In this solo episode of Sexual Assault Survivor Stories (The SASS Podcast), host Dave Markel takes the mic alone to deliver a powerful, reflective, and informative monologue. While there's no guest again this week, the episode is anything but empty. Instead, it offers a thoughtful exploration of recent survivor stories making headlines, along with an in-depth look at survivor-led advocacy, cultural change, and resources for healing. Dave begins by spotlighting three courageous individuals: Alex Cooper, host of Call Her Daddy, who recently spoke out about the harassment she endured as a Division I athlete at Boston University; Tina Johnson, a Roy Moore accuser whose home was destroyed under suspicious circumstances after she came forward; and Nicky Campbell, a UK broadcaster whose disclosure of childhood abuse sparked a wave of similar testimonies from others silenced for decades. Each of these stories reveals the complex layers of trauma—ranging from institutional betrayal to physical triggers—and illustrates how public disclosures can ignite change and connection. The episode also honors the work of prominent survivor-advocates like Amanda Nguyen, founder of , who authored the Sexual Assault Survivors' Rights Act (passed unanimously by Congress in 2016). Nguyen's legislation has inspired over 67 similar laws across the U.S., while her global What Were You Wearing? exhibits continue to dismantle victim-blaming narratives in powerful and public ways. Also highlighted is Chanel Miller, formerly known as “Emily Doe” in the Brock Turner case, whose viral victim impact statement and bestselling memoir, Know My Name, redefined the survivor's voice in modern discourse. This episode closes by offering a collection of vital resources for survivors. If you or someone you know is in need of support, please reach out: · – 24/7 hotline: 800-656-HOPE · – Support specifically for male survivors · – Education and national hotline for harassment survivors · – Survivor-led legislative training and advocacy · Even without a traditional interview, this episode is filled with substance, reflection, and a deep commitment to the healing process. It's a powerful reminder that survivor stories don't stop when the mic does—and that advocacy can take many forms, including quiet reflection. This one is for every voice that hasn't been heard yet—and every listener who's ready to believe, support, and speak up. In the wake of the Archbishop of Canterbury's historic resignation, Nicky Campbell has been talking to people about their experiences of the Church. Su, a survivor of historic sexual abuse by a then-trainee minister, waived her automatic right to anonymity to tell her story publicly for the first time. She says before and during her abuser's trial - which concluded in an indecent assault conviction in March - the Church was "notable by its absence" in terms of support for her. "Nowhere was an offer to stand by me in court, to pray for me, to support me," she told Campbell, adding that after she contacted the safeguarding team she was asked to "call us" if she needed anything. Su also called on the Church to make it easier for abuse survivors to have a voice and be part of reviews into its processes around safeguarding.A member of the General Synod & the Archbishops' Council, who started the petition calling for Justin Welby to resign, said he'd meet Su to discuss the lack of support she got.If you've been affected by issues in this discussion, there is a range of organisations and websites that can offer you advice and support. You can find some of them listed on the BBC's Actionline website at bbc.co.uk/actionline.

TW: This episode contains references to child sexual abuse, and discussions about suicide.Gabby is joined by one of the great voices of our time; radio and television broadcaster, Nicky Campbell. They discuss Nicky's professional versatility and esteemed career; his midlife diagnosis of ADHD; his great love of animals and how his beloved dog, Maxwell, helped him through a mental breakdown; his antics on The Masked Singer and why sometimes you need to do something purely for the fun of it. Nicky also talks about the moment he realised that the sexual abuse he and his classmates had suffered when they were at school was publicly known, and he had to confront what had happened to him in his childhood. Nicky decided to use his professional platform to help others do the same, and was inundated with calls and emails from survivors; some middle aged men had never told a soul about what had happened to them prior to speaking with Nicky. He speaks about how challenging that was at times, but also how galvanising survivors to seek justice and representing them at the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry, is a great source of pride for him. They also speak to Simon Gunning - CEO of suicide prevention charity, CALM - about how talking openly about suicide as a human behaviour might actually help prevent it. You can find Nicky's podcast Different here, and the episode of The Spark which Simon refers to (featuring Rory O'Connor), here. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

TV Presenter, Radio DJ and host of the BBC's hit show, Long Lost Family, Nicky Campbell, is back to talk all things family, music and dogs. What do the Rolling Stones, finding long lost family members, elderly Labradors and West Highland Terriers have in common? Nicky Campbell of course! Nicky has had a long and distinguished career as a radio DJ, a TV presenter, and an animal lover. Along the way he has interviewed legendary bands, presented Top of the Pops, hosted his own successful radio shows, and has always been in the public eye, but it wasn't until a nervous breakdown that he truly came to understand the power of animals. Adopted at a young age, Nicky understands what it is like to discover family members again, which makes him the perfect presenter for the achingly beautiful TV series, Long Lost Family. But it is his dogs that fill him with joy and it is their power that has helped him on what has been, at times, a difficult journey.
Nicky Campbell is a British broadcaster and television presenter known for his versatile career spanning over three decades. In this Voice of the Child (VOTC) podcast, adoption activist Paul Brian Tovey talks about star footballer Dele Alli's adoption claims, his complaint to the BBC for their reporting of the story, and his conversation on X with Radio 5 journalist and adoptee Nicky Campbell, whose programme about Dele and adoption caused a stir among adult adoptees on social media. Paul also talks about “reunion p*rn”, why many adoptees dislike the rescue narrative found in adoption, and his own campaign helping adoptees abused in childhood to heal. Speaking to VOTC, Paul said, “My worry about the media is that they're mirroring the self repression that has been wished upon some adoptees. The adoptees that want to speak out who've had wonderful lives they're just going to come out with it, but the ones that have a lot of pain - pain is very difficult to talk about.” “We need to get our heads together in some ways that satisfy each other, so that we can get to some more of the information about the negative sides of adoption. Everyone else in life has the human right to walk away from a relationship that hasn't been very good, and adoptees don't. There's something wrong there.”

This week's show is with Rhonda McCrimmon. Rhonda McCrimmon is a Celtic Seer and Shaman from Scotland focusing on creating shamanic pathways for those who have been disconnected from their animist lineage and heritage. Through her various free social media communities, ShamanTalk podcast, Spiritual Momentum Membership, Apprenticeship Program, online workshops, healing circles, and website, she has created a safe, clear doorway for thousands of people to reconnect with their indigenous Celtic roots & find creative shamanic ways to restore a consciously connected spiritual life. Walking a shamanic path for nearly a decade, and more recently as the Founder & CEO of The Centre for Shamanism, Rhonda has featured in The Guardian and on BBC Radio 4, Nicky Campbell's BBC Radio 5 podcast ‘Different' and BBC 1 Sunday Live discussing shamanism. She follows her calling with single-minded determination, making shamanic practices accessible for all within an ethical, loving spiritual tribe. In this conversation, Rhonda and I explored shamanism for the modern world, we focused specifically on British or Celtic shamanism, and her fascinating work with the ancient technology of the Three Cauldrons. We'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment below or share in our fb group. What you'll learn from this episode: True shamanism is based in our connection with the land we're living on, so for those of us in the UK - where we don't have the intact lineage in the same way as other places, even though we might benefit from learning from shamanic teachers and wisdom keepers from other places, ultimately nothing can replace learning directly from the spirits of the British land. The Three Cauldron power centres are found in the Head, the Heart and the Gut, and map to findings in scientific research and other methodologies. The Lower cauldron in the gut represents your sense of self and safety, when we're born it's upright and full of your lifeforce energy to sustain you through your life - it needs a loving, securely attachment to retain its power growing from childhood to adulthood. A loss of its power can happen via childhood trauma and can show up in fear, depression, and anxiety. Ways to heal it are shamanic healing, EDMR, breathwork and somatic work. The Mid Cauldron in the heart represents emotional intelligence. Issues here show up in triggers and tantrums, healing this cauldron can come via talking therapy, boundary work and shadow work. The Upper Cauldron in the Head represents wisdom, creativity and the higher self. Issues here can show up with blocks in creativity, inspiration and spirituality, working with the cauldron can come via faith, sacrifice and offerings. It is important that we begin with the Lower Cauldron work (or return to do it) as it's where the life force comes from that will sustain us through the work of the other cauldrons.
