This week is.... Well... Its a thing... We see the return of Darron Diamond (just long enough for us to probably be hit with enough copyright issues to ensure we never show up on any platform again) Elsewhere Jim watches Community and the second week of batchelordom causes him to wonder about Emergency Ambulances in a way that might confuse and confound. Elton spends his week becoming an emotional wreck thanks to the ending of several tv shows. Darren watches Code 8 Part 2 and gets excited by Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic, while Lee whiles away a Saturday night watching Sam Rockwell dance and Anna Kendrick turn manic pixie dream girl up to insanely irritating levels in the Neflix show Mr Right. Then after some feedback for last weeks show its on to the main event... A true grenade thrown into our collective laps as we all shout Yo Joe, a lot and realise precisely how many double entendres were being passed before kids eyes in the 80s as we review Eltons pick GI Joe The Movie.. Transformers did it! It kind of worked! Let's do it again! This time without the traumatizing permanence of a main character death! This was the meeting at Hasbro, there's no convincing us otherwise. GI JOE The Movie tried so hard to follow the formula Transformers did and whiffed it. Faked out the Duke death, botched the intro song, and took their best baddie and tanked him into comedy relief. The 80s were wild man. But if you're a fan of GI Joe, this is a god tier movie. The action has a movie budget and the new characters will live rent free in your nostalgia banks until dementia sets in. CAPE Legend, Chris Aballo returns for some solid tanget work. We give it 4 out of 5 action figures you never got for christmas. #comicscartooonsandcraftbeer #comicscartooonsandcraftbeerthepodcast #comics #cartoons #craftbeer #craft #beer #podcast #pod #cccbthep #cccb #ashareduniverse #gijoe #themovie #gijoethemovie #gojoe #duke #cobracommander #cobra #Staytooned --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/comics-cartoons-craftbeer/support
GI Joe: The Movie was meant for big things. Like Transformers and My Little Pony, it would be the property's big screen debut. The failures of those two prevented it from ever getting the chance, though. Even worse, it was meant to serve as a lead-in to the third season of the television show that, ultimately, never happened. Well, it sort of did, but far later and with a different animation studio at the helm. Essentially, it's all a big "what if?", but if you love the toys, then the odds are good you will love GI Joe: The Movie. It introduces a host of new Cobra and Joe characters to enjoy and even builds upon the lore of how Cobra came to be. Cobra-La, as silly and odd as it is, is visually interesting, and its central characters—Golobulus, Pythona, and Nemesis Enforcer—are all extremely cool. Throw in Sgt. Slaughter's Marauders, and you've got yourself a damn good time. Plus, GI Joe: The Movie has a sick opening song set to a battle at the Statue of Liberty! It's a banger, folks. Now, sit back, toast to America with a Space Camper Red Spectra IPA from Boulevard Brewing Co., and start your trek to the Slaughter House! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Chumpzilla, and Bling Blake were once men! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – Fighting for freedom wherever there's trouble! (00:00) Lingering Questions – After a word from our brothers in beer at Hop Nation USA, we discuss our favorite real American heroes. (32:47) The "Yo Joe!" Trivia Challenge – The Double Turn Podcast spars with Beach Head, and then I challenge the field to trivia about the cartoon series. (48:26) Recommendations – We offer our picks for the week and next up: We continue off "Hops and All I Want for Christmas Flops" with the Mars Attacks! RIPD— the Rest in Peace Department—is based upon a comic of the same name. We're not sure about the source material, but the film is just a unabashed Men in Black ripoff. There's the wisecracking rookie who's new to the job; and the crotchety old vet who's stuck with him. Their job is to protect the earth from monstrous spirits, or deados, who walk among them, avoiding their fate in the afterlife. So, let's run this down. Secret government agency? Check. Young, quippy star? Check. Elder curmudgeon? Check. And plot that revolves around said agency protecting the unsuspecting public from a threat they have no idea exists? Check. Thus, RIPD is just a 2013 version of a 1997 film, and in no way is that a compliment. Why? Well, because most of it does not work. And it's central elements are just grifted from better movies. The villain, played hammily by the great Kevin Bacon, is essentially just the budget Gozer from Ghostbusters. With all that in mind, you can probably guess that this flopped and was buried by critics. On a budget estimated to be as high as $154 million, it earned a putrid $78.3 million. It's 12% on Rotten Tomatoes is also as moldy as one of the deados who's been hiding out on earth for too long. Now, sit back, enjoy the after life with a Dead 'N' Dead from Rogue, and stay frosty! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Chumpzilla, and a special guest are hunting down evil Kevin Bacon in the mean streets of Boston! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – They're defending our world one soul at a time! (00:00) Lingering Questions – After a word from our brothers in beer at Hop Nation USA, we all choose our RIPD avatars. (30:37) The "Sounds Like an STD" Trivia Challenge – The Double Turn Podcast handcuffs some deados, and then Chumpzilla challenges the field to trivia about the movie. (49:29) Recommendations – We offer our picks for the week and next up: We kick off "Hops and All I Want for Christmas Flops" with the GI Joe: The Movie! Yo, all you arrestedly developed dorks who listen to this podcast! You ready to re-live some serious childhood shit? This week our April Anniversaries month continues as we celebrate the 35th birthday of GI JOE: THE MOVIE (1987), an animated flick that came out all the way back when we used to feel alive inside. How does it hold up? Probably Snake Eyes gets to do a million cool ninja things, right? Right?? Wait… what the fuck is a Cobra-La?
We were joined by the one-and-only Giles (who is an amazing Gi Joe Artist) for this adventure. The dads get to be Real-'Merican "heroes" with the animated Gi Joe: The Movie. Serpentor forever!
GI Joe: The Movie went straight to video in 1987. It introduced a slew of new fun characters and has one of the best GI Joe vs. Cobra fights ever animated in the first five minutes.
With Chris disabused of some foundational misunderstandings in our earlier G.I. Joe cartoon series episode, Kevin returns to the well for the 1987 animated movie—sadly, not a theatrical release, but a familiar pick on the home video market. What follows is a rollicking, at times macabre tale of soldiers, secrets, spores, and the utter denigration of Cobra Commander, a magnificent man who truly deserved better.
The Dropped Culture fellas bring you another piece of nostalgia with this week's installment, G.I. Joe: The Movie!Brock and Dan break down the movie, discuss the Marvel comic, and their favorite toys from the line. Not familiar with this movie? Huge week for fantasy with the Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and Carnival Row hitting Netflix and Prime respectively. We review them and let you know if Dark Crystal had the same heart and aesthetic of the original and if Carnival Row was able to balance world building and storyline. Then we get to cover one of Greg's favorite after school cartoons, GI Joe. GI Joe the Movie never made it to theaters, but was split up over several days on network TV, as well as video release. It's almost as crazy as Robo Vampire, but oddly more coherent, despite featuring a guy turning into a snake and another dude in a flowered shirt riding incorrectly on a helicopter. And of course our question of the week: What are the top 5 best celebrity cameos in cartoons as themselves? In this episode of Hip Squared, we celebrate our Independence Day with two All-American entries into pop-culture. First, John talks about GI Joe: The Movie (1987). This animated feature length film is about America’s top fighting force in their struggle against Cobra and a secret reptilian civilization bent on taking over the world. As a spectacle, this movie is over the top sci-fi fun, and an excellent example of 1980s animation. Then Troy talks about Hello, Dolly!, an archetypal specimen of the American musical. First performed on Broadway in 1964, this musical comedy is about a matchmaker named Dolly who tries to find a match for a lonely “half a millionaire”. Written by Jerry Herman and Michael Stewart, Hello, Dolly! was ground-breaking for its songs that actually move the plot forward, laying the groundwork for story-based musicals that were to follow. Troy recently attended a performance starring Betty Buckley, who also played the role of the gym teacher in the movie Carrie. Produced by Maplex Monk. Thanks for listening to Hip Squared! The finale of the original GI Joe cartoon is infamous for several reasons, but damn if the opening sequence isn’t awesome. GI Joe: The Movie starts strong, and then just kinda happens at you. Rounding out this trio of Hasbro toy-based films put out by Marvel/Sunbow in the mid-1980s, "GI Joe: The Movie" has the dishonorable distinction of being funneled straight to video and subsequently syndicated on television due to the lack of success for the "Transformers" and "My Little Pony" movies at the box office the year before. But does that mean it's a bad film? Well, some might argue yes, others hell no, and many more fall under the category of loving it because it embraces its flaws and plays them up to maximum entertainment. Don Johnson and Burgess Meredith provide voices for this completely off-the-hook action-adventure-science fiction extravaganza that serves as a precursor to the dumb-but-fun action blockbusters people either love or love to hate from the 1990s.
We love G.I. Joe. So we talk about our memories growing up collecting toys and comics. Brad gives us a little history of Ardbeg 10 scotch, and Brian creates a fantastic Cobra inspired cocktail that was a bit strong to try and remember during recording. Part of an ongoing series – the Needless Things Irregulars gather in the Phantom Zone to provide their own unique commentary on classic genre films! This month’s movie is the 1987 animated feature, GI Joe: The Movie. The Irregulars are joined by special guest Noel from GI Joe cosplay group The Finest’s Southern Command. Thirty years ago Hasbro planned to release an animated theatrical GI Joe feature, but those plans were derailed by the failure of similar Transformers and My Little Pony releases. The feature – which had completed production – was instead moved to a VHS release and eventually made part of the regular animated series’ syndication as a standard five-part miniseries. Over the years many elements of the feature have come under fire, from character selection to continuity to the introduction of the feature’s villains, Cobra-La. Listen in as Dave, Arian, Ryan, and Noel revisit this landmark in GI Joe history to discuss its worthiness! Be sure to join the Needless Things Podcast Facebook Group and get in on the conversation for this week’s episode! Before discussing GI Joe: The Movie, Mike puts the franchise into context. Specifically, he examines why it was needed in the 1980s, and what children of a certain age took away from it. Then he gets into the movie, which is flawed to the core but so much fun! Also, a mind-blowing discovery is made: this isn't a GI Joe cartoon, but something else entirely.
