When one thinks  of exorcisms, it's hard to get past the infamous imagery published to the world in 1973, of a young girl, floating above a bed, flanked by two priests, flinging holy water and yelling about the power of Christ. At the same time as the Exorcist movie was hitting the cinemas, however, there was one, real life exorcist doing very different work. With several decades of banishing evil under his belt, he was taking on far bigger tasks, with vampires, the Loch Ness Monster and even the Bermuda Triangle all within his sights. In this week's News Roundtable episode, Chris Wright is joined by writer, journalist and broadcaster, Christina Patterson, Communications Officer at the Institute of Economic Affairs, Reem Ibrahim, and former Political Editor of the Sunday Mirror, Nigel Nelson.Chris kicks the conversation off with Rishi Sunak's seemingly desperate electoral ploy to push through the Rwanda scheme, passing the Safety of Rwanda Bill through the House of Commons on Wednesday night. The panel analyse whether the public is as concerned with the issue of immigration as the government have convinced themselves they are, and how Britain should be addressing legal and illegal immigration. Reem argues that immigrants on average are less of a burden and contribute to the economy more than ‘native' Britons… They then focus on Sunak: does he have a vision for the country behind the veil of party politics? Will the Conservatives lurch even further to the right after his likely election defeat? Chris then asks each panellist what story is catching their interest right now: - Nigel takes on the post-office scandal and the impact of ITV's drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office- Christina's is the expansion of the Israel-Gaza conflict in the Middle East to the Red Sea- Reem's is the government's historic bill to ban the sale of tobacco products to anyone born on or after 1 January 2009 – she thinks the attack on vape products doesn't make senseWe'd love to hear what you think of the episode at email@wrightonthenail.fm.Many thanks,WOTN Team  'I Hit The Nail Right On The Head' by Billy Bremner. © Fridens liljor/Micke Finell.Rock around the clock productions AB.www.rockaroundtheclock.coThis episode was produced by Sound Sapiensoundsapien.comThis podcast is published by New Thinking: www.newthinking.com Explore New Thinking podcasts via our website: www.newthinking.com/podcasts

In 1984, a serial burglar and rapist was at large in England, his crimes spanning several Home Counties as well as the northeast of the country. He was armed, masked and dangerous, and he had an unusual calling card – in every house he broke into, he built himself a blanket fort in the living room and made himself at home, watching television and drinking cups of tea. His habit of den-building and the way he slunk off into the countryside after his assaults soon led to him being given the nickname ‘The Fox'. People were fearful, and the police had a tough job on their hands as his attacks crossed multiple jurisdictions. In this week's News Roundtable episode, Chris Wright is joined by former Political Editor of the Sunday Mirror, Nigel Nelson, co-founder of Momentum and former advisor to Jeremy Corbyn, James Schneider, and Professor of European Politics, and Jean Monnet Chair of European Integration at the University of Ireland Maynooth, John O'Brennan.Yesterday, the Minister of State for Immigration Robert Jenrick resigned over the government's Rwanda Plan. Sunak is facing a revolt from the right and centre of his party over this issue, and the panel unpack how the Tories got into this mess. They turn to the recent changes to visa rules where the minimum salary threshold for a work visa is to be raised to £38,700, from the current £26,200, with some exemptions in health and social care. The panel dissect the very foundations of the economic necessity of foreign migrants, and the rhetoric of the government. One panellist argues that ‘stopping the boats' has been largely manufactured as a political media distraction from the cost-of-living crisis, which has led to this sickly Rwanda farce. They turn to the Covid-inquiry, Boris Johnson's performance, the nature of the reporting on it, and whether the purpose of learning about what went wrong for a future pandemic is being achieved. Chris then raises the bizarre and somewhat enraging issue for the Labour Party of Starmer's praising of Thatcher in his recent Telegraph article. When Annie Campbell uprooted her daughter from their home in Donegal, Ireland and relocated to Sauchie, Scotland in 1960, the move resulted in consequences far beyond what anyone could have expected. Removed from the only home she'd ever known, eleven-year-old Virginia Campbell did her best to acclimate to the foreign environment as she and her mother settled into the home of Virginia's aunt, but within just a few weeks of their arrival the family was under siege from an invisible entity Virginia would later name “Wee Hughie.”One of the most notorious cases of poltergeist activity in Scottish history, the case of the Sauchie poltergeist involved the usual trappings of poltergeist phenomenon—slamming doors, moving objects, and disruptive noises. Yet what set the phenomenon apart from myriad other cases of poltergeist phenomenon was that the supposedly supernatural phenomenon was witnessed by many bystanders, including Virginia's teachers and classmates. Was the Sauchie poltergeist a genuine example of paranormal activity, or was “Wee Hughie” nothing more than an elaborate hoax perpetrated by a creative girl seeking attention in the wake of major disruption in her life and environment?Thank you to the lovely David White, of Bring Me the Axe podcast, for research assistance :)ReferencesAssociated Press. 1960. When Muswell Hill resident David Farrant wrote to the letters section of the Hampstead and Highgate Express in February 1970, he had hoped to find others who'd witnessed any unusual or potentially supernatural happenings in London's Highgate Cemetery. Instead, Farrant kicked off a moral panic over vampires, ghosts, and all manner of occult activities that featured prominently in the pages of British newspapers for years. Farrant's letter received a few responses from others who claimed to have had their own supernatural experiences in Highgate Cemetery, but the story would likely have ended there had it not been for Sean Manchester. A self-proclaimed occultist and vampire hunter, Manchester claimed that what Farrant had seen at Highgate was in fact a vampire, and moreover, the cemetery itself was the site of ongoing black masses, vampire gatherings, and other dark practices. Soon, a rivalry developed between Farrant and Manchester over who had the power to eradicate the supernatural threat at Highgate and just weeks after Farrant sent his letter to the newspapers, Manchester led a large mob of Londoners into Highgate Cemetery intent on driving out the evil that supposedly swelled there.Throughout the early 1970s, the war of words between Farrant and Manchester frequently captured the public's attention, thanks to the various news outlets that couldn't resist the outrageous actions of the two men that ranged from benign and silly (a naked fire dance in an abandoned building) to gruesome and disrespectful (desecration of human remains). However, while the antics of the two men at the center of the story may elicit a smirk or an eyeroll, the public's response to the supposed supernatural threat provides valuable insight into a phenomenon of moral panic that go on to fuel, among other things, the satanic panic that dominated the news throughout the 1980s and 90s. The Duke of Sussex aka Prince Harry is taking the media to task over intrusion into his private life which he claims crossed a line into illegality; He believes that Mirror Group Newspapers – publishers of the Daily Mirror, the Sunday Mirror and The People published details about his private life that could only have been obtained by hacking or other unlawful means; MGN is contesting the claim. More than 100 people in total are involved in the High Court action; Harry's is just one of four representative cases being heard. He also has cases pending against the Sun and the Daily Mail's Publishers – and in his statement to the court, he launched a broader attack on the press, warning that “democracy fails when your press fails to scrutinse and hold the government accountable, and instead choose to get into bed with them so they can ensure the status quo”. That could almost be a mission statement for the Byline Times which grew out our executive editor Peter Jukes' desire to tell the truth about the phone hacking scandal. Despite the number of documented cases, the poltergeist has consistently been one of the most difficult forms of paranormal phenomena to define with very little consensus over what they are actually supposed to be. Spirits, invisible, unknown energy or childish hoaxes all form the basis of the most common theories that have been presented. In England, the Enfield case is without doubt the most famous poltergeist case and has, over the decades, had all three theories put forward by those that investigated the small, London house. Hundreds of miles north and over the Scottish border in a tiny village named Sauchie is another case that has proven just as difficult to define, despite the contemporary investigator, George Owen concluding, “In my opinion the Sauchie case must be regarded as establishing beyond all reasonable doubt the objective reality of some poltergeist phenomena”. Nostalgia Interviews with Chris Deacy

It was a huge privilege for this week's Nostalgia Interview to meet Nigel Nelson, the longest serving political editor in Fleet Street. Nigel works for the Sunday Mirror and Sunday People. We recorded our interview on the afternoon that the Prime Minister and the Chancellor of the Exchequer received fines from the Metropolitan Police for attending a party in Downing Street during lockdown. Nigel gives us his take on whether they should have resigned and how the removal of the Prime Minister affects the country's command structure. Nigel has worked with seven Prime Ministers, and he explains that he still has a frisson of excitement every time he walks into the House of Commons. He talks about how history can teach you lessons but that it can't tell you what will happen next. We discuss how the nature of news and politics has changed over the years and how it is now a 24/7 operation. Nigel talks about the things he sometimes can't publish and why he is irritated by political biographies, and how facts don't always tell the full story. From his teenage years Nigel has had an interest in politics and a talent for writing and he reveals how he has done things which he could only have dreamed about when he was young, including writing a political novel. I ask Nigel if he ever thought about being on the other side of the fence and he recounts the time he did toy with that idea at the time of the SDP in the 1980s. We learn why he would rather be on the sidelines than becoming one of the players. We find out about the events that Nigel has influenced through his work on The People, and we talk about why he admires Ken Clarke and Nigel Farage from the other side of the political spectrum and the importance for a political journalist of not becoming too friendly with politicians. Nigel shares his thoughts on how Prime Minister's Questions is really theatre and we learn that politicians often don't get along with politicians on their own side. We learn that Nigel's favourite film is Zulu and we discover why Muhammad Ali is such a pivotal figure and why Nigel has an interest in Gregorian chants. Nigel expresses his thoughts on organized religion, and we discuss whether politics and religion are similar. His mother was a spy and Nigel reveals his own experience of when the intelligence agencies tried to recruit him, too. Nigel explains that he would rather reveal than keep secrets. We also learn why he turned his back on university. Being a journalist, Nigel has a ringside view on history and he talks about his experience of being under fire at the time of war, how he and his wife have diametrically opposite political positions, and we learn why Nigel favours coalition as the best form of government. Then, at the end of the interview, Nigel reflects on his life and career and explains why he is a forward looking person. Please note: Opinions expressed are solely those of Chris Deacy and Nigel Nelson and do not necessarily represent the views or opinions of the University of Kent.

In this week's  ‘News Roundtable' episode, host Chris Wright joins political correspondent at PA Media Geri Scott, former Sunday Mirror editor and director of communications at UK music Vincent Moss, and economist Vicky Pryce. The episode begins by discussing the lorry queues and chaos in Dover to debate whether this is a sign that Brexit is expensive and damaging to the economy. They consider whether the gridlock was mainly due to the suspension of sailings by P&O ferries, and how this issue may intensify with travel during the Easter bank holiday weekend.  The conversation then moves to chew over Rishi Sunak and Boris Johnson's decision to reject calls for their resignation after receiving lockdown fines. Will Johnson survive the return of partygate? And how will this affect Rishi Sunak's leadership, following the emergence of a tax row involving his wife?Together, the panel explores the government's crackdown on unauthorised migrants with plans for people seeking asylum in the UK to be flown 4,500 miles to Rwanda. The panel explores whether this initiative, described by Labour as “unworkable and unethical”, is a distraction from Boris Johnson's recent law-breaking.Created & produced by Podcast Partners: www.podcastpartners.comSign up to receive updates by email when a new episode drops at www.wrightonthenail.fm

Her debut, How to be Brave, got to No4 on Amazon and was a Guardian Readers' Pick; Maria in the Moon was described as ‘quirky, darkly comic and heartfelt' by the Sunday Mirror; The Lion Tamer Who Lost shortlisted for the Popular Romantic Novel of 2019 at the RNA Awards and longlisted for the Polari Prize 2019; Call Me Star Girl longlisted for the Guardian's Not The Booker Prize and was Best magazine's Best Book of the Year 2019; I Am Dust was a Crime Magazine Monthly Pick; and This Is How We Are Human was a Clare Mackintosh Book Club pick.  Louise's memoir Daffodils will be released in audiobook 1st April, exploring a shocking family suicide attempt and a difficult childhood. Nothing Else, her eight novel, will be released 23rd June. Today we are going to explore writing a memoir and how that impacted her... Some key points from our interviewHow even though she felt like she had been broken in the past, she's not unbroken as she was never truly brokenHow she reversed her decision in writing her memoir after her mother jumped off the Humber bridge and miraculously survived How she wanted to look back over her difficult childhood, childhood trauma and the challenging relationship with her mother to make sense of it and possibly retrieve some of her deeply buried memoriesHow growing up with a mother that has a narcissistic personality disorder shaped her into stepping into a mothering and nurturing role from a very young ageHow she knows that even though her mind has deeply buried memories around childhood sexual abuse, and she can't currently access them, her body knows and remembers the traumaHow from a very young age, writing has always been a therapy and escapism for her.Hosted by Madeleine Black, the show will share stories of all the amazing people Madeleine has met on her own journey as an author/speaker and these stories will heal, motivate, inspire and bring hope when they share their wisdom and knowledge with her.She really believes in the power that comes when we share our stories, that in fact we are not story tellers but story healers. In this week's ‘News Roundtable' episode, host Chris Wright is joined by David Wooding, assistant politics editor at The Sun;  Robert Hutton, parliamentary sketch writer for The Critic Magazine; and Nigel Nelson, political editor at the Sunday Mirror & Sunday People. The conversation begins by reviewing Boris Johnson's much criticised “paper shuffling” speech at the CBI conference, to debate whether it will damage his popularity with the electorate, and to discuss if letters of no confidence from Tory MPs could lead to a leadership challenge. The conversation moves on to talk about the migrant crossing crisis, after at least 27 people died recently crossing the English Channel on an overcrowded dinghy that capsized. They exchange views on a UK-France blame game, and what steps could be taken to prevent people from making the perilous journey. Together the panel also share views on the handling of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe's incarceration in Iran, as well as whether the government will consider mandatory covid vaccinations.Created & produced by Podcast Partners: www.podcastpartners.comSign up to receive updates by email when a new episode drops at: www.wrightonthenail.fm

Seeing other people fully - as more than how they look or what they say, is hard and takes courage. Buying a coffee for the person in the queue behind you on a cold day, or not lashing out when someone upsets you means not giving into the fear of 'what ifs' and putting kindness before everything else. And this week's guest, Debbi Marco, journalist and author of The Power of Kindness, Inspiring Stories: Heart-Warming Tales and Random Acts of Kindness from the Coronavirus Pandemic, asks us to see behind the behaviour and pause in order to "strengthen our kind muscle". In this episode we discuss the buddhist concept of common humanity, global acts of kindness that occurred throughout the world during the covid pandemic and whether or not the world is becoming a more kind place. There is so much down-to-earth wisdom in this conversation. It'll make you think about your own actions while also inviting you to trust in the greater good that's possible in all of humanity. And hopefully help you find the courage to be more kind. Sit back, have a listen and enjoy! Debbi Marco has written for a wide range of newspapers from The Daily Telegraph to The Sunday Mirror. She also features regularly on BBC radio, is a an experienced copywriter and ghost writer as well as being the author of five books, The Power of Kindness, being her most recent.
