The Mothman Festival takes place Sept. 21-22 along Main Street near the Mothman Museum. The annual festival commemorates the 1966 sighting of the Mothman in the TNT area of Point Pleasant. The Mothman Festival will feature a variety of attractions, events and entertainment, including the Mothman Hayride through the TNT area, cosplay opportunities, photo ops with the iconic Mothman Statue, TNT bus tours (which are already sold out for this year), and a virtual Mothman 5K. Phillip Merritt, Vice President and COO of Lakota Software Solutions, and co-founder Aaron Wilson left their jobs at NASA to pursue careers in the growing field of biometric identification in their home state of West Virginia. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Sunday, Sept. 1, 2024. WV small businesses, here's your chance to connect to supplier opportunities at an expo hosted by MAMC and Advantage Valley…federal and state grant programs help landowners protect the Chesapeake Bay Watershed…and … is Mothman real? You be the judge!…on today's daily304. #1 – From REGISTER-HERALD – The Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center and Advantage Valley will present an Industrial Supplier Expo Sept. 26 from 9 a.m. to noon at Valley Park in Hurricane. The expo will connect West Virginia small businesses to supplier opportunities with large industries while providing an opportunity for large companies to shorten their supply chains by sourcing goods and services locally. The event is free but registration is required. Visit MAMC online to sign up. Learn more: https://www.register-herald.com/news/state_region/free-expo-to-connect-w-va-small-businesses-to-supplier-opportunities-with-large-companies/article_2f630c88-5a60-11ef-96e7-63c17565aad5.html #2 – From CBF.ORG – Up in the mountains where West Virginia's Lost River begins, the water trickling though Wilding Woolly Farm is virtually pristine. Owners Hope and Bev Yankey are committed to keeping it that way so native brook trout might one day thrive downstream. The conservation-minded couple turned to Trout Unlimited and its Potomac Headwaters Home Rivers Initiative for help. Brook trout's sensitivity to water temperature and conditions make them an excellent indicator of stream health. That's why the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement made restoring brook trout a goal of the federal-state effort to clean up the Bay and its tributaries. The work can be expensive and complicated. Fortunately, an array of federal and state grant programs exists to help cover the costs and provide technical expertise to landowners, like the Yankeys, who want to protect valuable natural resources on their property. The goal is “to regenerate and let the land come back. The farm provided a living and now it's time to give back,” Hope Yankey said. Most recently, the mythic Mothman creature has received its very own “Unsolved Mysteries” episode on Netflix. But the Mothman was well known long before the popular Netflix reboot came to be. Thanks to “The Mothman Prophecies” movie in 2002 starring Richard Gere and Laura Linney, the phenomenon is now part of pop culture, Wamsley says. Wamsley, who is also the author of “Mothman: Behind the Red Eyes” and co-author of “Mothman: The Facts behind the Legend” shares the Mothman's eerie origin story, which dates back to November 1966 when the Silver Bridge collapsed. Is Mothman real? Get the scoop from the Today show. And make plans to attend the annual Mothman Festival, set for Sept. 21-22 in Point Pleasant! Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Sunday, Oct. 29 Bridge Valley officials tout the success of its dual enrollment program. The WV School of Osteopathic Medicine establishes a program at Fairmont State. And learn about famous art that was inspired by the Mothman legend…on today's daily304. #1 – From METRO NEWS – Bridge Valley Community and Technical College in South Charleston is making some positive strides for a few new efforts to increase and retain enrollment, as well as transform the overall student experience. The dual enrollment program the college has launched this year allows high school students to take a Bridge Valley course while still in high school if there is a teacher at that high school who has a certification allowing them to be an adjunct to Bridge Valley. Bridge Valley President Casey Sacks said there are a total of 34 high school students taking advantage of the dual enrollment in some form or another and from various districts. Sacks said they have been doing work on process mapping around the recruitment and admission teams, as well as a reorganization of student affairs. “I think a lot of this work has been what has driven some of our enrollment increase, because it has led us to a better job of communicating with people who are interested in the college, so it's something that we all recognize that we're going to continue doing moving forward,” Sacks said. Read more: https://wvmetronews.com/2023/10/09/bridge-valley-seeing-success-with-new-dual-enrollment-program-efforts-to-standardize-student-experience/ #2 – From METRO NEWS — The West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine is establishing the Pre-Osteopathic Medicine Program at Fairmont State and Frostburg State universities. The programs are designed to provide a firm foundation for students interested in osteopathic medicine, including the skills and credentials needed to gain admission and ultimately success in osteopathic medicine school, according to WVSOM President James Nemitz. “These are pipeline programs to educate students about what osteopathic medicine is and to provide them with a pathway to help them be successful at achieving acceptance at medical school,” Nemitz said. The WVSOM campus is located in Lewisburg and was founded as the Greenbrier College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1972. Through the Statewide Campus, WVSOM maintains locations throughout the state used by students in the final two years to complete clinical rotations. The institution is nationally recognized for the number of DOs that graduate from WVSOM and work in rural settings. “We're an attractive institution, especially for students who come from rural areas,” Nemitz said. “And we're experts in training those students to be rural medical providers.” Read more: https://wvmetronews.com/2023/10/22/osteopathic-school-of-medicine-inks-deals-with-fairmont-state-frostburg-state/ #3 – From WBOY-TV Clarksburg – The Legend of Mothman has inspired tons of West Virginians and artists, and items from beers to baseball uniforms have been created using the cryptid's image. Mothman is best known for its presence at the Silver Bridge in Point Pleasant in 1967, right before the bridge collapsed, killing 46 people. The legend was widely unknown and forgotten even by the residents of Point Pleasant until John Keel, a prominent journalist and UFOlogist, immortalized the tale in “The Mothman Prophecies” book in 1975. One of the best-known visual art pieces associated with Mothman, the painting “Mothman” by comic book artist Frank Frazetta, was created around 1980. And of course, one of the most recognizable and famous Mothman-inspired artworks is the Bob Roach Mothman Statue in Point Pleasant. The stainless steel figure was created in 2003 and has become a main attraction for the town and a must-see during the Mothman Festival every year. Learn more about the legend -- and the artwork it has inspired -- at the Mothman Museum in Point Pleasant. Steve Ward has been fascinated by the unexplained for over half a century. There were two major events that inspired his interest in the unexplained.Growing up in Michigan, the March 1966 UFO flap occurred virtually in his backyard. The following November a winged humanoid chased two couples down a lonely country road near Point Pleasant, West Virginia. The legend of the Mothman was born.Steve would be chasing the Mothman the rest of his life. Influenced primarily by John Keel and Jacques Vallee, his views on UFOs became unconventional and moved more toward a more paranormal explanation.Steve's main area of research is, what some call "high strangeness" or "window areas" (as Keel dubbed them) where disparate types of paranormal phenomena all seem to occur in the same location, and he believes that studying these paranormally active locations may be the key to understanding what the origin behind these manifestations may be.He has his own podcast called The High Strangeness Factor on the Paranormal UK Radio Network, and is a correspondent on Mack Maloney's Military X-Files, which can be found on that same network. Website: http://www.paukradio.com/Steve currently lives in Point Pleasant, West Virginia & works at The Mothman Museum. He is also writing a book as yet untitled that deals with the underlying patterns that connect different types of Paranormal Phenomena throughout history.Steve returns to Talking Weird to give us a taste of his upcoming presentation at next weekend's Mothman Festival, in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. (Details about the fest at: https://www.mothmanfestival.com/ )He shares his considerable knowledge of the great Fortean writer and researcher John A. Keel. It was Keel's seminal book THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES which introduced awareness of the Mothman to the paranormal and UFO communities.Do not miss this insightful and fascinating conversation with one of the most insightful thinkers in the Fortean field today! This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4602609/advertisement

Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Wednesday, Aug. 2 The Wheeling CVB receives $5 million for its proposed welcome center at Wheeling Inn…the Mothman Festival and the State Fair of WV earn national recognition…and Pipestem Resort's event coordinator is living out her dream job…on today's daily304. #1 – From WHEELING INTELLIGENCER – In buying the former Wheeling Inn hotel at the entrance of Main Street, the Wheeling Convention and Visitors Bureau had a vision for what that property could be in the future. The CVB just received a federal earmark that will put that vision much closer to reality. The CVB has received $5 million in federal funds for its proposed welcome center on that property, one of two Wheeling initiatives that received seven-figure funding boosts in a Senate Appropriations Committee mark-up on a trio of funding bills. On top of the CVB's $5 million, the Community Impact Network Inc. received $1 million to help build a child care center. “I don't think we ever really over-promised about what this project would be,” said Wheeling CVB Executive Director Frank O'Brien. “But as we get this funding stack in play, now we can not over-promise, we can show what we can deliver. The earmark will make the project much more attractive as the CVB applies for other grants and funding. With $5 million in hand, other funding avenues should open up, he added. According to a survey by Family Destinations Guide, the Mothman Festival in Point Pleasant is the most anticipated event in West Virginia and the 55th most anticipated nationwide. The festival celebrates West Virginia's most famous cryptid, Mothman, and takes place every September. Last year, it brought thousands of visitors to Point Pleasant. This year, the event is scheduled for Sept. 16-17. The guide ranked the West Virginia State Fair as the 82nd most-anticipated event of this summer. According to the fair's website, the top things to do during the week-long Lewisburg event are enjoying fair food, carnival rides, concerts and livestock shows. This year, the State Fair of West Virginia will take place Aug. 10-19. Her dream job, however, was to work at Pipestem Resort State Park. After all, she married a local farm boy, one of the Packs from River Ridge Road. Before her path would take her along the country roads of West Virginia, she graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, earning a degree in public relations, marketing and communications. Pack's office now overlooks the beautiful mountains of West Virginia. As she walks the park's facilities with all the ease of a local, the 47-year-old's days are filled with making sure that everything is organized for events taking place at Pipestem. She bounces among helping with the resort's Mountain Serenity Spa, collaborating with the assistant lodge manager, or making sure rooms are great for their guests. Pack credits Governor Jim Justice for the difference his focus on tourism has made in the state parks. “He's made it a thing that people want to go to. Their marketing and tourism with the swings have created a place where people are like, oh, I want to visit all those places where these swings are and take a look at it. It's going to bring a slew of more people into the park. As much as people might know or suspect about the legendary beast, which made its first recorded appearance in 1966, three critical details about its alleged history and habitation are not always considered, says Denny Bellamy, director of the Mason County Convention and Visitors Bureau. For instance, did you know the first Mothman sighting occurred in Clendenin? Gene and cohost Tim Swartz present Bill Kousoulas, whose life-long interest in the paranormal began in the late seventies with the original “Project UFO” series that aired on Sunday night television. In 2003, he was introduced to “The Mothman Prophecies” movie, and it truly changed his life. Since then, he has read nearly all of John Keel's research, as well as the works of related authors including Gray Barker and Andy Colvin. Since 2016, he and his wife Jaci have visited Point Pleasant, West Virginia regularly, and they have become friends with several area residents, including the late Carolin Harris, co-founder of the Mothman Festival. This episode explores not just on the mothman mystery, but the background and culture of Point Pleasant and the details behind the collapse of The Silver Bridge. Bill holds a doctorate in psychology, with a focus on post-traumatic growth. He and Jaci are currently examining the correlations between paranormal experiences and post-traumatic growth.
