This week we are talking hats. What's Fiona's favourite London hat? Celebrating National Hat day, and giving you time to prepare for London Hat Week. We've got a bit of a beaver update to start us off, and sadly their ancestors make an appearance in one of London's notable hats - The Beaverskin or Muscovy Hat of the Swordbearer of the City of London. The hat pocket plays an important part in one of the solemn and important (or, bonkers, depending on your point of view) City ceremonies. We can't talk hats without visiting the hatters, and where better than Lock and Co. It would be quicker to list the stylish celebrities who haven't had a hat made there, than those that have. What do you get if you cross a homburg and a Bowler? and bonus points if you know who might be wearing one. And where oh where was London's most unlikely hat wearer. Plus mercury madness, Nelson's Olympic flame, and what do Chaplin and Churchill have in common? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The runway tunnel finally opened! It felt like quite a moment on GBC Television in the early hours of Friday morning - ‘ambientaso' is how Jonathan Scott summed it up - from Kingsway - in the live broadcast. How has it worked in practice? Gibraltar Today had an update on rush hour from the police, from Beach View Terraces residents and GBC reporter Jonathan Sacramento was in the studio. The Federation of Small Businesses has published a wish-list ahead of the general election. Owen Smith told us the GFSB wants to make Gibraltar an attractive place to do business, while keeping costs and bureaucracy down as much as possible. And, we celebrated ‘Wear a hat day' to raise awareness and funds for research into brain tumours. James and Fabiola Culatto joined us and discussed their memories of their brother Rory.Thank you for listening to the Gibraltar Today podcast. Hosted on Acast. Welcome to January 15th, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate causing a stir and the wise guys of bagel making. On this day in 1797, John Hetherington—a London hat maker—stepped out into the street wearing his latest creation. A top hat. According to reports, Mr. Hetherington “appeared on the public highway wearing upon his head what he called a silk hat (which was of a shiny lustre and calculated to frighten timid people)”… Officers of the Crown stated that several women fainted at the unusual sight, while children screamed, dogs yelped and a boy was thrown down by the crowd…and had his right arm broken.” Mr. Hetherington was brought up on charges of inciting a riot and fined 500 Pounds. On National Hat Day, put on your favorite hat and try not to cause a stir. The bagel makers of New York in the early 1900s were nothing to mess with. Referred to as the bagel mafia, these men conducted business in Yiddish to keep their trade secrets a secret. Bagel making was hard labor and the conditions of most shops were actually quite appalling, but in the 1930s Bagel Bakers Local 338 Union changed everything. These elite bakers tested their benchmen for 6 months until they could roll 832 bagels per hour. And, when workers went on strike in the 1950s, all but 2 bagel bakeries in Manhattan had to close, leading to what was called a Bagel Famine. Today bagels can be found almost anywhere thanks to the Lender family who automated the process, but on National Bagel Day, we celebrate the tough guys who made these chewy wonders part of the American Dream. Welcome to September 15th, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a seasonal topper and wagging your pasta tongue. Not so long ago people wouldn't dare to be seen without a hat on in public. More than a fashion statement, hats have identified our status, our military rank and even our religion. Think Quaker hat or the stovepipe kind worn by President Lincoln. These days, most people love the vintage styles of a pork pie or bowler. Be bold enough to try something new and you may never have a bad hair day again! On National Felt Hat Day, sport your own style, whether you're mad as a hatter or conservative as a cloche. Why are there so many different pasta shapes? You might think it's silly to make a fuss over such things, but to the Italians everything has a reason. Some pastas like fettucine are flat and broad and made for holding cream sauce. Others like spaghetti are rounded in shape and perfect for tomato based sauces. And the best of both worlds is the elliptical shape of linguini, which means little tongues. For the people of Genoa, linguini is a 400 hundred year old tradition. The region also boasts its pesto and seafood. We find it's best not to argue with tradition. On National Linguini Day, let these little tongues loose and don't forget to clam up. Welcome to January 15th, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate causing a stir and carbs with a checkered past. It's said that on this day in 1797, John Hetherington—a London hat maker—stepped out into the street wearing his latest creation. A top hat. And to say it made an impression is an understatement. On National Hat Day, put on your favorite hat and step out in something that makes an impression on the folks around you. The recipe for making bagels was once a closely guarded secret. Jewish immigrants in New York City had brought this baked good to America in the early 1900s. They formed a union to keep their tradition to themselves and to keep jobs within their community. Only the sons of members were offered membership, and meetings were conducted only in Yiddish. As crazy as it may sound today, this bagel union was extremely powerful. But they only made bagels, you're thinking. Well, when workers went on strike in the 1950s, all but 2 bagel bakeries in Manhattan had to close, leading to what was called a Bagel Famine. And the sales of lox dropped by over 50%. On National Bagel Day, we celebrate our love for chewy, delicious bagels and the fact that you can find them almost anywhere today. Connor Thompson had organized a fund raiser to assist the families that were displaced from a fire on Mother's Day in Falls Creek. When he heard of the fire and how his classmates lost everything that they had including their pets he decided that he had to do something to help. He an another classmate had organized a Hat Day. In which the students and teachers could pay a dollar to wear a hat to wear a hat and all the money raised would be donated to the family. They raised $800.

I love hats! Not a baseball hat you put on when your hair is dirty and you have errands to run, or the beanie you pull on to watch the grandkids play soccer or t-ball when it's cold. I have plenty of those hats and I love them, too. But I am talking about dressy hats, fun hats, felt hats to wear with a cute winter outfit or a woven hat to wear with a bright spring dress. I love them. I own them. But I don't wear them. You have to have a certain confidence to wear a hat. A swagger maybe? But really? Should the wearing of a hat be a daring act of courage? It shouldn't be, but it is!Millinery, or the making of hats, goes way back. There is a lot of interesting history there, and even sacrifice, and I just figure that with so much sacrifice coming from the history of hats, the least we could do, is wear them! Hat Day is January 15. Who knows.... I may get up enough courage to wear one!
