We’ll learn about the history of angels and talk about angels in pop culture. We’ll cover the careers of some of the heaviest hitters yet as we discuss Whitney Houston, Denzel Washington, and Penny Marshall! Jess is an archivist/librarian and an avid reader and videogamer. She is also the co-host of Bawdy Literati, a podcast that explores "fiction that fucks". She has been reading romance/erotica since she was a tween and considers romance/erotica her favorite genre to read. While Jess doesn't lean into the romcom genre when watching movies, as she is more of a Action/Sci Fi fan with The Day After Tomorrow (2004) and Independence Day (1996) as some of her favorites, she does enjoy some romcoms including You've Got Mail (1998), The Wedding Singer (1998), and Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008) as some of her favorite romcoms of all time. She has three cats and has been with her partner for 25 years. Asa is a librarian and textile artist. She is also the co-host of Bawdy Literati, the podcast that discusses "fiction that fucks." She has always been a big movie fan, of all genres, but loves the whimsical, lighthearted nature that the romcom genre often brings. Her favorite movie of all time is Woman on Top (2000), an unusual romcom that brings the magic of cooking, bossa nova, and the spirit of Brazil to the genre. The inspiration to begin For me, these Films R the Juice came from listening to The Rewatchables and The Cine-Files podcasts and also returning to the cinema after the Covid lockdowns. These things reignited Steve’s passion for film and made him think, 'I’m going to give that a try.' The first 7 episodes of For me, these Films R the Juice are solo efforts by Steve, focusing on deep dives into some of his favourite and most seen films such as Pulp Fiction, Shaun of the Dead & No Country For Old Men. Episode 8 onwards features a guest with whom he discusses a film or film topic including a Tom Cruise Film Draft with Edward from That 80s Movie Podcast and Wayne from Recasted 2.0. Steve was a big cinephile from his mid teens to early twenties. During this period he started to gain a deeper knowledge of and appreciation for film acting, film making and film history by taking an A-Level in Film Studies and subscribing to Empire Magazine. These two avenues, along with sharing the same passion for film with two of his best friends, made Steve become fascinated by certain actors (Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Ed Norton, Ray Liotta) directors (Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppolla, Oliver Stone) and film history (the book ‘Easy Riders, Raging Bulls’, Film Documentaries and DVD ‘Making Ofs’). Episode 9 of the podcast in which Steve is joined by the close friends mentioned, Dan and Dean, to compare Al Pacino and Robert De Niro really conveys their joint love of film at that time. Outside of podcasting Steve has recently started a new job within his local hospital’s Cancer Support department which he is enjoying and finding very rewarding. Other than work, podcasting, watching films, and getting to his local driving range whenever he can, Steve enjoys spending time with his wife and t

This week on Every Rom Com we’re discussing the music and the misery of “High Fidelity” with Courtney E. Smith, author of the 2011 book Record Collecting For Girls and host of the podcast “Songs in The Key Of Death.” We discuss John Cusack and Nick Hornby, memorable breakups on and off screen, and a whole lot of music! Courtney gives her picks for the top 5 rom com soundtracks, lays out some mixtape-making wisdom, and reviews your picks for best breakup songs! It’s an intersection of music nerds, film nerds, and feminists that you won’t want to miss! 0:00-16:06 Introducing Our Guest, Courtney E. Smith, Author Of Record Collecting For Girls; Courtney’s Top 5 Romantic Comedy Soundtracks Follow our guest Courtney E. Smith on Twitter @courtneyesmith or on Instagram @thecourtneyesmith. And be sure to check out her podcast, Songs in the Key of Death anywhere you get your podcasts! Courtney E. Smith is the author of RECORD COLLECTING FOR GIRLS (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2011), a music critic, and a recovering music industry gatekeeper. She began her career at MTV, quickly moving into the music programming department and yelling at everyone about indie rock until they listened and agreed to play it. She feels very lucky that worked out. While at MTV, Smith was the label rep for all the indie record labels in the known universe and programmed the only national indie rock video show, MTV2’s Subterranean. She also co-helmed the music programming for mtvU, the college music network, as well as creating their video award show, The Woodies. Since transitioning to music journalism and criticism, Smith has since been published by Billboard, Pitchfork, Salon, No Depression, Yahoo, and in a screed for Lenny Letter about the Rock Hall’s lack of women nominees that launched trend pieces in the New York Times and People, and caused Steve Miller, a curmudgeon rock star, to yell at the whole place that they needed to stop ignoring women. The trend has continued at every induction ceremony since. She’s been an editor and staff writer for CBS’s Radio.com and at Refinery29. At the latter, she made so much noise covering the Grammys and their mishandling of #MeToo and representation for women that the Recording Academy hired a crisis PR firm to handle her. Her coverage of the lack of representation for women at country radio caused tongues to wag all over Nashville and earned her a spot contributing an essay to WOMAN WALK THE LINE (UT Press, 2017). Presently, she’s the editor of Eater Dallas and yes, she will give you a food recommendation on request. Smith is the host and writer of the po

Asa is also big into movies of all genres, considers the rom com genre to be underrated, and is tired of people referring to them as “chick flicks.” You can find Bawdy Literati at @bawdyliterati on Instagram, and listen on Spotify or Apple Podcasts! This week on Every Rom Com, Jen and Cybil take on the 2005 lesbian love story, “Imagine Me & You”, which begins at a wedding with a fateful glance between the bride and the wedding florist. Though Jen and Cybil find the film lacking in both chemistry and research on florists, the episode features hilarious commentary, a discussion on love at first sight including a strange never-before-told story from Jen, and research on flower meanings that writer/director Ol Parker seems to have neglected. We finish up with a discussion of female sexual fluidity and a collection of double feature recommendations with love stories that will actually satisfy during Pride month and all year long. 0:00-8:02 Introduction, What Are Your Favorite Flowers? 8:02-17:49 TRAILER, Basic Info, Interesting Facts, General Opinion https://www.bbc.co.uk/films/ukmovies/newmovies/comingsoon/click_set.shtml 17:49-24:13 Cast & Crew In-Depth For More Information On Matthew Goode, Every Rom Com, Episode 9 On “Leap Year”: https://www.everyromcom.com/podcast-1/episode/1b1588d7/every-rom-com-9-leap-year 24:13-35:17 The Wedding And Reception, Introduction To The Characters 35:17-53:13 Rachel Befriends Luce, Theories Of Love, Do You Believe In Love At First Sight?, Jen’s Kind Of Weird New Age Love Story 53:13-1:01:52 Coop and Luce Dinner, The Ethics Of Cheating, The Grocery Store Scene 1:01:52-1:12:14 Rachel’s Internal Struggle, H’s School Presentation, Rachel And Luce’s (Lack Of) Chemistry, Luce And H Scene 1:12:14-1:32:21 The Football Game And After, The Flower Shop, Flower Meanings, The Outdoor Sex Scene Flower Meanings: https://www.almanac.com/flower-meanings-language-flowers https://www.floraqueen.com/blog/the-tiger-lily-meaning-and-interesting-facts-about-the-flower https://www.flowermeaning.com/lilly-flower-meaning/ https://www.brides.com/gallery/wedding-flower-meanings#:~:text=While%20a%20red%20rose%20symbolizes,popular%20flowers%20used%20in%20weddings. This week on Every Rom Com we go to the dark-ish side of the rom com genre and join Julia Roberts on her mission to break up a wedding in “My Best Friend’s Wedding.” On the way we explore the gay best friend trope via perhaps the most-beloved gay best friend in rom com history; we mostly succeed at a wedding music trivia challenge; and we talk about an epic karaoke scene with Ed Cunard from the karaoke podcast, The Greatest Song Ever Sung (Poorly). This week on Every Rom Com we’re wrapping up the Gen-X Rom Com Series with what might be director Kevin Smith’s greatest film - “Chasing Amy.” Serena and Jen are joined by Ed Cunard, co-host of the must-listen karaoke podcast, The Greatest Song Ever Sung (Poorly), who shares his knowledge of comic book culture and even breaks out into a bit of (not-poor) singing. And as usual we dive into the making of the film, discuss the cast and crew, and give our opinions on the movie’s portrayal of sexuality and relationships. 0:00-9:45 Introduction, Introducing Ed Cunard, co-host of The Greatest Song Ever Sung Poorly Information on Guest Host, Ed Cunard: Co-host, editor and chief researcher for the podcast "The Greatest Song Ever Sung (Poorly)," Ed Cunard comes by his catholic knowledge of all things music honestly--he's oddly two degrees of separation away from a lot of old school musicians through his grandparents. The biggest gap in his musical education is how to actually make music that doesn't sound awful. When not singing in bars, he works as Director of Operations for a sales company, which almost makes sense with all those English degrees he's still paying for. He lives in the middle of nowhere with nine cats and two dogs. This week on Every Rom Com we enter the grunge era, as we revisit Seattle with Cameron Crowe’s “Singles.” It was a much different time for dating, and Sophia and Jen wax nostalgic on the old tech they did use (landlines and answering machines) and marvel at the wacky tech they never got a chance to use (video dating!!!) This week on Every Rom Com we’re continuing our Christmas Rom Com series with the 2006 Queen Latifah movie “Last Holiday.” We’ll talk about the hotel and spa town that served as the film’s location; explore the careers of director Wayne Wang, Queen Latifah, and L.L. Ishtar has lived a rich and strange life. The main catalyst is perhaps the NDE experienced at age 13, which over the next few years contributed to a serious interest in spirituality, the adoption of various spiritual practices, and entering an ashram at age 18. While the sense of inner wholeness has been the focus, “things rich and strange” came along for the ride in the form of precognitive seeing, telepathy, ghosts, lucid dreams, and the wild and improbable manifestation of desires. For Ishtar, synchronicity is a very real happening beyond the explanatory framework of chance. These days, Ishtar lives in Portugal with Luna, teaching meditation and providing astrological readings.
