Republicans yesterday were able to uphold Governor Dunleavy's appropriate veto of HB69, the massive education funding increase passed by Democrat-led majorities in both Legislative chambers that included absolutely no measurable outcomes to ensure that public school students would benefit.Today, I have the pleasure of chatting with Senator Mike Shower, a MatSu legislator who leads the Alaska Senate Republican Caucus. Shower, a long time friend of AFC and one who emanates common sense, is not falling for the mainstream media line that the veto and subsequent vote by the Legislature to uphold it, pits pro-education policy makers against those who don't want our public schools to succeed. And you shouldn't either.I hope you can tune in.Support the show
Send us a textFormer Alaska State Senator and Iraq war veteran Josh Revak was born and raised in Minnesota. While serving in the Army in the early 2000s, a mortar blast in Iraq blew a quarter-sized hole through the back of his foot. He then got his first job in politics back in Minnesota working on John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign. Then, while visiting the Alaska family of a fellow soldier who had been killed in Iraq, Revak met Congressman Don Young's staff who suggested he apply for a job in the congressman's office. After 8 years working for Don Young and Senator Dan Sullivan, Revak ran for the Alaska State House in 2018 defeating incumbent Charisse Millett in the Republican primary and was elected to represent the Abbott Loop Area of Anchorage. When State Senator Chris Birch suddenly passed away, Revak was appointed to that seat by Governor Dunleavy. In 2022 with the sudden death of Don Young, Revak ran for that seat with the endorsement of Don Young's widow. After Mary Peltola ultimately won the seat, Revak went to work for Peltola's office. He is now lobbying for the drone program at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.Watch Josh Revak perform on Governor Mike Huckabee's Fox talk show in 2010 here.

Donna Arduin is most well known in Alaska as Governor Dunleavy's 2019 director of the Office of Management and Budget. She is currently staff for representative Ben Carpenter of Nikiski. As Dunleavy's OMB Director, she advised major cuts to the state budget including eliminating the state ferry system, dismantling the University of Alaska, and drastically cutting funding for the K-12 public education system. Prior to her work in Alaska, she earned a reputation as a "budget fixer" for her work with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in California, Governors Jeb Bush and Rick Scott in Florida, Governor George Pataki in New York, and most recently with Governor Greg Gianforte in Montana. She is the President of the consulting firm Ardoin, Laffer Moore, which she founded 20 years ago with the man known as the father of supply side economics, Arthur Laffer. In this pivotal episode of "American Potential," host Jeff Crank is joined by Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy and Nagruk Harcharek president of Voice of the Arctic Iñupiat to discuss the substantial federal obstacles hampering oil and gas development in Alaska. They delve into the Biden administration's contentious decision to cancel oil and gas leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, illuminating how these actions not only undermine Alaska's economic framework but also significantly impact the livelihoods and cultural heritage of Native Alaskan communities. Governor Dunleavy outlines the dire economic consequences of such federal overreach, emphasizing the critical dependence of the state's budget and public services on oil revenue. Nagruk Harcharek presents the perspective of the Arctic Iñupiat, underscoring the indispensable role of resource development in ensuring the prosperity and sustainability of North Slope communities. He critiques the federal government's failure to engage meaningfully with Native Alaskan voices, highlighting a disconnect between the administration's professed commitment to tribal consultation and its policy decisions. The discussion also explores the broader national implications of stifling domestic energy production, including increased reliance on foreign oil and the strategic vulnerabilities it creates. This episode serves as a clarion call for a reevaluation of federal policies affecting Alaska's oil and gas sector. Through their insightful conversation, Crank, Dunleavy, and Harcharek advocate for a balanced approach that respects Alaska's rights, promotes energy independence, and genuinely considers the input of Native Alaskan communities. Their dialogue sheds light on the complex interplay between environmental stewardship, economic necessity, and cultural preservation, urging policymakers and the public alike to recognize the stakes involved in Alaska's ongoing battle against federal overreach. It is our honor to welcome back Governor Mike Dunleavy of Alaska for today's session. We hosted the Governor on COBT in July of 2022 and had much to cover since our last visit. Gov. Dunleavy moved to Alaska in 1983 and quickly became a proud local serving as a teacher, principal, and superintendent in Arctic communities before his 5-year term as a State Senator from 2013 – 2018. He was elected Governor in 2018 and was re-elected last November. We were thrilled to visit with the Governor to discuss energy in Alaska and preview the Alaska Sustainable Energy Conference taking place next week in Anchorage with an exciting lineup of speakers and topics. We begin the discussion with an update from Gov. Dunleavy on the current energy outlook in Alaska and the state's unique conditions that allow for a plethora of energy types including oil, gas, biomass, nuclear, coal, geothermal, on and offshore wind, tidal, and solar. Gov. Dunleavy shares his perspective on the Willow project and the state's support for energy production, including LNG and Alaska's relationships with Asia. We then discuss the Sustainable Energy Conference and some of the keynote speakers including Dr. Dan Yergin, Vice Chairman of S&P Global, Rahm Emanuel, United States Ambassador to Japan, and David Turk, Deputy Secretary, U.S. Department of Energy to name a few. The conference will examine the future of energy in Alaska and around the world, the intersection of geopolitical upheaval with food and energy security, advancements in renewable power, transmission, storage, and more. We also touch on geopolitics and security, minerals and mining, Alaska's nuclear adoption, labor markets, the opportunities in Alaska, and the all-in approach the state is taking. We ended with Gov. Dunleavy's thoughts for what the world looks like in 2024 with the next US Presidential election. It was wonderful to visit with the Governor and hear the progress Alaska has made over the past ten months. Mike Bradley kicked us off and highlighted that over the last couple of weeks, bond, commodity, and equity markets have been directionless due to the U.S. debt ceiling showdown. He further indicated that a favorable debt ceiling resolution could result in some outsized gains but should prove transitory. He also pointed out talks this week for a potential U.S. SPR crude oil purchase in August (3 million sour barrels) which is peanuts compared to the 270 million barrels that have been sold from the SPR over the last two years. Mike also highlighted the recent natural gas rally and the potential for additional Haynesville rig drops by end of summer. He concluded the conversation by highlighting ongoing midstream consolidation activity. Jeff Tillery added to Mike's midstream comments with an observation on diversifying assets in North America as they mature. Brett Rampal also joined and peppered in his nuclear perspective in the discussion. We want to thank the Governor for his time. If every Governor knew energy as well as Governor Dunleavy, the country would be a better place. We hope you enjoy the discussion as much as we did and consider attending the Alaska Sustainable Energy Conference!

Maybe it's because he's from Texas where quiet confidence reigns.Maybe it's because he's a Principal in Golovin, an Inupiat Eskimo village on the Seward Peninsula where respect for elders is generational.Whatever the reason, Alan Davis, Principal of Martin L. Olson School in Golovin, has given a desperately needed boost of confidence in the public school system by recently coming out in support of Governor Dunleavy's parental rights bill, HB 105.Public school teachers, counselors, administrators and Board members have been relentless in advancing sexual orientation and gender confusion ideologies and very purposefully withholding that from parents. HB105, that shouldn't even be necessary, would require public schools to obtain parental consent before they teach anything related to sex, and those classes could not be taught to kids in K-3rd grade. The bill also mandates that parents must be informed if kids begin identifying as a different gender in school. Finally, the legislation creates safe locker rooms and restrooms by separating those facilities by biological sex.Alan Davis, who joins me on "I'm Glad You Said That" today, is one of, if not the only public school employee, who has stepped forward to support this eminently reasonable legislation. Unbelievably, a large percentage of those opposing HB105 have been teachers and counselors who are actually standing against parents.Principal Davis, his letter is shown below, should be commended and should inspire what is hopefully a large number of reasonably minded, parent-focused public school employees to also step up and take a stand !Hope you can tune in todaySupport the show

Today we had the honor of hosting Governor Mike Dunleavy of Alaska for an exciting and informational episode. Governor Dunleavy is a Scranton, PA native and as a young man moved to Alaska in 1983 where he had an extensive career in education serving as a teacher, principal, and superintendent before his 5-year term as an Alaska State Senator from 2013-2018. He became Governor in 2018 and is up for re-election this November. We had a fantastic time visiting and walked away from the discussion impressed with Gov. Dunleavy and his passion to advance the state's energy opportunities. Gov. Dunleavy helped frame our discussion with background and history of the state, the state's unique features, history of their energy production, difficulties with federal regulations, the proposed pipeline from the North Slope to Nikiski and how it would impact the state's LNG exports to Asia, the Native American and US veteran populations of Alaska, and information on Alaska's energy transition minerals. We also cover relations with Russia and the full spectrum of energy available in Alaska from hydro, nuclear, geothermal, wind, solar, and tidal, to oil and natural gas. Overall, we learned a lot about the state (which Gov. Dunleavy thinks is the "best kept secret in the United States of America") and have a better appreciation for their contributions and challenges. We can't thank the Governor enough for his time and consideration and are looking forward to Veriten's future visit to Alaska! The Veriten team quickly hit a few key points to start the show: Mike Bradley highlighted interesting headlines of the week including OPEC's 2023 Market Outlook and ERCOT's struggles with the heat, and also covered weekly equity and commodity performance. Colin Fenton provided a macro market outlook and warned that coastline states that skipped the 2014/2016 slump may see areas of recession, and that unfortunately inflation peaking does not mean inflation is over. Thanks to you all. We hope you enjoy and that you learn something new about Alaska!
We discuss how the pro-life political movement is a fraud. Interview with Scott Kendall on women in Governor Dunleavy and Kevin Clarkson's perfect world. Maia Nolan-Partnow has some thoughts on Roe V Wade. Mayor Dave Bronson got elected promising to fix Anchorage's homeless problem and is failing dramatically. We share our summer reading list.
