(Jun 4, 2026) We join a birdwalk in Lake Placid, where organizers say the second annual Black Birders Week celebration is helping more people of color feel welcome in the outdoors; a foster dog in Ogdensburg is in the national Pet Lovers Choice Awards competition; and we remember North Country musician Dan Duggan, who died last week at 69 years old.

Notes from her foster family: Canella came to the shelter in pretty rough shape but look at her glow up after being treated like she should in her foster home! Canella is now ready to trade her foster life for a forever home where she can truly reign like the queen she is. This sweet girl is the perfect mix of chill and playful — she's just as happy lounging by your side as she is enjoying a little playtime. She's crate trained, house trained, and overall just an easy, wonderful companion. If you're looking for a loyal, loving, low-maintenance... Article Link
Doesn't that sound pleasant? Join host John Moe as he strolls his Saint Paul neighborhood with his dogs. There's Sally, a black lab mix and senior resident dog, Maisy, an all-over mutt and resident dog who doesn't like putting on harnesses but does like walks, and Weenie, a foster pug puppy who keeps up with the ladies but not in a straight line. On this walk... John muses on Guy Branum's description of spring, the accuracy of the Colossal Cafe's description as "colossal," the snobbiness of his dogs, and the linguistic uses of the words "kitten" and "puppy." Notes from his foster family: Dolly is a truly special girl with the sweetest soul. She is currently our longest shelter resident and we don't understand why. Even after spending a long time in the shelter (which can be tough on any dog), she has remained incredibly loving, gentle, and well-mannered. Her resilience and kind heart shine through in everything she does. About Dolly: •Great with other dogs and does wonderful with kids •Cats unknown •No signs of resource guarding •Loves people — attention is her favorite thing! •Food-motivated and eager to please •Walks well on a leash and listens...Article Link

Notes from his foster family: Austin is a 4-month-old retriever hound mix with the sweetest, most laidback personality. He was born on Sept. 12, this easygoing boy is just happy to be part of the moment — whether he's relaxing on his own or hanging out with friends. He does great with other dogs and has even been around baby goats! While he hasn't met any cats yet, his gentle nature suggests he'd likely do just fine. Austin is still learning the ropes — he's not yet kennel or house trained, but he's making progress and slowly working on leash...Article Link
Notes from his foster family: At approximately 5-6 years old he loves being around people and chasing squirrels to the level of high anxiety. He's 20 pounds of poodle mix that came to us missing his right eye which doesn't hinder or bother him a bit. He's super friendly and loves people and other dogs. He hasn't been kids tested but that can be arranged. He hasn't shown any aggression towards anyone or anything except squirrels. He is housebroken but does have accidents when left alone in a cage as he has separation anxiety. He sleeps well/quietly in his cage...Article Link
Notes from his foster family: Dunn is laid back, super sweet and gentle. He's good around kiddos, other dogs, puppies, and baby goats. He likes to give them kisses and is instinctively very gentle. We have not tested with cats but based off his demeanor, we think he would do well with them. He does well in a kennel outside. He does fine in a crate for short periods of time such as adoption events. He walks well with a leash but sometimes gets excited. Dunn loves playing in the water so we keep a little kiddy pool out for...Article Link
Notes from his foster family: Boots has a great demeanor. We actually took him to our son's class for show and tell and he did excellent with all the kids. Sat nicely, let them all pet on him, and didn't seem overwhelmed at all. He will chase after cats but has not had much interaction with them and doesn't seem aggressive. He acclimated very quickly to our busy household of other animals and plays well with all our other dogs. He will go after chickens though. Boots loves his food and needs a slow feeding bowl. Notes from her foster dad: Louise is very sweet and friendly with people and dogs, though she can sometimes be rather shy with new people or situations. She has never acted aggressively to any person or any other dog that I've seen. I suspect she might have issues if she were cooped up inside all day without any opportunity to vent her energy. Ready to meet your new best friend? Submit an application...Article Link

I've had my pet pig Kimmy for nearly 4 years. We have a German shepherd and a blue heeler. I also have 3 beautiful girls and 2 step sons. I wanted a pet pig since I was a little girl. Their cute snorts and adorable noses made me happy. I work in retail and have fostered for various rescues for the past 7 years. I enjoy being around my animals and getting them ready for their forever homes! I also am attending school for veterinary medicine, and I sell makeup on the side. I like to keep myself busy, but my most important job is a human and pet mom. Brittany shares her experience of having her first pig and what they learned from that experience to prepare them for getting Kimmy. She tells us what it was like to bring Kimmy home and how she fit into the family and then how it was to bring a puppy into the house and how Kimmy reacted to that. Being a home that fosters dogs they bring in about 20-30 dogs a year that stay with them until they get adopted. They had 1 incident when a dog got out of the crate in her room and Kimmy was in her own crate in her room. The foster dog broke into Kimmy's crate and 2 dogs ended up attacking Kimmy and hurt her ear badly. She ended up losing the ear from the damage but was fine other than that. The foster dog was then transferred to a new foster house and her dog that also was involved in the attack was rehomed as well to keep Kimmy safe. They are no longer fostering white dogs because Kimmy did not forget that it was a white dog that attacked her. Brittany is now trying to only foster small dogs or puppies to be sure to keep Kimmy safe. Brittany wants to remind us that dogs and pigs do not speak the same language and do not think the same. She wants everyone to do your research and be prepared for bringing a pig into your home so you can keep your pig safe. This might be the most important conversation I've ever had on the Believe in Dog Podcast. Have you ever wondered why there's a seemingly endless stream of homeless pets in need at shelters and rescues across the USA? As a writer, Cara Sue Achterberg began documenting her family's experiences fostering dogs for a local rescue and wrote the book Another Good Dog - One Family and 50 Foster Dogs. Cara shares with us her dog fostering wisdom learned from now more than 150+ dogs who have spent time in her home. You may also be surprised to learn that fostering dogs brought Cara's children and family closer than ever – even through their teen years! But Cara did wonder – where were all these dogs coming from? The answer was mostly the Southeastern USA. So when she embarked on a book tour she decided to also make it a shelter tour so she could see firsthand where the dogs were coming from. And this decision changed her life. Cara will share with us what she's learned from visiting 120+ animal shelters in 12 states over the past several years. We'll hear the 3 factors that lead to animal shelters successfully saving lives. And about the unsung heroes who persevere through unimaginable obstacles to give dogs a chance. Cara created the organization Who Will Let The Dogs Out to support the shelters and rescues lacking budgets, resources and often a staff. Who Will Let The Dogs Out is bringing awareness and resources to homeless dogs and the heroes who fight for them. Trigger Warning: The topic of animal euthanization is a theme of this episode. I have no idea how that happened. I put together every show and I must have hit something just before bouncing the file. Anyway, I evened out the sound and it's a MUST LISTEN. Cara is phenomenal and so is her book!Lisa is joined by Cara Sue Achterberg who talks with Lisa about her book, "Another Good Dog: Our Family and Fifty Foster Dogs." Cara shares her experience fostering fifty dogs and in this interview you will get to hear about quite a few of them. In addition Cara's book and this interview touches on mothering older children who don't need you quite as much and the challenges that comes with that. Cara Achterberg is the author of seven books, a creative writing teacher, and a shelter dog advocate. Her memoir, Another Good Dog: One Family and Fifty Foster Dogs was a People magazine ‘people's pick' and featured on the Hallmark Channel's Home & Family Show. Her book, One Hundred Dogs & Counting: One Woman, Ten Thousand Miles, and a Journey Into the Heart of Shelters and Rescues led to Cara cofound Who Will Let the Dogs Out, a nonprofit initiative to raise awareness and resources for shelter dogs. And as many times as they tried to move away from it - including another entire career where they won a Grammy, people - the call of the wild or the cuddly and cute always brings them back. Here's a hard truth: whether we do it intentionally or not, we tend to think of rescue dogs as “broken." It may not be a conscious thought. It might not be deliberate. But our behaviors often show that this belief is there inside of us. This week we're bringing back Brittnie Battle of Charlie's Angels Saving Animals (CASA), a 501c3 non-profit rescue transport organization in Tennessee, to share insight on how we can look inward and shift our mindset about rescue dogs.Jenny and Katya catch up with Brittnie and explore a wide range of topics from kennel cough to caring for sick dogs to how shelters with limited resources do it, how they go on, when they can sometimes barely meet the basic needs of the animals in care. The trio discusses if these same dogs, many who experience a reality of scarcity in their environment, can bounce back and heal from the learned desperation and possibly from learned resource guarding, and how that kind of guarding may differ from dogs with a genetic predisposition to resource guard. Still, these ladies manage to keep things lighthearted and get back to chatting about whether “ugly” dogs (and cats) exist. Spoiler alert: they do! But they insist that there's magic to ugliness and that of course it doesn't mean these animals are any less lovable. Brittnie even shows how “ugliness” can be embraced by introducing Katya and Jenny to Mandu the Warthog Dog! Finally, Brittnie, Jenny, and Katya reveal their New Year resolutions and invite their listeners to donate and help CASA Transport and Better Together Dog Rescue reach their 2023 goals.Happy new year, wonderful community of animal lovers. Jenny gets real about the sucky part of fostering and how she recently dealt with the pain of letting a foster go. But then they dive into why you should try fostering, shedding light on how fostering a dog doesn't just help animals; it's something that is actually a beautiful gift that adds love, purpose, and connection to your life, even if it doesn't turn out to be a forever fit.In this episode, Katya and Jenny also share updates about next week's live New Year's episode, next year's Animal Care Expo in New Orleans, upcoming workshops, a big grant Better Together received from Tito's Vodka for Dog People, and where to donate if you have the means for end of the year donations. If you're on the fence about fostering a dog or unsure how it can impact your life, this conversation is for you.Join The Animal That Changed You community on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook -- we're waiting to welcome you! Okay, let's take some deep breaths. Warning: today's episode will likely bring about strong feelings, but you know Katya and Jenny. They don't shy away from discussing the ins and outs of a topic pertaining to animals just because it's challenging! So, they're talking about breeding. They're talking about dogs bred for profit or on accident, about spay or neuter, about health issues and how some dogs can't even give birth naturally anymore. In this episode of The Animal That Changed You, the central question is this: if we paid attention to which dogs were being bred, if we bred for personality and health instead of breed confirmation or aesthetics, how much better off would we be when it comes to having dogs? Because otherwise, adopting a dog is no “riskier” than purchasing one. Because otherwise, it's about looks without any regard to genetic disposition, nature or nurture, and that means more money spent to get the dog doesn't buy you a guarantee. But then. Prioritizing character when it comes to breeding means not every rescue dog being spayed and neutered, means not leaving the breeding of which dogs come into this world up to chance or profit. It also means cultivating more patience with the dogs that are living now as we learn how to best help them and love them, how to reinforce good behavior and set them up to succeed, knowing we'd prefer not to create more of them. There may not be an easy solution, but Jenny and Katya bring it and they hope it gets you thinking, gets you talking, and motivates you to send them an email and get in on the convo. Because the benefits and risks of breeding versus adoption is not a one-size-fits-all discussion, and it's definitely controversial. So your feedback and thoughts are welcome here, are called for, and are already appreciated.
