BW CEO Bob Chapman met Dr. Anita Sanchez a few years ago through a mutual friend, William Ury. Since then, Anita and her husband, Kit Tennis, have become great supporters of what we're trying to do at Barry-Wehmiller, spreading the message about the power of Truly Human Leadership. As is described on her website, Anita's book, The Four Sacred Gifts: Indigenous Wisdom for Modern Times,  is a guide "in living as whole, joyful human beings in our modern lives. Through a series of breath-taking, up-lifting stories drawn from experiences of leaders in business and communities around the world as well as from her own amazing journey, the author inspires us to discover and trust our gifts showing us how to become the life-giving connection to all: People, Spirit and the Earth." The principles Anita writes about and their connection to her heritage align closely to the similarities Bob has identified between leadership and parenting. When we lead others, when it comes to building teams, having a connection – like a family – is so important. Sometimes, as leaders, we need to reconnect with the idea of what a family is to be able to connect with others. Anita's book is filled with the wisdom to try to do that in order to move toward a world where people feel like they matter.

Whatever will be of service to your community the words Anita Sanchez Ph.D. first shared when asked what she would like to speak with me and my listeners about. Words that I quickly learned she not only speaks but lives by. Being a longtime student of ancient wisdom, having the opportunity to share in conversation with Anita was a genuine gift. Imagine C-Suites from Fortune 500 companies bringing in an elder of sacred wisdom to teach and inspire them. Then imagine getting to sit 1:1 in conversation with that very woman. With her gentle strength and clarity, Anita spoke to some of the most important aspects of life, that in our busy world and lives we often take for granted or forget, altogether. The way she speaks directly and with the intention to the listener, bringing them into the conversation is an opportunity to breathe into yourself in a whole new way of remembering more of yourself. Today's episode is a dynamic conversation with Anita Sanchez, Ph.D., Dr. Elizabeth Lindsey, and Tim Harjo about Indigenous Wisdom. Our guests initially came together as a panel to speak about the Hoffman Process during our first-ever virtual Hoffman Conference in April 2021. Their panel discussion titled, Indigenous Voices: Answering the Call to Mend Our World, offered profound wisdom for all of us to heed in these times. Each has been a solo guest on our podcast (links below). Now, we've invited them back to share this wisdom with you. A beautiful part of this conversation is how the Hoffman Process overlaps with Native culture. All three of our guests find the Process to be aligned, and even the same, as elements of their culture. What they share is truly beautiful about what it means to do the inner work in order to realize who we really are. Tim, Elizabeth, and Anita share these core beliefs:  separation is an illusion, we are never alone, we must remember who we are, and our modern lives are in need of indigenous wisdom. As Anita suggests, we invite you to "listen with soft ears and expanded heart." More About Our Guests Tim Harjo Timothy Harjo Tim is a member of the Fort Sill Apache Tribe. As a child, he was a student at an Indian Boarding school, as were other members of his family. Look around you. Look at your community, your town, your city, state, and country. Look at the world itself. Look at our media, our politics, our businesses, our culture. We often feel as if we must cut off certain parts of ourselves depending on the circumstances, especially when it comes to the way we show up at work. But Dr. Anita Sanchez contends that this separation and misalignment is what causes suffering, and if we want to do our best work, we need to tap into the four sacred gifts and maintain our wholeness—the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of ourselves. Dr. Sanchez has spent four decades sharing indigenous wisdom with executives and their teams all over the world. She draws on the teachings of her Aztec and Mexican-American heritage as well as the latest science to inspire and equip leaders to enjoy meaningful, empowered lives and careers. Dr. Sanchez serves as a transformational leadership consultant, speaker and coach, and she is the author of the bestseller The Four Sacred Gifts: Indigenous Wisdom for Modern Times. Today, Dr. Sanchez explains the concept of transformational leadership, discussing the way that true transformational leaders inspire their teams rather than trying to manage them. She walks us through the four sacred gifts: the power to forgive the unforgiveable, the power of unity, the power to heal, and the power of hope in action. Listen in for Dr. Sanchez's insight around applying indigenous wisdom to business in a way that allows people to keep their wholeness, develop supportive relationships, and leverage hope as an energy source.   Key Interview Takeaways People don't need to be managed, they need to be inspired. True transformational leaders serve in aligning the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical aspects of every employee. Harness the power to forgive the unforgiveable. Rather than hanging on to hurt or mistreatment and being imprisoned by it, we must use our energy for what we want to create in the world. Connection makes everything possible. We need to see past the illusion of separation that is causing the current division and divisiveness in the world and move into positive action. As Dr. Sanchez puts it, ‘The GPS doesn't work if you're standing still.' We can't give what we don't have. For true healing to occur, we must first adopt an unconditional love of self. Hope is an energy source—and a choice. We can draw on the magic of hope if we sit still and allow the unimaginable to arise, and no one can take that away from us.
