April 24th marks the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. I grew up in the 1950s in New York in the shadow of that tragedy. I was surrounded by survivors named Garabedian, Giragosian, Hagopian and others who always spoke fondly of “yergeer,” the country they were forced to abandon. My mother, Araxie, was from Dubneh, a village near Diyarbakir, and my father, Bedros, was from Nbishi, a village near Palu in what is now Eastern Turkey. Their memories, and those of others from the “old” country, filled my ears as did their tales of how they escaped death and got to America. I'd listened to their stories in Armenian, not understanding everything, but knowing for them, “yergeer” was a special place. It was home. Houshamadyan are precious memory books of a millennial-old civilization virtually lost but not forgotten. Recorded at the National Association of Armenian Studies and Research (NAASR).

This week on BBD podcast, our guest is Jirair Garabedian (instagram) - an awesome Vancouver comedian, animator and one of my favorite people. The title isn't fully clickbait! We talk about the time Jirair lived in Armenia where he met his wife and once bumped into Kanye. Also, go over the fact that Jirair prefers how his brain works without ADHD medication mainly for when he is being creative. And the long lasting effects of growing up with immigrant parents. It's a good listen! (drop a comment if you check it out!) Be sure to rate Best Before Date 5-stars on Apple Podcasts. On today's episode of Everything About Hydrogen, we speak with Raffi Garabedian, CEO and Co-Founder of Electric Hydrogen (EH2), a deep decarbonization company pioneering new technology for low cost, high efficiency, fossil free hydrogen systems. By using electrolyzers many times larger than the industry standard, EH2 aims to help eliminate more than 30% of global GHG emissions from difficult to electrify sectors like steel, ammonia, and freight.Raffi was previously the CTO of First Solar, the pioneering thin-film solar company, and before joining First Solar in 2008, he was founder and CEO of Touchdown Technologies. He has a long history of innovation and entrepreneurship in "hard-tech" ranging from automotive components to telecommunications subsystems. He holds over 20 issued patents and has learned a lot over the years about strategy, business development, product, manufacturing operations, leadership, and most importantly, building great teams. The EH2 leadership has revolutionized other clean energy sectors at Tesla and First Solar and they are backed by world-class climate tech investors like Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Prelude Ventures, Capricorn Investment Group, Energy Impact Partners, Fifth Wall Climate Tech, and S2G Ventures. The company also has partnerships with strategic investors that are leaders in their target sectors, including the Amazon Decarbonization Fund, Cosan, Equinor Ventures, Honeywell, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and Rio Tinto. We are excited to learn more from Raffi about the EH2 technology, lessons learned by scaling First Solar, and what we might expect to see next. ----LinksCompany Website: www.eh2.com EH2 Fundraising Press Release: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20220622005258/en/Electric-Hydrogen-Secures-198M-in-Financing-to-Decarbonize-Global-Industries-With-Fossil-Free-HydrogenElectric Hydrogen on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/electric-h2/Reach Raffi on LinkedIn: http://linkedin.com/in/raffigarabedian
Volts subscribers are likely well aware of the fact that a fully decarbonized energy system is going to require an enormous amount of hydrogen to fill in the gaps left by wind and solar. What's more, they are probably aware that hydrogen comes in a dazzling variety of colors, from blue to gray to brown, depending on the carbon intensity of the production. In the end, though, only one such color matters: green. That is to say, a fully decarbonized energy system is going to require lots and lots of hydrogen made with renewable energy, with no carbon emissions. The way to do that is to run water and electrical current through an electrolyzer, which splits the hydrogen off from the oxygen.Currently, about 95 percent of the world's hydrogen is made using fossil fuels. Green hydrogen — hydrogen made with renewable energy and electrolyzers — comprises only a sliver of the remaining 5 percent. Yet it's going to have to scale up to 100 percent in the next several decades, even as demand for hydrogen rises. This is all a familiar story, at least to energy nerds. But if you're anything like me, the more you think about it, the more you realize that, despite the key role they play in that story, you don't actually know very much about electrolyzers themselves. What are they, exactly? What do they look like? How can they be improved? What policy is supporting them?To talk through these questions, I contacted Raffi Garabedian, the CEO of Electric Hydrogen, a startup that has set out to rapidly drive down the cost of green hydrogen. Garabedian, who was previously chief technology officer at First Solar, believes that the market for green hydrogen today is roughly where the solar market was in 2008, with all the attendant risks and opportunities.Garabedian (quite patiently) walked me through the basics of electrolyzers, the current state of the market and the technology, the kind of cost improvements he believes are possible within the next five years, the increasingly supportive policy environment, and the future of green hydrogen. Large swaths of the global economy are very hard to decarbonize with renewables and batteries alone. Steel, cement, aviation – these industries are run on the high heat and explosive force of burning fossil fuels. Together, these activities make up the industrial basement of society; the often overlooked and essential sectors of the economy that can only be made possible, in part, by burning liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons.Cleaning up these sectors requires an energy-dense alternative that can go the distance. And that's exactly what today's guest, Electric Hydrogen CEO and co-founder Raffi Garabedian, is building.Raffi and the team at Electric Hydrogen are building the electrolyzers and supporting infrastructure that can produce the clean, green hydrogen needed to fuel our net-zero future.Hydrogen has the potential to replace the role of petrochemicals altogether. Burning hydrogen could generate the high temperatures that heavy industry requires – without any added carbon emissions. And it could also be used for synthetic fuels in aviation or shipping. But in order to do so, hydrogen production has to clean up its act.And that's what Raffi and Electric Hydrogen are doing by building massive electrolyzers – tractor trailer-sized machines that run electricity through water, splitting it into its basic elements: oxygen and hydrogen.Commercial electrolyzers today are typically 5-10 megawatts. But Electric Hydrogen is aiming for 100 megawatts to drive down costs. By building larger and more efficient electrolyzers with much higher energy inputs, the company aims to produce greater amounts of hydrogen at a price that would make it competitive with natural gas.Emily spoke to Raffi about what it takes to move fast and break bonds in their journey to get green hydrogen down to fossil fuel price parity. They also talked about the balance between being a technologist and entrepreneur, and the infrastructure and innovation we'll need for widespread green hydrogen use in tough to decarbonize industries.Powerhouse is an innovation firm that works with leading global corporations to help them find, partner with, invest in, and acquire the most innovative startups in clean energy, mobility, and climate. On Christmas Eve 1973, The Garabedian family experienced a miracle-- What that miracle actually WAS remains a secret to their family, but every Christmas season since then they've decorated their home in the Bronx with one of the most curious and strange displays of holiday spirit in all of New York. Brian and Eric hop in the car to see it for themselves, hoping to rekindle some of their own missing fire for Christmas.
I first met professional cellist Dr Claire Garabedian at a wonderful musical evening where three internationally renowned opera singers performed a piece written for audiences of older people and those with dementia. She spoke then of the powerful communication – the dialogue, conversation, connection – between the performers and audience members. It seems to me that throughout her extraordinary life Dr Garabedian, who was born and raised in America, has been connecting and inspiring people through music.Dr Garabedian has played with modern and Baroque orchestras in the USA, Japan and the UK, and chamber music with many of the world's greatest musicians. She's also played her cello in the most intimate of settings, at the bedside of individuals who are dying. It was while doing the latter that she experienced at first-hand what she describes as the “raw, intense realness of death and dying – and a purpose for playing music that is entirely separate from performing”. Fired up by this, she enrolled in an American course using music as a transitional healing force and qualified as a Certified Music Practitioner, enabling her to play her cello at the bedside of people in palliative care. Relocating to Scotland in 2007, she completed an enhanced palliative care course at the University of Stirling which led her ultimately to studying for a PhD in Sociology, exploring the effects of playing familiar music on a solo cello on the relationship between two listeners: a care home resident with dementia in palliative care and someone closely connected to them. Dr Garabedian then became a Researcher of creative arts and dementia at the University of Worcester. She now combines her quite brilliant talents, experience and knowledge to provide services for all sorts of people, from those with health conditions including dementia to their families and carers, to those who are nearing the end of life, to students and, really – as far as I can make out – anyone interested in exploring the use of music to support and connect us all. Nearly two decades after the Boston Globe's watershed "Spotlight" investigation blew the lid on sexual abuse inside the Catholic Church, one of the key lawyers who brought that scandal to public light has not relented on his clergy accountability crusade.Attorney Mitchell Garabedian, who was depicted in a film about the "Spotlight" series, discussed the ongoing legal battles, his Hollywood treatment and his continuing fight for disclosure on the Law&Crime podcast "Objections: With Adam Klasfeld.""The investigation had a tremendous impact and helping notify the public that they have to protect children, where those children and adults are in a caring custody of priests," Garabedian said in the interview, referring to the Globe expose. "And it had great impact in helping clergy sexual abuse victims or survivors try to heal and come forward and report the abuse.""With a clergy sexual abuse survivor or victim, it's all about validation," Garabedian added. "The survivor of victim has to know that the abuse was not their fault."In early 2002, the Globe published its Pulitzer-winning series "Spotlight Investigation: Abuse in the Catholic Church," sparking multiple criminal prosecutions and international attention. It also made the already tenacious Garabedian even busier, inspiring other people who said they are survivors to seek legal counsel.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

A Sound History: Lawrence Gellert, Black Musical Protest, and White Denial traces the rise and fall of Lawrence Gellert, a little-known left-wing independent music collector as it explores changing perceptions of African American musical resistance in the twentieth century. At a time of institutionalized suppression, he worked to introduce white audiences to a tradition of black musical protest that had been denied and overlooked by prior white collectors. Steve's book digs into Gellert’s life, his work collecting songs in the Jim Crow South, and the controversy surrounding both. Steven Garabedian is an associate professor of history and intern coordinator of history / public history / American studies for Marist. He holds a PhD in American Studies from the University of Minnesota and is a historian of the twentieth century of the United States with a specialization in race, music, and radicalism.

on this episode of read receipt, we sit down with jenny drew garabedian -- the budding/brilliant brand builder behind all the babies. launched in 2019, all the babies is a new kind of infant apparel brand -- that jenny had the idea for at just 18. she teamed up with her mom after her time at usc, and created the company based on a simple, sustainable standard for all babies. aside from their organic product line, the brand lets parents send back the clothes after their little ones outgrow them recycling the fabric back into clothes for a baby in need (talk about giving back). these days, the brand is growing rapidly. bumping up production and dropping new clothes with the same simple style, jenny catches up with us on the show to talk about what it's like to build her brand -- mother-daughter style.

This is episode #336, and my guess today is Matt Garabedian. Matt is a Fresno California based real estate investor that is crushing it right now. Matt played baseball in college for one of the top college programs in the country, and uses analogies between baseball and real estate investing that create powerful lessons. I was excited to have this discussion, as I use baseball analogies often for real estate investing as well, though I did not ever play professional sports! If you're looking to take your business to the next level, or even get started as an investor, you're going to love today’s show. Please help me welcome Matt to the show.
