Learn about their histories, architecture, associations, features and their spiritual lives today.44. Ok, it's not a City church (it's a stone's throw from the boundary) BUT it's worth a podcast. It's hidden: set back from the quiet cul de sac behind the diamond district of Hatton Garden, St Etheldreda's Catholic church is a gem of its own; a medieval survivor and a spiritual survivor that happens to boast some magnificent stained glass windows too. Most importantly its story reflects a bigger national story. Press play! With thanks to marvellous contributors Anthony Weaver from the church and Alexandra Epps from Art in the City.

A thousand facets sits with Sian Evans, Jewellery designer, goldsmith and lapidarist. We talked about her beginnings in the jewelry industry, her 15 years creating her production line, then change to be a lecturer and Central Saint Martins and going back to her roots in the goldsmiths work to create a more thoughtful, slow collection! Hope you enjoy our conversation. About: Sian's work is inspired by interests in archaeology, fashion, geology, nature and sustainable technologies with a deep interest in storytelling. Her many jewellery collections over her career have taken some very different forms, stemming from ideas, ethics and heuristics. Some fashion lead, some materials lead and some process lead. Each of her collections in the last decade have been explorations of process in a long term project about sustainable working practices : Learning a jewellery technology, often, an ancient technology with a low carbon footprint, using recycled or found precious materials, then designing and making collections of jewels that incorporate these. This is her modus operandi and an act of reverence for our skilled, ingenious ancestors. She studied jewellery design, silversmithing and goldsmithing from 1982-86 at The Cass ( City of London Polytechnic - now London Metropolitan University ) In her Summer breaks she worked as a volunteer archaeologist in Dorset. Her first studio was established the year she graduated in 1986, in Spitalfields, London. In the ensuing years she designed and created in this first studio, the biannual collections shown at London, Paris and New York fashion weeks that she became known for. Then from her next larger studio, in Clerkenwell, close to Londons jewellery quarter Hatton Garden, she worked producing collections at the bench alongside her small team of craftspeople. These early collections sold internationally to many stockists and galleries, winning her export and design awards. During this period she was commissioned by designers including Jo Casely-Hayford and Paul Smith, to create lines for them, and by Costume designers for film and TV productions. Her work was regularly seen in the pages of newspapers, glossy magazines and on the ears and necks of TV and film stars. For 13 years she was Senior Lecturer at BA Jewellery Design, Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts. Her research focus: Sustainability and mining , Neolithic and Bronze age technology. Lithics and metalworking She left UAL at the end of 2014 to return to and pursue her design and creative practice. Since reestablishing her practice she has won several awards and accolades : Most notably, her work is in the V & A collection, she has exhibited and sold her work at Sotheby's. She is a Homo Faber Master Artisan. A Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust ( QEST ) grant in 2022 helped to extend her lapidary study, into the wonderful and ancient arts of Intaglio and Cameo carving . She has won a number of awards from the Goldsmiths Design and Craft Awards in different categories ranging from major design awards to awards for craft skills in lapidary. For the past few years she has presented her work annually at The Goldsmiths Fair, in 2024 she was selected by The Goldsmiths Fair and QEST to exhibit at Collect . Despite their meticulous planning, the gang made crucial mistakes, including leaving a digital trail and being caught on CCTV, which led to their eventual capture. The thieves, some in their seventies, were lifelong criminals who saw this heist as one last big score, but only a third of the stolen goods were ever recovered. Their story stands as one of England's most audacious and unusual robberies. Huge thanks to our Sponsors: June's Journey: Download June's Journey on Apple iOS or Android today. In this episode, which is the 7th of Danny Hurst´s Monopoly history series it is the turn of the most expensive light blue property on the board – Pentonville Road. Listen to learn why there is a lighthouse on the street, and its connection with Iggy Pop, Lenin, Trotsky, and the Hatton Garden robbers. He also compares the value of Pentonville Road in 1936, when the game was first sold, to today´s valuations. Including, the inflationary difference. KEY TAKEAWAYS The lighthouse building does have a lighthouse on the roof. It was lit when there were fresh oysters available. Weird…. Danny explains it all in the episode. Pentonville Road was once an industrial manufacturing centre. The jail which is next to the Pentonville Rd square on the board is not located on the street. According to Zoopla, Pentonville Rd is now the 3rd cheapest London Monopoly square from which to buy property. BEST MOMENTS ‘This was Britain´s first planned ring road. ´ ‘Most Londoners would raise their eyebrows and say "Where?" if you were to say you are from Barnsbury.' ‘Both men are hiding out in London and Lenin invites Trotsky to his home.' A few years ago you could have assumed all diamonds had been dug out of the ground – but now it's true that some of them have been created, at unbelievably high temperatures, in just a matter of weeks. In the first of two Business Daily programmes about the evolving diamond market, Lesley Curwen heads to the glamorous jewellery district of Hatton Garden in London – to see how the jewellery world is being re-shaped by the mass production of laboratory-made stones. We hear from India how they're created in temperatures as hot as the sun - and talk to one of the world's biggest jewellery brands about why they are using only man-made diamonds. We also look at claims that man-made diamonds are the green and ethical choice. (Picture: Tweezers holding a diamond. Credit: Getty Images) Presenter: Lesley Curwen Producer: Barbara George

During the late nineteenth century, tens of thousands of diggers, prospectors, merchants, and dealers extracted and shipped over 50 million carats of diamonds from South Africa to London. The primary supplier to the world, South Africa's diamond fields became one of the formative sites of modern capitalist production. At each stage of the diamond's route through the British empire and beyond-from Cape Town to London, from Amsterdam to New York City-carbon gems were primarily mined, processed, appraised, and sold by Jews. In A Brilliant Commodity: Diamonds and Jews in a Modern Setting (Oxford University Press, 2023), historian Dr. Saskia Coenen Snyder traces how once-peripheral Jewish populations became the central architects of a new, global exchange of diamonds that connected African sites of supply, European manufacturing centers, American retailers, and western consumers. Centuries of restrictions had limited Jews to trade and finance, businesses that often heavily relied on internal networks. Jews were well-positioned to become key players in the earliest stage of the diamond trade and its growth into a global industry, a development fueled by technological advancements, a dramatic rise in the demand of luxury goods, and an abundance of rough stones. Relying on mercantile and familial ties across continents, Jews created a highly successful commodity chain that included buyers, brokers, cutters, factory owners, financiers, and retailers. Working within a diasporic ethnic community that bridged city and countryside, metropole and colony, Jews helped build a flourishing diamond industry, notably Hatton Garden in London and the Diamond District of New York City, and a place for themselves in the modern world. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose doctoral work focused on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. One. Final. Robbery. This week we cover the Hatton Garden Heist - carried out by a gang of elderly men in 2015. It might feel too crazy to be true but this happened. The gentlemen plotted a crime that seemed more fitting for a dry British comedy film while they joked and drank pints. When Easter weekend 2015 hit, the men broke into the Hatton Garden Safety Deposit building and descended down an elevator shaft. Their prize lay at the bottom. But who were this unusual group of criminals? Let's discuss!
Matt and Alice talk to Martin Brunt, crime correspondent for Sky News. He was the first reporter to reach Hatton Garden after the break in and charted the developing story. He talks about what it was like to report on this case at the time, why it captured the public imagination, and his surprising correspondence with ringleader, Danny Jones.Listen early and ad free with Wondery+. On the Easter bank holiday weekend of 2015, one of the most daring diamond heists in British history occurred in London's Hatton Garden District. With potentially 40 million pounds worth of jewels missing, Scotland Yard's elite robbery and organized crime unit — the Flying Squad — was put on the case. It was clear from the beginning that the heist was carried out by a highly-skilled group of thieves, but the Flying Squad officers struggled to uncover their identity. That is until CCTV footage revealed they were a rag-tag gang of criminals that have been on their radar for a long, long time. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Sometimes it's hard to retire. Like they say, do something you love and you'll never work a day in your life. For a group of older English gentlemen thieves, this was especially true. There comes a time when the body can't keep up with the mind, though, and simple plans run into complex worlds. It turns out mega jewel heists just aren't what they used to be. Hatton Garden, a TV drama and an old Who
Hollywood legend Sir Michael Caine returns to the big screen in King of Thieves, the second cinematic adaptation of the infamous Hatton Garden burglary in 2015. The south London born actor looks back at his varied career, which he has seen him act alongside Sean Connery, Sylvester Stallone and even the Muppets and also become synonymous darker criminal roles, in films such as Get Carter, Harry Brown and the Italian Job.When Israel Public Radio recently broadcast part of Wagnar's Gotterdammerung or the Twilight of the Gods, it caused a furore leading the station issued an apology. This is because since 1938 there has been an understanding that, because for his anti-Semitism, Wagner's music is neither performed nor broadcast in Israel. Stig talks to Jonathan Livni, founder of Wagner in Israel, who is in favour of lifting the ban, and Yael Cherniavsky, the conductor and soprano, who used to run the offending radio network, who disagrees. Scotland's first design museum, the £80 million Victorian & Albert Dundee, opens this weekend on the city's waterfront. It will have a permanent collection which promises to tell the story of Scotland's design heritage. Art critic Moira Jeffrey has visited Dundee and lets us know if the museum lives up to its grand design.
