This is an encore of our episode with the great director, Rob Marshall. He has made numerous films that have been honored with a total of 30 Academy Award nominations — winning 9 in all, including Best Picture for “Chicago,” which alone won a total of 6 of those Oscars. Also, for “Chicago,” Rob received the Directors Guild Award, and nominations for Best Director for the Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA awards. Additionally, he won Best Directorial Debut from the National Board of Review and the New York Film Critics Online, as well as the American Choreography Award. Most recently, Rob directed and produced the live-action feature, “The Little Mermaid” for Disney, starring Halle Bailey, Melissa McCarthy and Javier Bardem.Rob's other directorial achievements include multiple nominations for award-winning features like: “Memoirs of a Geisha,” “Nine,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” which went on to gross over 1 billion dollars worldwide, “Into the Woods,” and “Mary Poppins Returns.”Rob executive produced, directed, and choreographed the NBC TV event “Tony Bennett: An American Classic,” for which he won his second Directors Guild Award. He's also won 3 Emmys for Direction, Choreography, and Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special. He directed and choreographed the Disney/ABC movie musical “Annie,” which received 12 Emmy nominations and won the prestigious Peabody Award. For choreographing Annie, Rob also received an Emmy and an American Choreography Award. He's received the Humanitas Prize for co-writing Mary Poppins Returns, and other awards from the Art Directors Guild, the Cinema Audio Society, the Costume Designers Guild, as well as the Annie Award, the Hamilton Award, and the Chita Rivera Award.Rob's extensive stage work includes the Broadway productions of “Cabaret,” “Little Me,” “Victor/Victoria,” “Damn Yankees,” “She Loves Me,” “Company,” and “Kiss of the Spiderwoman.” He's been nominated six times for the Tony Award, and he's a George Abbott Award winner. For the record, Rob and I are both graduates of Taylor Allderdice High School here in Pittsburgh. Tim Powers was born in Buffalo, New York, on Leap Year Day in 1952, but has lived in southern California since 1959. He graduated from California State University at Fullerton with a BA in English in 1976; the same year saw the publication of his first two novels, The Skies Discrowned and Epitaph in Rust. Tim's subsequent novels are The Drawing of the Dark, The Anubis Gates (winner of the Philip K. Dick Memorial Award and the Prix Apollo), Dinner at Deviant's Palace (winner of the Philip K. Dick Memorial Award), On Stranger Tides (the novel the movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, was based on) The Stress of Her Regard, Last Call (winner of the World Fantasy Award), Expiration Date, Earthquake Weather, Declare (winner of the World Fantasy Award) and Three Days to Never. His most recent book is Hide Me Among the Graves. The Manchester Guardian called Powers “the best fantasy writer to appear in decades.” Tim has taught at the Clarion Science Fiction Writers' Workshop at Michigan State University six times and currently teaches the annual Writers of the Future workshop. He has been involved with the Contest since its early years, serving as one of the instructors (along with Algis Budrys and Orson Scott Card) at the very first official WotF workshop in Sag Harbor. He was formally inducted as a judge in 1993. Powers lives with his wife, Serena, in San Bernardino, California. “I think I've been a judge for most of the quarters in the past two decades. This means that several times a year I get a stack of manuscript photocopies via next-day mail, and take a day off from my own writing to read them all and evaluate them; this is no chore, since Dave Wolverton or K.D. Wentworth has already culled them from the total volume of submissions, and invariably there is at least one story that I'm grateful to have a chance to read. I send my verdicts in, and usually I hang on to a couple of the photocopies, just because I want to have the chance to read them again before the actual anthology is published. The stories at this point have no provenance beyond their titles—I don't know the genders or ages or addresses of the writers; and not all of them turn out to live in North America, by any means. The only thing I can be fairly sure of is that I have not read anything by any of these writers before. (Over the years, I have read a lot of subsequent books from many of them, with their names right there on the spines and their photos on the dust jacket flap—though since I'm not a very up-to-date reader, I generally don't get around to reading them until they've been nominated for Hugos or Nebulas or World Fantasy Awards.)” — Tim Powers Considered one of the most prolific writers working in modern fiction, New York Times and USA Today bestselling writer, Dean Wesley Smith published over two hundred novels and over seven hundred books in fifty years, and hundreds and hundreds of short stories. He has over thirty million copies of his books in printAt the moment he produces novels in four major series, including the time travel Thunder Mountain novels set in the old west, the galaxy-spanning Seeders Universe series, the cold case mystery series, Cold Poker Gang series, and the superhero series starring Poker Boy. During his career, Dean also wrote a couple dozen Star Trek novels, the only two original Men in Black novels, Spider-Man and X-Men novels, plus novels set in gaming and television worlds. Writing with his wife Kristine Kathryn Rusch under the name Kathryn Wesley, they wrote the novel for the NBC miniseries The Tenth Kingdom and other books for “I think this Contest has done more to help new writers achieve their dreams than anything that has come before. I know it gave me a huge push. It's wonderful to return to be a part of it again as a judge.” —Dean Wesley Smith Find out more at: deanwesleysmith.com

And what did she think of the Gilmore Girls revival on Netflix? In this special broadcast, Bryson Lyons compares and contrasts the movies The Princess Bride and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
When the original Pirates of the Caribbean was released in 2003, career upticks were abound for all involved. The third sequel was supposed to mark the end of the franchise, so all the stars went their separate ways to do other projects. Orlando Bloom was everything from a romantic lead (Elizabethtown) to a sandal wearing swordsman (Kingdom of Heaven). Keira Knightly was a bounty hunter (Domino) and a fixture in period pieces (Atonement, Pride and Prejudice). So, when rumblings of another sequel in the Disney attraction based franchise started to get louder, the two stars had every reason to say thanks, but no thanks. However, third star Johnny Depp had a bomb called The Tourist in the rear view, and needed a hit. So, why not write a new entry starring its Oscar winning background character? That's exactly what they did, and the result, is Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides. Join Matt, Adam, and Garrett as they continue on the ride that is the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise with this review of the fourth entry in the franchise. After being disappointed in their revisit of At Worlds End, can On Stranger Tides avoid the rough current of their words? Listen in to find out!

Yo Ho, Yo Ho, here we go again! It's movie number four in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise: "On Stranger Tides." This was the long awaited installment following a extended hiatus that saw the changing of many leaders in the Disney company including one of the producers behind the original Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. Perhaps it is changing of the guards and the EXTREME trimming of the budget (made for 100 Million dollars LESS than At World's End.) that makes this film feel like it's...missing something.Though we are missing a Will Turner and a Elizabeth...Turner, we still have Captain Jack Sparrow...though he doesn't do much captain-ing in this movie. Gibbs, is back and loyal as ever. Barbossa, a turn-coat Privateer in the service of his Majesty. Jack is in need of an adventure and finds one in an old flame played by the intoxicatingly gorgeous Penelope Cruz who turns out to be the long-lost daughter of Blackbeard himself, played by Ian McShane. Severely watered down supernatural elements and a ragged supporting cast offer some level of fun but may have earned it's reputation as the most disappointing additions to the Pirates of the Caribbean. But don't let that stop you from listening in on the more rewarding elements of the movie. Hoist the colors! We have reached the third installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Back when the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise was perceived to be a trilogy of films, boy, those were the days, eh? This overly long yet entertaining movie had us experiencing a lot of the thrills and adventure for the first time in a long time. After being treated to a bleak opening scene which features a depressing pirate shanty, against a montage of traumatizing mass-hangings, we are transported to Singapore where Elizabeth Swan and the crew of the Black Pearl have teamed up with a back-from-the-dead Barbossa and a more brooding Will Turner to bring Jack Sparrow back from Davey Jones Locker with the assistance of the mystical and mysterious Tia Dolma. From there it is nothing but twists, turns, callbacks GALORE and...peanuts. If you thought the Pirates series was over after At World's End, think again! Captain Jack is back but Will and Elizabeth are missing, including Gore Verbinski who directed the first three.
