The Eruption That Split an Island and Changed Earth's Future

The eruption that split an island and changed Earth's future was a massive volcanic blast that literally tore an island apart. This eruption, like the famous Krakatoa eruption in 1883, was so powerful that it created a huge crater, or caldera, and sent ash and gases high into the atmosphere. It wasn't just about the island splitting; the eruption caused tsunamis and dramatic weather changes worldwide. The ash blocked out sunlight, leading to cooler temperatures for months, affecting crops and weather patterns across the globe. It's a perfect example of how one big natural event can have a ripple effect on the entire planet. This eruption not only changed landscapes but also reshaped history by impacting economies, environments, and lives everywhere. In this episode:00:48 Bumblebees can learn from each other new tricksOne behaviour thought unique to humans is the ability to learn something from your predecessors that you couldn't figure out on your own. However, researchers believe they have shown bumblebees are also capable of this ‘standing on the shoulders of giants' approach to learning. Bees that were taught how to complete a puzzle too difficult to solve on their own, were able to share this knowledge with other bees, raising the possibility that this thought-to-be human trait could be widespread amongst animals.Research article: Bridges et al.News and Views: Bees and chimpanzees learn from others what they cannot learn alone16:55 Research HighlightsWhy the Krakatau eruption made the skies green, and the dining habits of white dwarf stars.Research Highlight: Why sunsets were a weird colour after Krakatau blew its topResearch Highlight: This dying star bears a jagged metal scar19:28 The fish that collectively, electrically senseMany ocean-dwelling animals sense their environment using electric pulses, which can help them hunt and avoid predators. Now research shows that the tiny elephantnose fish can increase the range of this sense by combining its pulses with those of other elephantnose fish. This allows them to discriminate and determine the location of different objects at a much greater distance than a single fish is able to. This is the first time a collective electric sense has been seen in animals, which could provide an ‘early-warning system', allowing a group to avoid predators from a greater distance.Research Article: Pedraja and Sawtell27:54 Briefing ChatThe organoids made from cells derived from amniotic fluid, and the debate over the heaviest animal.Nature News: Organoids grown from amniotic fluid could shed light on rare diseasesThe New York Times: Researchers Dispute Claim That Ancient Whale Was Heaviest Animal EverSubscribe to Nature Briefing, an unmissable daily round-up of science news, opinion and analysis free in your inbox every weekday.

Princess Cruises Hotel General Manager Simona Stumberger was selected to serve in this special role as an ambassador for Princess, because she epitomizes professionalism and always delivers service with a smile.A native of Slovenia where Stumberger studied hospitality management, she began her career at sea in the bar department and further diversified her hotel experience by working in guest services, and hand in hand with the hotel and food and beverage divisions. Stumberger has been with Princess Cruises for nearly five years. The float out completes the first comprehensive phase of construction for Sun Princess which now transitions to focus on building the ship's interiors. The 175,500-ton, 4,300-guest Sun Princess will offer an array of exciting new dining, entertainment and activity offerings, as well as luxurious staterooms and suites across a broad spectrum of categories. The ship will be highlighted by amazing, never-before-seen spaces such as The Dome, a transformational entertainment venue inspired by the terraces of Santorini, the next-level, brand-iconic Piazza, and three-story Horizons Dining Room that are sure to have everyone talking.Cunard to Launch Silent Discos in Onboard NightclubsYou can dance, you can jive, and you can have the time of your life – in blissful silence – as Cunard is set to launch silent discos aboard its very own dancing Queens. The luxury cruise brand is world-renowned for its glamorous onboard entertainment, but lesser known is the fact that Cunard's Queens are home to some of the liveliest nightclubs at sea.And now, as music lovers across the globe celebrate International DJ Day on 9 March, Cunard has announced that it is introducing silent discos to its iconic late-night venues on selected evenings. The stunning G32 onboard Queen Mary 2 is the biggest of the fleet's nightclubs, which is where you'll find partygoers seeing out the evening in style to the sounds of a live DJ and resident party band.Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria, however, are home to the strikingly located Yacht Club, where, if you're looking for a night to remember, travellers dance the night away into the small hours. The introduction of silent discos to these venues is a modern twist on the more established late-night traditions of luxury cruise travel – and is another example of the many immersive onboard experiences offered by Cunard. The concept involves partygoers wearing wireless headphones and dancing to music that is only audible through the headphones. This creates a uniquely entrancing and customisable experience as guests control their own volume and switch between channels to hear different genres of music. This new offering also enables Cunard to take the nightclub proposition out of the main venues and into more unexpected places – transforming areas with parties in the Grand Lobby, on deck or other pop-up locations around the ship. And more...Join the show:If you have a cruise tip, burning question or want to record a cruise review get in touch with us via the website https://thebigcruisepodcast.com/join-the-show/ Guests: Chris Frame: https://bit.ly/3a4aBCg   Chris's Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChrisFrameOfficialListen & Subscribe: Amazon Podcasts: https://amzn.to/3w40cDcApple Podcasts: https://apple.co/2XvD7tF Audible: https://adbl.co/3nDvuNgCastbox: https://bit.ly/2xkGBEI Google Podcasts: https://bit.ly/2RuY04u I heart Radio:  https://ihr.fm/3mVIEUASpotify: https://spoti.fi/3caCwl8 Stitcher: https://bit.ly/2JWE8Tz Pocket casts: https://bit.ly/2JY4J2M Tune in: https://bit.ly/2V0Jrrs Podcast Addict: https://bit.ly/2BF6LnE Hosted on Acast. Kencan Dengan Tuhan - Selasa, 6 Desember 2022 Bacaan: "Dapatkah engkau menyaringkan suaramu sampai ke awan-awan, sehingga banjir meliputi engkau? Dapatkah engkau melepaskan kilat, sehingga sabung-menyabung, sambil berkata kepadamu: Ya?" Amin. (Dod).

In the summer of 1883, the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra were rocked by a volcanic eruption more destructive than any other in recorded human history. When the tiny, uninhabited island of Krakatoa erupted, it sent a plume of ash and gas 17 miles into the sky, created a 2,500-foot-tall pyroclastic cloud, and wiped out settlements thirty miles away with a series of deadly tsunamis. The eruption was so loud it was heard 5,000 miles away, and it sent so much debris into the atmosphere that it created a four-year-long global volcanic winter. On this episode, we're talking plate tectonics, the Dutch East Indies, disaster reporting, the B-52s, and the unsettling behavior of Krakatoa's current incarnation, Anak Krakatau. The eruption of Krakatoa, in August 1883 was one of the deadliest volcanic eruptions of modern history. It is estimated that more than 36,000 people died. Many died as a result of thermal injury from the blasts and many more were victims of the tsunamis that followed the collapse of the volcano into the sea. The eruption also affected the climate and caused temperatures to drop all over the world. The island of Krakatau is in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra. In May 1883, the captain of the Elizabeth, a German warship, reported seeing clouds of ash above Krakatau. He estimated them to be more than 6 miles high. For the next two months, commercial vessels and chartered sightseeing boats frequented the strait and reported thundering noises and incandescent clouds. At 12:53 p.m. on August 26, 1883, the initial blast of the eruption sent a cloud of gas and debris an estimated 15 miles into the air. The following morning, four tremendous explosions, heard as far away as Perth, Australia, some 2,800 miles away cracked the dawn. The initial explosion ruptured the magma chamber and the water flash-boiled, creating a cushion of superheated steam that carried the pyroclastic flows up to 25 miles at speeds in excess of 62 mph. The eruption is estimated to have had the explosive force of 200 megatons of TNT, or nearly ten thousand times more explosive than the nuclear bomb that destroyed Hiroshima. Volcanic rock fragments and hot volcanic gases overcame many of the victims in western Java and Sumatra, and thousands more were killed by a devastating tsunami. The wall of water, nearly 120 feet tall, was created by the volcano's collapse into the sea. It completely overwhelmed small nearby islands. Inhabitants of the coastal towns on Java and Sumatra fled toward higher ground. One hundred sixty-five coastal villages were destroyed. The steamship Berouw was carried nearly a mile inland on Sumatra; all 28 crewmembers were killed. Another ship, the Loudon, had been anchored nearby. The ship's captain Lindemann succeeded in turning its bow to face the wave, and the ship was able to ride over the crest. The explosions hurled an estimated 11 cubic miles of debris into the atmosphere, darkening skies up to 275 miles from the volcano. In the immediate vicinity, the sun light did not return for three days. Ash fell as far away as 3,775 miles (landing on ships to the northwest. Barometers around the globe documented that the shock waves in the atmosphere circled the planet at least seven times. Within 13 days, a layer of sulfur dioxide and other gases began to filter the amount of sunlight able to reach Earth. The atmospheric effects made for spectacular sunsets all over Europe and the United States. The impact of the weather was profound as average global temperatures were as much as 1.2 degrees cooler for the next five years. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Putekļi mums ir visapkārt. To ceļi ir tuvi un tāli

Zināmais nezināmajā

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 3, 2020 44:24

Lielākais putekļu piesārņojums veidojas no individuālām mājsaimniecībām un no to apkures.

Abu vulkanis merendam rumah setelah erupsi Gunung Merapi, Juni 2006. Permeability and porosity as constraints on the explosive eruption of magma: Laboratory experiments and field investigations

Fakultät für Geowissenschaften - Digitale Hochschulschriften der LMU

Porosity and permeability are both parameters which may have a considerable impact on the characteristics of a volcanic eruption. Various processes, from magmatic flow during ascent to the point of magmatic fragmentation during an explosive eruption are influenced, and sometimes even controlled by the amount of volatiles trapped in a magma’s pore space and by the efficiency of their escape. Detailed investigations of the porosity of pyroclastic rocks and its relation to the gas permeability are therefore crucial for the understanding of such processes and may provide an important database for physical models. The combination of experimental work and field investigation represents in this context an effective approach to obtain a statistically relevant amount of data on the one hand, and, on the other hand, experimentally quantify the correlation between different parameters. For this study, density data of pyroclastic deposits from eight circum-pacific volcanoes were recalculated to porosity values using the determined matrix density of the corresponding rocks. The pyroclasts density was determined directly in the field with a method based on the Archimedean principle; the matrix density was determined in the laboratory using a He-Pycnometer. The comparison of the resulting porosity distribution histograms allows (a) the investigation of local features related to depositional mechanisms, if the distribution of single measurement points is evaluated, and (b) statements about large scale coherencies regarding the eruptive style and the explosivity of a volcano, if the compiled datasets of the volcanoes are compared. The shape and the variance of the distribution curves, as well as the positions of the porosity peak or mean porosity values are parameters that can be used for further interpretation. The differences in the porosity distribution patterns allowed the classification of the investigated volcanoes into three groups, corresponding to their eruptive characteristics: (1) dome-building volcanoes with predominantly block-and-ash-flow activity and occasional Vulcanian explosions (Merapi, Unzen, Colima), (2) cryptodome-forming volcanoes with a subsequent lateral-blast eruption (Bezymianny, Mount St. Helens), and (3) Subplinian to Plinian explosive eruptions (Krakatau, Kelut, Augustine). Furthermore, possible coherencies between the mean porosity values of selected eruptions and their explosivity, expressed in two different explosivity indexes, were evaluated. The ‘Volcanic Explosivity Index’ (VEI), introduced by Newhall & Self (1982), is mainly based on the volume of the erupted tephra, and shows a rough positive correlation to the mean porosity of eruptive products. A qualitative enhancement of this correlation, especially considering low-porosity, low-explosive deposits, was achieved by using the measured porosity values to determine the index of the ‘Eruption Magnitude’, introduced by Pyle 1995. Volcanoes with not only pure explosive (Vulcanian and/or Plinian) activity were found to deviate systematically from this correlation. Besides their relevance for the understanding and modeling of eruption physics, the interpretation of porosity data may help to discriminate eruption characteristics and explosivities also at historic and pre-historic eruption deposits. The main focus of this work was the experimental investigation of the gas permeability of volcanic rocks. In order to simulate degassing processes under strongly transient conditions, the experiments were performed on a shock-tube like apparatus. The permeability of a natural porous material depends on a complex mixture of physical and textural parameters. Evidently, the volume fraction of the materials pore space, i.e. its porosity, is one of the prominent factors controlling permeable gas flow. But, as a high scatter of measured permeability values for a given porosity indicates, it seems that parameters like vesicle sizes, vesicle size distribution, vesicle shape, the degree of interconnectivity et cetera may likewise influence filtration properties. Therefore it is almost impossible to predict the permeability development of natural material with theoretical cause-and-effect relations, and experimental work in this field is essential. By performing more than 360 gas filtration experiments on 112 different samples from 13 volcanoes, a comprehensive permeability and porosity database was created with this study, giving rise to profound empirical as well as quantitative investigations. The dependency of porosity and permeability of volcanic rocks was found to follow two different, but overlapping trends, according to the geometries of the gas-flow providing pore-space: at low porosities (i.e. long-term degassed dome rocks), gas escape occurs predominantly through microcracks or elongated micropores and therefore could be described by simplified forms of capillary (Kozeny-Carman relations) and fracture flow models. At higher porosities, the influence of vesicles becomes progressively stronger as they form an increasingly connected network. Therefore, a model based on the percolation theory of fully penetrable spheres was used, as a first approximation, to describe the permeability-porosity trend. To investigate possible influences of high temperatures on the degassing properties of volcanic rocks, a measuring method that allowed permeability experiments at temperatures up to 750 °C was developed and tested. A sealing coat of compacted NaCl, which was, if required, further compressed during the high-T experiment, was found to be the most promising approach to avoid gas leaking due to different thermal expansivities of the materials involved. The results of three dome rock samples showed distinct lower gas filtration rates at high temperatures. As this may, for the largest part, be attributed to changed gas properties at high temperature, the obtained permeability values must be corrected for the enhanced gas viscosity. The corrected permeability values of the samples were higher than those obtained at room temperature, possibly caused by thermal expansion of the pores. Since, however, compressional forces of the salt coating upon the sample cylinder may lower the permeability particularly of highly fractured rocks to a not quantifyable degree, these results must be interpreted accordingly and seen under certain restrictions. Comparison of the permeability values before and after the heating process revealed that no permanent structural changes in the pore network occurred. This was confirmed by a 5h-experiment on a trachytic sample, with permeability tests in an interval of 60 minutes. The influence of permeability on magmatic fragmentation is of special interest for the modelling of eruptive processes. In particular the ‘fragmentation threshold’, i.e. the physical conditions, at which magma is no longer able to reduce gas overpressure by filtration and fragments, represents an important boundary condition for explosive eruption models. Former studies defined this threshold to depend on either the porosity of the magma, or a combination of porosity and overpressure. The experimental results of this work, however, reveal that, in addition to porosity and applied overpressure, the permeability strongly influences the fragmentation threshold. By quantifying this influence in a simple, analytical equation, these results will provide a valuable tool for physical models of eruption mechanics.
