Work is progressing on the titanium plant in Ravenswood that will be powered by solar microgrid…learn how advanced air mobility will change the future of healthcare in West Virginia…and take a peek inside Bruiser's Bus Rock Camp--an icon perched on a rock in the New River…on today's daily304. #1 – From CANARY MEDIA – A different metal-making plant is getting underway at the site of the former Century Aluminum in Ravenswood— and it will run primarily on renewable energy when it starts operations next year. Titanium Metals Corporation, or Timet, recently began construction on a facility that will melt titanium to be shaped into parts for airplanes and other uses. Just next door, BHE Renewables is preparing to install arrays of solar panels and large battery systems, which will form a solar microgrid that connects to the titanium facility. The project may be the first to directly power a large industrial facility using solar-plus-storage technology. Developers say they hope the setup can serve as a model for future manufacturing plants — especially as the United States ramps up domestic production of electric cars, solar panels, batteries, and the steel, aluminum, and other essential materials used to make them. One of the most intriguing and enduring is the full-size bus that somehow ended up on a huge rock in the middle of the New River at Gauley Bridge. In 1954, Walter Alexander Cole Jr., aka “Bruiser,” purchased the 1934 Greyhound bus for $1 and floated it on a barge down the Gauley to the New, where he hoisted it up onto the rock island. “Bruiser's Bus Rock Camp” became his private fishing oasis, attracting double-takes from startled drivers on Route 60. After Bruiser passed away in 2012, the bus camp was obtained by Terri Evans, the daughter of Bruiser's best friend. Now the Evans family have their own little private island in the New River where they can fish, paddle board, or just sit on the porch and take in the sights.  The Evanses say they plan on preserving it for years to come in Bruiser's memory. They are here for the Gauley River — which normally only has navigable flows during the fall.  The fall recreational flows are part of a planned effort of water releases in the fall to draw down Summersville Lake and support whitewater rafting and kayaking.  The colors on the hills change from a bright green in the beginning of the season to vibrant yellows, reds and oranges in the late season. The landscape is interrupted by the bright primary-colored boats, tutus, sequined shirts and glittered faces, all headed downstream from where the river begins at Summersville Dam.  “A lot of different colors, a lot of plastic on the water, a lot of smiling faces, a lot of glitter, a lot of lipstick,” says Matt McQueen, a park ranger with the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve.  “There's definitely a whole culture involved in the whitewater industry that is kind of unique, for sure.”  The Gauley River usually gets 20,000 to 30,000 visitors each season. Rangers are predicting that the numbers this year could be their highest yet. Louisiana is known for its swamps, and for good reason. In spite of some of the associations with have with the word swamp, I find them beautiful, mysterious, and magnetic. In this episode, I talk with Jessica Gauley about a section of swamp along the Pearl River known as Honey Island. Jessica grew up with the swamp and today runs Honey Island Kayak Tours, a company that specializes in intimate tours of the swamp. We talk about her childhood in the swamp, the rich plant and animal life at Honey Island, how the swamp changes with the seasons, and the fears inspired by the word swamp. She offers a few tips on visiting and paddling around Louisiana's swamps. Alligators come up a couple of times in our conversation, so in the Mississippi Minute, I offer a brief peak into the world of alligators.

After numerous trips on the river, Breuer launched Mountain River Tours in 1973. It was one of the first companies to offer rafting trips on the New and Gauley rivers.    As whitewater rafting increased in popularity, more outfitters popped up in the region and waged a friendly competition as they courted guests with lodging, dining, and additional outdoor adventures.    In 2007, a group of investors with a passion for whitewater rafting and a vision for expanding tourism in the New River region brought together three of the region's top outfitters—Class VI, The Rivermen, and Mountain River Tours. The investors also acquired the outfitters' assets, including rafting equipment, cabins, retail facilities, and restaurants…and Adventures on the Gorge was born. The Italian company took over the former Penn-Wheeling Closure site in the Northern Panhandle city when it purchased the company some 15 years ago. Tecnocap makes closures, or what the average person would call lids, for a variety of well-known brands including Classico, Raos, Village Candle, Anchor Hocking, Smuckers, Barilla, Pfizer, Procter & Gamble, and more. It also makes sauce jar closures for local company Figaretti's. One of the company's newest closures being manufactured in Glen Dale are twist-off caps without sharp edges. The caps will have smooth edges that will a person opening a bottle of beer or other beverage to twist it off with their bare hand instead of having to use a towel or other barrier “It's easier to open and retains its vacuum, extending the shelf life of goods,” said Paolo Ghigo, president of Tecnocap LLC. This week, we're airing an encore episode of Inside Appalachia. We'll meet a man who makes wooden turkey calls, not ordinary turkey calls. Painter Brian Aliff doesn't call himself an artist, but he intricately paints his turkey calls, which are now collectors' items. We'll also meet people who make wooden paddles by hand and custom-decorate each one, and a man who repairs cuckoo clocks. Finally, we'll travel to some of the most beautiful spots in Appalachia to find wildflowers, like Dolly Sods and the Canaan Valley of West Virginia. And we wonder -- are these areas becoming too popular? Those stories and more this week Inside Appalachia.  Welder Keeps Old Clocks Ticking When you need to check the time, where do you look? Most people turn to their phones or digital watches. These days, it seems like every electronic device has a clock function in addition to whatever it's supposed to do, but it hasn't always been this way. Not all that long ago, marking the passage of time was the job of one device — a clock. Folkways reporter Zack Harold spent some time with Carl Witt, a man in Fairview, West Virginia who learned how to repair clocks after crossing paths with the late Charles Decker. Witt, a welder at the time, decided to retire and went on to start his own clock repair business — Curiosity Clockworks.  Dolly Sods Hosts Wildflower Pilgrimage Dolly Sods is federally protected public land — full of rocky ridges, soggy bogs and beautiful views. It's also the site of an annual nature walk called the West Virginia Wildflower Pilgrimage. This weekend will be the 60th time that wildflower and birding experts descend on the area for the event. Inside Appalachia co-host Mason Adams made the pilgrimage from his home in Floyd County, Virginia to Dolly Sods last year for the pilgrimage. Paddlers Design Their Own Gear Appalachia has several huge rivers: the Gauley, the Youghiogheny and the New River, just to name a few. Whitewater paddling is popular in the region, but it wasn't that long ago modern paddlers first started exploring these rivers, designing their own gear and even building their own paddles. Some of those DIY paddle makers are now master crafters and their work is in high demand. As part of our Inside Appalachia Folkways Project, Clara Haizlett learned more. Handmade Turkey Calls Like many Appalachian traditions, turkey calls go way back. Historically, they've been used as a hunting tool, but one West Virginia artist has taken it to the next level. Brian Aliff makes hand-crafted, prize-winning decorative turkey calls. These pieces are functional and they're becoming collector's items, but it took a while for Aliff to think of himself as an artist. Hear Folkways reporter Connie Kitts talk with Aliff on this week's episode. Increase In Tourism Puts Strain On Local Infrastructure Tucker County, West Virginia, has seen a surge of new visitors from Washington, D.C. in the years since U.S. Route 48, also known as Corridor H, opened.  The growing number of visitors is good for business, but it's also straining the resources of a county with just one stoplight and 7,000 year-round residents. Mason Adams visited the towns of Thomas and Davis in Tucker County, West Virginia and has this story about managing growth and resources against the backdrop of expansive natural beauty. It's been a little bit since the last episode of the SUPPAUL Podcast. Since then I have run my home rivers in the PNW, spent the summer exploring new rivers and alpine lakes in Canada, and have spent much of the winter in the SE. One of the most celebrated South Eastern river is the Gauley. Known for its lethal undercuts and sieves, big rapids, and infamously raudy Gauley Fest in Fall, the Gauley is a bucket liost river for whitewater enthusiasts. But what about running it on paddle board? Um, let's talk with whitewater paddle boarder Chris Morgan to get that answer.
