The Stiles family toured the country as carnival performers, with Grady Stiles Jr. as the main attraction under the big tent. Charismatic and charming to the crowds who came to see him, no one could have guessed the horror that was going on behind closed doors, especially for his wife, Mary Teresa Stiles. It all came to light the night of November 28th, 1992 when Grady was found shot in his home. It's not long before police uncover Grady's family at the center of a murder-for-hire plot. On the morning of October 3, 1994, a hysterical mother called 911 to report that her son had been gravely injured and was bleeding from the head. Upon their arrival, first responders found 18-year-old Aaron Iturra injured but still breathing. Who would have done this, and why? This case is baffling for a slew of reasons, mainly because the mastermind behind this horrible murder was a mother herself... The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 4th and final study session on Fred Rosen's The Bayou Strangler: Louisiana's Most Gruesome Serial Killer. As Gus stated, there wasn't a lot of press coverage about Ronald J. Dominique and the 23 males he killed in Louisiana. There isn't a rich collection of video and written reports documenting family members's loss and the furor over the killings. That's probably irrelevant to Rosen - who died in 2020. At the very beginning of The Bayou Strangler, Rosen informs readers that some people's names have been changed, but all other elements of this history remain true to the record. During last week's reading, we discovered Rosen's book is flagrantly inaccurate. In fact, Gus and several listeners suspect Rosen changed names of characters so that he can more easily fabricate details of these crimes. Rosen tells us that one "John Banning" was "horny" and willing to accompany Dominique once offered the chance to earn a few nickels having sex with a White Woman. The allegedly feverish black male is actually named Ricky Wallace, and he has no need for anonymity. He was on the front of the artwork for a 2011 documentary on these crimes, and is mentioned in newspaper reports as well. Equally important, Rosen tells readers that "Banning" declined the offer and walked away. Wallace provided a sworn statement to his White parole officer, where he indicated that he had a standoff of at least twenty minutes inside Dominique's residence. After using a modicum of counter-violence, he convinced the White man to drive him back to where they met. Wallace said he threatened to strike Dominique in the face during the drive because the White man repeatedly reached for a compartment on the driver's door. There is no logical reason for Rosen to lie about these events. His fabrication is no more entertaining and it gives White enforcement officers unearned credit for solving this case. Wallace initiated contact with officers after the near fatal encounter with Dominique. #Katrina17 #NOLA #DelectableNegro #TheCOWS13 INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE: 564943#
The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 3rd study session on Fred Rosen's The Bayou Strangler: Louisiana's Most Gruesome Serial Killer. Last week marked seventeen years since Hurricane Katrina touched land and initiated the levee breach in New Orleans. This past week featured a great deal of reminiscing about the 2005 tragedy, but Ronald Dominique was not mentioned. Last week, Rosen detailed how Dominique dumped a body during the middle of a 2004 Tropical Storm. Although Dominique killed mostly black males, he also murdered several White Men. Listeners acutely noted that the White author did not include the same pornographic details about the nude White corpses as is the case with black victims. Rosen also takes a number of cheap shots at the Victims as well as their family members. Black teen murder victim Datrell Woods was described as: "A real piece of work." Rosen informs readers that his family never visited him or contacted. White victims like alleged crack abuser Larry Matthews are not subjected to thinly veiled insults. This week's session offers excellent insight on how Whites practice deception. #Katrina17 #NOLA #DelectableNegro #TheCOWS13 INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE: 564943#

The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 2nd study session on Fred Rosen's The Bayou Strangler: Louisiana's Most Gruesome Serial Killer. Ironically, this book and the book we just finished, Absolute Madness, are both "true crime" texts written by White authors detailing the slaughter of dozens of black males. Both books were published in 2017. In fact, the parallels between these two serial killings are unrelenting. The rampant child rape within the Roman Catholic Church is a core element of what transpired in Buffalo and in New Orleans. Listeners and Gus T. suspected Joseph G. Christopher may have been raped and/or molested by his father or a member of the Buffalo diocese. Ronald Dominique alleged that he was molested as a child by a Catholic priest. The Houma-Thibodaux and New Orleans's dioceses released lengthy lists of White men accused of raping children. In fact, the FBI recently launched an investigation into the child molestation charges against the New Orleans diocese. They're employing the very same Mann Act used against the great Jack Johnson more than a century ago. Last week Rosen employed the term "Cajun culture" to describe the widespread sexual abuse of children by adults - often including parents and other family members of the victim. Gus reminded listeners that southern Louisiana has a centuries long, proud history of sexual debauchery of all sorts. All of this evidence makes it difficult to believe that a White man would be mercilessly teased about being "gay" in this part of the world during any part of the last 200 years. #Katrina17 #NOLA #DelectableNegro #TheCOWS13 INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE: 564943#

The Katherine Massey Book Club at The C.O.W.S. hosts the debut study session on Fred Rosen's The Bayou Strangler: Louisiana's Most Gruesome Serial Killer. Ironically, this book and the book we just finished, Absolute Madness, are both "true crime" texts written by White authors detailing the slaughter of dozens of black males. Both books were published in 2017. Gus T. likes to poke his chest out about The C.O.W.S.'s robust coverage of Hurricane Katrina and the 2005 levee breach in New Orleans. Even with our numerous broadcasts and years of coverage of these events, we completely omitted Ronald Dominique. For almost a decade, a White man stalked black males in southern Louisiana with zero suspicion. He anally raped and killed nearly two dozen black males before being convicted in 2006. Apparently, just like Joseph G. Christopher, people didn't think Dominique was threatening because he was a short, tubby, White Man who liked to dress as Patti LaBelle. #Katrina17 #NOLA #DelectableNegro #TheCOWS13 INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE: 564943#

Nearly 100 years since his death, Bat Masterson still holds great influence. Remembered by many for his adventures in America’s Old West - buffalo hunter, scout, gunfighter, and even lawman as Dodge City sheriff. in 20th Century New York City he became a sportswriter. However, Masterson left a legacy that is much more intricate. Masterson always stood up for the underdog. And his real legacy was how he fought for them. After the days of the Old West were over, he laid down his gun and picked up his pen. So great was his writing that he was vastly respected for his opinions on many topics of the day including, crime, politics, and war. But Bat Masterson had a secret. One that he kept well-hidden his entire life. For if known, he and all those he cared about would be ruined. His reputation and all that he worked for in his life would be in tatters. A Michigan couple’s affair leads to two grisly murders by heroin injection in this true crime account from the acclaimed author of Lobster Boy.When Carol Giles’s friend Nancy Billiter was found dead—she had been bound, sexually violated, and injected with a lethal dose of battery acid and heroin—detectives in Michigan traced Billiter’s death back to Giles and her boyfriend, Tim Collier. Police also learned that the diabolical duo shared another secret: They had murdered Giles’s husband, Jessie. Jessie, who had died months before Billiter, was disinterred, and an autopsy proved he’d been given a lethal shot of heroin instead of his prescribed insulin. Homebound and diabetic, Jessie was a heroin dealer. Police determined that Giles—who was fed up with taking care of her husband and children—along with her lover, Collier, had stolen the fatal dose from Jessie’s own drug supply. The cops surmised that Billiter’s death might have been due to her knowledge of the couple’s plot. In their dramatic trial, Giles and Collier turned against each other, but both were eventually convicted of murder. NEEDLE WORK: Battery Acid, Heroin, and Double Murder-Fred Rosen

Baptist deacon, family man, pillar of his Florida community . . . and serial killer of prostitutes: chilling true crime from the author ofLobster Boy.By day, Sam Smithers was the deacon of his Baptist church in Plant City, Florida, a respected neighbor to many, and a devoted husband and father. But after the sun set, he became something else: a violent attacker—and killer—of prostitutes.Smithers’s twisted double life came to light when a local woman who had hired him to take care of her property found him in her garage, cleaning an ax—and then discovered a puddle of blood. Through exclusive interviews with Smithers’s wife, who described her spouse as nothing but a doting husband and father, author Fred Rosen learned why this man of God, raised in an intensely religious Tennessee home, was the last person anyone would suspect of committing these savage crimes. Rosen reveals the details behind the deaths of Christy Cowan and Denise Roach after Smithers picked them up in Tampa—and the fate of a man who seemed holier than thou, but was actually guilty as sin. They stared into the faces of pure evil . . . and survived!Ted Bundy . . . Jeffrey Dahmer . . .David "Son of Sam" Berkowitz . . . Dennis Rader, the BTK Killer . . .These are some of the names that strike terror into even the bravest of hearts. Human monsters, they preyed upon the unsuspecting, freely feeding their terrible hungers. Their crimes were unspeakable, as they maimed, tortured, killed, and killed again, leaving so many dead in their bloody wake. But somehow, astonishingly, seven would-be victims fell into the clutches of the century's worst serial killers—and escaped death through courage, divine providence, or just plain luck. This is the remarkable true story of those who lived. In 1997, the bodies of young African American men began turning up in the cane fields of the quiet suburbs of New Orleans. The victims—many of them transient street hustlers—had been brutally raped and strangled, but police had no leads on the killer’s identity. The murders continued, leaving southeast Louisiana’s gay community rattled and the police desperate for a break in the case. Detectives Dennis Thornton and Dawn Bergeron came together as task force partners, and they were indefatigable in their decade-long effort to track down the killer. In 2006, DNA evidence finally linked the murders to a suspect: the unassuming Ronald Joseph Dominique, who had lived under the radar for years, working as a pizza deliveryman and meter reader. But who was Ronald Dominique and what led him to commit such heinous crimes? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

On February 6th, 1973 in Detroit Michigan, drug dealer Ruben Bryant was shot dead. 21 year-old artist Ray Gray was convicted for the murder, the conviction based on a fixed line-up and no evidence. Raymond Gray is an internationally recognized artist. He is also in the 44th year of a life sentence for the 1973 murder of drug dealer Ruben Bryant. The state of Michigan has had in it's possession for over thirty of those years, an affidavit from one of the two hold-up men responsible for Bryant's murder, that exonerates Gray! And yet Michigan recently turned Gray down, yet again for sentence commutation. In 2007 Fred Rosen was looking to do a follow-up to one of his books and had the idea of interviewing lifers behind bars who had made something of their second chance. Also a film professor, Rosen recalled the 1960 film Convicts 4 starring Ben Gazzara as John Resko, a convicted murderer who became an artist behind bars. The art led to 'Reprieve' his autobiography that became that movie. Rosen started looking for someone like Resko and found Ray Gray in Muskegon Prison. After investigating Rosen realized he had found an innocent man. Not only had Gray been an artist before prison, he was a bout to go pro as a boxer, using the money he made from boxing to attend art school!Rosen knew getting an innocent man out of jail takes years, if you are lucky. If not...Rosen had a decison to make. Was he in-or out? 44 YEARS AND COUNTING: An Innocent Man in Prison-Ray Gray and Fred Rosen
Fred Rosen follows a killer’s trail back in time 2 decades to discover how a monster slipped through the legal systemWhen police in Tampa, Florida, arrested Larry Singleton in 1997 for brutally murdering prostitute Roxanne Hayes, they soon realized it wasn’t the man’s first violent attack. Back in 1978 he had gained notoriety as “the Mad Chopper” for raping and cutting off the arms of 15-year-old Mary Vincent on a patch of desolate, sun-scorched land 5 miles off the highway near Modesto, California. When Singleton was let out of prison on supervised parole after serving only 8 years for his crimes, no community in California would accept him. He eventually moved back to his home in Florida, where he killed Hayes nearly 20 years after his original crime. But his first victim, Vincent, had survived, walking nearly a mile to get help after the assault, and testified against him at his trial for murdering Hayes. Nine of the most controversial violent crimes in America's history are reexamined in these compelling stories of true crime. Dr. Samuel Mudd set John Wilkes Booth's broken ankle, but was he actually part of the larger conspiracy to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln? Did Lizzie Borden brutally murder her own parents in Massachusetts? Was admitted jihadist Zacarias Moussaoui really involved in the terrorist plot to destroy the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001?In a series of provocative and eye-opening true crime investigations, author Fred Rosen revisits some of the most shocking and notorious crimes in America over the past two centuries to determine once and for all...did they really do it? Applying logic and techniques of modern criminology while reexamining the crime scenes, official police records, and the original courtroom testimonies of witnesses and the accused, Rosen explores nine infamous crimes that rocked the nation and the verdicts that were ultimately handed down. From Ethel and Julius Rosenberg's execution for treason to the kidnapping and killing of the Lindbergh baby to the Ku Klux Klan slayings of three civil rights workers in Mississippi to 9/11, the alleged perpetrators get another day in court as Rosen calls into question the circumstantial evidence and cultural context that may have determined guilt or innocence in each case. DID THEY REALLY DO IT? -Fred Rosen
Shortly after being elected president of the United States, James Garfield was shot by Charles Guiteau. But contrary to what is written in most history books, Garfield didn’t linger and die. He survived. Alexander Graham Bell raced against time to invent the world’s first metal detector to locate the bullet in Garfield’s body so that doctors could safely operate. Despite Bell’s efforts to save Garfield, however, and as never before fully revealed, the interventions of Garfield’s friend and doctor, Dr. D. W. Bliss, brought about the demise of the nation’s twentieth president. But why would a medical doctor engage in such monstrous behavior? Did politics, petty jealousy, or failed aspirations spark the fire inside Bliss that led him down the path of homicide? Rosen proves how depraved indifference to human life—second-degree murder—rather than ineptitude led to Garfield’s drawn-out and painful death. Now, more than one hundred years later, historian and homicide investigator Fred Rosen reveals through newly accessed documents and Bell’s own correspondence the long list of Bliss’s criminal acts and malevolent motives that led to his murder of the president. Governor Rick Snyder, State of MichiganDear Gov. Snyder:In 1973, Raymond Gray was convicted of a murder he didn't commit. He is in the 43rd year of a life sentence in a Michigan prison and is up for parole. I've been working on freeing him for the last eight years. The facts are these.Ray Gray was a 21-year-old amateur boxer about to go pro. An artist, he was going to simultaneously attend art school. Then he got framed. His ex-girlfriend fingered him as one of the two hold-up men who murdered a drug dealer.Ray had witnesses to say he was home at the time. It was a bench trial and the judge didn't believe him. Instead, he sentenced him to life. Eight years later, Charles Mathews confessed in an affidavit that he was one of the hold-up men. The second hold-up man, now deceased, was Tyrone Pugh. From day one, Ray has maintained his innocence. I investigated and found everything he said to be true. Since going to prison, Ray has been a model prisoner. A mentor to younger prisoners, he has become a well known and respected artist behind bars.We respectfully request that you commute his sentence.http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/free-ray-grayCall Governor Rick Snyder at 517-373-3400.ed opperman reportThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement

In this episode we head to Florida with true crime author Fred Rosen. While investigating the murder of sideshow performer Grady Stiles, a.k.a. Lobster Boy, Rosen receives a videotape that changes the course of the trial forever. But not without a threat to his own life.
The author of the true crime classic Lobster Boy now turns his investigative skills to the chilling true story of Kendall Francois, one of the most bizarre serial sex-killers of modern times. In October, 1996, young, pretty, and petite women began vanishing off the streets of Poughkeepsie, New York. Most were prostitutes and some were addicts. By August, 1998, the toll had reached eight, when a prostitute told police she had barely escaped being strangled by Kendall Francois, 27, a 6'4", 300-lb. middle school hall monitor whose slovenly personal hygiene had earned him the nickname "Stinky." Inside his house, the smell was worse, as investigators discovered a tangle of rotting flesh and bones - eight female corpses, almost all decomposed. Francois was sentenced to life in prison without parole. BODY DUMP-Fred Rosen
Misfit Jeremiah Rodgers, 21, and racist devil worshipper Jonathan Lawrence, 23, were serving time for petty crimes when they met in a Florida penal system mental hospital. A friendship grew from their shared lust for sadistic brutality, and once released, they teamed up to hunt human prey. In March, 1998, in Pensacola, Florida, while quietly watching TV, Leighton Smitherman was shot in the back by assailants hiding outside his home. Amazingly, he survived, not knowing that he'd been chosen at random by would-be-thrill-killers. Their next target wasn't so lucky.Justin Livingston, 20, died from multiple stab wounds - some more than six inches deep. The horror peaked on 7 May 1999, when Rodgers went on a 'date' with pretty Jennifer Robinson, 18, with Lawrence tagging along. The young woman was drugged and assaulted first by Rodgers, then Lawrence, before Rodgers shot her execution-style. But the worse was yet to come, an unspeakable act of mutilation that followed in the bloody footsteps of one of the most infamous serial killers of our time...FLESH COLLECTORS-Cannibalism and Further Depravity on the Redneck Riviera-Fred RosenNATUREBOX-Snack Smarter-Start Free Trial-For Delicious Details: http://www.naturebox.com/offer/free/sampler/?utm_source=truemurder&utm_medium=podcast&utm_content=link&utm_campaign=2014_podcast&afid=truemurder

On January 10, 2013, Kendrick Johnson's parents reported their 17 year-old son missing. The next day at Kendrick's school, Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Georgia, in the gym students saw what they thought was a pair of socks sticking out of a gym mat, but when they approached they told investigators they realized it was a body. According to Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine, Kendrick Johnson died while reaching into an upright gym mat in the old gym on Jan. 10 trying to retrieve a sneaker that had fallen inside, instead Kendrick fell in, couldn't get out and smothered to death from positional asphyxiation. The original autopsy report ruled Johnson's death an accident, stating that the teen suffocated after getting stuck in a gym mat while reaching for a sneaker. However, Johnson's parents weren't convinced it was an accident, and they got a court order to have their son's body exhumed. The second autopsy report showed the teen's death was not an accident, stating that Johnson had sustained "non-accidental, blunt force trauma." During an autopsy, internal organs are removed and examined before being returned for burial. But when the private pathologist who conducted the second autopsy on Johnson opened up the teen's remains, the brain, heart, lungs, liver and other viscera were missing. Every organ from the pelvis to the skull was gone and had been replaced with newspaper.Federal prosecutor Micheal Moore is reopening the case. THE KENDRICK JOHNSON MURDER-Fred Rosen and Beau Webster
Beau Webster is a Tallahassee, Florida based private investigator who is a former officer with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department. Like Travis McGee, the famous fictional private investigator created by John D. McDonald, Webster prowls the southern tier of the U.S., working for those in need of justice. Like Kendrick Johnson, A Valdosta, GA teenager, Johnson, an African American, was found dead in the gym of the high school he attended rolled up in a gym mat. Investigating, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation claimed Johnson died accidentally when he crawled into the mat and smothered. What they didn't explain was why his face was bludgeoned and bloody and why he had a stab wound on his arm. Working for the Johnson family attorney, Webster has uncovered a conspiracy by mostly white high school athletes that led to Johnson's death and the refusal of the local authorities to indict them, making this a civil rights case. Gary Michael Hilton once sold his movie idea to Hollywood. The straight-to-video Deadly Run was about a man who captures women only to set them free on his very private and secluded Georgia land so that he can hunt and kill them.In 2007 (at least, that's the earliest investigators have been able to prove), he brought Hollywood to life when he began using state parks as his own personal hunting grounds.Convicted of murder and sentenced to death-it would seem the case was not closed. Rosen was commissioned by the Atlanta Journal Constitution to write a front page piece for their Sunday section on the real time-line of Meredith Emerson's murder which is covered in his book Trails of Death. Rosen was denied information and now realizes the timeline in the book is wrong. Emerson should probably still be alive. The truth never came out and Rosen is pursuing the story. In 1980 in Toledo, Ohio—on one of the holiest days of the church calendar—the body of a nun was discovered in the sacristy of a hospital chapel. Seventy-one-year-old Sister Margaret Ann had been strangled and stabbed, her corpse arranged in a shameful and stomach-churning pose. But the police's most likely suspect was inexplicably released and the investigation was quietly buried. Despite damning evidence, Father Gerald Robinson went free. Twenty-three years later the priest's name resurfaced in connection with a bizarre case of satanic ritual and abuse. It prompted investigators to exhume the remains of the slain nun in search of the proof left behind that would indelibly mark Father Robinson as Sister Margaret Ann's killer: the sign of the Devil. When Satan Wore a Cross is a shocking true story of official cover-ups, madness, murder and lies—and of an unholy human monster who disguised himself in holy garb.
