This latest episode of the Courage My Friends podcast series features "The Radical Labour of Care" panel discussion with: Indigenous midwife, leader, and educator, Claire Dion Fletcher; crisis outreach worker, case manager, and advocate in Toronto's Downtown East, Lorraine Lam; and program director of the Latinx Womyn's Program at the Toronto Rape Crisis Centre/Multicultural Women Against Rape, Grissel Orellana. It is moderated by Eliza Chandler, associate professor in the School of Disability Studies and executive director of the Office of Social Innovation at Toronto Metropolitan University. This latest session of TMU's Transformation Café series was hosted at the 34th annual Labour Fair at George Brown Polytechnic. Under this year's Labour Fair theme, "Building a Working Peoples' City," the panel discussed the essential, but undervalued labour of care, interventions in the increasingly inaccessible, unaffordable and hostile city and building practices of mutual aid, community safety and collective survival toward caring and liveable cities. Fletcher explains: "My work is very grounded in an Indigenous feminist perspective, and that self-determination of our nations cannot be fully realized unless all members of our nations are included. And that means we must address the gendered nature of colonization. And that sovereignty of our nations cannot happen without sovereignty of our bodies. And so this has led me to a deep commitment to reproductive justice" According to Lam: "The root of care for me is really about compassion. And the original Latin meaning of the word compassion comes from two different words ... "to suffer" and "with." And so for me, the radical root of care … is really about compassion, which is different from pity. 'Cause you can walk by someone and have pity on them. You can have sympathy for them. You might even get empathy for them. But the goal is really about: what does it mean to suffer with? And I think that's what pushes us towards thinking about solidarity." Orellana says: "The frontline work as labour, it's so devalued. When we're doing so much caring, so much support, so much healing going on, so much advocacy … And I find it difficult … I mean, I've been working in the field for a long time. But more Latin American people are coming in. And every time I sit down with a person it is like when I came here 38 years ago, it's the story over and over again … But we are all needed, needed, needed. We're all important and beautiful." About today's guests: Eliza Chandler (she/her) is an associate professor in the School of Disability Studies and executive director of the Office of Social Innovation at Toronto Metropolitan University whose work is grounded in disability arts. As a scholar, curator, and organizer, she explores how disability arts reshape cultural spaces through critical access, disability justice, and disability-led creative practice. Chandler's work highlights disability arts as a vital site of political, aesthetic, and world-making knowledge. Claire Dion Fletcher (she/her) is a Lenape- Potawatomi and mixed settler registered midwife. Fletcher is current vice-president of the Canadian Association of Midwives and past co-chair of the National Council of Indigenous Midwives. She is an assistant professor at the Toronto Metropolitan University Midwifery Education Program. Her teaching focuses on Indigenous midwifery and social justice issues. Fletcher is deeply committed to increasing diversity in the midwifery profession through Indigenous-led education. Lorraine Lam (she/her) is a Chinese-Canadian daughter of a solo parent, with an education in music, sociology and social work. For over a decade, she has worked in Toronto's Downtown East, walking alongside community members navigating homelessness, drug use, incarceration, poverty, racism, and systemic injustice. Her work is shaped by these communities that have taught her to centre harm reduction, anti-oppression, and trauma-informed practices. She is currently a caseworker at Amadeusz, supporting individuals with firearms-related charges, and she serves on the board of Building Roots and organizes with Christians for a Free Palestine: Toronto and Shelter & Housing Justice Network. Lam also co-authored a chapter in Displacement City (University of Toronto Press, 2022) Find her at www.lorrainelam.me, IG: @lorrainelamchops, X: @lorrainelamchop, Bluesky: @lorrainelamchops.bsky.social and Tiktok: @lorrainelamchops. Grissel is a feminist, a human rights activist/defender, a lesbian femme, a mother, a healer, and a survivor of war and gender-based violence. Orellana has worked at the Toronto Rape Crisis Centre/Multicultural Women Against Rape for 26 years. She is currently a program director of the Latinx Womyn Program at the Centre, where she continues to triumph for a diversity of Latin American survivors. This program is a space for support, personal growth, collective development and dialogue about our role as Latinx immigrants, political refugees, and survivors of multiple abuse and human rights violations, here in Toronto, Canada. In her work at the Toronto Rape Crisis Centre/Multicultural Women Against Rape, Orellana is part of a collective that advocates for liberation from all forms of violence. Participan Gabi (CKUD, Bloque), Luis (Bloque, Mestiza), Mariona (Hysteria) y Piti (Darkside of Soul, Standstill, It's not not); y pinchamos y comentamos temas de Speedway, Combust, Remission, Supernova, Worth It, Unbroken, Boneflower, Odd Man Out, Entry, Brave Out y Machete Law.

What do you do when wholesale feels like success but starts killing your brand? For the founders of Mestiza, it meant rewriting the playbook. In this episode, they share how they survived COVID, pivoted to DTC, and built a multi 7-figure fashion business - while raising kids and refusing VC money.Jim is joined by Luisa Takas and Alessandra Perez-Rubio, the powerhouse duo behind Mestiza - a New York-based fashion brand worn by celebrities and loved by loyal customers. The two dive into how they broke into Neiman Marcus early on but quickly realized wholesale wasn't sustainable. From there, they detail how COVID forced a DTC pivot, how their hero product (“The Shimmy Dress”) became a game-changer, and how they've grown profitably while bootstrapping. This is a behind-the-scenes look at resilience, customer obsession, and building a brand with values. In this episode, I sit down with the extraordinary Tricia Eastman, a traditional Mestiza medicine practitioner, Bwiti initiate, and author of Seeding Consciousness. With over a decade of experience working with plant medicines like ibogaine and 5-MeO-DMT, Tricia brings rare insight into the intersection of ancestral wisdom and modern psychedelic healing. We dive deep into the significance of indigenous-led biocultural preservation, how plant medicine can reconnect us with our spiritual roots, and what it really means to walk a path of initiation. Tricia shares her powerful story of healing from an eating disorder, and how her own encounters with sacred medicines led her to a life of global service—from facilitating retreats with special operations veterans to founding the nonprofit Ancestral Heart.Whether you're curious about iboga, exploring sacred sexuality, or seeking deeper purpose, Tricia brings the kind of grounded wisdom and integrity this space desperately needs.DISCLAIMER: This podcast is for educational purposes only and not intended for diagnosing or treating illnesses. 1193. Artist. Poet. Friend. This week, we celebrate the music, life, and legacy of Leonard Cohen with someone who knew him well - Perla Batalla. Grammy-nominated Singer/songwriter Perla Batalla first came to prominence as a backing singer for Leonard Cohen during his 1988 I'm Your Man tour and on the 1992 album The Future, in the process forging a deep friendship. With Cohen's encouragement, Perla stepped out as an artist in her own right, releasing a beautifully diverse range of magnificent albums such as Mestiza and Discoteca Batalla, performing at the world's best venues, co-writing and appearing in two one-woman shows, honored by UN and Focus on the Masters. But she has always kept the words and works of Leonard Cohen close to her heart. Her latest album, A Letter to Leonard Cohen: Tribute to a Friend, is her second album of her unique interpretations of Cohen's music, following 2005's Bird on the Wire. It was released the day before what would have been his 90th birthday. Leonard Norman Cohen was born in Quebec on September 21, 1934. Spending the latter part of the ‘50s and first half of the ‘60s as a published poet and author, he shifted his focus to songwriting. From 1967 to 1971, he established himself as a major musical talent with the trilogy of classic albums Songs of Leonard Cohen, Songs from a Room, and Songs of Love and Hate, as well as interpretations by the likes of Judy Collins, Nina Simone, Joe Cocker, and Roberta Flack. He would continue to record and tour sporadically throughout the ‘70s and early ‘80s to widespread acclaim and with some commercial success in Europe. In the late ‘80s & early ‘90s, Cohen gained a new underground audience through his two synth-driven productions, I'm Your Man and The Future, prominent soundtrack placements, a beloved album of interpretations by Jennifer Warnes, Famous Blue Raincoat, and the 1991 high profile tribute album, I'm Your Fan, where a who's who of alternative music disciples like REM, Ian McCulloch, Pixies, James, The House of Love, Robert Forster, Nick Cave, and John Cale paid their respects to the man. The latter artist, John Cale, performed a breathtaking piano version of a song from 1984's Various Positions called “Hallelujah,” in an arrangement that would be borrowed and transcribed to guitar by Jeff Buckley a few years later, which further elevated Leonard Cohen's already mythical status. After spending the latter half of the ‘90s in a monastery as an ordained Buddhist monk, Leonard Cohen returned in the twenty first century to finish what he started, adding six additional studio albums to his catalogue, including the album released weeks before his November 7, 2016 death, You Want It Darker, and the posthumous followup completed by his son Adam, 2019's Thanks For The Dance, as well as multiple live albums, both archival and contemporary. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Send us a textFeeling like you've hit a plateau? Stuck in old ways, old habits that no longer seem to be helping you, but rather hindering you? This episode was inspired by people telling me this is what they're facing and experiencing right now. We all get to these cross roads from time to time, but there's more to consider than meets the eye. Let's chat about some reasons to consider why what has always worked - stops working. Here for you! Send us a textAre you curious about the origins of the Equinox? Who and where are the earliest records of Equinox being spoken about and documented in history? What are the traditions, meanings and ceremonies being practiced around these times of year? What's the significance in the southern hemisphere versus the northern hemisphere? It's fascinating to see what practices we gravitate to naturally. It's innately inexplainable how freely we are drawn to certain activities according to the astrological actions taking place that we can't see.Dive in a little....or A LOT, with me on all things Equinox. And I hope you enjoy learning more about it's rich history as I did. With love, Ria Mestiza

When I think of a light hearted example of persistence, I think of kids. They get fixated on "a want" and they'll ask a parent - "NO"Ask the other parent (lol) - "NO"Rinse and repeat, beg and plead. Cry and try every angle, every avenue until one parent, maybe both, can see how badly the child wants the thing, it must really be important to them and the next moment....their persistence has paid off!Anyway, I'll save all the details for the episode, I've jam packed it with punch, so enjoy! Share your aha's or persistence examples with me after you've tuned in. With sincere gratitude and sending love your way, Ria

I've FAILED and PROCRASTINATED so much it hurts! Not delivering episodes regularly has killed me every single week that goes by. Why do we do this to ourselves? Procrastinate, then feel like a failure. These "blocks" don't benefit us, they hinder us, from doing the things we truly want to do. So here I am, months and months later again talking about time going by so quicky, but this time with some TIPS on how you can overcome failure and procrastination faster than I've certainly been able to. I will do better! Lets finish 2024 strong! What are you going to focus on? Let me know :) Enjoy Superhuman! With Love, Ria
In the Philippines, the term “mestiza” is used to describe a woman of mixed heritage, and a new restaurant in San Francisco's Filipino Heritage District celebrates not only a rich fusion and reimagining of flavors but a philosophy of building community and sharing food traditions across cultures. Mestiza is the vision of Deanna Sison, who is known for championing her cultural roots in all her restaurant and hospitality endeavors which include Little Skillet, Victory Hall, and the Mestiza Taqueria. Bringing the vision to life is Chef Syl Mislang - her expertise as a plant-based chef hails from her beginnings at the Sacramento Co-Op to her pop-up concept, The Roaming Spoon, and as Executive Corporate Chef at Miyokos. Chef Syl now brings all of her experiences to the Mestiza table, featuring the flavors of the Philippines with hyper-local and hyper-seasonal plant-forward foods. In this episode, we chat about how their partnership came about, Mestiza's plant-forward fusion of flavors, the wonder of kamayan, and more! Inspired by a journal entry I wrote just after my birthday early this month, I've had this topic marinating and ready to roll out this heart to heart with you today. There's something about birthdays, the reflection that takes place weeks or days leading up to and the post-bday reflections. A kindred path of reflections and deep pondering occur in the lead up to and post a funeral, about the persons life being commemorated.Let me know if you've had similar thoughts. A short, casual chat about birth and death. With love, Ria Mestiza
This conversation could have branched off into many directions, but the surprising truth is, it's not inherently "bad" to people please or fit in, until it IS. Everything has a time and place, but if you find yourself being an incessant doormat and wall flower in your life, your unique self is being stunted from blossoming. THIS we want to make sure does NOT happen. As always, follow your instincts. If you feel pulled to tune in, then this bite sized episode is for you! Enjoy Superhuman
It's been a crazy month, have you felt the shifts and energetic changes in your body? Sometimes we can ignore these feelings in our bodies, but something feels different this time. Lets talk about what's been going on this last month and what you could also be potentially experiencing. As much as these "live chats" are out of my comfort zone, they feel necessary. If you're enjoying them and have a topic or question in mind for a future episode, please feel free to comment and make a suggestion via any of the SYS social channels.I'll get better at being more succinct in time just chatting away by myself, I'm quite comfortable chatting to guests, but solo chats are a different ballgame I'm still getting used to. Thank you for your patience and support as always.Hope you find this helpful. Til nextime superhuman!Much love, Ria MestizaPS- You might also find amethyst stone crystals helpful to hold or keep on you when you're feeling overwhelmed, anxious or nervous. I've been wearing a crystal bracelet with some other stones on it also all month :)
I'm back Superhumans! And today I talk about and share my example of fear of failure (and success) with you via this LIVE raw and real conversation over coffee or tea perhaps *virtual cheers*. I can't believe it's been almost three months! That was confronting for me to see, but I'm excited to bring this to you today and I hope my example and this episode will help nudge you to do something you perceive as scary, like going live and putting yourself in a position to fail AND succeed - all at the same time. Impossible? I AM possible. I just did it. Now it's your turn ;)Much love always fellow superhuman summoners, Coach Ria Mestiza

Over the past few years, singer, songwriter, and producer Cé Cicada has been fine-tuning music inspired by his love of the bass and Caribbean melodies. Based both in Los Angeles and Puerto Rico, Cicada's “Mestiza” is a flirty, lo-fi ballad basking on a bed of beats.

In this episode, I am joined by my friend and guest – Ria Mestiza. She is the coach to ambitious high achievers ready to take control of their health who seek to achieve their best body and lifestyle for optimization and longevity. She is the Founder of Fitsique Wellness & Performance and the host of “Summon Your Superhuman” Podcast. I have a tremendous amount of admiration for her and her health journey, for her willingness to show up in the world. But most importantly, because she's trying to make an impact and give people the tools to live a healthy, fulfilling, and sustainable life. We connected after well through the 10X community, which I know you guys have heard me many times in Grant Cardone's organization. And she's just a powerhouse, a rock star, an amazing human being, and someone who has been driven by the mission to overcome her own experiences and challenges and give people the tools to do the same. One of the most important things that we can do as individuals is have mentors and leaders and coaches who are just simply a step-in front of us to mimic model and master what they do and to leverage their tools, to circumnavigate the chaos of what it takes to figure out a lot of things on your own and a great testament of a person who not only has executed to that in her own life, but gives those same tools to the people of the world who are so willing to accept them.
