Founder Robert (Bob) Craig began his career in wine at The Hess Collection on Mount Veeder in the 1980s. Prior to starting the winery, Bob's passion for Mountain Cabernet had him spearheading the official recognition of both the Mount Veeder and Spring Mountain District AVAs. In 1995 22 acres were purchased at the summit of Howell Mountain – the vineyard property that would become their estate winery. Elton arrived in 2004 and spearheaded the overhaul and reinvestment of the farming, winemaking and sales structure at. Now the managing partner at the winery, he spends much of his time traveling around the country spreading the Craig word. Elton's has brought his passion for old world wines to the new world of Craig with a production philosophy based on site expression. We had a great visit with Elton and his infectious passion for wine will come through the speakers and make you want to try these mountain grown wines [EP262] robertcraigwine.com instagram.com/robertcraigwinery instagram.com/eltonslone2

Located in the upper Douro DOC, a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage site since 2001, Kopke benefits from the imposing geography of the Douro Valley: the plunging valleys allow vines to be planted from altitudes of 1,900 feet on the upper ridges, down to 230 feet alongside the river, with immensely diverse terroirs. Kopke wines are sourced and produced in Quinta São Luiz, one of the most important estates in Douro region. This 300-acre estate has 220 acres planted to traditional Portuguese grape varieties, such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinta Cão. The late, great George Mardikian was restauranteur extraordinaire, philanthropist and an inspiration to his family and employees. Hear from his nephew/son Haig Mardikian wine, Ohman Khayans, immigration and philanthropy. We discuss the famed Mardikian Pinot Noir, the immigration of 10's of thousands of Armenians to America, and life. It is probably the most emotional podcast I have hosted and guessing that monicker will stand for awhile. PK

Bertus and Alli are the owners and winemakers of Belong Wine Co. based in Napa Valley making Rhône and fringe varietals from the El Dorado Foothills. With 1 ton of fruit and a whole lot of gumption, started Belong Wine Co. in 2017 to celebrate everything they hold dear: love, adventure, and a sense of exploration. They grew up on opposite ends of the globe - Bertus in Cape Town, South Africa and Alli in the Bay Area sugar hamlet of Crockett. Bertus knew he wanted to be a winemaker at the age of 15. He went on to study Viticulture and Enology at the University of Stellenbosch. He has worked in the cellar at Deetlefs Estate, Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons, Glen Carlou, Hess Collection, Chappellet, and Regusci and has been in his current position as the winemaker for James Cole, Tank Garage, and T-Vine wineries since 2012. His happy place has always been out in the vineyards, where he can be found in short shorts. Alli still doesn’t know what she wants to be when she grows up. She has always found great joy in the creative process and is a Jill of many trades. She went to the Harvard of the west, Chico State, where she studied Sociology and learned the beauty of work/life balance. Alli moved to Napa in 2010 with her sister, Holly, who was already working in the wine industry. After managing a wine bar downtown for four years she transitioned to her current role at Whetstone Wine Cellars where she gets to wear many hats, including graphic design, hospitality, events, and marketing.
First and foremost, James MacPhail is a winemaker. For over 18 years he has handcrafted high quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay - in small quantity. His AVAs have ranged from Santa Barbara to Eola-Amity Hills in Oregon - with Anderson Valley, Russian River Valley, and the cooler regions of Sonoma Coast peppered in between. With an industry flooded with novices, James is a reputable veteran. His long history of success making premium wines for his own label (and others) has primed James MacPhail to offer this expertise as a high-end wine consultant, and so ‘Wines by James MacPhail, LLC’ was born. Undoubtedly dedicated and committed to his craft, James has produced over 100 different Pinots and Chardonnays (also a Merlot and a Cab!) with 90+ point scores -- making him one of the only few members of the 90+/90+ Club in Sonoma County. James realized that winemaking satisfied his interest in the things that motivated him and kept his interests keen: the local land, art, business - and the desire to create. So it seemed natural for him to launched his own brand in 2001: ‘MacPhail Family Wines’. His gift for creating exceptional wines was recognized and in 2007 James was asked by The Hess Collection to start Sequana, an exclusive Pinot Noir program focused on Pinot noir from the Russian River Valley and the Santa Lucia Highlands appellations. By 2011 he was making 4000 cases for MacPhail Family Wines, and 12,000 cases for Sequana. The hats James was wearing were many, and in the fall of 2011, it was mutually agreed that The Hess Collection would acquire his brand so that James could focus on what got him into the industry in the first place - his love of winemaking. In 2016, after years of intense ‘hands-on’ for both brands, James decided to leave The Hess Collection and take his knowledge and expertise in crafting Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and become a resource for others. “Wines by James MacPhail” became a reality. Partnering only with wine-growers and vineyard managers that understand the significance of terroir-based, vineyard designate wine, and share his same commitment to sustainable farming, James’ dream has always been to make something from the earth that he can share with others. An expert in his craft, James plans to make wine as long as he retains his six senses - the sixth being his acute understanding of the grape. Throughout it all, he stays true to his belief in traditional, old world techniques and minimal intervention. James MacPhail takes very seriously the honor of being a part of people’s tables. Here, he says, is where relationships are formed, ideas are exchanged, and passions are shared.

After 45 years in the winemaking business Merry Edwards has decided to slow down. Merry and her husband Ken Coopersmith have sold all their wine holding to the Louis Roederer Champagne house. Roederer, a family owned business already owns three wineries in Mendocino County and plans to keep Merry around through the transition. Bushfires in Australia have been difficult this harvest season, especially at Topper’s Mountain Vineyard where a fire wiped out the entire crop just hours before the scheduled harvest. Lamberto Frescobaldi, owner of Frescobaldi Tuscan wine empire is doing his part to cut down on recidivism. He has established a wine growing culture on the prison island of Gorgona, not far from the Ligurian Riviera. The wines are said to be compelling and expensive. Bill and I discuss these topics and many more in this weeks addition of VinoWeek. Thanks to everyone for listening. Cheers! The wine of the week is the 2016 Artezin Old Vine Zinfandel. This wine is made by Randle Johnson of Hess Collection fame. Hess collection is a huge operation and has wineries in California, Argentina and South Africa. The wine has a deep purple color and features a red fruit nose of raspberries, cherries and white pepper. You get all the classic Zinfandel notes on the palate without the over the top jaminess you often get with less refined efforts. Medium bodied and well balanced, a nice touch of baking spice accompanies a medium length finish. 14.5 abv $12 - $16 Two wines we enjoyed this week
