We've pursued the wrong priorities, put our hope in personalities, and elevated popularity over spiritual maturity. And it's not just the Church that's lost; we are too. Pastoring has always been a vocation of great responsibility, yet the expectations placed on pastors today have grown increasingly complex. From preaching and shepherding to being organizational leaders, cultural commentators, and trauma-informed counselors, the demands can stack up, making the work feel impossible. Add to this the challenge of navigating a rapidly changing cultural and technological landscape, and it's no wonder so many pastors wrestle with questions of calling, capacity, and resilience. But amidst these challenges the ancient wisdom of the church and the gift of pastoral community offer a way forward. In this episode of The Pastorate, we sit down with Glenn Packiam, Lead Pastor of Rockharbor Church in Costa Mesa, California, to explore the depth and complexity of pastoral ministry in today's world. Glenn brings his unique perspective as a pastor, offering insights on how to remain grounded in the midst of ministry's ever-growing demands. Drawing from both his own experiences, Glenn unpacks practical strategies for navigating the weight of expectations placed on pastors, cultivating resilience through ancient spiritual practices, and fostering healthy team dynamics with a focus on self-awareness. Whether you're a seasoned leader or new to pastoral ministry, this conversation will encourage and equip you to lead with renewed clarity and grace. Our conversation with Glenn Packiam covers: The impossible expectations placed on pastors today and how to navigate them with grace. The timeless wisdom of the church, including the value of ancient practices like the prayer of Examen.  The power that self-awareness and healthy team has to sustain longevity in ministry.  We're thankful you've joined us on The Pastorate today, bless you as you listen. As many of you know, we have been searching for a new Lead Pastor since February 2021. Through an extensive search process led by a diverse volunteer team, countless hours of prayer and fasting for wisdom and discernment, the Lord has made clear who the next leader of Rockharbor would be. In early July, the search team alongside the elder board unanimously invited Glenn Packiam to become our Lead Pastor, which he has graciously accepted alongside his wife Holly and their four kids Sophia, Norah, Jonas, and Jane. For the past 22 years Glenn has served at New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado, first as a worship pastor and, most recently, as Lead Pastor of the Downtown congregation. He has become a respected theologian, receiving his doctorate from Durham University in the UK. As a Senior Fellow at Barna Group, Glenn is a frontrunner on the intersection of research and ministry, guiding pastors to navigate our current cultural moment. He is an accomplished musician and author whose primary aim is building up the Church in following Jesus. He has written several books, the most recent being The Resilient Pastor, aimed to encourage and develop longevity in pastors. We could not be more excited about what God has done in bringing the Packiam family to Rockharbor and about what God will do under Glenn's leadership in the future. This has been a long-awaited announcement, and we are grateful for your prayers and patience, the hard work of the search committee, and the faithfulness of God. Please continue to pray for the Packiams as they transition. Pray for Todd, Kit, and the rest of the staff as they continue to lead into the fall. And above all else praise God! He has answered our prayers. He is always faithful.

A recent article in the Atlantic reveals how the political polarization in the United States is now tearing evangelical churches apart. And Marvin Olasky, the former editor of World Magazine, writes about the dramatic change he witnessed among evangelicals over his long career. Drawing from thousands of letters he received, Olasky concludes, “The Republican party platform has become more important than the gospel for many who identify as evangelicals.” Special guest co-host Drew Dyck joins Phil and Skye to discuss the articles. Then, president of Barna research, David Kinnaman, is back with more stats to unpack. With a record number of pastors thinking seriously about quitting, and political polarization listed among the top reasons, Kinnaman says the church is facing a crisis of discipleship. He believes we need a political theology that's rooted in the gospel rather than partisanship. But is it too late? Also this week, fear over climate change is making progressives question the morality of having kids. And, South Korean college students are flush with cash. How do we remain confident in our calling in ministry, and sustain resiliency through the difficult challenges that we often face? In this week's conversation on FrontStage BackStage, host Jason Daye is joined by Glenn Packiam, pastor and author of The Resilient Pastor, as they explore the hope that carries us through these challenging times.Dig deeper into this conversation: Find the free Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide, all resource links, and more at http://PastorServe.org/networkSome key takeaways from this conversation:Glenn Packiam on the change in expectations on pastors: “It's just that these expectations have not been interchangeable, they have not replaced one another. They've just sort of stacked. And so now the weight of pressure of what we're supposed to be as a pastor, it's untenable. There is no human being that can be all of those things.”Glenn Packiam on what sustains us in our ministry:  “The only thing that can sustain us is not Do you love the church? Or do you love the mission? Or do you love a move of God? Or do you love miracles? Or do you want to see revival? It's Peter, do you love me? And I think for all of us as pastors, the only way we can have a sort of sustained journey with the Lord in ministry is to return and recalibrate to our first love.”Glenn Packiam on God's grace and our work: “That's the grace that is being given to us. The grace to be able to be steadfast, to be able to be resilient, is the work of the Holy Spirit in us reminding us that if Jesus Christ is risen from the dead, man, our work is not going to be in vain.”Glenn Packiam on balance in ministry: “And if we understand our calling that we are to be with him, then that's not in contradiction to loving our families or other rhythms in our life. And so if at the very center of our lives is the church, well, that is going to displace other things. But if at the very center is,  I am called to Jesus Himself, and because I'm following Jesus, yes, I will love the church, but also because of Jesus, I'm going to love my spouse, I'm going to love my children, I'm going to cultivate good friendships.”Looking to dig more deeply into this topic and conversation? FrontStage BackStage is much more than another church leadership show, it is a complete resource to help you and your ministry leaders grow. Every week we go the extra mile and create a free toolkit so you and your ministry team can dive deeper into the topic that is discussed.Visit http://PastorServe.org/network to find the entire Weekly Toolkit, including the Ministry Leaders Growth Guide (Our team pulls key insights and quotes from every conversation with our amazing guests. Then, in response to last week's interview, Phil unpacks how our modern belief in human goodness explains the rise in authoritarianism and populism. And, why are U.S. Christians supporting the “Freedom Convoy” in Canada? A recent study from Barna found more than one-third of pastors have seriously considered leaving ministry in the last year.
