Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

There is a little window, in the attic of a Dalmatian villa from the early middle ages, overlooking the dreamy cascade landscape of downtown Dubrovnik. It's early June, 8 am. A melody of old Mediterranean terracotta roofs plunging into each other is nursing a soft morning light. The polyphony of ages embedded in the stone makes the town glow from its neutron core. No corners are mislaid, and the fortress is keeping us safe. The window is slightly recessed, almost on the corner with Stradun, and a person with fine jumping skills could easily reach the roof of the church across the narrow street. It's Sunday, and the bells from the various towers across town are spilling their gongs. I needed to sleep a bit more. But the grinding machinery of tourism has its own agenda. Savagely squeaking swallows and the morning congregations of seagulls sound like a pastorale compared to the town's growling bowels. Air conditioning units, pumps, kitchen ventilation, garbage trucks, delivery vehicles, wheels, and trolleys of all sorts. I could not help but be fascinated by how a landscape of such beaming beauty can exist in this hideous soundscape. In all of its ugliness, the soundscape of Dubrovnik still hides so much contemporaneity. The large ventilation unit drones are textural and multiphonic. Anarchy in the town's electrical grid is constantly buzzing from nooks and crevices like some robo-brute. Sounds of the wagons for garbage collection, and the rivers of inbound and outbound suitcases are bouncing over the stone streets like a constant percussive development. I enjoyed it a lot. But perhaps we should give it a second thought. The noise in which certain Mediterranean architectural marvels are soaked due to uncontrolled mass tourism is a “silent” killer. Of the environment, and of the local culture and dignity. UNESCO listing: Old City of Dubrovnik Recorded by Manja Ristic. The new series of Dior Talks – hosted by Paris-based journalist Katya Foreman – is dedicated to the eagerly anticipated ninth edition of Dior Lady Art. Eleven global artists have been invited to transform the iconic Lady Dior handbag into a unique piece of art. For our latest guest, the American artist Vaughn Spann, collaborating on Dior Lady Art meant a change of scale. Adopting a conceptual approach, the New Jersey-based talent recalibrated details from a selection of his monumental works for three distinctive day-to-night variations of the Lady Dior that capture the signature otherworldly colors, materiality and feel of the original works.Spann's color-blocked red and black “Flame” Lady Dior has a richly textured, fiery, volcanic feel, while for the “Dalmatian” design, gridded, spotted abstractions offer a graphic twist on the bag's signature motifs. Meanwhile, for his “Marked Man” Lady Dior, a giant opaque “X” motif floats on a sheer pink plexiglass base topped by a retro briefcase handle, playfully blurring masculine-feminine codes. Embodying a cross-pollination of fashion and art, the contemporary creations are designed to accompany the wearer on different occasions, whether to a gala, a nightclub or on a ski trip, offering the opportunity to live with the artist's paintings in a more compact and intimate way.Download the episode to learn more about Spann's universe and Dior Lady Art journey.Hosted by Ausha. fWotD Episode 2800: Albona-class minelayer Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Friday, 3 January 2025 is Albona-class minelayer. The Albona class were mine warfare ships used by the Italian Regia Marina (Royal Navy) and Royal Yugoslav Navy (Serbo-Croatian Latin: Kraljevska mornarica; KM). Fourteen ships were originally laid down between 1917 and 1918 for the Austro-Hungarian Navy as the MT.130 class. However, the end of World War I and the dissolution of Austria-Hungary left them incomplete until 1920, when three ships were finished for the Regia Marina. These ships were armed with two 76 mm (3 in) guns. An additional five ships were completed for the KM in 1931 as the Malinska or Marjan class, and were armed with a single 66 mm (2.6 in). All of the completed ships could carry 24 to 39 naval mines. The remaining ships were never completed. The five ships in KM service were captured by Italian forces during the Axis invasion of Yugoslavia and commissioned in the Regia Marina as the Arbe class, and were re-armed with two 76 mm guns. They were involved in some operations against the Yugoslav Partisans along the Dalmatian coast. Following the Italian surrender in September 1943, the three Albona-class ships were captured by German forces with all three being lost or scuttled later in the war. Of the five former KM ships, one was seized and operated by the Kriegsmarine (German Navy) until it was lost. Another was captured but transferred to the navy of the German fascist puppet state, the Italian Social Republic, and scuttled by the Germans towards the end of the war. The remaining three were returned to the KM-in-exile at Malta in late 1943 and swept for mines around Malta until transferred to the new Yugoslav Navy (Serbo-Croatian Latin: Jugoslavenska ratna mornarica; JRM) in August 1945.After the war, the three ships were commissioned into the JRM and their designations were changed several times. In October 1946, two of them were involved in the Corfu Channel incident, an early clash in the developing Cold War, when they laid mines in the Straits of Corfu at the request of the People's Socialist Republic of Albania. The undeclared minefield damaged two British destroyers, killing 44 men and injuring another 42. The incident resulted in a case before the International Court of Justice and a fifty-year diplomatic freeze between Albania and the UK, and Yugoslavia never conceded that its ships had laid the mines. The three remaining ships were stricken in 1962 and 1963.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:07 UTC on Friday, 3 January 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Albona-class minelayer on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm long-form Ruth.

They visited Dubrovnik, Korcula, Hvar, Split, Zadar, and Istria for a mix of relaxation, food, wine, history, and cultural exploration. Croatia is a lovely country to visit because it is very clean and one of the safest countries to visit in the world. Unfortunately, it is also surprisingly expensive. It isn't the "cheaper" Italy. You can see a full Croatia budget breakdown. Istria was less expensive than other parts of the country. Tamara's itinerary included: 3 nights in Dubrovnik at the Rixos Premium 1 night in Korcula at Aminess Hotel Korcula 3 nights in Hvar at the Beach Bay Hvar Hotel 1 night in Zadar at Hotel Bastion 4 nights in Istria at the Hotel Meneghetti You can find her full Croatia itinerary for couples here. It is best to fly into one city and fly out of another. For example, fly into Dubrovnik and out of Zagreb. To get around in the southern Dalmatian region and islands, you can ferry hop to different islands. To visit the northern part of the country, it is best to rent a car. Another option is to take a small ship cruise or yacht charter to explore the coast and islands that way. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) facces ongoing challenges regarding its backlog of security vulnerability reports. Despite some progress, NIST missed its September 30th deadline to restore processing speeds to pre-February levels, leaving over 17,000 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) unprocessed. This backlog poses significant risks to organizations, as they may remain unaware of vulnerabilities that are actively being exploited. The episode highlights the importance of effective risk management in cybersecurity and encourages organizations to pressure vendors to participate in disclosure programs. The episode also delves into the rising concerns surrounding cloud security threats, which have become the top worry for executives, according to a recent PwC report. The report identifies hack and leak operations, third-party breaches, and ransomware as leading threats, with organizations feeling least prepared to address cloud attacks. Additionally, Microsoft has informed customers about a software bug that affected log data collection for key security products, emphasizing the need for robust security measures and incident response planning.Host Dave Sobel shifts focus to the impact of Broadcom's acquisition of VMware, which has led many users to explore alternatives like OpenStack. The latest version of OpenStack, codenamed Dalmatian, is experiencing a resurgence as former VMware users migrate to its platform, benefiting from improved tools and a stable ecosystem. Meanwhile, Microsoft has announced a 10% price increase for its System Center management tool set for 2025, raising questions about potential challenges for the product in the competitive landscape. Finally, the episode addresses the stagnation in IT leadership diversity, revealing concerning statistics from a recent survey. [Ep 113] This week Lyle and I are in the second biggest city in Croatia – Split. Split has everything you need for the perfect holiday – clear warm water for swimming, idyllic islands, forest walks, history, food and wine and stunning views and for those who like it – a great night life. We share the fun hike we did through a forest to a secluded beach, a speed boat tour to gorgeous Croatian islands, all about the history and amazing architecture of the 1,700 year old Emperor's palace and all the best places to eat and drink throughout the plazas and squares in the old town. We had a jam-packed 4 days in Split and loved every minute and would highly  recommend it as a great spot to stay when in Croatia. Today's episode is about Zadar – now this coastal city isn't as famous or popular as some other parts of Croatia – but it should be.  Zadar has the history, the beaches, the islands, the day trips, the food and wine, city walls, old town, cathedrals and so much more – plus it is cheaper and there are a lot less people – so a perfect spot to explore in Croatia. Also Zadar is known for the famous sea organ, the Greeting to the Sun solar light show, on the stunning promenade which is one of the best spots to enjoy a sunset anywhere in Croatia. We tell you all about the history, some hidden gems, where to find the best swimming spots, which day trips to do and a really fun experience that completely surprised us. Welcome to another engaging episode of the SheClicks Women in Photography Podcast, where we dive deep into the hearts and behind the lenses of women who are defining the photographic industry. This episode features the remarkable Ellie Rothnie, a seasoned wildlife photographer whose journey behind the camera began as a child and has evolved into a career that spans the globe. Ellie, a Canon ambassador, is particularly known for her stunning images of Dalmatian pelicans, but her photographic portfolio covers a wide array of species.Ellie's approach to photography is refreshingly spontaneous. She never sets out with a fixed image in mind, which she believes could lead to frustration. Instead, she keeps a mental wishlist of shots, ready to capture them should the perfect conditions arise. This method allows her the flexibility to be present in the moment and truly engage with her surroundings, whether she's on a day trip or a longer expedition. In conversation with Angela Nicholson, founder of SheClicks and the podcast host, Ellie shares insights from her photographic journey. Her career didn't start in photography; initially, Ellie worked in marketing. However, a pivotal encounter with renowned wildlife photographer Paul Souders in Kenya changed her trajectory. This meeting ignited her passion for wildlife photography, setting her on a path that would see her leave her office job to pursue photography full-time in 2016.Ellie reminisces about her early days with her father, photographing hedgehogs in their garden, a memory that underpins her lifelong fascination with capturing wildlife. Her narrative is a compelling blend of personal anecdotes and professional experiences, illustrating her evolution from a casual photographer to a respected professional in the field.Listeners will find inspiration in how Ellie describes the supportive nature of the SheClicks community, a network that encourages female photographers to pursue their passions and develop their unique styles. The discussion also touches on practical aspects of wildlife photography, from the unpredictability of animal behaviour to the technical challenges posed by different environments. This podcast episode not only showcases Ellie Rothnie's incredible talent and dedication but also illustrates that with passion and perseverance, you can create the career and life you want. So, whether you're a budding photographer or a seasoned pro, tune in for a dose of inspiration and a behind-the-scenes look at the art and soul of wildlife photography as shared by Ellie Rothnie.Remember to subscribe to the SheClicks Women in Photography Podcast on your favourite platform to catch every insightful episode. Danika Bannasch, DVM, PhD returns to the podcast to talk about the Dalmatian Outcross Project. Danika's laboratory found the genetic mutation that was targeted in this outcross, and she had a front row seat to the project's path to acceptance by the AKC and the Dalmatian Club of America. She is also herself a past breeder of Dalmatians. Danika walks us through the genetic, social, and practical implications of high uric acid in Dalmatians, why the outcross was necessary, how it worked, and which populations with different mutations could be helped today by a similar approach (spoiler - one of them is the population of dogs in breeds with high frequency of the chondrodystrophy mutation that we discussed in the previous episode).

Dodie Smith was a phenomenally prolific writer who experienced huge success in her lifetime but is now remembered mainly for her much-loved coming of age novel I Capture the Castle, and her bestselling The Hundred and One Dalmatians.  In this quarter's literary podcast, coinciding with the revival of her play Dear Octopus at the National Theatre, Dodie's biographer Valerie Grove joins the Slightly Foxed Editors and new presenter Rosie Goldsmith at the kitchen table to talk about the life and work of ‘little Dodie Smith', who started writing a journal at the age of 8 and continued every day until she was 90.  Dodie grew up among her mother's family – an experience she brilliantly recalled in Look Back with Love. Dodie's uncles loved the theatre and encouraged her passion for the stage, leading her to train as an actor, with limited success. After years of struggle she turned her hand to writing and soon sold her first play, Autumn Crocus, which launched her career. Success followed, along with fur coats, glittering friends, a Rolls-Royce and the arrival of Dodie's first Dalmatian. Then it was off to America where she and her husband spent the Second World War, joining a literary circle that included Christopher Isherwood and Aldous Huxley. Dodie was terribly homesick and longed to return to home, yet it was her exile that produced I Capture the Castle, a novel through which her nostalgia for England permeates. We end with a round-up of New Year reading recommendations, including a recent biography of the poet John Donne, Super-Infinite by Katherine Rundell, and The Last English King by Julian Rathbone, a historical novel set in the years before the Battle of Hastings.  For episode show notes, please see the Slightly Foxed website.
