When Raffi Garabedian co-founded Electric Hydrogen in 2020, he saw existing electrolyzers as too small and expensive to make green hydrogen economically viable. Instead of building standard sub-megawatt units, his team aimed for 100-megawatt systems at half the industry cost. Initial market enthusiasm brought millions in capacity reservations, fueling construction of a Massachusetts manufacturing plant. Then came the "trough of disillusionment" – a global cooling on hydrogen as projects faltered under high costs. In this episode, Lara Pierpoint talks to Raffi about taking big technology risks while building a factory during market volatility. He explains why startups, not incumbents, are best positioned to drive the cost reductions needed to make green hydrogen competitive with fossil alternatives. Credits: Hosted by Lara Pierpoint. From day one of his professional life, Derek Warnick knew his career would be driven by a purpose greater than finance alone. As an undergraduate studying finance and international business, he sought ways to make a meaningful impact. Upon graduation, he joined the World Bank's International Finance Corporation, focusing on empowering small businesses in developing countries. “I was excited by the opportunity to help people and have an international focus,” he recalls. However, Warnicksoon realized he wanted to do more to address climate change. “I started to become much more interested in learning about how we could avert the worst effects of climate change,” he says. This passion led him to pursue an MBA at MIT Sloan, concentrating on clean energy finance. “I believe in utilizing a financial focus to further technology and business innovation,” Derek explains. “I don't think that the role of a CFO or a finance department should be an afterthought.”After his MBA, he joined a commodities trading firm but soon took on the role of CFO at a small power development startup. There, he gained hands-on experience in all aspects of finance and operations. “I had to do absolutely every single thing in a finance organization,” he says. “I enjoy walking that tightrope and being an operator.”His dedication to sustainable energy culminated in co-founding Electric Hydrogen, where he serves as CFO. “At Electric Hydrogen, we are singularly focused on bringing down the cost of industrial-scale decarbonization,” Derek states. He believes that providing cost-effective, scalable solutions is key to making a real impact on climate change. “I can't imagine doing something where I worked for a company that made widgets,” he reflects. “For me, there has to be that business purpose so that I'm excited about what I do.”Throughout his career, Derek has consistently chosen roles that align with his commitment to sustainable energy. “I firmly believe that if you have a job you love, you'll never work a day in your life,” he says.

On today's episode of Everything About Hydrogen, we speak with Raffi Garabedian, CEO and Co-Founder of Electric Hydrogen (EH2), a deep decarbonization company pioneering new technology for low cost, high efficiency, fossil free hydrogen systems. By using electrolyzers many times larger than the industry standard, EH2 aims to help eliminate more than 30% of global GHG emissions from difficult to electrify sectors like steel, ammonia, and freight.Raffi was previously the CTO of First Solar, the pioneering thin-film solar company, and before joining First Solar in 2008, he was founder and CEO of Touchdown Technologies. He has a long history of innovation and entrepreneurship in "hard-tech" ranging from automotive components to telecommunications subsystems. He holds over 20 issued patents and has learned a lot over the years about strategy, business development, product, manufacturing operations, leadership, and most importantly, building great teams. The EH2 leadership has revolutionized other clean energy sectors at Tesla and First Solar and they are backed by world-class climate tech investors like Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Prelude Ventures, Capricorn Investment Group, Energy Impact Partners, Fifth Wall Climate Tech, and S2G Ventures. The company also has partnerships with strategic investors that are leaders in their target sectors, including the Amazon Decarbonization Fund, Cosan, Equinor Ventures, Honeywell, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and Rio Tinto. We are excited to learn more from Raffi about the EH2 technology, lessons learned by scaling First Solar, and what we might expect to see next. ----LinksCompany Website: www.eh2.com EH2 Fundraising Press Release: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20220622005258/en/Electric-Hydrogen-Secures-198M-in-Financing-to-Decarbonize-Global-Industries-With-Fossil-Free-HydrogenElectric Hydrogen on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/electric-h2/Reach Raffi on LinkedIn: http://linkedin.com/in/raffigarabedian

What's the deal with electrolyzers?

Volts subscribers are likely well aware of the fact that a fully decarbonized energy system is going to require an enormous amount of hydrogen to fill in the gaps left by wind and solar. What's more, they are probably aware that hydrogen comes in a dazzling variety of colors, from blue to gray to brown, depending on the carbon intensity of the production. In the end, though, only one such color matters: green. That is to say, a fully decarbonized energy system is going to require lots and lots of hydrogen made with renewable energy, with no carbon emissions. The way to do that is to run water and electrical current through an electrolyzer, which splits the hydrogen off from the oxygen.Currently, about 95 percent of the world's hydrogen is made using fossil fuels. Green hydrogen — hydrogen made with renewable energy and electrolyzers — comprises only a sliver of the remaining 5 percent. Yet it's going to have to scale up to 100 percent in the next several decades, even as demand for hydrogen rises. This is all a familiar story, at least to energy nerds. But if you're anything like me, the more you think about it, the more you realize that, despite the key role they play in that story, you don't actually know very much about electrolyzers themselves. What are they, exactly? What do they look like? How can they be improved? What policy is supporting them?To talk through these questions, I contacted Raffi Garabedian, the CEO of Electric Hydrogen, a startup that has set out to rapidly drive down the cost of green hydrogen. Garabedian, who was previously chief technology officer at First Solar, believes that the market for green hydrogen today is roughly where the solar market was in 2008, with all the attendant risks and opportunities.Garabedian (quite patiently) walked me through the basics of electrolyzers, the current state of the market and the technology, the kind of cost improvements he believes are possible within the next five years, the increasingly supportive policy environment, and the future of green hydrogen. Large swaths of the global economy are very hard to decarbonize with renewables and batteries alone. Steel, cement, aviation – these industries are run on the high heat and explosive force of burning fossil fuels. Together, these activities make up the industrial basement of society; the often overlooked and essential sectors of the economy that can only be made possible, in part, by burning liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons.Cleaning up these sectors requires an energy-dense alternative that can go the distance. And that's exactly what today's guest, Electric Hydrogen CEO and co-founder Raffi Garabedian, is building.Raffi and the team at Electric Hydrogen are building the electrolyzers and supporting infrastructure that can produce the clean, green hydrogen needed to fuel our net-zero future.Hydrogen has the potential to replace the role of petrochemicals altogether. Burning hydrogen could generate the high temperatures that heavy industry requires – without any added carbon emissions. And it could also be used for synthetic fuels in aviation or shipping. But in order to do so, hydrogen production has to clean up its act.And that's what Raffi and Electric Hydrogen are doing by building massive electrolyzers – tractor trailer-sized machines that run electricity through water, splitting it into its basic elements: oxygen and hydrogen.Commercial electrolyzers today are typically 5-10 megawatts. But Electric Hydrogen is aiming for 100 megawatts to drive down costs. By building larger and more efficient electrolyzers with much higher energy inputs, the company aims to produce greater amounts of hydrogen at a price that would make it competitive with natural gas.Emily spoke to Raffi about what it takes to move fast and break bonds in their journey to get green hydrogen down to fossil fuel price parity. They also talked about the balance between being a technologist and entrepreneur, and the infrastructure and innovation we'll need for widespread green hydrogen use in tough to decarbonize industries.Powerhouse is an innovation firm that works with leading global corporations to help them find, partner with, invest in, and acquire the most innovative startups in clean energy, mobility, and climate. In the final episode of Season One of our Green Hydrogen series, we're looking at how Hydrogen might be useful to aid hard-to-abate industries such as Steel in achieving a zero-carbon future.  Let's get serious about carbon intensity for a minute: the steel industry produces approx 2.6 GIGATONS* of carbon emissions  annually, that's over 7% of total  global emissions and it's a product that is not optional in today's world. If you're having a hard time wrapping your head around that number, I give you a great example further down with a reference for further reading.  For this final episode of the season, Joachim von Scheele, Global Director of Commercialization for leading gas retailer, Linde, has set his sights on decarbonizing Steel and other large industry emitters through energy efficiency and, yes, Green Hydrogen.  As a longtime Global leader for Linde, Joachim has spent his 20 year career living and working in India, China, and Europe where these hard-to-abate industries are critical parts of the economy and the world's construction process.  Today, he provides a crash-course in steel manufacturing and Hydrogen production, along with a vision for how green hydrogen could possibly be the answer to decarbonizing this energy intensive sector.  And we're not just day-dreaming, here, Joachim gets calls daily from the industry leaders who are looking to transition to “green steel”.   The demand has arrived, but who will meet it?   Listen Now, on SunCast.   *the prefix “giga” means 109, or one billion (1,000,000,000). Hence terms like “gigawatt” or “gigahertz.” Thus, a gigaton is equivalent to a billion metric tons. So, 2.6 Gigatons = roughly 38 Billion Pounds (plus a little), therefore about 5.5 times the entire Human population in CO2 is being released into the atmosphere each year just by Steel alone. Let that sink in.Credit to Washinton Post  for this excellent article on the scale of Gigatons in Ice, CO2, etc from 2015  This is the last episode of our Green Hydrogen Mini-Series.  You can hear all five episodes and learn more about our experts at www.mysuncast.com/hydrogen  Episode 1 - Nexus of Deep Decarbonization & “The Inevitability of Hydrogen” with Sheldon Kimber, CEO Intersect Power Episode 2 - The Green Hydrogen Opportunity with DNVs Global Energy Storage leader and Hydrogen Industry Veteran, Jason Goodhand Episode 3 - The Role of the Large Energy Companies, partnership opportunities, existing infrastructure, and more from a top 10 Oil & Gas analyst, RBC's Biraj Borkhataria Episode 4 - Role of New Technologies - with Raffi Garbedin, Co-founder of Electric Hydrogen (formerly CTO of First Solar)  Episode 5 - Decarbonizing Hard-to-abate Sectors Like Steel with Joachim Von Sheele, Global Director of Commercialization at the world's largest industrial gas company, Linde, who is also building the world's largest Electrolyzer.

If you've been around the solar industry for long, you might recognize the name, Raffi Garabedian. If you don't, however, it's probably because you haven't studied the rise of one of the largest solar manufacturing brands in the world, First Solar, or perhaps you didn't sell against First Solar for years like Nico did in his past life! Raffi was the Chief Technology Officer at First Solar for the better part of the last decade, and recently retired to pursue “other interests”.  When he came out if stealth this year, we were surprised, and pleased, that it was in pursuit of another cutting edge technology scale-up endeavor - productizing an electrolyzer stack that can scale effectively for developers as many, like Intersect Power, scour the market for a partner to help convert those clean green electrons from massive solar and wind parks into Green Hydrogen.  Founded by experienced renewable energy technologists, Electric Hydrogen aims to cost-effectively decarbonize the massive industrial sectors that we all rely on. Raffi and team are thinking big and with urgency to decarbonize the physical world, and in today's part four of our Green Hydrogen series, he speaks to exactly where the market is going and what technological limitations have thus far limited scale thus far. If you're new to the Hydrogen discussion, you'll also appreciate Raffi's solar-specific perspective, detailed insight into the role of solar project developers, and critical thought around the barriers to scale presently for Green Hydrogen technology. It gets technical, but it's eye-opening, and it's a ton of value packed into an hour - fair warning, you may need to listen twice!   As in the last 3 episodes, Intersect Power's CEO, Sheldon Kimber, joins me for a “takeaways” session at the end of the episode so you can hear from a major clean infrastructure developer (Intersect has raised >$2.5B in financing) on where all this fits in a real-world application.
