 Jahren das leistungsorientierte Schwimmen gelernt. Seit vergangenem Jahr ist sie nun Triathlon-Rentnerin auf der Kanaren-Insel Lanzarote und blickt dankbar auf die Zeit im Leistungssport. Warum sie von einem Moment auf den anderen wusste, dass ihre Karriere vorbei ist, welche Pläne sie jetzt hat und wie jeder von uns seine eigenen Grenzen sprengen kann, das erzählt Anne Haug bei Dominique Knoll. 

In der Nacht zum 9. Januar 2022 wird die Idylle der oberfränkischen Gemeinde Mistelbach bei Bayreuth brutal zerstört. In honor of International Women's Day 2026, End Witch Hunts hosted a powerful panel discussion bringing together advocates, legal experts, journalists, and survivors to raise awareness about witchcraft accusations targeting women in Nigeria and across Africa. This conversation is part of the global "Give to Gain" initiative — the theme of International Women's Day 2026 — calling on individuals, organizations, and governments to give resources, empathy, legal support, and voice so that women accused of witchcraft can gain justice, safety, and dignity.Witchcraft accusations disproportionately target women, especially those who are poor, widowed, elderly, or otherwise vulnerable. Accusation can mean social ostracism, physical violence, displacement, imprisonment, and even death. In geopolitiek, in de nationale politiek, in de cultuur en zeker ook in de Oranjehistorie. Jaap Jansen en PG Kroeger duiken in de historische jaren rond een serie thema's die dit jaar de volle aandacht zullen krijgen. Het is een jaar waarin belangrijke politieke partijen als PvdA en D66 grote jubilea vieren. Maar ook een jaar waarin het Oranjehuis politieke en familiaire crises misschien maar liever niet herdenkt. En op wereldschaal staan de Verenigde Staten in het brandpunt. Daar herdenkt men de oorsprong, het oude ideaal, maar ook de gruwelijkste terreurdaad die deze wereldmacht trof. En in de wereld van de kunsten? Drie vooruitstrevende democratische partijen fuseerden: een bundeling van verschillende tradities en idealen. De nieuwe PvdA ontstond door het samengaan van klassieke marxistische, links-liberale en christendemocratische stromingen. De droom tijdens de bezettingsjaren van maatschappelijke vernieuwing werd concreet vertaald in een poging tot 'doorbraak' uit verstarde politieke en sociaal-culturele verhoudingen. Weg met de oude scheidslijnen van hoog en laag en van zuilen en ideologische tegenstellingen. Maar die doorbraak kwam maar mondjesmaat. “Sterft, gij oude vormen en gedachten” klonk mooi, maar die vormen wilden maar niet sterven. Teleurgestelde liberalen en pacifisten verlieten de nieuwe partij. Zo ontstonden 'afscheuringspartijen' als VVD en PSP. De actualiteit van de PvdA is historisch gezien dus verrassend logisch. Opnieuw ziet men kans om een doorbraak naar verwante idealen en nieuwe generaties te realiseren. De fusiepartij van toen fuseert opnieuw, nu met GroenLinks. 2] 60 jaar D66 In de levendige jaren ’60 werd ‘een krankzinnig avontuur’ aangevangen. Een politieke 'startup' met als gezicht Hans van Mierlo. Een nieuwe partij die eigenlijk teruggreep op die vernieuwingsidealen van 1946. Men wilde af van gezapigheid en verzuiling, het gepolder met sociale partners en het confessionele midden. Nadruk op technocratisch pragmatisme en enthousiasme voor staatkundige vernieuwing. Van Mierlo liet zich meeslepen in de polarisatiedrift van jongeren in de PvdA, de partij waarmee D66 een Progressieve Volkspartij wilde realiseren. Maar uiteindelijk stond Van Mierlo alleen. Zijn opvolger Jan Terlouw liet de partij opnieuw electoraal omhoog klimmen. Maar toen hij koos tegen de PvdA en voor samenwerking met het CDA, wilde de achterban hem niet meer als leider. Pas in 1994 kon met Paars het anti-zuilen ideaal herleven, maar ook toen profiteerden vooral de oude zuilenpartijen VVD en PvdA en herrees uiteindelijk zelfs het CDA. De échte doorbraak kwam toen Alexander Pechtold het aandurfde veel oude 'kroonjuwelen' te dumpen. Heel pragmatisch. Hij hield Rutte II, een kabinet van VVD en PvdA overeind. Net als Van Mierlo ooit, voerde hij 'oppositie vóór het kabinet'. Pechtold profileerde zich ideologisch als bestrijder van radicaal-rechts en maakte D66 weer groot. En hij selecteerde Rob Jetten als het gezicht van een nieuwe generatie en een nieuwe nadrukkelijke ‘midden' versie van D66. Met Jettens premierschap wacht D66 opnieuw een krankzinnig avontuur. 3] Een groot Oranjejaar, hoewel… 70 jaar Greet Hofmans affaire. 60 jaar rellen en rookbom bij het huwelijk van Beatrix met Claus. 50 jaar Lockheed. Elk hiervan zorgde voor een hoop rumoer en soms wanhopige pogingen van de Haagse politiek waar mogelijk afstand te houden van het monarchale gedoe. Zowel Willem Drees als Joop den Uyl benutten het instrument van een ‘Commissie van drie' om zelf de handen schoon te houden en op basis van wijs, onpartijdig advies de Oranjes klem te zetten. In retrospectief valt op dat Greet Hofmans politiek meer impact had dan zij zelf voor mogelijk moet hebben gehouden, ondanks haar 'ingevingen van het hogere'. Want door haar perikelen kwam uiteindelijk de Lockheed-affaire en zonder Lockheed was Dries van Agt geen premier geworden. 4] 25 jaar 9/11 2026 is een historisch jaar voor en in de Verenigde Staten. Na de festiviteiten rond 4 juli zal de aandacht vooral uitgaan naar de herdenking van de aanslagen op 11 september 2001. Ongetwijfeld zullen velen zich bezinnen op de gebeurtenissen en wanhoop van toen en hun nasleep tot de dag van vandaag. Weet jij nog waar je was toen het gebeurde? En hoe zal Donald Trump hiermee om gaan? Artistiek was het een groot succes als evenement voor de jetset, de aristocratie, koningshuizen en moderne kunstenaars en rebelse geesten van die tijd niet minder. Bayreuth liep zo vol, dat Karl Marx geen onderdak meer kon vinden en een kaartje evenmin. Na dit eerste Festival was het dreigend bankroet onthutsend, maar ook geen weg meer terug. Overal ter wereld, tot de dag van vandaag, werd het gekopieerd als nieuw fenomeen van de evenementencultuur. Ook hierin bleek Richard Wagner een ongeëvenaard revolutionair. Die Eröffnung der ersten Bayreuther Festspiele im Jahr 1876 war ein wichtiges künstlerisches Ereignis. Richard Wagner hatte sich einen Traum erfüllt und das, was manche für eine irrwitzige Kopfgeburt gehalten hatten, zu Realität werden lassen. Einer Realität, die noch heute wirksam ist. Die Bayreuther Festspiele sind alljährlich Anziehungspunkt. Mit dem Beginn der Festspiele 1876 rückte die Kleinstadt Bayreuth in den Mittelpunkt des allgemeinen und großen Interesses.
