One World in a New World with Stephen Karbaron - Consultant, Speaker, Visionary Stephen's life was filled with serendipitous synchronicities, from his early Cub Scout days to being sponsored by Ray Ban for a 13-city tour in Russia as DJ, to personal development events featuring Anthony Robbins to developing a conscious leadership development organization in Spain and working with Conscious Enterprise Network. You'll enjoy the dive into the realms of his experience. In an initial tasty tidbit, he notes that in every leadership role he's had that he just wanted people to have fun around him. He spoke of government grants that were available when he was in college for creating fun events. It led to the awareness of peace including being happy and having fun. How does that happen in business and society? Listen to how Stephen shares his wisdom, including mentioning the 'First Follower' video from Simon Sinek. Both married Russian women, experiencing and learning a much different story than Western-themed history. His story about his experience in Russia is worth exploring for insight and understanding while having what he calls a very 'surreal' experience. Zen asks if there were any conversations that were highly impactful to both him and others. He talks about his beginnings in the Rave scene in England in the 1990s. His illustration is quite interesting, as well as unexpected, including mind-altering drugs and a football team's involvement. "Peace is really what we all want," Stephen says, and continues to offer references to many types of experiences and situations where both people and government at the time were in a state of agreement. Imagine that today. He goes on to say, "you can't blame everyone else and be responsible for your life and whatever is going on in it." It's a paradox that just isn't possible. What kinds of questions did he ask of himself and of life that led him toward greater understanding and peace. He shares a series of questions and expounds upon the reasons as well as the transformation he experienced with them. You've got to hear them as they may just help you ask better questions, too. This conversation has great value on multiple levels as you will no doubt experience. Thanks in advance for listening and may your life be enhanced by doing so. Our guest this week is Shelia Butler, COO of the Arrangement. Shelia is also a former classmate of mine in the Baylor University Dallas Executive MBA Program, Class 10 (2004) Shelia has experience starting, building and selling companies. She also has experience as a Consultant, Industry Thought Leader and Speaker. Shelia was "Podcasting Before Podcasting Was Cool". We discuss what it used to be like to run a podcast. Some of the most important things about podcasting: There are many ways to get your self out there if you want to be seen as a "thought leader". A podcast can be shared many ways, and it helps create content. A podcast can also help you discover a little more about who you are . . . and can push the theme of "not being afraid to fail". Podcasting can help you take on and overcome various challenges. In Shelia's case, Podcasting helped her speak to people more, which led to speaking opportunities and business consulting opportunities. Tips for entrepreneurs who are starting a business. Be intentional. Everyone thinks it is necessary to be on all social media platforms and be everything to everybody. Shelia suggests that these three things should be the focus: Be clear on your governing values: Hyrum W. Smith (Franklin Quest/Franklin Covey) talks about governing values. Know who you are and what you stand for in life. Have intense clarity on everything else: goals, habits, communication, in every aspect of your life. Know how to grow your business (3 ways): 1. Increase number of clients; 2. Increase the average value transaction of a client; 3. Increase the number of transactions per year. Decide what needs to be done to make these things happen and then determine which social media and marketing platforms can help make this happen. Above all, don't be afraid to fail and try something different. How to focus on Strategic Planning and Leadership. Realize that you don't know everything and learn from others -- it can make a big impact in your business. Don't be afraid to pivot. And pivot quickly. It is okay to learn and grow from your experiences and move on. Shelia's Favorite Book Clarity First by Karen Martin Shelia's Favorite Business Leader Sara Blakely, Spanx -- Bootstrapped her company from day one. Her father told her "don't be afraid to fail." Today, we are delighted to have the honor of speaking to Liz King Caruso! Liz is an icon, a thought-leader, and an innovator in our industry! She is an entrepreneur. She has been running her company for the last ten years, and she has gained recognition for her success from many different publications and organizations. Liz is joining us today to discuss the difference between virtual and face to face events and how to design them. She will explain what you need to learn now to be ready afterward. She will also talk about what you need to know to be able to plan a virtual experience and to partner with the people helping you to deliver that experience to your customer. Liz King Caruso's bio Liz King Caruso is an Event Specialist, Consultant & Speaker who is passionate about impactful, successful & fun events. Liz launched Liz King Events while still running events FT for Columbia University and quickly became a thought leader/influencer amongst her peers after voraciously sharing content on event best practices. Liz works with thought leaders like Ramit Sethi, Microsoft, SeatGeek, Teamworthy Ventures, Ramon Ray, and many others to host strategic conferences and events that engage their audience, build their brand and sell their products and services. She also works with other independent event hustlers to help them run more successful businesses through her consulting program called IGNITE. IGNITE helps amazing planners tap into their brilliance and build their thought leadership so they can get more of the right clients and become more financially stable. In addition, Liz ran one of the most iconic event-tech conferences in the industry called Techsytalk LIVE. Liz has been featured in the Successful Meetings list of 25 Most Influential People in the Meetings Industry, Connect Magazine's list of 40 Under 40 Up-and-Coming Event Planners, and Meetings and Conventions list of Top Influential Female Leaders in the Events Industry, amongst other awards. How Liz got into the industry Liz initially worked in a counseling center and wanted to be a family psychologist. She later changed her mind, so she moved on and took an administrative position on the event team at Columbia University in New York City. Before that, she had no idea that event planning could be a career. She had always planned events while growing up, so she pursued it and ended up getting promoted into a role that just did the events. She got lots of experience and eventually broke out on her own and started running Liz King Events. A mentor Having a mentor is very important. Liz was mentored by France La Flamme, who runs La Flamme Consulting Group, in Connecticut. They got connected through an organization called Score. Becoming a thought leader If you want to become a thought leader, Liz advises you not to try to become one. You need to be curious, willing to collaborate, and willing to share your experiences. You also need to pay attention to understanding your specific niche and what you are very good at doing, and you have to be specific. A key to developing thought leadership A key to developing thought leadership is keeping people in the know regarding what your thoughts are. It is not about the size of your audience It is not about the size of your audience. It is about you having some meaningful thoughts around a particular topic that people can identify. Techsytalk Techsytalk started in about 2010 because Liz wanted to know more about the cool platforms that she was learning about. It was Internet Week in New York City, so Liz partnered with a friend in the industry, and they decided to do a showcase. They gave ten companies four minutes each to share what they were doing, followed by networking. The goal was for Liz to learn, and from there, the conference kept on evolving. Techsytalk is coming back Liz will be bringing Techsytalk back in November of this year. She is ready to push the boundaries now because the demand is a lot higher, currently. The balance between hybrid and online events going forward Many people have been doing many online events during the COVID crisis, so there is a lot of scope for opportunity. Since many have seen that some platforms are not meeting their needs to do things virtually, the technology is currently evolving very quickly because the tech companies finally have enough clients to push everything to where it needs to be. Getting back to in-person events with hybrid Liz thinks that hybrid is not going to be just a transition. She thinks it will help us get to in-person events faster and more safely. And now that people know what can be done with virtual, it will stay as a long-term component of most large conferences and events, and larger conventions and city-wide events. Retreat businesses will be booming Liz foresees that the retreat business will be booming in the future. There will be a lot more small face-to-face groups of people, high-end tickets, and meaningful experiences, and also a lot more similar virtual experiences. Some tools for engagement Liz suggests mixing up your formats and offering short sessions combined with longer sessions when necessary. And also rethinking what you would typically do in an in-person environment. Fun is important with virtual Fun is important with virtual because it is harder to keep people engaged in a virtual setting. Virtual is flexible Virtual offers more flexibility than in-person, so you need to consider new kinds of opportunities for using virtual. Designing a virtual event versus a face-to-face event Many planners become overwhelmed with the idea of a virtual event. Yet, the skill set required for planning a virtual event is much the same as the skill set for planning a face-to-face event. A great event planner will look at the goals and then design a program to fit those goals. Virtual networking Great event planners need to work out new and innovative ways to do virtual networking. People prefer person-to-person Since people prefer having a person-to-person experience and talking to others face-to-face, Liz does not see virtual reality and holograms taking over in the events world. An optimistic view of the future of the meetings and events industry Liz sees good things for the future of the industry because it is very resilient, and it brings out people's creativity. Technology, particularly in the virtual space, is being pushed to new levels, which gets companies to innovate, and people are craving in-person experiences right now, so there will be more opportunities for in-person experiences in the future than we have had in the past. Disruptions are necessary Liz believes that we need disruptions in our industry. If we look back at this time thirty years from now, we will see how far we have come as a result of having gone through this difficult time. Getting ready for the future Right now, you will need to learn more about technology and the virtual experience because that will carry you long into the future. You also need to think about the value that you bring to the table and what you do for your clients because there could be some new, non-virtual services that you could be offering them that are just outside of the box. Done is better than perfect. Today I had the pleasure of sitting down with the incredible Bec Mitchell. Perfectionism, mental health, morning routines and self-care were just a few of the many topics we talked about in today's podcast. Bec teaches wellbeing strategies to Australia's top organisations, including CBA, Westpac, EY, General Assembly and The Australian Army. As a child, she was obsessed with understanding 'the meaning of life'. She would drive her parents mad, refusing to sleep until someone would explain to her 'why' we are here. And as she grew older this question evolved into the one that is a little easier to answer, and arguably more relevant: 'How do we live our best life?' Bec went on to first study Philosophy and Psychology at The University of Melbourne and then moved into Physiotherapy. For the first 7 years of her Physiotherapy career, she was fortunate enough to learn the importance of evidence-based medicine as she worked alongside some of Australia's top surgeons, sports doctors, dieticians and physios at Olympic Park Sports Medicine. But still, the existential questions continued to burn inside her… so she went on to do further study in meditation teaching and nutrition and is now completing her Masters in Psychology and Neuroscience. Bec aims to help everyone access the science of healthy habits, so you can use your brain to its full ability, and maybe even get a little happier along the way. Simon is a chap I came across via LinkedIn (booo) and we immediately hit it off. He's a respected brand consultant and serial clothing entrepreneur. He's taken a kicking and done very well. Life! Let’s meet Krista Fabrick. Krista teaches Marketing and Social Networking through both the theoretical side and the more practical elements, utlising the many social platforms in what she teaches. This also transfers onto startups and small businesses, who simply haven’t the time to sit down, learn, develop and implement a marketing strategy. Not only that, but Krista is also pursuing a Doctorate in Business Admin and Marketing with a specific view on social media. More on that later. Takeaways - As we heard last week with our chat with Mark Shaw, you need to understand the platforms to use them successfully. Krista takes this one step further with the premise that you need to understand the history, the principals, strategies, frameworks and foundations of each platform to early gain a competitive advantage when using them. Without this knowledge you are starting right at the bottom with a long way to go! - Consistency, consistency, consistency. Showing up regularly and getting into the habit of this being part of your daily life. Yes there are other comms channels we need to consider, but they are just they same. We all need consistency in what we do, which leads onto the final takeaway. - Learn the theory and practice this in the real world. It what good marketing is all about. Many don't want to do the theory and go straight to the practical, which can work, but in my opinion, it takes twice as long and not documenting your progress can start to make you make decisions based on intuition alone. Not a good long term strategy. Top Tip - The 7P's round up I just want to wrap up our look at the 7 P’s, the extended marketing mix and why it’s important that you always consider every element. They are all linked together. If you change one element it will have an effect on others. Lets take a look at an example of how this would work. Let's start with Price – And you increase the price of a service dramatically. This will have an effect on the People as your customer will expect a higher level of service for a higher price. Your Physical Evidence will probably have to be updated to highlight the additional quality you now include. And your Promotional material will need to mirror the change in both physical evidence and pricing structure. That is the complexity of the Marketing Mix and why it should never be placed in the background. It should be front and center in your tactical Marketing approach. Johny O’Donnell shares his wisdom on how to grow business online and reduce risk in both business and at home. In this show we look at how consultants, coaches and therapists can outsmart rather than outspend to gain clients, and reduce the dependence on themselves in the business to enable them to work more creatively and strategically. Guest Bio: Johny is a Founder of Shifton a business education and consultancy firm. He is a Strategist, Consultant & Speaker on Marketing, Digital & Generations in the Workplace; he has a very fresh approach to business and one that approaches customers with a lot of care and respect Quotes: “How can you move slow while things are moving fast? How do you slow the world down in such a way that when you’re required to be on and you’re required to be constantly going, and you’re required to make quick decisions and work fast, how do you slow that down in such a way that you get the chance to enjoy it?” “Capital can make us lazy... the last thing (the business) needed was fuel, it actually needed more thought not more money” “You have to outsmart rather than outspend people” “Adversity... has really helped shape the business today” “Confusion is the step before breakthrough.” “What you are looking for in life is full absorption - the good, the bad, the ugly, the interesting - you want to take it all in. That means a lot of the time you will find yourself in this situation where you’re overwhelmed and you’ve taken on too much and that’s in your personal life and professional life. But that’s what live our life to full absorption and passion is, and you don’t have to let go of that”. “I may not be in complete control, but I am in control in a number of ways” “The sooner you start designing a business that has a life without you the better, because you can still achieve all of your goals and free yourself up in such a way that you can play in your zone. “The quicker you can free yourself up to do the things you’re good at… and the sooner you can start to create an asset for yourself, and not a job or a life sentence... the more freedom you’ll have. “The more freedom...space and financial security you have, you’ve got a greater chance of having more headspace for creative and strategic breakthroughs - that will actually make you more successful and rewarding.” You can connect with Johny: www.shifton.co https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnyodonnell/ Get your free guide '20 Affordable Sales Funnel Tools for Your Consulting or Coaching Business' http://riskfreefunnel.com/ Subscribe on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher and everywhere good podcasts are found.

Alan Weiss Stop Searching for Others’ Permission to Live Your Life Are you achieving your goals or the goals someone else has for your life? Even if you think they are your goals, are you sure? Every day, insidiously, our power and control can be eroded if we let it. Often, we are allowing forces beyond our control, and even beyond our consciousness, affect how we make choices and decisions. How many times have you pushed yourself exercising because of being with others in exercise class? Have you ever stayed seated on an airplane because the seatbelt light was on, and you needed to use the bathroom? Then you see someone else heading to the restroom and you use that as permission to get up? We are allowing others to determine what we do in life, and we don’t realize it. Start living your life consciously and deliberately. Eustan Matthews is a Business Coach, Consultant & Speaker who helps busy entrepreneurs and business owners avoid or escape what he calls “The Freedom Quandary.” At the time of our discussion, he’s taken on a project called “40 Coffees in 40 Days,” designed to meet with a different small business owner on 40 separate occasions and to solve one challenge in their business over a cup of coffee. Like anyone else, Eustan’s story is not without its challenges. Being moved from his home country of Trinidad at an early age left him with feelings and questions he’s had to carry with him since. And, like most of us, his journey has taken twists and turns and has provided opportunities for him to re-examine his path and what he can be doing to best represent his authentic self on a day-to-day basis. I think he’s on to it. Some of the key things I took away from the time with Eustan include: 1. Leaving Authentic Impressions – It occurred me, as I listened to Eustan speak about people in his life, how many impressions are being made and absorbed over the course of a day, a week or a lifetime. We make impressions on so many other people, both good and not as good, without even trying, and these impressions become part of our collective experience, in both how we identify ourselves, and in what we say about ourselves to others. 2. Invest in the person, not in the business (or the numbers) – A wise choice for any business involving human beings, in my opinion. 3. Positivity is a choice – He tells a great story about a time when he asked his wife, “Am I a negative person?” The honest answer he got presented him with a choice as to how he wanted to move forward. I believe he chose well. ©2017 Kevin Bulmer Enterprises
Claire is a dynamic leader within the multi billion dollar network marketing industry and she is building a fast growing, global business – and is, every day, helping others to achieve their own success. Claire's story saw her begin her career within the insurance industry where she carved out her specialism within the legal professions market. She established her first insurance brokerage business at just 20 years old and latterly sold her second business to a major national broker. Thereafter Claire was asked to take on the role of Group Operations Director of the company which bought her own business and was subsequently head hunted for the role of Managing Director of a large commercial insurance brokerage. After 20 years of working for her clients – meaning long hours and very little by the way of work/life balance, Claire made the bold decision to leave her career behind in order to take her many skills in to an altogether different sector. She felt a strong desire to build a business that would allow her to equal her prior success, while affording a work/life balance that she had not been able achieve before. More importantly she was determined to help many other people to be able to do the same for themselves. Claire found the perfect vehicle in Forever Living – with its exclusive, unrivalled products and proven business model. She saw an amazing business opportunity that she knew she could share, with unbridled passion. Claire works with carefully selected individuals, who share her zest for life and desire to stand apart from the rest – she shares her extensive business experience with them and supports them every step of the way towards their own success. Claire is recognised as a great leader, trainer and mentor. Today's guest is Dorie Clark. She's a frequent contributor to Harvard Business Review, Time and Entrepreneur. She's been recognized as a branding expert by The Associated Press, Inc, and Fortune. What's a brand? Yeah we're gonna talk about that with Dorie. I believe I have a brand; sometimes I hesitate to admit it because I think it sounds, sometimes, a little snobby to say that I have a brand. But she puts it in a way that really democratizes this concept of having a personal brand. You have a brand, whether you're working at a company, an entrepreneur, a mom staying at home with your kids raising them, you have a brand! And so the earlier you recognize that, and nurture that, and cultivate that, the better off you can be. Now Dorie also serves as a marketing strategy consultant and speaker for many notable clients, including Google, Microsoft, Yale University, Fidelity, and World Bank among others. She's the author of two great books; the first is called "Reinventing You", and more recently she's the author of "Stand Out: How to Find Your Breakthrough Idea and Build a Following Around It". She currently is an adjunct professor of business administration at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, and a visiting professor for IE Business School in Madrid. Dorie was also featured on Huffington Post as a 100 Must Follow on Twitter in 2013 and 2014. She's also on the Nifty 50 list of top women on Twitter, and most notably she was named on of Inc Magazine's 100 Great Leadership Speakers for Your Next Conference, and recognized in Forbes as one of 25 professional networking experts to watch in 2015. So she is, as it pertains to branding and leadership, she's your go-to and she's on the show today. So I'm very honored.
