What the Riff?!?
1988 - May: Cinderella "Long Cold Winter"

One of the big acts on the 80's glam metal scene was Cinderella.  Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tom Keifer and bassist Eric Brittingham formed the band in suburban Philadelphia.  Gene Simmons of Kiss tried to get the band a deal with PolyGram, but was unsuccessful at getting the label to take interest.  Jon Bon Jovi was more successful with getting them a contract with Mercury/Polygram Records.  Keifer and Brittingham added guitarist Jeff LaBar and drummer Jim Drnec to the band.  Their debut album entitled Night Songs was released in 1986, and it achieved triple platinum status.  Shortly after the recording of that album, Jim Drnec left the group.  This, their follow-up album Long Cold Winter, would continue the band's progression in the glam metal genre, but would see a subtle shift towards more blues rock.  It would also see the introduction of Fred Coury as drummer for the group, though this would come after the album was recorded utilizing percussionist Cozy Powell for almost all tracks on the album.  This second studio album would be a commercial success as well, reaching number 10 on the US charts and achieving double platinum status before the end of the year.  The album included the rock ballad “Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone),”which would reach number 12 on the Billboard charts, the highest charting single for the band.  Video was a significant factor in the success of the band, and they released a video compilation in 1990 called “Tales from the Gypsy Road” featuring their promo videos and live medleys.Cinderella would be predominantly an opening band through the late 80's and early 90's, touring with Poison, Bon Jovi, and David Lee Roth.  Unfortunately the band would decline by the mid 90's due to various setbacks and drama with personnel as well as shifting popularity in the music industry.  Their last performance was in 2014.Break out the hair spray as Wayne leads us through this album. Bad Seamstress Blues/Fallin' Apart at the SeamsThe leading track to the album starts with an acoustic blues number paired with a heavier blues song, complete with slide guitar and harmonica.  The lyrics are of a life that has come full circle.  No regrets, but a mixture of success and sorrow.  “Look in the mirror at what I found, It's just the past and it's over now.”Gypsy RoadThese lyrics discuss perseverance to achieve success, but also the loneliness and doubt that come with realizing that dream.  The song is a composite of a life on the road, complete with hotel rooms and overnight rides on the tour bus.  This song hit number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100.Take Me BackThe final song on the album features blues instrumentation including the slide guitar and more cow bell!  The lyrics reflect on a younger life from a distance.  The singer reminisces about how he was raised and wanting to be reminded of what he left behind. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Axel F (Main Theme from the motion picture “Beverly Hills Cop”)This movie from the mid-80's made its debut on network TV this month. STAFF PICKS:Electric Blue by IcehouseLynch gives us a cool start to the staff picks with Australian band Icehouse's biggest US hit.  The lyrics tell the tale of a man pursuing the love of a woman who seems above his station.  “Icehouse” is an Aussie slang term for an insane asylum.  This song was written by lead singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Iva Davies, and Jon Oates of Hall & Oates fame.Heaven Tonight by Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising ForceBruce features neoclassical metal guitar virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen paired with the vocals of former Rainbow and Deep Purple front man Joe Lynn Turner.  This is off Malmsteen's fourth studio album, “Odyssey.” This album went to number 40 on the Billboard 200 charts, the highest charting Malmsteen album to date.Wait by White Lion Rob brings us a power ballad that peaked at number 8 on the US charts in May 1988.  It was originally released in June 1987, but did not enter the charts until February 1988, based on the strength of their video on MTV.  The video featured Christie Muhaw who died at the age of 24 in a car accident less than a year after the video was released.Damn Good by David Lee RothWayne's staff pick continues the blues focus  with a power ballad from Roth and 12-string work by virtuoso Steve Vai.  The lyrics were inspired by an encounter Roth had with an old high school friend who had some high school pictures.  It is a wistful song remembering friends and good times from the past.   NOVELTY TRACK:Killer Klowns by The DickiesWe close out this week's podcast with a track of punk rock's The Dickies.  This is off their EP and the movie "Killer Klowns from Outer Space. On this weeks episode, its another listerner's pick! We give listen to  1978's Heaven Tonight, Cheap Trick's third  studio album,  and considered by many to be their best.  Having explored their harder rock side on their self-titled debut, and embracing their power pop leaning on their second LP In Color, Heaven Tonight finds the band finding a happy middle ground between both to fantastic results.  From the opener fantastic "Surrender", an ode to the generation gap (considered one of the greatest power pop songs ever), to the bouncy piano send off of "How Are You", Heaven Tonight is a whirlwind of crunchy guitars, soaring vocals, and impossible hooks.

In 1978, Cheap Trick were much like their friends from KISS - they were working hard on the road, putting on great live shows but their studio albums weren't making much of a dent in the charts. However, thanks to opening for bands that were doing well in Japan, Cheap Trick amassed a nice following there and earned a #1 hit with the studio version of I Want You To Want Me (which didn't chart in the US). So the band decided to release a live album in Japan only to reward their fans in The Land of the Rising Sun. However, thanks to I Want You To Want Me's inclusion as a b-side from a single on their 3rd album Heaven Tonight and imports of At Budokan coming from Japan to the US, they released the live album worldwide and the rest is history. The live versions of tracks like Ain't That A Shame, Surrender and I Want You To Want Me are the quintessential versions of those tunes on US rock radio. Plus, Cheap Trick set up their next album for success as it included songs that would be included on Dream Police. For kids growing up in the late 70s, Cheap Trick At Budokan was in the air, on the turntables and sung along to everyday. This was a fun one to go back and give a listen as you can hear some of the punk influence on their riffs while maintaining that pure rock sound that helped get them into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. But make no mistake, without this album we wouldn't be talking about them today. For a movie about the music industry, why is the music so lacklustre? And does this movie feature the most over zealous hot dog vendor in cinema history? Please enjoy.

In addition to his hosting duties of the awesome Rock and/or Roll Podcast, Brian's got an awesome new book coming out this Summer based on the early days of Cheap Trick! This Band Has No Past tells the story of a bar band from the Midwest—the best and weirdest bar band in the Midwest—and how these four baby boomers, having been lucky enough to avoid the Vietnam draft, doggedly pursued a most unlikely career in rock'n'roll and made it on their own terms. It traces every gnarly limb of the family tree of bands that culminated in Cheap Trick, then details how this unlikely foursome paid their dues—with interest—night after night, slogging it out everywhere from high schools to bars to bowling alleys to fans' back yards, before signing to Epic Records and releasing two brilliant albums six months apart.Drawing on more than eighty original interviews, This Band Has No Past is packed full of new insights and information that fans of the band will devour. How was the Cheap Trick logo created? How did the checkerboard pattern come to be associated with the band? When did Rick Nielsen start wearing a ballcap 24/7? Who caught their mom and dad rolling on the couch? Read on and find out. The book is set for release June 21, 2022 and we can't wait to get it!In this episode, the guys each share their favorite and least favorite songs from Cheap Trick's 70's output. Cheap Trick Part 2In Part 2 of our Cheap Trick review we pick up in 1979 with the band deciding to record a live album while on tour in Japan to support their third album Heaven Tonight. The decision to record a live album to capture the mania surrounding the band in Japan proved to be career changing. At Budokan, originally slated for release in Japan only, changed the fortunes of Cheap Trick from opening act and small venue headliner to arena kings. Seemingly overnight, Cheap Trick became a household name in their home country on the strength of their first major hit “I Want You To Want Me.” We explore the significance of At Budokan and discuss the absolute brilliance of one of the best live rock albums ever recorded. From there, Cheap Trick recorded the hit album Dream Police. Leaving the 70’s, Cheap Trick created a legacy of 4 classic studio albums and 1 all-time great live album. The early to mid 80’s would not be as successful for the band as they experienced some commercial disappointment. Then out of nowhere in the late 80’s, Cheap Trick climbed again to the top of the world with a batch of pop songs that would put them back in the forefront. Many bands get one shot at superstardom and then fade away. Cheap Trick had two separate runs at superstardom. Although their music output of the 90’s and 2000’s has not been as commercially successful, the band continue to record and make relevant music. We wrap up Part 2 with our personal Top 10 songs by Cheap Trick. While many of our choices are predictable, you will want to hang around for the end for some surprises (and maybe some songs you were not familiar with). Enjoy Cheap Trick Part 2 as we celebrate one of the best rock bands America ever produced.Intro music provided by Joe Giddings"#1" from Star Collector's album Songs For The Whole Family

Formed in 1973 in Cheap Trick are one of the most successful and influential bands in Power Pop history. But to only fit them in the Power Pop box would not be accurate. Over the course of nearly 50 years, they have recorded songs that could be categorized as hard rock, prog rock, glam rock and even pure Top 40 pop. From the beginning, Cheap Trick were a contradiction of sight and sound – Lead Singer Robin Zander and Bassist Tom Peterson looked like they were cut out of the Rock n Roll idol template with their good looks and rock star presence. Meanwhile, Guitarist Rick Nielsen looked more like a character out of a comic book and Bun E. Carlos looked like - well your Dad. The music at one moment sounded like an evolution of The Beatles and then something more like a combination of weird prog, hard rock, glam and punk. While success would come in a big way in 1979 as Cheap Trick became one of the biggest bands in the world, they were hardly an Overnight Sensation. In fact, after three studio albums from 1977 – 1979, many wondered if Cheap Trick would ever become more than a regional rock band playing to a thousand fans in small clubs and theaters. They released their self-titled debut album in early 1977. The album received some favorable reviews but went unnoticed by record buyers and failed to crack the Billboard 200.The second album, In Color, considered one of their best studio albums was released later in 1977. While it fared better than the debut (#73) it still did not make many waves. But just when things seemed dire for Cheap Trick, something was brewing on the other side of the world in Japan where the album peaked at #30. They released their 3rd album Heaven Tonight in 1978 where the album would eventually reach #48 in US. Meanwhile, as the saying goes, they were Big in Japan where the album reached #11. On tour there in 1979, their lives would be changed forever. Intro music provided by Joe Giddings"#1" from Star Collector's album Songs For The Whole Family

Johnny reflected about his time being in Waysted with Paul Chapman and how Paul’s referral landed him over in the UK and playing with his hero’s, recording “Save Your Prayers” for Capitol Records and going on Tour with Iron Maiden. We revisited the 4 UFO Albums TONKA played on and played “Makin’ Moves” from The Wild,The Willing and The Innocent”. And Johnny dedicated “Heaven Tonight” to Paul from their Waysted album Save Your Prayers. A very touching tribute. Thanx Johnny. I am so glad we could honor and pay tribute to such an amazing guitarist who has left us too soon at the age of 66. My prayers and condolences go out to PAUL CHAPMAN Family and Friends and Fans. The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Guy Pearce of Brimstone.   Set in the menacing inferno of the old American West, the film is directed and written by Martin Koolhoven (Winter in Wartime, AmnesiA) and features an all-star cast: GuyPearce (HBO's "Mildred Pierce," The Proposition, Memento),  Dakota Fanning (The Runaways, War of the Worlds, Man on Fire), Emilia Jones (One Day, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides), Carice van Houten (HBO's "Games of Thrones," Black Book) , and Kit Harington (HBO's "Games of Thrones," MI-5). About Guy: Having little interest in subjects at school like math or science, Guyfavored art, drama and music. He joined local theatre groups at a young age and appeared in such productions as "The King and I", "Fiddler on the Roof" and "The Wizard of Oz". In 1985, just two days after his final high school exam, Guy started a four-year stint as "Mike Young" on the popular Aussie soap Neighbours (1985). At age 20, Guy appeared in his first film, Heaven Tonight (1990), then, after a string of appearances in film, television and on the stage, he won the role of an outrageous drag queen in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994).
