Translating a journalist's gut instinct into code—is it possible? In Norway, iTromsø—a long-standing regional newspaper known for its investigative journalism and deep local coverage—has found a way.Their AI system, DJINN (Data Journalism Interface for News Gathering and Notification), acts like an experienced beat reporter, scanning hundreds of municipal documents and surfacing the most newsworthy leads. The impact? In their first week using DJINN, summer interns fresh out of journalism school produced five front-page stories—on a beat that usually takes years to master.In this episode of Newsroom Robots, I spoke to Rune Ytreberg and Lars Adrian Giske about iTromsø's structured approach to AI-driven reporting and how they built tools that strengthen their local journalism.Rune leads iTromsø's data journalism lab, where he has been developing AI-driven editorial solutions for 70 local newspapers within the Polaris Media Group since 2020. And Lars is the Head of AI at iTromsø and led the development of DJINN. Frida Ånnevik er musiker og låtskriver. Hun er veldig redd for å angre, og blir da ganske omstendelig og treig, fordi hun må tenke seg veldig nøye om. Vi snakker bl.a. om å ha ramlet på isen og ødelagt armen, som selvfølgelig har gått veldig utover gitarspillingen, hvor viktig brodder er, om å kunne se situasjonen fra utsiden når man står og fremfører noe på en scene, at det tok lang tid for å få til å konsentrere seg om låtskriving under pandemien, og at hennes konsert var den første som ble avlyst på grunn av covid i Norge, men at hun etter hvert fikk spilt flere konserter enn noen gang, og at gulroten i enden var å spille inn et nytt album på Giske, at hun må lage sangene helt ferdig på demo-stadiet og faktisk ikke ha noe liggende igjen i den kreative skuffen, å være veldig opptatt av prosessen bak en stor konsert, men ikke hige etter å fylle Spektrum selv, men glede seg veldig til å spille i Operaen og skape et fint rom der, at mye musikk i dag handler mer om avvikling enn fremføring, å alltid lære av en opptreden og ikke gjøre alt på automatikk og en god del om å jobbe i serviceyrket og klare å lage en bra dag for kundene, at neste karrieresteg må nok være noe «on ice» og at det er litt sørgelig at noen låter aldri blir spilt live.Programleder: Sivert MoeSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/anger. In my spare time I like to go hiking or skiing in the mountains and fjords around here.”Here are some of the key topics we discuss:· Henning believes that the natural surroundings of an island contribute to the creative process. For example, he learned Peter Gabriel's studio was designed with creativity in mind, as the flowing water outside provides inspiration.· As the owner of the studio, he explains how the studio was built and how it is different from other studios in New York and London.· Why the artists are drawn to the studio's setting and equipment. They have kept up with the latest technology by installing a Dolby Atmos system in their studio.· Henning describes how their music is influenced by the environment, ranging in styles which include sixties pop, German hip-hop, jazz, and even meditation sounds.· “We had one of my favorite Norwegian bands called Motorcycle which I've been a fan of since I was a kid. I was finally asked to work with them as an engineer a couple of years ago. Their guitar player lives in Trondheim, a Norwegian city. He decided that he is not going to bring any guitars or any pedals or anything. He's just going to use what's in the studio because the different instruments will inspire him to play something different than a normal would. So we also try to have a few weird instruments lying around, like strategically placed around the studio.
