As we play Scent Work, we work to develop skills for the dog, handler and team in our classes and training sessions. Especially for teams who are interested in competing, testing those skills with blind hides, time limits and other potential stressors is key. Traditionally, mock trials and Sniff N' Gos were the type of events that met this need. However, we can all agree the more creative the event, the more likely we are to participate! In this episode, we speak with Lori Timberlake of Do Over Dog Training about the types of creative events she has offered for her clients and the many benefits of these types of events. What to listen for:"I appreciate the fact that our little collaborative thing has allowed us to have some of these really, really hard conversations in a public format."Welcome to episode 100 of the K9 Detection Collaborative with the Dames of Detection themselves - Robin Greubel, Stacy Barnett, and Crystal Wing!It feels like just yesterday when our hosts first set out to create a space for sharing the wonders and challenges of canine detection. This episode peels back the curtain on the competitive spirit alive in the world of canine detection. They navigate the tightrope that separates testing from competing, and how these impact our dogs and us as handlers. Our hosts look deeper into the world of dog obedience, dispelling myths and reaffirming the power of proper training. The conversation extends beyond the agility course, touching on the essential, yet often under-appreciated emotional and financial investments we make for the love of the sport and our canine companions.Wrapping up, the Dames of Detection tackle the seldom-discussed topic of burnout and growth within the dog training community, drawing parallels with their experiences. All that said, the stress of competition is counterbalanced by the joy of breakthroughs and the camaraderie that only a group of like-hearted dog lovers can provide. Leerburg's One Odor Scent Kit This new scent kit was designed by Ed Frawley and manufactured by Leerburg. Patent Pending. All of the civilian style nose work dog sports use 4 or 5 odors. Ed specifically designed this one odor kit for several reasons: -Law enforcement searching for pedophile hard drives and thumb drive -Civilian trainers who start their training with only one odor -Civilian trainers who want to keep their 4 or 5 odors in separate scent kits Sport dog trainers can also use these kits with the goal of keeping their training aids/odors separate. Some training protocols recommend starting detection dogs on one odor. When the dog has reached fluency on that first odor the dog can then be introduced to second, third, or fourth odor. We also offer a new five scent kit of this same design. This new kit has two newly designed odor boxes. Scent items are placed in these odor boxes. These boxes have a sliding top with air vents and a magnet compartment. The magnet compartment (located on the bottom of the box) is designed so our earth magnets can be slid in and held in place by friction. Links The Foundation of Sport Detection

What to listen for:Today, Stacy, Robin, and Crystal talk all things resiliency in our dogs. They kick off the discussion with examples of lack of resiliency in detection work, including slowing down or checking out. This is often when the handler starts to over-direct, sending the dog further down a vicious cycle of learned helplessness. Our hosts agree that play is the best way to teach resiliency, because playful activity minimizes stress and anxiety, builds confidence, encourages problem-solving, and improves concentration and mental stamina. They go on to share their thoughts on different breeds' genetic disposition to resiliency and how to work around your dog's particular characteristics and personality. They also explain how to build that creative problem-solving muscle while they are still a puppy to give them a powerful foundation on which to build resiliency as they age.“We get so focused on getting to the end goal as fast as possible,” says Crystal, “that we fail to lay those foundational building blocks.” A great handler is not afraid—and in fact, knows that it's essential—to introduce failure into their training. This means making training scenarios progressively more difficult, increasing in difficulty slowly but surely, and tailoring training to the specific dog.“You can build resiliency,” agrees Robin. “You just have to take it a thin layer at a time, just like Teflon coating.”Key Topics:Examples of the opposite of resiliency in a dog (01:12)Preparing your dog so work environments seem underwhelming (05:34)Resiliency issues around problem-solving (08:15)Why to not become “wedded to the hide” (11:26)Why play is the most effective way to teach resiliency (15:48)Why confidence alone doesn't lead to resiliency (21:17)Introducing failure into your training (25:59)How resiliency and fluency go hand-in-hand (33:24)Teaching your puppy to be a creative problem-solver (38:47)The resiliency of the handler (44:22)Selecting a resilient puppy (46:16)What to take note of when looking at the breed's history (53:27)Our biggest takeaways (56:25)Resources:Training Your Teenage Detection Dog from K9Sensus (mentioned in the episode)K9 Detection Collaborative Episode 11: The D's of Detection WorkWe want to hear from you:Check out the K9 Detection Collaborative FB page and comment on the episode post!K9Sensus Foundation can be found on Facebook and Instagram. What to listen for:Today, Stacy, Robin, and Crystal sit down to discuss the biggest takeaways from their recent conversation with Tazzie Winkler, in the previous episode (#60).They discuss what it means to see scenarios from your dog's point of view in order to ensure that they get from point A to B as efficiently as you intend. With the powerful lesson that “dogs never lie” ringing in their minds, our hosts talk about the skill of tailoring your training around your dog's unique motivations, and in so doing reinforcing the right behaviors from the get-go.They talk about the difference between hyperactivity and drive, and how to work around high-arousal dogs to keep them silent and driven at the same time.Tazzie shared that empathy—understanding others—is the most important trait in a handler. Crystal expounds on this idea, bringing to mind the three elements that create genuine empathy: thoughts, actions, and feelings; as well as the three expressions empathy can take: cognitive, emotive, and empathic action. Our hosts stress the importance of manipulating an environment as much as needed (and not more than necessary) and keeping your training routine consistent, all in order to give the dog the greatest opportunity to generalize a specific behavior.Key Topics:Putting yourself in your dog's shoes (03:29)The difference between hyperactivity and drive (06:21)Letting your dog teach you (08:53)A deep dive into empathy + Empathic Dog Training (16:08)Three steps to growing your emotional intelligence (19:52)Creating a clear progression plan to minimize your dog's incorrect decisions (23:46)The importance of consistency (30:33)Motivation and reinforcement (41:09)Applying empathic action (43:58)Resources:K9 Detection Collaborative Episode 60: Talking Dogs with Tazzie Winkler Rivanna K9 ServicesUnderstanding the Premack Principle in Dog TrainingSchutzhund VillageHow dogs love us | Dr. Gregory Berns | TEDxAtlantaHOWGO Dog Rope Toy (affiliate link)We want to hear from you:Check out the K9 Detection Collaborative FB page and comment on the episode post!K9Sensus Foundation can be found on Facebook and Instagram.
