Dr Eric Feigl-Ding was one of the first public health scientists to raise the alarm as COVID-19 took hold.  Often several steps ahead of the policy-makers, Feigl-Ding shares with us his view that Long Covid looks to be an immuno-compromised state, not dissimilar to that caused by HIV.  Could this explain other current outbreaks - summer flu, monkeypox, Hepatitis?   He believes so.  In this wide-ranging interview we take a look at the world's response to the pandemic and how we are going to need to wake up to the slow-burn that is Long Covid.

Eric Feigl jumps on the podcast with CJ Gotcher to discuss his evolution as a coach. Unlike many of the other coaches, Eric has been a long-time coach and personal trainer and even has his own podcast, the Fitness Candor podcast. His story is more one of adapting and evolving and improving his own coaching practice and business. Learn more here: https://ericfeigl.com  Eric loves the IMPACT coaching makes on someone’s everyday life. Ultimately every job HELPS people somehow, even accounting. Coaching however can really alter the quality of someone’s life and how each moment feels, reducing pain, and increasing abilities. He was attracted to coaching because of this.  One of the things CJ & Eric discuss is how in learning deeply about something you ultimately have to believe in that thing. For Eric, is what Arthur Jones intensity training. For CJ, it was CrossFit. Though neither believes deeply in these, they’ve learned the benefits and downsides despite beginning as devotees of these respective training methods.  While Eric pursued a degree, he feels that most of what he learned does not help him be a better coach. You ultimately have to pursue those things that give you the tools to improve your coaching, and the Barbell Academy definitely provides many of those tools.  When Eric found simple, hard, effective barbell training, he already had to have clients. This occurred during the lockdown, so when clients returned he had changed his training philosophy quite a bit. He introduced barbells. Some people were all in, some needed a more compromised solution, but ultimately using barbells was better than what they had been doing. Some clients needed to leave and go elsewhere, but Eric believed more in his new approach and it did not hurt his business.  GET STARTED with one-on-one online coaching FOR FREE! Eric Feigl-Ding is the leading voice in the United States on the COVID-19 epidemic and was the first epidemiologist to publicly sound the alarm on the dangers of the virus. He was painted as an alarmist but was ultimately proven right. In this episode, Feigl-Ding and Scott Melker discuss the early warning signs of the pandemic, why COVID-19 is the "perfect storm," how testing is the biggest problem, including 50% false negatives, the importance of contact tracing, the possibility of reinfection, how the porn industry could accidentally be showing the way on testing, the difficulties of shutting down the United States, the complicity of the US government in the epidemic and more. So today is a special day, because we have Dr. Eric Feigl-Ding (Eric Ding) in the metaphorical house! He’s an epidemiologist known to many for sounding the alarm on coronavirus, but he’s a lot more than that. He’s a health economist at the Harvard Chan School of Public Health, and a Senior Fellow at the Federation of American Scientists in Washington DC. His work focuses on the intersection of public health and public policy. He also currently works on behavioral interventions for prevention, Medicare cost and quality improvements, drug safety, evidence guideline improvements for nutrition, diabetes/obesity prevention, and public health programs in the US. He was also noted in his role as a whistleblower and leader of a key two-year-long investigation into the controversial drug safety and risk data of Vioxx®, Celebrex®, and Bextra® that drew FDA and national attention. He was also recognized for his role in the New York Times, and in the book Poison Pills: The Untold Story of the Vioxx Drug Scandal. On this episode, we discuss:Whether or not it's worth it to rely on imperfect data in the face of a crisisThe cost/benefit analysis of keeping the US shut down, and whether or not all of this economic carnage is worth itIf other health issues will be forgotten, with COVID-19 eating up all the oxygen in the roomHow it feels to be right about something so destructiveAs always, we welcome your feedback. Just a quick one to share my favorite and most used fitness and health apps. If you're like me and enjoy tracking different areas of your fitness and health then this episode is for you. These apps I use either daily, weekly, and occasionally hourly. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's necessary (or healthy) to track like crazy then take those results as gospel. Instead treat the results as a marker to improve on areas the best you can knowing that there is always give and take depending on your goals. I go into more detail about what I like and dislike in a couple of the apps.     Activity Apple Health is a built in iOS application and is not available on the app store. Host Tom Shaughnessy sat down to speak on short notice with Eric Feigl-Ding, PhD, an epidemiologist, health economist, and nutrition scientist at the Harvard Chan School of Public Health to discuss the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Eric has been an extremely informative source on the Coronavirus, and we discussed all aspects of the virus from what it is, to transmission rates, to outlook and vaccines and some potential outcomes. I really appreciate Eric taking the time on such short notice to sit down and discuss the virus.  Eric's experience speaks for itself; he was noted for his role as a whistleblower and leader of a key two-year-long investigation into the controversial drug safety and risk data of Vioxx®, Celebrex®, and Bextra® that drew FDA and national attention. He has published in leading journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, The Lancet, and Health Policy. His 150+ publications have received 62,000 citations (H-Index 72). As a Web of Science Highly Cited Researcher, He was ranked in 2018 as among the Top 1% of all scientists worldwide. Given the urgency of this episode, I am releasing this outside of our normal programming.  Resources: Eric's Twitter Eric's BIO  Support The Show ZenLedger is the official tax software of Chain Reaction for crypto investors and accountants.
