Eunji "threatens" excellence on her family
Eunji's patience is tested on vacation
We feel braver and a little bit wiser after our glorious chat with the absolute king that is Brad Riew. We're so grateful Brad made the time to chat with us this week even though he wasn't feeling the best and know his heartfelt words will touch many. We can't wait for you all to tune in, but first, more about Brad:Brad Riew is an MFA candidate in Fiction at New York University's creative writing program. He graduated from Harvard College in 2018 with a degree in Psychology, where he won the Ecker Short Story Prize. The Last Tiger, co-written with his younger sister Julia Riew, is his first novel. Brad lives in Brooklyn, New York.About THE LAST TIGER:Inspired by true stories from the authors' grandparents' lives during one of the darkest periods in Korean history,The Last Tiger is a debut young adult fantasy novel about the power of love to give voice to a silenced people. In a colonized land where tigers are being hunted to extinction and ancient magic stirs, two star-crossed teens from opposite worlds—Lee Seung, a servant yearning for freedom, and Choi Eunji, a noble girl defying tradition—join forces to try and reshape their respective fates. But their relationship evolves from begrudging accomplices to bitter adversaries as they soon find themselves on opposite sides of a battle over the last tiger, a symbol of their people's lost freedom and key to the liberation of their country. As the ties between Seung and Eunji are complicated by their conflicting loyalties, tensions rise—especially when a charming princeling of the empire begins to rival for Eunji's affection. In this friends-to-enemies-to-lovers story of forbidden romance, antagonists turned allies, oppression and liberation, neither Seung nor Eunji can abandon their mission—or each other. And as they embark on separate quests to find the elusive creature, each must also find the power within themselves to make their own destiny.
Eunji faces her biggest nemesis to date
In an age of growing wealth disparities, politicians on both sides of the aisle are sounding the alarm about the fading American Dream. Yet despite all evidence to the contrary, many still view the United States as the land of opportunity. The American Mirage: How Reality TV Upholds the Myth of Meritocracy (Princeton University Press, 2025) addresses this puzzle by exposing the stark reality of today's media landscape, revealing how popular entertainment media shapes politics and public opinion in an increasingly news-avoiding nation.Drawing on an eclectic array of original data, Dr. Eunji Kim demonstrates how, amid a dazzling array of media choices, many Americans simply are not consuming the news. Instead, millions flock to entertainment programs that showcase real-life success stories, such as American Idol, Shark Tank, and MasterChef. Dr. Kim examines how shows like these leave viewers confoundingly optimistic about the prospects of upward mobility, promoting a false narrative of rugged individualism and meritocracy that contradicts what is being reported in the news.By taking seriously what people casually watch every day, The American Mirage shows how rags-to-riches programs perpetuate the myth of the American Dream, glorifying the economic winners, fostering tolerance for income inequality, and dampening support for redistributive policies that could improve people's lives. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Eunji's back from KOREA and got tales to tell!
The construct of time and other realities of life are kicking our butts and we didn't make enough episodes in March. Shannon feels terrible so listen to her whine and then make a recommendation that ties so incredibly loosely to the episode ahead. When she's done yapping, there's a whole patreon episode from Halloween 2023 where Shannon parodied her favorite podcast and recapped the 2019 Korean horror film '0.0 MHz'! Which stars Eunji from APink and Sungyeol from INFINITE, so it's like, definitely Kpop related enough. Sorry sorry sorry.Korea.net article 'Passion for K-pop drives American podcasters to share genre's evolution' by Ayushi Kharayat Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
