The Unnamed Automotive Podcast breaks into the big 4-0-0, but this week's episode lacks much fanfare or frills. After a brief discussion about the 399+ episodes that came before today, the guys dive right into talking about the new cars they've been testing. Sami delivers his verdict of the 2025 Acura RDX, a luxury SUV that goes against some very impressive rivals and has a few things to rave about, but a few more things that question the brand's commitment to the segment. Then Benjamin talks about a new powertrain option found in the Ford Ranger, one that may be faster than other, more performance oriented trucks. While the Ranger is smaller than an F-Series, it has a few important benefits, and Benjamin runs you through them all. Thanks everyone for listening to 400 (and more) episodes. We can't wait to deliver even more in the coming months and years!

Shoot us a Text.As another week comes to a close, we're grateful for the auto industry. Today we're covering how inflation is affecting repos, how demand is affecting Ford's production plans and how iPhones and Androids might finally get along.Show Notes with linksAuto repossessions are up 23% in the first half of 2024, surpassing pre-pandemic levels and indicating financial stress among consumers as interest rates and inflation strain household budgets.Vehicle seizures decreased during the pandemic due to leniency and stimulus checks, but have now surged back, with repos increasing 14% compared to 2019.Subprime auto borrowers are struggling, with 5.62% at least 60 days late on payments in June.Average interest rates: 7.3% for new cars, 11.5% for used cars; monthly payments average $739 for new and $549 for used, according to EdmundsRelief might come later this year, with some anticipating the Fed lowering interest rates in September, allowing the opportunity for refinancing and new buyers.Jeremy Robb, senior director of economic and industry insights at Cox Automotive summed it up: “I think a lot of consumers are really waiting to see if interest rates come down a little. That's kept a lot of people on the sidelines.” Ford Motor Company again has slowed down its EV plans, repurposing its Canadian Oakville Assembly plant to build larger gasoline-powered F-Series trucks, delaying the launch of three-row electric SUVs.The Oakville facility will now add capacity for 100,000 F-Series Super Duty trucks.“Super Duty is a vital tool for businesses and people around the world, and, even with our Kentucky Truck Plant and Ohio Assembly Plant running flat out, we can't meet the demand,” said Ford CEO Jim Farley.Ford lost nearly $4.7 billion on its EV business in 2023, with projected losses up to $5.5 billion this year. The company plans to invest about $3 billion to expand Super Duty production, securing 1,800 jobs at Oakville and adding about 220 jobs at engine and component plants.Apple's iOS 18 finally brings RCS support to iPhones, significantly improving messaging between iPhone and Android users. Photos are now high-resolution, ending the era of blurry, tiny images.iOS 18, currently in Beta but available on iPhone, includes homescreen customization, Siri improvements, and revamped Photos app.Apple added RCS (Rich Communication Services) support as a minor feature,  this comes after years of Apple refusing to bow to pressure to adopt the messaging standard.RCS improves messaging with features like typing indicators, read receipts, and high-res media. The green bubble persists with Android users, and Apple's RCS implementation lacks encryption.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

On Tuesday, February 6th, 2024, Ford Motor Company announced its latest earnings. The company's CEO, Jim Farley, stated during the call, "Last year was a foundational year for our company. The impact of choices made regarding power and powertrains is evident, particularly for the F-Series. Our global hybrid sales increased 20% last year, and we project a further 40% increase this year. In the U.S., we're the number one and two best-selling hybrid trucks, with Maverick taking the lead, making us the third top hybrid brand behind Toyota and Honda." Farley also spotlighted the company's progress with their technology, mentioning, "BlueCruise has surpassed 150 million miles of hands-free use, with quarter-over-quarter growth up by 25%, and the gross margins for both BlueCruise and Ford Pro Intelligence are at 70%-plus." He acknowledged the firm's success in work vehicle production, specifically the new Super Duty, Transit, and Ranger models. In 2023, Ford saw an 11% rise in revenue, reaching an adjusted EBIT of $10.4 billion. The company also presented a healthy financial state with nearly $29 billion in cash reserves and over $46 billion in liquidity, demonstrating its resilience against potential market uncertainties. In 2023, the standout was the Ford Pro division, which includes both hardware and software services. It achieved a doubling of EBIT to $7 billion, attributed to steady demand, a desirable product mix, and a focus on profitability. Farley discussed the division's potential, saying, "This is a robust profitability; we've never had 20% attach rates, 0.5 million units of software with 50% margins. We are only just beginning to concentrate on Pro aftersales, where 20% of the profit is coming from attached services." The earnings call indicated a customer preference towards environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient options, as seen in the strong sales of Ford's hybrid vehicles. Consumer interest in advanced technology and digital connectivity in vehicles is also evident in the popularity of Ford's services such as BlueCruise and Ford Pro Intelligence. Although Ford did not reveal specific future plans or investments, its financial results confirmed the company's dedication to fiscal discipline, shareholder returns, quality improvements, and further development of the Ford Pro business segment. Ford is looking at profitability and cost reduction, with a particular interest in the electric vehicle sector. However, while the company appears to be heading in a positive direction, future prospects can only be ascertained through action and results. For more comprehensive details regarding Ford's strategic direction and future initiatives, refer to the full earnings call transcript or other public company materials. Walther set out to fix every complaint possible from user feedback on the PPQ to make the PDP a robust duty and competitive firearm. Cody from Walther talks about their approach to launching the PDP, instead of a slow rollout Walther launched five different models of the PDP at one time with multiple build options for each. THE WEEKLY DRIVER

As we do periodically throughout the year, on this week's episode of The Weekly Driver Podcast co-host Bruce Aldrich and I get caught up on the automotive industry news. There's always a lot happening, and our topics cover a wide range. First, car names can mean a lot toward the success or failure of an automobile. We found a recent list on a prominent auto site that lists the top-25 worst car names in history. The list comes to mind with the not-too-long-ago naming of the pending new Ferrari sport utility vehicle. It will be called the Purosangue. The concept cars at 2021 LA Auto Show included the Mullen Five. The EV sedan hasn't been made. Image © Bruce Aldrich/2021. Ferrari, of course, has long been associated with horses and its "Prancing Pony" logo. The new Ferrari is named after the word for an Italian thoroughbred. It's pronounced PURO-o-SAN-gue, and it's a hideous name. The list of the 25 oddball names of cars is a fun read, so have a listen. Also on this episode this I will be attending the LA Auto Show this week (Nov, 16-18) while Bruce produces my daily podcast interviews from the Los Angeles Convention Center. Electric vehicles will again be emphasized this year, and VinFast, the Vietnamese manufacturer, will be again be part of that portion of the show. VinFast will be the first Vietnamese car available in the United States with the pending debut in 2023. Speaking of debuts, as always the LA Auto Show will have its share of global and North American debuts. Manufacturer ambassadors are always par of the LA Auto Show. Image © James Raia/2014. The 115th The LA Auto Show will be held Nov. 18-26 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Charge Cars, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, ElectraMeccanica, Fiat, Genesis, GMC, Hummer, Hyundai, INDI EV, Jaguar, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, Porsche, Subaru, Supernal (Advanced Air Mobility), Volkswagen, Volvo and the abovementioned VinFast will have all exhibitions. But arguably the best bets, the most consistent, the cars for the every person, are presented every year. New models from the top-10 best-selling vehicles from 2021 will all be presented. Ford continued its dominance with the F-Series pickups accounting for 726,004 sales. The Ram pickup (569,388), Chevrolet Silverado (519,774), Toyota RAV-4 (407,739), Honda CR-V (361,271), Toyota Camry (313,795), Nissan Rogue (285,602), Jeep Cherokee (264,444), Toyota Highlander (264,128) and Honda Civic (263,787) completed the top-10. Despite the continuing chip shortage and Covid-19 ramifications, only the Chevrolet Silverado (down 13 percent), Ford F-Series pickup trucks (8 percent) and Toyota RAV4 (5 percent) had lower sales tallies in 2021 than in 2020. Bollinger Motors exhibited its concept vehicles for the past several years at the LA Auto Show. They've never been manufactured. Image © James Raia/2019. Manufacturers aren't required to detail what vehicles will be shown at the LA Auto Show. Some new offerings have been announced, others will be unveiled as late as the week of the show. Honda recently announced the public availability of the 315-horsepower 2023 Civic Type R. It's the most powerful production vehicle the manufacturer has ever sold, and its will have a starting MSRP of $42,895. Toyota has eliminated V6 Highlander, replacing for 2-23 with a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder. The new model will also feature new multimedia dashboard-area screens and new exterior paint choice, Cypress Green. The Weekly Driver Podcast encourages and appreciates feedback from our listeners. Linda Zhang is the chief engineer responsible for leading the team delivering an all-electric version of Ford's F-150 pickup truck, the best-selling pick-up truck in the world. Ford Motor Company, like the rest of the global auto industry, has been dealing with problems in the automotive supply chain for more than two years now.First, it was computer chips, when electronics companies decided it would be better to allocate chips for work-from-home technologies than for cars during COVID lockdowns. The problems subsequently expanded to other parts — so much so that Ford recently disclosed that it has made some 45,000 vehicles with parts missing. Some of those to-be-completed vehicles, it turns out, could be missing Ford's brand name — literally. The Wall Street Journal reports that Ford has delayed deliveries of some vehicles because the company ran low on the ubiquitous blue oval logos that adorn most Ford vehicles.People familiar with the matter told the paper that the issue impacted Ford badges as well as vehicle model name plates, particularly for its best-selling, highly profitable F-Series pickups. The report also noted that a company that has produced Ford logos in the past, Tribar Technologies of Howell, Michigan, was forced to reduce its operations last month after it reported discharging industrial chemicals into local sewers. Both Ford and Tribar did not comment about whether the issues were related; Tribar told the Journal that wastewater systems captured the chemicals before they reached a local waterway, and that it is back up and running at full capacity.Ford, meanwhile, weighed other potential solutions. The company reportedly considered 3D-printing the badges before officials ultimately decided against it amid concerns about their quality. For now, the company said it is retrofitting vehicles that are missing the logos before delivering them to dealers.Ford last week also announced a reshuffling of its executive team, including its supply chain operations. CFO John Lawler will begin reworking the automaker's supply lines until it hires a new executive to lead the supply chain. This is IEN Now.z

Show #1451 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Saturday 30th April, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. THE FORD F-150 LIGHTNING ELECTRIC TRUCK HAS MORE POWER THAN WE THOUGHT! - Ford just announced that the power and payload ratings it had specified for the Lightning pickup are wrong. Luckily, they're "wrong" in the right direction—meaning the final horsepower and payload figures for the F-150 Lightning area actually better than expected. - originally was quoted as offering 426 hp with the standard-range pack and 563 with the juicier extended-range setup. Ford now says the standard-range model packs 452 hp, up 26 hp from Ford's "targeted" number, and the extended-range version doles out a mighty 580 hp, up 17 hp - it makes the standard-range Lightning the most powerful F-150 pickup ever - Ford also says the F-150 Lightning's payload figures have been revised upward, though less impressively so than the horsepower numbers. Certain, unspecified versions of the Lightning can "now haul an extra 235 pounds," per Ford, lifting the maximum one of the electric trucks can carry to 2,235 pounds. · Original Source : https://www.motortrend.com/news/2022-f-150-lightning-revised-power-payload-ratings/ FORD'S NEXT-GEN ELECTRIC TRUCK WILL HAVE ACTIVE AERO, MORE RANGE - Ford launched the F-150 Lightning earlier this week, and company CEO Jim Farley hinted at what is to come next. He let slip that the company's Tennessee manufacturing facility would produce a different type of F-Series pickup when production started there in a few years. - he did speak with Laycee from the Miss GoElectric YouTube Channel, who revealed on the latest InsideEVs.com podcast episode (34:44 mark) that the new pickup would have a radical design that some could find controversial. - Farley told her that the new electric pickup would feature active and deployable aero similar to a semi-truck, with the design focusing on maximizing efficiency. - The new truck would allegedly cost about $7,000 more than the F-150 Lightning and offer about 100 miles more of range. That means the Ford could offer 400-plus miles (643-plus kilometers). The current F-150 Lightning can deliver up to 320 miles (514 km). Ford has spent the last two years developing this new truck. - Ford will produce the new pickup at its manufacturing complex in Tennessee. - Blue Oval City, will produce the next generation of electric F-Series trucks and batteries. The site will have three gigafactories. The complex will see operations begin in 2025, so it could be a bit before we see this new pickup. Original Source : https://www.motor1.com/news/582926/ford-next-electric-truck-aero-range/ LUCID CEO MADE OVER $260 MILLION IN PERFORMANCE-BASED AWARDS IN 2021 - Lucid Group CEO Peter Rawlinson earned more than $260 million in performance-based awards last year - In March 2021, Lucid Group's board awarded Rawlinson about 13.8 million time-based units of stock that vest over four years beginning at the end of 2021, plus 16 million performance-based stock units. - The entire award was valued by the company at a whopping $556 million, according to a filing on April 28. Rawlinson's $263 million payday is one of the largest compensation packages paid to any executive in 2021. - The company's market value remained high enough over a six-month period for Rawlinson to collect four of the five tranches of performance-based units, according to the filing. - Lucid Group recently said it needed more cash to fund its plans, which include a second factory in Saudi Arabia, expected to open in 2025. The company raised $2 billion in convertible debt in December, but Bloomberg Intelligence forecasts that the startup may have to sell more stock to raise the necessary funds. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/583003/lucid-ceo-made-over-260-million-usd-performance-based-awards-2021/ SHELL AWARDS ANOTHER CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE FRAMEWORK CONTRACT TO ABB - ABB has signed a new global framework agreement with Shell to supply its complete portfolio of AC and DC charging stations. The products range from the AC wallbox for homes, businesses and retail to the Terra 360 HPC charging point. - Shell reportedly intends to operate 500,000 charging points worldwide by 2025. By 2030, this number is to increase to 2.5 million. To achieve this, the oil company needs one thing above all: lots of charging points. Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2022/04/29/shell-awards-another-charging-infrastructure-framework-contract-to-abb/ - Shell does not provide any further details on this in the strategy, so it is unclear which markets they will cover with how many charge points. Going by past activities, Shell has been active in several markets, reaching across Europe and even Canada. Recent acquisitions or attempts include NEw Motion and Ubitricity and Shell is a partner of Ionity. Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2021/02/12/shell-to-install-half-a-million-charge-points-by-2025/ BIG OIL WANTS A PIECE OF THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE PIE - The likes of Shell, TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil, Equinor, and BP are all backing EV projects as they expand their portfolios to include non-traditional energy sectors. - In Europe, Shell has been just one of the oil majors to expand its EV charging network over the last year. Shell's subsidiary, ubitricity – standing for ubiquitous electricity – is using innovative technologies to enhance access to EV charging stations by powering cars across cities through lamp posts. Shell's public charging network, Shell Recharge, expects to have over 500,000 charging points globally by 2025, establishing locations across supermarkets, street-charging points, and EV hubs. - Shell is also leading by example by establishing an EV charging hub in London, replacing its petrol and diesel pumps with ultra-rapid 175kW charge points - Last year, Equinor also announced a $130-million investment in Solid Power, a U.S. firm developing all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) for electric vehicles. The BMW Group and Ford have also partnered with Solid Power to acquire ASSBs for their new EV models. Equinor believes the development of ASSBs could provide lower-cost EV batteries to the market. - This April, BP sent EV stock soaring with the announcement of a multi-year contract with Tritium. Tritium will provide almost 1,000 chargers for the U.K., Australian, and New Zealand markets. Original Source : https://oilprice.com/Energy/Energy-General/Big-Oil-Wants-A-Piece-Of-The-Electric-Vehicle-Pie.html BYD IS CLOSER TO 1 TWH THAN TESLA: CAPACITY ALREADY SURPASSED 500 GWH - In April 2020, Elon Musk suggested Tesla plants would not be named Gigafactories anymore. They would be called Terafactories, implying they would deliver more than 1 TWh in battery packs. With the 4680 cell delays, BYD is closer to achieving 1 TWh than Tesla. - Bridget McCarthy mapped all the cell plants BYD currently has and concluded it has an amazing installed capacity above 500 GWh. To be more precise, we're talking about 522 GWh, which is not counting a huge battery factory planned for Europe and some other plants – such as Huangpi, in Wuhan – that still have not disclosed how many cells they will be able to manufacture. - Tesla planned to make 100 GWh at Giga Nevada but would be delivering around 30 GWh. Most of its cars now need suppliers such as LG Energy Solution and CATL, which provides Tesla with LFP cells. - The list provided by the financial analyst at Snow Capital is impressive. Original Source : https://www.autoevolution.com/news/byd-is-closer-to-1-twh-than-tesla-capacity-already-surpassed-500-gwh-187738.html Bridget McCarthy on Twitter: “In less than a week, 12 different business units within BYD completely shifted to mask production. In just five weeks, BYD went from producing zero masks, to being the WORLD'S LARGEST SURGICAL MASK PRODUCER. By May, BYD was producing over 50M masks per day. - In a matter of days, BYD's designers drew more than 400 renderings of mask machines, the electronics group prepared the necessary parts, & 3,000 engineers from 13 business divisions started building. A week later, BYD was producing masks to be sent around the world. - The teams (i.e. battery business unit vs. logistics department) competed to have the highest daily mask output. BYD yanked battery engineers from the then-top-secret Blade battery project to oversee mask production, one of whom continually topped the “dragon and tiger list”. Show #1445 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Sunday 24th April, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. WHY THE F-150 LIGHTNING LAUNCH IS A PIVOTAL MOMENT FOR FORD AND EVS - Ford Motor Co. will become the first legacy automaker to launch a mainstream electric pickup — a pivotal moment for the automaker that potentially could accelerate the push to electrify America's vehicle fleet given F-150's profitability and popularity. - But being early also makes it that much more important for Ford to pull this off without any major hitches, experts say — even as the company attempts to ramp up production volumes amid myriad supply-chain disruptions, an ongoing pandemic, rising commodity costs and geopolitical tensions - It's difficult to overstate the importance of the F-Series lineup to Ford's business. - In a typical year, the truck franchise nets sales of roughly 900,000 trucks. It's been the best-selling truck in the U.S. for 45 consecutive years. And it is Ford's cash cow, generating more revenue than the major U.S. sports leagues combined, as well as Fortune 100 companies like Nike Inc. and the Coca-Cola Co., according to a 2020 Boston Consulting Group study commissioned by Ford. - Ford now is moving to boost annual Lightning production to 150,000 units by next year. Overall, the company is investing $50 billion in electrification through 2026 and eyeing annual production of more than 2 million EVs globally by then. - The company has said that the majority of Lightning reservations have come from customers who are new to Ford — not the automaker's truck base. Original Source : https://eu.detroitnews.com/story/business/autos/ford/2022/04/24/ford-f-150-lightning-electric-truck-launch-ev/7382547001/ FORD PATENTS TANK TURN, POSSIBLY FOR F-150 LIGHTNING - Rivian made quite a splash with its viral video portraying one of its R1T electric pickups essentially turning on the spot, like a tank, by driving the wheels on one side forward, while the others are going in reverse. However, the feature is not currently present in its production vehicles, and Ford also patented its own version - The patent drawing below shows what appears to be an F-150 Lightning but text makes no direct mention of that truck - unlike the Rivian R1T and R1S, the Ford F-150 Lightning doesn't come with a quad-motor setup, with one motor driving each individual wheel. So far, Ford has only announced dual-motor versions, and in order for those to be able to perform a tank turn, the manufacturer will need to resort to reversing one side and not the other via gears, or just applying lock to all four wheels. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/581678/ford-patent-tank-turn-f150-lightning/ MORE AMERICANS VIEW ELECTRIC VEHICLES AS A PRIMARY CAR - A new consumer survey conducted by MINI USA reveals various shifts in American consumers' sentiment toward electric vehicles (EVs) over the last three years. The survey, which repeated the same set of questions used in a 2019 questionnaire carried out by MINI USA, indicates that more Americans – and particularly younger and female consumers – view electric vehicles as a primary car in the household more than any other use case.  This represents a shift from 2019 where more respondents selected “commuting car” and “city car” as preferred uses.  Commissioned by Engine's CARAVAN®, the survey further explores consumers‘ level of knowledge about the EV infrastructure in their regions, as well as personal attitudes toward EV ownership and travel needs. - A point that has remained consistent from both surveys is daily   travel distance, as 76% of respondents say that 75 miles of battery   range is sufficient for everyday driving. Only a 3% increase over the   course of three years, consumers' daily driving distances continue to   remain well below the current range of all new electric vehicles on   the market today. - About 63% of all respondents in 2022 still consider EV owners to     be early adopters, which is only 3% lower over the last three years.     While this pioneering connotation may sound complimentary to some,     it highlights a need for more mainstream awareness of the     accessibility, daily usage, and convenience of electric vehicles today. - Greater visibility for charging stations is needed, though some     progress has been made. About 35% of consumers now know where their     nearest EV charging port is located, a slight improvement from 26%     in 2019. They have signed a framework agreement and say they will roll out the DC infrastructure “at scale.” - Mer Norway (formerly Grønn Kontakt) was founded in 2009 and has since built over 300 fast-charging stations throughout Norway. Owned by Statkraft, the company also has a foothold in Sweden, Germany, Austria, and the UK. - Kempower has a range of DC charging stations delivering 40 to 320 kW. The company did not state which type of hardware Mer will use in Norway. The system is especially ideal for electric buses and parties offering fast charging for electric passenger cars. The need for simultaneous and frequent fast charging is easily fulfilled with S-Series charging satellite posts.  Due to the modular structure, the standard Kempower charging system offers power from 40 kW to 600 kW. - The S-Series charging satellite system consists of a C-Series charging power unit and 4 double satellites or 8 single satellites, with a maximum total of 8 charging outputs. Inside the cabinet, there are Kempower power modules that each provide 40 kW of charging power. 1 to 4 modules can be installed in a single C-Series cabinet whereas one charging power unit can have 1 to 3 cabinets. All in all up to 12 modules can be installed in a charging power unit.  You can start with one module and acquire more when needed. The charging power can be distributed dynamically into each charging output.
